NYT: Obama’s kind of a White House recluse

posted at 9:50 am on December 30, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

Who knew that Hope and Change could be so bleak and monotonous? At least the New York Times is here to remind us that Barack Obama endures all this isolation in Hawaii and Martha’s Vineyard for our benefit, you miserable ingrates (via Jim Geraghty):

Mr. Obama, in general, does not go out of his way to play the glad-handing, ego-stroking presidential role. While he does sometimes offer a ride on Air Force One to a senator or member of Congress, more often than not, he keeps Congress and official Washington at arm’s length, spending his down time with a small — and shrinking — inner circle of aides and old friends.

He typically golfs with a trio of mid- to low-level staff members little known outside the West Wing. He does not spend much time at Camp David, the retreat other presidents have used to woo Washington. His social life runs toward evenings playing Taboo with old friends and their families, Wii video games with his wife and daughters or basketball with Robert Wolf, a banker and the rare new best friend Mr. Obama has acquired since entering politics. He vacations with friends from Chicago on Martha’s Vineyard in August and in Hawaii at Christmas.

This week, for example, Mr. Obama is ensconced in the protective bubble of the Secret Service. With him are his closest outside-the-Beltway-friends, including Eric Whitaker, a Chicago doctor, and two of Mr. Obama’s Hawaii friends from Punahou School: Mike Ramos, a businessman, and Robert Titcomb, a commercial fisherman whom Mr. Obama has stuck by despite his arrest in April on suspicion of soliciting a prostitute. Mr. Obama bolted from Washington last Friday barely an hour after he had signed legislation extending the payroll tax cut after a grinding fight with House Republicans whose result is widely viewed as a big win for him. His relationship with Washington insiders is described by members of both parties as “remote,” “distant” and “perfunctory.”

It’s not the first time the media has noticed that Obama is a bit of a loner. A month ago, Newsweek/Daily Beast editor Tina Brown told Joe Scarborough how little Obama likes his job. The month before that, a spate of news articles hit the stands about Obama’s aloofness, his bad relationships with political allies, and general lack of people skills. Chris Matthews even openly wondered just before Thanksgiving why Obama wants another term, and why Obama seems incapable of making an argument for what he would do with one.

Never fear, though. The NYT found a great resource of advice for Obama in his time of solitude and isolation:

“It’s about building relationships,” said Gerald Rafshoon, a television producer who was President Jimmy Carter’s communications director. “Some people are saying he’s a recluse. You don’t want that reputation. He needs to show that he likes people.” Mr. Rafshoon’s old boss, an outsider to Washington when he became president, recently wrote in his book “White House Diary” that he did not socialize enough when he was the chief executive.

Jimmy Carter had a lot of problems as President (and perhaps more as a former President), and lack of socializing may well have been one of them. Carter didn’t get the boot because he was a loner, though; he got the boot because he had nothing to offer to fix a chronically stagnating economy and had gotten bullied on the foreign stage. Obama’s done somewhat better on foreign policy than Carter, although not by a whole lot, but has an even worse economy than Carter’s with no clear policy on how to fix it. All Obama has done is take a page from Carter’s predecessor Gerald Ford in offering a bunch of meaningless slogans like Recovery Summer, this administration’s Whip Inflation Now, combined with self-defeating short-term gimmickry.

Maybe Obama doesn’t like his job because he’s not very good at it. And if that’s the case, we can help him out … literally.

Just as hereditary monarchs too often showed why the old form of Affirmative Action (family connections) was a bad way to run a nation, Barry now shows why the new form of Affirmative Action(based on race) is also a bad way to choose a leader.

Soetoro is better-suited, for his own purposes, to be a constitutional monarch/figurehead, rather than a chief executive with real power.

Barry loves the bands, the crowds, the state dinners, the ribbon-cutting, the speeches, the endless vacations, and all the rest of the pomp…all paid for by the subjects, of course.

What Soetoro is no good at is actual hard work and making decisions. Nothing in his temperament, much less his merit-free promotions up to 2008, prepared him to be a leader.

