A Christmas redistricting present for the NJ GOP
posted at 4:15 pm on December 24, 2011 by Jazz Shaw
I’m not sure what’s going on in New Jersey these days, but it’s certainly interesting. The Garden State is going through their post-census redistricting like everyone else, but it’s taken a rather unexpected turn. Jersey is a state which is generally just as blue as my home turf of New York, just across the border, but redistricting up here is almost always a nightmare for the GOP. (For example, we have one of the most Rorschach test looking, gerrymandered districts around, designed to keep Democrat Maurice Hinchey in office until he either retires or expires.) But in the land of Chris Christie, even with the serious generic ballot advantage held by Democrats, the GOP has scored themselves a bit of holiday cheer.
Democrats got a pre-Christmas lump of coal Friday, when a bipartisan New Jersey panel selected a GOP-drawn redistricting plan that imperils one House Democrat and shores up several Republicans.
Under the plan, Democratic Rep. Steve Rothman, a veteran member of the House Appropriations Committee, has been thrust into a Republican-oriented district with GOP Rep. Scott Garrett, severely diminishing his reelection prospects…
New Jersey is shedding one of its 13 seats in the current round of reapportionment — meaning that, with all of the state’s House members running for reelection, two incumbents would have to face off.
The map also solidifies the districts of two vulnerable junior Republicans, Reps. Jon Runyan and Leonard Lance. Runyan, a former professional football player who ousted the late Democratic Rep. John Adler in 2010, will shed the Democratic-oriented Cherry Hill from his 3rd District seat. Lance, a sophomore member, will see his northern New Jersey district lose a batch of Democratic-aligned areas.
The short version of the story is that Rothman is stuck with a choice of either going up against Garrett in one of the state’s few Republican friendly districts or engaging in a war of attrition against Bill Pascrell in the neighboring, Democrat held district. Either way, the prospects for the Democrats look the same, coming out at a net loss of one. Rothman and Garrett are both sitting on roughly $1.5M in their campaign coffers, but the Democrat may find it a bit more difficult to pry open people’s wallets for donations in his new, more conservative turf.
The Politico article also notes that this comes on the heels of neighboring Pennsylvania approving a map which will push two Democrats into a face-off in a district out in the far western reaches of the state. So my exit question today, as I prepare for Christmas Eve here at home, is not for you the readers, but for Saint Nick.
Dear Santa,
You’ve been pretty nice to the GOP in New Jersey and Pennsylvania this year. Any chance you can swing that sleigh a little bit to the north and help us out here in New York?
Love, Jazz.

Merry Christmas to you and all at HA.

Good luck with that. Dems here in CT are crying unfair at the suggestion that Bridgeport be removed from the 4th district, which would make it tilt towards R’s.
clancy_wiggum on December 24, 2011 at 4:27 PM
I guess this partially makes up for the ass-kicking the GOP received in California redistricting.

Ohhh, damn the bad luck! HA!

Same thing is happening in Ohio, it’s pitting Marcy Kaptur against Dennis Kucinich in the new 9th. Not sure if I’m going to be in the new 9th or if I actually get to vote for the GOP (which isn’t much of a prize these days.)

And while you’re at it, jump on out to Kalifornia and work some magic here. ‘Cause that’s what it’s going to take since sanity has long fled “The Golden State”.

Apparently Jazz, you haven’t seen MD-3.

So New Jersey is losing a blue district. Meanwhile Tx is gaining 4 new blue ones. That’s if the DOJ has its way.

Bridgeport is disgusting and an eyesore.

NY is too dysfunctional to have anything happen this good for the GOP. I am resigned to my freshly elected Rep Bob Turner sacrificed on the alter of “bipartisanship”.

Oh, please. That’s nothing compared CA districts 30 through 40 in LA (though it has gotten better since last time, I think):

In reality, if you take out some of the cities, from smaller 3rd world sh*t holes, er, developing cities, like Asbury Park and Neptune, to the big ones like Camden and Newark, NJ would be GOP territory.
William Teach on December 24, 2011 at 5:12 PM
Finally, a chance to get rid to the “Yes, Nancy” Rothman.
tbrickert on December 24, 2011 at 5:17 PM
Not Essex County. It’s chock full of both types of Dem voters: clueless minorities (in Newark) and clueless white progressives (in Montclair). Hudson is also Democrat. Camden is a sh$%hole, Burlington is on the fast track to being a sh$%hole (thanks to the RiverLINE). Atlantic County does have AC, but that’s about all of it’s minority population. Everywhere else it’s Christie country, except Warren and Hunterdon counties, where it’s Palin country.
TheLastBrainLeft on December 24, 2011 at 5:18 PM
And Sussex.
TheLastBrainLeft on December 24, 2011 at 5:19 PM
I’ll believe it when I see it. Democrats never let you win, they’ll have this puppy in court, with one of their judges in tow, faster than you can say “redistricting”.
bflat879 on December 24, 2011 at 5:25 PM
Meanwhile Colorado and California went for the Democrat plans.
Remember when California was Reagan country, or something. Ever since then “true conservatives” have just ceded California to the democrats, they don’t even bother competing seriously there, in fact they regularly insult California and Californians (even though everybody knows theyre just jealous).

