Obama camp pretty darned fake-angry at Romney’s son for mentioning birth certificate

posted at 9:05 pm on December 30, 2011 by Allahpundit

If you’re fake-angry too, won’t you please donate today?

At an event in New Hampshire today, Romney’s adult son Matt Romney responded to a question regarding the potential release of his father’s tax returns with a joke alluding to doubts about Mr. Obama’s place of birth: “I heard someone suggest the other day that as soon as Obama releases his grades and birth certificate and sort of a long list of things, then maybe he’d do it,” he said…

In an email to supporters today about the joke, Obama for America campaign manager Jim Messina wrote, “This is how the Romney campaign thinks it’s going to win the Republican primary: by pandering to the dead-ender fringe of extremists who still question where the president was born.”

While asking for a donation, Messina said, “we can drive up the cost of this kind of politics… when they do this, you’ve got to do something about it.”

The email was sent under the subject line, “Donald Trump or Mitt Romney?” in reference to Trump’s persistent questions about Mr. Obama’s origins, which ultimately prompted the president to release his long-form birth certificate from Hawaii.

Romney’s son, reverting to strict-message-discipline mode, has already apologized on Twitter. Six months of this awaits next year, guys. Six months of Team O arguing that Romney’s simultaneously (a) an unpredictable opportunist with no principled core and (b) a wild-eyed ideologue ready to push the same radical right-wing agenda on America that he pushed on Massachusetts when he … signed a health-care mandate into law. If you thought the daily ins-and-outs of the Obama/McCain race were dreary, wait until we start covering Obama/Romney. Second look at turning HA into a gossip site?

I’m not familiar with this pollster but they’ve got Romney opening up a seven-point lead in Iowa over Santorum and a 10-point lead over Paul. Nate Silver’s statistical model now gives him a 63 percent chance of winning the state; Paul comes second at 20 percent. Shhhhhhh. It’ll all be over soon.

Since Romney is going to have to release his tax records

Does the law require you too? I thought it didnt I believe romney said he would not release them. I mean he should, as it helps with the Bain romney smearing and all.

Those who are as mice and sheep have by their nature already done so, but will everyone else please raise your right hand and repeat after me. All together now.

I pledge allegiance, and my life and whatever is left of my liberty and my dignity, to all Birth Certificates or Certifications, or PDFs of same, layered or unlayered, that Dear Leader Barack Hussein Obama has now, ever has had or ever will have, and to fully trust that at least one of them is reasonably valid in at least one of the 57 states, or at least legible, and that Barack Hussein Obama is a natural born citizen of the planet Earth, one nation under Obama, invisible, with hope and change for all, except, of course, for Terry Lakin and Donald Trump and Jack Cashill and that Romney Kid and anyone who knows how to spell any of their names. Amen.

Doesn’t everyone feel much better? Yes, so now we can put this totally inconsequential matter completely to rest once and for all. Always trust Dear Leader Barack Hussein Obama in everything he says and does even if the connection between what he says and does is not apparent to your lowly mind. He wouldn’t be doing what he is doing to whom he is doing it if he didn’t know where he was at when he was doing it or he wouldn’t be where he was at if he didn’t know what he was doing and to whom he was doing it to.

Since Romney is going to have to release his tax records, if he’s smart, he’ll do this:

On a Monday morning, release the tax records, AND all of his college transcripts, copies of his senior thesis, canceled checks showing how his college was paid, and his passport records for the past 25 years, and then demand that Obama release all of the same records. The story for the rest of that week will be that Romney has challenged Obama to be as “transparent” as he has been. And every time a reporter tries to have a conversation about his tax records, move it back to “Where are Obama’s records? I’ve shown mine, where are his? Why are you here talking to me when you have all of my records? Why aren’t you talking to him? I’m a candidate — he’s the president, for God’s sake. Where are your questions for him?”

ManWithNoName on December 30, 2011 at 9:59 PM

Yes, he does. That would be his graduation papers from Harvard. If you graduate from law school period, you have a law degree. The next step is to become a practicing attorney. This is dependent on the individual state. I know that in WI, if you graduate from the two law schools you don’t need to take the bar exam, but if you are a WI resident and graduate from an outside law school but wish to relocate, then you do need to take the bar exam. This is my basic understanding at least. I’m hoping to go to law school next year myself so I’ll be learning the full ins and outs over time.

If Obama only wished to practice cases that had an impact in IL, then he needed to only pass the IL bar. Your link looks like it shows that. On Wiki, it mentions that Obama did practice law so he would have to take the bar exam for the state, otherwise he couldn’t practice. You take the bar exams for those jurisdictions that you wish to prosecute/represent. It’s common to do this.

I believe that he’s inactive with his law degree though. This may mean that he has to re-take a bar exam or take some CLE courses. I’m not sure how that entirely works. It may be different state-by-state.