The first quote describes someone who shuns everything about his job and tries to be on a permanent vacation.

Why would he want to be around the people that he must work with to make things happen when he can hang out with people who won’t hold him accountable while they play Taboo or golf?

That’s all this guy has done while in office, entertain himself, at the nation’s expense.

Name any other President who got his job by being incompetent at all of his previous jobs.

He is more like brown recluse…. sucking the life out of this nation, injecting poison through class warfare and pure politics. Patriotism is a virtue and this man has very little.

And for all you ignorant people out look up “brown recluse.” This whole process of voting pro-abort black babies obama has nothing to do with his race. It’s to save it.

Gatekeeper on December 30, 2011 at 12:14 PM

President Barack Obama hates his job…and we have a gigantic debt problem…hmm…Simple solution! He can start up a Presidential Auction and who ever puts up the highest bid can take over as U.S. President. Meanwhile the final bid will go towards debt reduction.

Of course on second thought…President George Soros/Warren Buffet doesn’t sound too apetising.

First they wouldn’t immitate Mussolini.

Second they wouldn’t be giving a speech.

Third they wouldn’t be a politician.

Now if you compared him to the ever-popular Downfall clip in the bunker… why, yes…that would be about right. Soon he will be moving fantasy groups around and giving orders to people who don’t exist. That I can see.

jfox21 on December 30, 2011 at 12:10 PM

Obama sucks at the governing thing. He should have been part and parcel of the negotiations with the supercommittee. He should have pushed Congress to pass budgets the past two years when he was the one that submitted the request. He should have worked to be the post-partisan President he pretends to be.

But when it comes to the perqs of office, Obama is an expert. He thinks nothing of flitting around the world at taxpayer expense and his grifter wife is even worse. How many millions have been spent on Obama vacations? That Michelle Obama and the kids couldn’t wait four hours to go to Martha’s Vineyard so that travel wouldn’t take another plane, set of vehicles for escort to the estate, etc. shows just how bad the stewardship of Obama has been.

Of course there are all the other perqs as well. The parties, the concerts, the hanging out with celebs. The new tradition of having the President spend more time picking the NCAA Final Four than working on job creation. The date nights in New York and Paris. The golf outings, even when there are world crises like the Iranian uprising that Obama had no time for as he golfed at Fort Belvior and then took the girls out for ice cream. Obama and his grifter spouse like the pampering even though Obama has yet to even attain a gentleman’s C for his pathetic effort at doing his job.

Sincerely hope you’re wrong. How did Marx put it? “History repeats itself, first as tragedy, second as farce.” (I prefer, “History repeats itself because nobody listens.”) I’m not sure that Obama can pull a Clinton. Clinton left office as the most “successful” Democrat president since Kennedy. Obama will leave– IF he leaves (big IF)– more like Carter. Took a decade or two to rehabilitate that old fool.

In the decade following his departure, the books about the “real” Obama will be written. Clinton left office a fully-known quantity, every personal peccadillo on display, yet bathed in the golden light of having survived them, as well as his impeachment.

When Obama leaves, the revelations only just begin. Every public appearance by him will be an occasion to discuss or even confront him with the latest. And he avoids confrontational situations in which he is not in absolute control. Let’s hope that by January 2013 he’s no longer in absolute control.

ksmoola1 on December 30, 2011 at 12:43 PM

I don’t think you are going to get the chance to miss him. There is a tradition that the outgoing President give the new President time to establish the new administration without interference or comments. Teddy Roosevelt left the country for a year after leaving office. Bill Clinton was somewhat meddlesome after six months. I don’t think Obama will be out of office for a full month before he starts flitting around trying to stay in the limelight. Narcissists need constant attention.

True. I just had the image in my mind of Clinton on the tarmac as he took leave after GWB’s inauguration: at that point, he was the former president, yet there he was, yammering self-importantly at a podium as if it mattered one iota what he was saying. Meanwhile, the split-screen live coverage was showing GWB and Laura walking down Pennsylvania Ave. happily waving at everyone. I’m sure that wasn’t an accident — the MSM was starting its great job of diminishing GWB, because he had now displaced their first hero.

