DOJ: Actually, Holder didn’t play the race card

posted at 3:25 pm on December 21, 2011 by Tina Korbe

In a statement to Greta Van Susteren, a Department of Justice spokesperson said that, actually, Holder didn’t invoke his race as a reason the “more extreme segment” of his critics oppose him. The DOJ statement reads:

That is a complete distortion of the attorney general’s comment. His comments both in the article and elsewhere made clear that he believes much of the criticism launched against him [is] unfortunately the typical Washington gotcha game. A simple reading of those comments show he was referring to how he is identified with the president given their close relationship and all they share in common, including their ideology. The position of the attorney general has been a target for partisan attacks, and, given the critical work that this attorney general is doing at the Department of Justice, it’s no surprise that some are engaging in such tactics. His critics rightly view the attorney general as a progressive force, and, given our current political environment, there will be those who use any opportunity to score political points.

Holder and the DOJ just can’t seem to resist digging themselves in deeper and deeper, can they? Holder’s bald invocation of race in an interview with The New York Times cannot be explained away. It speaks plainly to those who have any mind at all for reading comprehension. Let’s review his comments. From The New York Times piece in question:

Of that group of critics, Mr. Holder said he believed that a few — the “more extreme segment” — were motivated by animus against Mr. Obama and that he served as a stand-in for him. “This is a way to get at the president because of the way I can be identified with him,” he said, “both due to the nature of our relationship and, you know, the fact that we’re both African-American.”

Seems pretty clear to me. He thinks his more extreme critics are motivated by the ill will they feel toward the president, and he thinks those critics conflate him with the president because Obama and he are both African-American. Perhaps that does not mean Holder thinks his critics dislike him because he is black, but it does mean he thinks his critics assume he and Obama can properly be considered substitutes for one another because they are black. To assume two people of the same race are automatically more alike than they are different is, I think, racist — and that’s precisely what Holder claims his critics do.

Now, as it happens, Obama and Holder are two people of the same race who are considerably alike, as the DOJ statement points out. They do, in fact, closely share a particular brand of progressive ideology. But that has nothing to do with race — and Holder’s critics ought to be free to object to that ideology sans accusations of racism.

The DOJ’s argument only further underscores a point Florida Rep. Allen West has made: The attorney general’s use of race as a debate-silencing tactic can best be interpreted as a sign of Holder’s increasing desperation.

For more, Mary Chastain thoroughly dissects the DOJ’s unconvincing statement here.

They’re both incompetent idiots. That’s probably why people view them as stand-ins for one another. There is probably very little component of race involved unless it’s because they both got where they are because of affirmative action allowing them to rise above their level of competence with devastating results.

He was hired by Obama, a choice. And what is a ‘progressive’ head of the DoJ? Can’t they just find someone to uphold the laws as they are written? Or are we handing THE WRITING of the laws over to the DoJ as well as part of the ‘progressive’ agenda?

“the fact that we’re both African-American”

Since when is African-American a race…. ? /s

In scientific actuality its NOT a race – but the race baiters and PC police really don’t understand that. It’s no more an accurate racial description than if I were to go by the equivalent for my ancestry, which would be something like North American-European-American (English, Welsh, Scottish, French-Canadian, American Indian, and likely others).

dentarthurdent on December 21, 2011 at 3:41 PM

His critics rightly view the attorney general as a progressive force,

The DoJ is admitting that Holder, the Idiot, is an America-hater who has no respect for the Constitution. Not that it was difficult for anyone to see this (except the Senate GOP couldn’t figure out what a sh#tweasel Holder was when they were going through confirmation for the worm) but it’s nice to see the DoJ openly admit it. I’d take 25 minutes off their lifetime sentences for this little bit of honesty.

Oh, I get it. If Holder had said “you know, the fact that we’re both men.” it would have been just for identification purposes, as if that were somehow relevant to the subject at hand. How about the fact that Holder is the AG Obama chose and continues in his job because BHO allows him to do so? That’s about all I need to tie Holder to Obama.

It is a method the left has used for years to deflect any examination of their postions. One need not answer ones critics if those critics are deemed racist knuckle draggers.
The left has always placed themselves on a higher plane. An attitude of “Well, if you were as smart as me you would understand”.

http://www.foxnews.com/on-air/hannity/2011/12/09/how-bad-fast-and-furious-holder

ISSA: And one thing that came out very clear today, Sean, is that there is a Rahm Emanuel moment that is pretty obvious, that when this disaster was happening, they decided to be opportunist and use it to expand the gun database that they are now executing by their won regulations in four states and asking Congress to expand nationally. Very clearly, they made a crisis and they are using this crisis to somehow take away or limit people’s second amendment rights.

Catch that?

They want to expand the Registration database for 4 states to the whole country.

They want to use the crisis they created to start down the road to confiscation.

Holder says so. It was better for the banks to “settle.” Of course this sort of pay off doesn’t affect the rest of us….

sandee on December 21, 2011 at 4:24 PM

You have to understand that, in the current liberal racial philosophy, every non-black is a racist, and no black can be a racist. So it doesn’t matter what you say or do, if you’re white you could be tied up and gagged and you’d still be a racist, or you could give away billions to poor blacks and you’d still be a racist.

Basically, the term “racist” has been rendered meaningless under this definition. Since any action you could take doesn’t change your racist status, it doesn’t matter what you do. Might as well follow through with your conservative political agenda, you’re going to be a racist anyway, the only alternative is being a racist with no influence.

