Video: Perry going full populist?

posted at 10:05 am on December 20, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

If Rick Perry’s latest TV spot in Iowa gives any indication, look for a lot more populist rhetoric from the Texas governor in the final days before the caucuses.  Perry’s team launched this attack ad, called “Three Streets,” aimed at both frontrunners in Iowa.  Perry claims Main Street as his constituency, while accusing Mitt Romney of representing Wall Street and Newt Gingrich of getting rich off of K Street:

Don’t underestimate the power of populism in Iowa. It’s not a coincidence that Iowa went in 2008 to the most effective rhetorical populists in both parties, Barack Obama and Mike Huckabee. However, this attack on Bain Capital might make some of Perry’s recent conservative endorsers a little uncomfortable. When Newt Gingrich slapped Romney for getting rich off of bankrupting companies and destroying jobs, conservatives rose in mighty indignation over what they saw as an unfair attack on creative destruction, a key component of healthy capitalism. How is this different than Gingrich’s jab, which was at least prompted by Romney’s attack on Newt’s business dealings with Freddie Mac?

Politico notices Perry going the populist route, too:

Perry’s attack on Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney came as he plodded across northeastern Iowa on a bus tour in which he has desperately tried to position himself as “the only true outsider” in the race.

“The choice shouldn’t be between a Democratic spendaholic and a Republican spendaholic,” the underdog said.

Linking Washington with Wall Street has become a central part of Perry’s stump speech. It allows him to tar Romney for his experience at Bain Capital and Gingrich for his tenure as speaker of the House in one swipe.

“If this was a map of the United States, I could draw the problem in this country very vividly with a straight line between Washington, D.C., and Wall Street,” he told about 80 people who packed into a café here on this town bordering Wisconsin and Illinois for the fourth stop of the day.

“Over the course of the last 15 or so years…Wall Street insiders and Washington lobbyists and Washington insiders have jeopardized our future so much with special-interest self-dealing [and] corrupt, fraudulent activities. It’s not right. It’s unjust, and we’ve got to deal with it.”

Perry did not mention either Gingrich or Romney when using the word “corrupt,” which has powerful and even criminal connotations. But his language left little doubt that he was taking shots at his rivals.

Perry has little choice but to go on the attack at this late stage in an effort to erode the combined standing of Gingrich and Romney.  Perry has run as an outsider since entering the race, so it’s not terribly shocking that he would point that out as a difference between himself and Gingrich, but Romney isn’t a Washington insider.  It’s telling that Perry has chosen to attack Romney for his Wall Street experience rather than his track record as governor of Massachusetts, which offers a target-rich environment but hasn’t succeeded as a campaign strategy for Perry — or anyone else in this race.  The question will be whether conservatives respond with the same high dudgeon to Perry’s attack as they did to Gingrich’s quip earlier this month.

What is so anti-capitalist about Perry’s argument in this ad? He’s pointing out Mitt’s general election weakness- people don’t respond well to politicians who seem to have taken advantage of the system. That’s what Mitt’s work at Bain represents- somebody who got really rich not because they invented something or because they built a company with blood sweat and tears, but because they were sharks.

Is capitalism brutal and bloody? Sometimes yes and we don’t argue with that as long as it’s done within the boundaries of the law and the law is applied equally and fairly to all. But shark like capitalism is not the best type of capitalism to be on display in a national election.

I’m sure in many if not most cases Bain offers a good return on investment to shareholders. But there are valid questions to ask about the positive effects on the economy and in some cases the ethics of what they do.

Look at what happened to Carly Fiorina in CA. She was a great candidate, and everybody hated Barbara Boxer. But a few ads about the layoffs Carly imposed absolutely killed her. Was it right for Carly to lay those people off? Of course it was. But it doesn’t play well, and it won’t with Mitt.

That is the point of Perry’s ad. Perry was a cotton farmer- a type of capitalism with few if any ethical problems, taking no perceived unfair advantage. And it’s the type of work people can relate to.

And MB has the record to back it up. She’s the best conservative in this race. That’s not an opinion, it’s a fact.

Too bad that real conservatives don’t get a chance, we always have to settle for squishy moderates while the left elects the biggest liberal in history.

And Perry has a huge advantage in resources but is polling the same as MB and Santorum. Pretty sad.

Problem:

“Government’s death grip on energy production prevents use of plentiful, affordable resources. Instead, Washington dictates use of hard-to-harness, expensive “alternative” fuels, inadequate to meet ever-growing demand. Alternative energy sources require big taxpayer subsidies and drain money from the economy, where it could be creating jobs and meeting needs without a dime of taxpayer underwriting.

Washington’s own calculations show vast untapped North American resources of oil, natural gas and coal, their discovery and extraction made possible by recent technological advances..”
http://www.ocregister.com/opinion/energy-331929-government-oil.html

Answer:

“We will energize American jobs and national security through executive orders and executive actions that expand energy exploration all across America. Key components of the plan include:

* Expand energy exploration offshore and on federal and private lands across the country by executive order, creating over 1.2 million jobs
* Eliminate current and proposed activist EPA regulations from the Obama administration, saving 2.4 million jobs by 2020 and lowering projected costs by $127 billion
* Reduce, rebuild, and refocus the EPA federal regulators, returning authority to the states
* Level the playing field for all energy producers, removing Obama’s practice of picking winners and losers and ending the Obama war on coal and natural gas production

I’ll give you the have a heart comment was dumb.

But as a resident of a border state we face some problems:

a) We gots us some illegals. Adults and kids.
b) The Federal Government refuses to enforce the law.

Now, Adult illegals by and large do some kind of work (yes there is of course a smaller criminal element) and that should keep them out of trouble.

What do you do about the kids? Deny them education? Great, then you’re gonna have feral non-english speaking gangs of pre-teens and teenagers tearing around and destabilizing society. Take a trip around some of the nastier towns in Europe and see how well that works out.

Is this situation ideal? No far from it, and I’m not happy about the fact that I pay for illegal kids to go to school. But until the Federal Government does its job, the illegal immigration problem will never be addressed.

You are just an apologist for pro-illegal alien amnesty Rick Perry. Perry opposes E-Verify and the border fence. Perry supported forms of amnesty at the state level. That alone, without even having to get into doltish Perry’s inability to communicate verbally or his record of irresponsible spending, should disqualify Perry from further consideration. Perry should do the honorable thing now and drop out. As it is, he’s just taking up time at the debates and making a complete fool of himself.

bluegill on December 20, 2011 at 2:37 PM

We already give them a high school education. That’s not enough? Do you know how much it costs to subsidize them for college?

You don’t really seem to understand the problem with illegal immigration but you sure seem to dislike that idiot Perry.

As a Texan I have to say that we are generally either stupid rednecks or criminals or some kind of combination of the two. We like politicians who spend like drunken sailors, strap little girls to chairs and Gardasil them into submission, and can’t speak.

As long as they can hold their whiskey and shoot straight, s’all good champ.

From your Hacktastic Palinista Blog you cited…
“As long as Rick Perry supports incentives like the DREAM Act, and refuses to address the Sanctuary City issue, Texas will continue to be a magnet for illegals who want to take advantage of everything great Texas has to offer, without respecting Texas enough to do it legally…”

Neglects to mention that Perry called a special session to pass the anti-sanctuary city bill…Strauss tabled the bill after Dewhurst,Perry and Strauss agreed. Strauss did it to appease a Houston Donor.