Can’t deny that. But the pretzel-twisting will be public, and not the quiet, complicit interment of the record now in progress. Even historians can’t resist airing juicy new revelations, however they try to twist them.

And there’s always a liberal historian who writes “I started out believing X but the data forced me to consider Y.” Weinstein’s Perjury which nailed Hiss and vindicated Chambers. The JFK hagiography has been thoroughly tarnished by historians of every stripe. Shales The Forgotten Man

Obama’s done somewhat better on foreign policy than Carter, although not by a whole lot, but has an even worse economy than Carter’s with no clear policy on how to fix it.

Obama’s problem isn’t “having no clear policy” when it comes to the economy. He has a clear policy. It is the ivory tower socialism with which he was indoctrinated in college. Most college graduates spend some time in the Real World and learn quickly that the politics of college professors is a load of manure. Obama’s “working” life was spent at the government teat and as a professional extortionist, and he never had the crucial formative experience of being required to produce actual results.

Thanks again, 52 percenters.

Stimulus programs are, for good reason, short term only. Although I don’t see what’s short term about saving the auto industry.

White House recluse? Hardly. He is – as he has been since day one – in operational mode. He is goal-oriented, and his goal is as he stated a few days before the 2008 election: “fundamentally change the United States of America”.

He has no time for other people because he doesn’t NEED other people. He has his trusted co-Marxists in place, and they are diligently fulfilling what he has assigned to them – creating reams of regulations which give him the means to skirt the Constitutional requirement of checks and balances.

He assigns, then plays golf while awaiting those assignments’ resultant regulations’.

If his particular goal can’t be achieved by creating a new regulation, he whips out his Executive Order pen – creating a temporary result which he can hope will be overlokked by the president following him. Executive Orders – temporary, unless he can manage to pull off his primary goal of making himself president for life.

He’s well on his way to that goal, as no matter what he does – no matter what he signs, orders, executes, or regulates – the Republicans elected to fulfill their Constitutional responsibility of riding heard on the Executive branch DO NOTHING. They apparently have not even noticed what Obama has been doing. However, since WE have noticed – and loudly so – it can only be surmised that none of those Republicans care what he’s doing; don’t care that our precious Republic is circling the drain.

Mr. Obama, in general, does not go out of his way to play the glad-handing, ego-stroking presidential role.

WTF? DeathStar Bus Rides in the Midwest, constant campaigning in front of union drones and a sycophant press corps (i.e. the recent 60 minutes tongue-bath) and this narcissistic Boob doesn’t like glad-handing and ego-stroking?

and Robert Titcomb, a commercial fisherman whom Mr. Obama has stuck by despite his arrest in April on suspicion of soliciting a prostitute.

As I told my children growing up you will be judged by the company you keep. I judge Obummer on a lot of things so this is just adding to a very long list.

I agree with other posters that the MSM has carried Oblamo’s water to such a degree that every thinking American should see through the disguise by now. That so many haven’t is a testament to how well the leftist doctrine has taken hold in this country. God help us all.

It is necessary for him to be on the golf course, where there are no listening devices between him and his Blackberry contacts. His precious Blackberry, which enables him to conduct his evil business in secret – and with no retrievable record.

If his particular goal can’t be achieved by creating a new regulation, he whips out his Executive Order pen – creating a temporary result which he can hope will be overlooked by the president following him. Executive Orders – temporary, unless he can manage to pull off his primary goal of making himself president-for-life.

Sorry for the twice-posted comment. First time didn’t post initially – I hit the “submit” button, but instead of it posting, the entire article/comments printed out – without my comment – so I started over. Ah, well! Second posting does have corrected typos…

Might Mike Ramos and Robert Titcomb be entertained by Obama in exchange for their keeping quiet about his past?

Colony14 on December 30, 2011 at 3:01 PM

Maybe Obama doesn’t like his job because he’s not very good at it. And if that’s the case, we can help him out … literally.