It’s a strange and sad pass we’ve reached, when a Republican candidate’s son is forced to apologize for mentioning the fact that most of 0bama’s records are missing or under lock and key.

This is the box we put ourselves in by ridiculing people who pointed out the obvious – that 0bama is hiding his background.

Yet a GOP candidate’s son must apologize for pointing out that the president is hiding things.

We did this to ourselves.

Pathetic.

csdeven on December 30, 2011 at 10:26 PM

Iowa voters get to help choose the eventual nominee – something that 40+ other states don’t really have a chance to do, so… that seems fairly relevant (and stupid).

cane_loader on December 30, 2011 at 10:34 PM

This in a nutshell is why Romney would lose the big one to O. This is a killer issue, if you stick specifically to Obama’s college transcripts. Not “his grades and birth certificate and stuff” you damn amateur. Transcripts. Which classes did he attend, what were his test scores? It would really be nice to nail down the reality that he is an affirmative action hire. Instead the dimwit “electability” squad has successfully conflated a perfectly legitimate background question with the birther honeypot that Axelrod has been sliming researchers with for years.

Thank you. I figured when you graduate from a law school you had the degree but you needed to pass the bar with the specific State you wished to practice in. I find it interesting he was in Illinois though, don’t you? Did he really pass the bar for IL to practice law or was it like everything else in his life, it just magically happened?

ManWithNoName on December 30, 2011 at 10:23 PM

Haha, outside of taking the MCAT (so I hear) and the actual dissection of people, taking the LSAT (entrance exam for law school) and the bar (once again, rumored) are said to be the toughest exams you will ever face.

The LSAT really is like nothing you can ever imagine. And you can’t really explain it to people that haven’t taken it. I never want to see that thing again. Ever.

I actually don’t fault Obama on the bar exam or his attending Harvard. However, where I do fault everyone on the issue is when they say that it wasn’t an AA action. The whole process of applying to law schools is both an AA and feminist action. Being a white female helps me out. It’s a sad affair (because you think that with a legal degree, you want the highest-skilled based on merit and not skin/LGBT qualities) and I understand why, but anyone who says that he didn’t get in based on AA is just wrong. That said, he still had to perform ridiculously high on the LSAT as an URM (under-represented minority).

I want to see his records from a pure legal schooling angle. I would like to see the legal records of multiple presidents as I personally would find it fascinating.

It was such a grand scale opportunity as well. A few days before the Iowa Caucus. What an incredible opportunity to provide a little “red meat” to the base and to “man up” to Obama and it was squandered.

I don’t get it. I’d swear democrats were secretly sneaking into GOP events and lacing the kool-aid/refreshments with large doses of estrogen (with no offense to our female Conservative audience).

The story for the rest of that week will be that Romney has challenged Obama to be as “transparent” as he has been.

Rational Thought on December 30, 2011 at 9:48 PM

The LSM will spend the next month pouring over every document and ignore that Obama hasn’t released his. The narrative will then be that Romney was stupid to open his record up to that much scrutiny and he is clearly too stupid to be POTUS.

I recently learned that the Law Review at Harvard Law School practices affirmative action, even among the student who have already been admitted to the law school. It is possible for a below-par student to get into the school, and then further to be admitted to the Law Review.

LOL. Good one.

The LSATs are a joke and the bar is nothing more involved than memorization. Of course, the bar is only to ensure that people making representation in court aren’t so stupid and ignorant of the local rules as to totally screw everything up because they just don’t know how to accomplish the basic judicial and legalistic tasks.

Law school is generally a joke.

Like I said, I still think it’s ridiculously hard for even AA prospective students to get in. At all schools, there is preference for AAs and LGBT members.

I’d also like to see some of his law review work if he produced anything. I’ll know more once the process begins. I don’t know if Obama was on any sort of Moot Court or anything else. Moot court, law review and your first year are pretty much the biggies. Also, the label of “Order of the Coif” is a designation that you can earn upon graduation.

Law is softer than economics, from a scientific viewpoint. What passes for logical argument among lawyers stuns mathematicians. The scary part is that the lawyers have the coercive force of government arguing on their side.

What scientific viewpoint is there in economics? I’m not attacking economics because I was never good at it, but economics is not equal to science. Science is based on hypothesis. And then you test the hypothesis. Economics is based on statistics and real data.

Nothing scary about law. :) I believe in law and order.

Some people are naturally gifted at stuff like the LSAT. That’s why they have course instructors that test consistently at the 97-99% rank. It’s not all a fluke.

That said, of course, I don’t think he’s a genius. Getting a high LSAT score does not mean intelligent. However, if I treat the situation rationally, I’m more likely to produce a response from a liberal about why he won’t release the results. It’s not something Obama should be ashamed of and as the first Black President of the US, you would think he’d want to add some additions to his future Presidential Library.