Ok, it’s racially motivated and all about race… and Holder should get a pass. Gotcha.

Can I get the specific number of Mexicans that an African-American can have killed before it’s ok for me to ask what he thought he was thinking?

Clearly 300 isn’t nearly enough innocent Mexicans dead due to the botched handling of the Fast & Furious thing under Holder; but is there a limit?

Or does an African-American have carte blanche for having Mexicans killed without a limit? Can Mexicans kill African-Americans without criticism; or does this not go both ways?

And one last question. This was a “failed” project. What would have been different if their plan that involved sending weapons we couldn’t possibly track to violent drug cartels had worked?

What was this supposed to look like in a successful plan?

I’ve still never seen a plan that involved this step and makes any sense at all.

The DoJ statement sounds so political, but of course, Holder is a political appointee and a politician.

BTW

Anthropologists usually divide the world into three races: Negroid, Mongoloid, and Caucasoid.

EEOC lets complainants describe their race anyway they want.

The politically correct terms have changed through the years: colored, Negro, black, African-American.

Obama’s mother was born in Kansas and was of English and Irish descent, i.e., Caucasoid. His father was from Kenya, Negroid. 50-50. At school in Hawaii, Obama accepted that he would be treated as black, not white and exploited his blackness ever since.

Holder was born in Bronx, NY. His parents were born in Barbados. Has anyone done his geneology? Is anyone interested in determining the extent to which he is Negroid, Mongoloid, or Caucasoid?

Like Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Malik Zulu Shabazz, and Louis Farrakhan, Obama and Holder are trying to relive the 1960′s and use the race card to con black Democrats and silence their critics.

Does Howard University have a school of law? Was told that any African American could attend HU, no (or almost no) entrance requirements, (racist tests) and free. Could explain the AG.

Even Ann Coulter and Glen Beck believes the tea party is racist something we liberals have been hammering home since day 1

liberal4life on December 21, 2011 at 3:50 PM

Got any proof for ANY of that?

dentarthurdent on December 21, 2011 at 4:11 PM

According to the Leftist turds at Think Progress, Beck suggested that Tea Party supporters of Newt were basing their support on race.

So, usefulidiot4life’s claim is specious at best, but what did you expect?

BTW, I find it hilarious that Think Progress has the exact same initials as Tea Party.

Perhaps that does not mean Holder thinks his critics dislike him because he is black, but it does mean he thinks his critics assume he and Obama can properly be considered substitutes for one another because they are black.

I dispute even this generalization. Eric Holder’s ancestors came from Barbados, which means they were British slaves and white slave-owners who eventually melded to become free citizens of Barbados. His father and maternal grandparents immigrated to the U.S. to better themselves. Barack Obama is the product of a white, middle-class, 20th century mother and a black, Kenyan student/politician without, apparently, the legacy of slavery.

If we’re going to split hairs about race and/or ethnicity (which we Americans are lamentably prone to do), Eric Holder and Barack Obama don’t have very much in common at all, except some ancestors who came from Africa, and an ideology rooted in adversarial racialism. Certainly their family histories are nothing alike. And what do either one of them make of the new black Americans who actually , willingly, immigrated from Africa and don’t share the same traditions?

The old “us vs. them” African-American adversarial racialism espoused by the likes of Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and Louis Farrakhan, is going to fade away in the 21st century, if we’re lucky, and good riddance.

Let’s look at from another persceptive.

What religion , if any, does Holder subscribe to ?

We have an idea about Obama.

Aren’t most Mexicans Catholic/Christian ?

As are many south border state Americans.

Are all these believers an acceptable loss for the cause ?

Whoever wrote that explanation at DOJ has watched that “These aren’t the droids your’re looking for” scene at least once too often.

Of that group of critics, Mr. Holder said he believed that a few — the “more extreme segment” — were motivated by animus against Mr. Obama and that he served as a stand-in for him. “This is a way to get at the president because of the way I can be identified with him,”

If he’s talking about being an incompetent boob, then he may have a point!

DSchoen on December 21, 2011 at 7:47 PM

Seems pretty clear to me. He thinks his more extreme critics are motivated by the ill will they feel toward the president, and he thinks those critics conflate him with the president because Obama and he are both African-American.

………Holder’s deflecting… trying to change the conversation.

He would much rather be talking about “playing the race card” than he would talking about overseeing a program that is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of people.

WINNING! Or whatever the word is that Sheen was trying to copyright. Honestly, I am so sick of this BS. (Did you know I’m a girl?) And he tells us we really didn’t hear what we heard. (And did I tell you that I’m a girl?) But it isn’t what you thought your heard because I say it wasn’t. (But you knew, that I was a girl, right?) That’s what I see here, but, you’re calling me a GIRL!! Wait a minute, how DARE you call me a girl!! Can’t you see anything beyond sexual identity? You, you, rotten sexist!! That’s how ludicrous this is. If I take every opportunity to tell you I’m black (or a girl) and you finally give in and say “okay, you’re black (a girl)” then you’re the racist. Ai-yai-yai.

I really hate to engage you, because I have a husky that I call Boxarox because he’s dumb as one, and I know you and he would get along just fine, but please see my response above to rightangle, it explains your thouht process perfectly.

Sorry, the above post from me was aimed at Liberal4life or whatever. I was incensed, sorry!

waterytart on December 21, 2011 at 8:20 PM

He wants to have a conversation about race with the nation of cowards. But lets not talk about the death of hundreds of people at his hand…..he is in charge is he not?