I’ve always said Obama wanted the title, not the job. He’s a lost soul that doesn’t know who he is. He thought being President would finally define who he is. But guess what? It doesn’t. You need to know who you are BEFORE you get a title.

MrX on December 30, 2011 at 1:55 PM

I totally agree with both comments…and somehow, I think probably he’s aware of that and subconsciously that’s what he wants to, out that is…the whole WH experience wasn’t what he thought it would be and didn’t do the trick for him…besides, why staying when you have nothing to offer…too bad he doesn’t listen to his inner voice too often :-)…now I think he’s doing it entirely for the ego thing, he can’t bear being seen as a quitter/loser…

What kind of nonsense is this? No one needs to “run the economy”. It’s quite capable of running itself when government institutions GTFO.

The very idea that someone needs to “run the economy” is absurd.

Those that Obowma stepped on to climb the ladder have abandoned him during his fall.

His best friend is his mirror. Obowma’s arrogance in thinking he can do anything because “they have me” has failed him and the democrats belief in socialism has failed America, once again.

Stupid is as stupid does.

Obama’s kind of a White House recluse

In my neck of the woods, a recluse is a poisonous little brown spider that hides in wood piles.

Anyone see any resemblance between my local recluse in the wood pile and our nation’s recluse in the white house?

Lawrence on December 30, 2011 at 4:17 PM

A word of advice to Obama’s “small — and shrinking — inner circle of aides and old friends.”

If Barry asks to see you, your spouse, your kids and family dog, think ”Berlin – 1945″ and refuse the invite!!!

Mr. Grump on December 30, 2011 at 4:31 PM

So Obama took his doc with him. The doc must keep Obama supplied with meds so he doesn’t have a meltdown for all the world to see since we all know Obama has a serious personality disorder.

profitsbeard on December 30, 2011 at 6:35 PM

I think his unusual up-bringing led him to look for a path to
follow. Unfortunately, he bought into the whole Socialist
doctrine. His education was more of an indoctrination.

He never had to work to get ahead, someone or some act would
always clear the way for him. The peter principal and affirmative
action worked in his favor.

Now he is the President, and he knows he’s not done well.

His ultra-liberal and communistic dreams lie shattered.

He has nowhere to go but down. Tough for his ego to handle.

Does anyone know any happy Libs or Socialists ?
They need to be mad at the world, to have that mindset.

He’ll be a terrible ex-president and still have to listen
to his lovely wife complaining.

How could he not be depressed and withdrawn now that reality
is setting in ?

He may well crack.

Who knew that Hope and Change could be so bleak and monotonous?

It’s tough times for Obama. Everything he has ever been taught thoughout his life, socialism, marxism, communism has all failed magnificently and he has no clue what to do next. Politically he can’t move from the hard left, he can’t embrace Conservative and Republican ideals and policies that are proven to work, so that leaves him vacationing, playing golf and hiding as much as possible.

MrX on December 30, 2011 at 1:55 PM

That is a long way of saying that character counts. Obama has no moral grounding so he has no character. For that reason alone he is unfit to be President. It hasn’t mattered to him up until now because the minute he got one title he was working on the next and voting present so as to not leave a trail of votes that he would have to explain as idiots gushed over his candidacy.

Well, to quote his racist pastor, the chickens have come home to roost. There is no follow-on job to start running for from POTUS. Finally this empty suit moron has to stand for election on his record and he doesn’t like it. He doesn’t like the criticism and is very thin-skinned about anything less than the gushing adulation he got when he was running for office. It is time for this worthless human being to leave public life and, hopefully, begin finding out just who the hell he is.

Hey, Einstein: did you not notice the bespectacled fellow who looks like an undertaker and runs the Senate, which is under Democratic control?

Republicans can’t do diddly squat with the House except shut down the government – but that kills the good with the bad, and would hurt us more than Obama after Grandma’s check didn’t arrive and the Army runs out of ammo.

Can’t wait for the books and articles to be written after he is out of office that say what rally happened during his watch. The only reason these articles and books are not out yet is quite obvious if you look back at the Clintons history.