Check out Louise Slaughter’s earmuff shaped District that links central Rochester with Niagara Falls and Part of Buffalo via a little strip of Lake Ontario beach that runs around 60 miles. Abraham Lincoln couldn’t win that district and Louise is pretty much incoherently stupid.

Things here in Commiefornia have gone from bad to worse.Unless we get some fresh bold GOP leadership we can forget about any real changes in our lifetime.Santa hear our prayer.

Rothman, no doubt, has pissed off some of his colleagues in Trenton, so bad that they redistricted him in favor of a Republican House member.

Iowa must have been good this year, losing a seat but we will be losing a Dem because of it! Iowa does not have gerrymandered districts, no crooked lines. Truly a gift from Santa!

If you were a Bold Conservative, would you run in Commiefornia or would you just move?………just saying

Exactly, and I expect Eric Holder will get involved.

Has anybody considered that Jersey may well have collective mental illness? After all, within five years, the voters elected Corzine and Christie.
That spells disturbed in any language.

Wow. MD-2 and Md-4 are pretty amazing too. Heck, Md-2 isn’t even contiguous. Can they do that?
Pythagoras on December 25, 2011 at 2:02 AM
I never understood how the courts have allowed extreme gerrymandering intended to insure a member of a certain race gets elected. It’s clearly not called for by the Constitution and the black vote is not “diluted” just because a certain black candidate’s election to office is not guaranteed – as if votes by a blacks are not a full votes unless sufficient numbers of blacks are sure to win. Gerrymandering for racial politics is really increasing the voting power of blacks while actually diluting the voting power of non-blacks in these districts, who don’t seem to matter.
Reasonably fair geometric conditions exists for “compact” district definition, but of course, politicians are too corrupt to agree to such – they’d rather play the gerrymandering games.
Chessplayer on December 25, 2011 at 10:32 AM
California is hopeless. They will gerrymander the districts to keep the Democrats in charge, it will make little difference because the voters, who had good candidates to choose from last election, re-elected Democrats. They are rapidly heading for complete bankruptcy and the Democrats will have to make tough decisions, which won’t make them happy with their constituents. Ironically, the only salvation for California is Republicans in charge and that’s not going to happen.
Who knows how it will all end up, the only thing we understand is it’s not going to be pretty and, in typical California fashion, there will be lawsuits and ballot initiatives. It should be fun to watch and I’m really glad I don’t live there.

Dear Santa,
May we have the good fortune of ridding Arizona of Raul Grijelva? Gabrielle Saucedo-Mercer is pretty terrific!

“So New Jersey is losing a blue district. Meanwhile Tx is gaining 4 new blue ones. That’s if the DOJ has its way.”
And in CA, the Dems will pick up four or five seats from a delegation that hasn’t added numbers for the first time since CA became a state, 160+ years ago.
The “true Conservatives” gave up by moving out, look at the net migration numbers in the 2010 census.
There are still a few of us holding out – we’re going to apply for “endangered species” protection.
Another Drew on December 25, 2011 at 4:29 PM
Dear Jazz,
If I do that for you in New York, do you promise to de-rail the 3rd-party candidates that keep getting Dems elected in Red districts? Otherwise I’m wasting my time.
Love, Santa

“Who cares? They’ll just be a bunch of east coast RINOs anyway!!!”
Scott Garrett was pretty much Tea party even before it existed, that’s why the local newspapers here in NJ hate him. He has a 100% conservative ranking. He’s in my district and we love him. I hope this means Rothman is screwed he’s a sleazy SOB and a abject liar.
scharlesc on December 25, 2011 at 5:10 PM
We had a tough time of it in California. It isn’t getting a lot of traction in the major news but it has been discovered that the Democrats corrupted the process in California.
We recently voted for a citizen commission to draw up new districts. The commission said they wanted to hear “from the communities”. So the Democrats got a line of ringers to show up at meetings and lobby for the solution proposed by the Democrat party.
