West to Holder: It’s not about your color, it’s about your competence

posted at 4:50 pm on December 19, 2011 by Tina Korbe

Attorney General Eric Holder told The New York Times this weekend that “the more extreme segment” of his Fast and Furious critics are motivated by — you guessed it — racism. But Florida Rep. Allen West will have none of it.

In remarks to The Daily Caller, West interpreted Holder’s shameless rhetorical tactic as a sign of desperation — and called him out for his non-race-related incompetence:

“I think this is absolutely the last card in the deck, and that shows how weak their ground is,” West said in a phone interview. “But, what that means is they want to make white individuals afraid of continuing to put the pressure on Eric Holder because they don’t want to be seen as racist, and that is something that we have got to move beyond.”

West said Holder can’t logically assign race as a motivation behind the criticisms for his handling of Operation Fast and Furious. “What Fast and Furious has to do with is misleading the Congress and the American people about what you knew about this program, and if you did not know anything about this program, then who’s in charge of the Department of Justice?” West said. “It has nothing to do with your race — it has everything to do with competence, with your character and with your ability to lead the Department of Justice.”

West said Holder’s use of race as a way to attack his critics is “the most insidious thing I ever heard.”

“I grew up in the United States military and it’s not about your color, it’s about your competence, it’s about your abilities to execute a mission,” West said. “If your commanding officer turns heat on you, it’s because you have failed to achieve the mission and I think what we’re doing is we’re looking at something that was a very horrible program — this Operation Fast and Furious.”

It’s not about your color, it’s about your competence. What a great lesson for us all!

That Holder himself wanted to introduce race to this equation — that he was the first to bring it up as a possible motivating factor behind the investigations into Fast and Furious and the 60 congressional calls for his resignation — suggests he’s afraid to be judged by his competence alone. That shows Holder at least has some kind of clue. After all, that he can provide no explanation as to how he came to preside — with or without knowledge — over an operation that resulted in the deaths of hundreds of Mexicans and U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry doesn’t make a good case against calls for his resignation.

I have to agree with West *shudder*. Considering that this attorney general has done *nothing* to address the incarceration crisis and the War On Drugs that has produced the incarceration crisis it is laughable to hear him attempt to use racism as a means of deflecting responsibility for a horrible set of policies. But perhaps it is a bit of karma. The failed War on Drugs is also where Fast and Furious comes from, it is another attempt to work around the source of the Mexican cartel problem which is all about gaining access to the American drug market. Until we end Prohibition these failed attempts to intervene in the blackmarket will continue to cost lives and accrue enormous expenditures. As a black man Holder *should* be more cognizant of the way the War on Drugs has devastated inner city areas, like Washington, D.C. where he has lived for years.

Beware the Holderwock, my valiant one!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Obgolf bird, and shun
The frumious alinskysnatch!

Colonel West took his vorpal sword in hand
Long time the destructxome foe he sought
So rested he by an old palm tree
And stood awhile in thought

And as in thought he stood
The Holdewock seeking the country to put to flame
Came whiffling through the slimy swamp
And burbled lying smears as it came!

One, two! Red, White and Blue!
The Colonel’s vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left the Holderwock dead, and with its head
He went gallantphing back

And will thou also defeat the Obgolf bird?
Call me to arms, my beamish knight!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!
With you leading this epic fight!

Democrats proudly adopted the name “The Party of White Supremacy” and committed every inhumane violent act known to mankind (from 1867 to 1977) to keep blacks in “their place.” And to add insult to injury, after killing millions of blacks through their racist institutions, they hired powerful attorneys to keep this information from blacks and to avoid apologizing to blacks.

It’s not about race, it’s about politics. The Right is right about Holder but they should have gone after Alberto Gonzales as much as they’ve gone after Holder. NotCoach on December 19, 2011 at 5:04 PM

Before I respond let me be clear that the Fast and Furious boondoggle was a horrible idea, I have no stake in defending the policy. But I think the answer to your question lies in the word “suspected.” If you replace “gun runner” with “drug mule” then you’ve got a strategy that has been used for decades to prosecute the War on Drugs. Cops seek to buy or sell a large amount of drugs to a suspected dealer and use the false deal as evidence in the trial against them. While I’ve long felt these practices should be counted as entrapment in the drug war, they are even *more* wrongheaded when attempting to stop the sale of illegal guns. As folks have reported these guns end up in the hands of people who use them to enact terror on Mexican citizens, whereas the products used to bust drug dealers tend to end up in the hands of people who are planing on enacting terror on a bag of cheetos.

But however stupid, foolish, and ill conceived the law is, its stated goal, of stopping the cartels access to weapons, emerges from the failed war on drugs.

libfreeordie on December 19, 2011 at 5:23 PM

Well it is kind of about race. Holder’s willingness to try to de-rail the issue by bringing up race has worked as a tactic in several instances. Look at the entitlement reform pushback today. Voter ID. School Choice. Placement of PP facilities. Okay, I’ll stop.

DanMan on December 19, 2011 at 5:23 PM

ninjapirate on December 19, 2011 at 5:13 PM

You’ll have to give us more than a single example in order to make your case. With Stedman, we have several examples of his utter arrogance, not to mention his utter incompetence.

Calling his critics “racists” is a good start. Did Alberto ever do that?

And Stedman’s missive to throw out the Philly Voter Intimidation Case speaks volumes. Did Alberto do anything as racist?

Get back to us, the Spin should be hilarious.

He’s a Liberal and a Hard Leftist and that’s what they do!
Of course, screaming “Racism!” and “Bigotry!” over and over as loud as he can, always provides a smokescreen so that he doesn’t have to face the fact that there are real substantive disagreements in play, as well. If he can keep the spectre of racism in front of everyone’s eyes, nobody will notice that he has no other arguments to present.

Seven Percent Solution on December 19, 2011 at 5:44 PM

Yes … racist Republicans

ColumbusConservative on December 19, 2011 at 5:16 PM

Why, that’s redundant, of course.

I think West and the other black dude in congress and all the black GOP Govenors and mayors, Cain’s available, see what JC Watts is up to, hop in a minivan and swing up and grab Steele, maybe try to sneak Jindal in ( he could pass if he was in the back), then march right in to Holder’s office and say enough is enough!

tommyhawk on December 19, 2011 at 5:45 PM

Not unless being black makes you use drugs more.

Oh that’s cute, you believe higher rates of black incarceration for drug crimes suggests black people use more drugs than other groups. Something tells me you’ve never been to a frat party at a Big 10 school.

libfreeordie on December 19, 2011 at 5:45 PM

Let me guess, the colonel is a coward and a racist. Isn’t that right Holder?

Flange on December 19, 2011 at 4:57 PM

..technically, Allen West is a Lieutenant Colonel.

The War Planner on December 19, 2011 at 5:46 PM

What about Holder’s racism against Latinos? He didn’t, and doesn’t, seem to care how many hundreds of Mexican Latinos he killed with his Gun Running.

Indeed.

Not unless being black makes you use drugs more.

And if that’s the best you can manage for an argument, all you’re demonstrating is that liberals like yourself are the real racists.

northdallasthirty on December 19, 2011 at 5:41 PM

Of course they’re the racists. It’s the Socialists who want to pat minorities on the head, throw them some of our money, make them generationally dependent on the State … and control them.

To keep minorities in their place and to control them – it’s what these Socialists want, and it’s what they do.

Oh come now, only one major conservative is making the case for an end to criminal injustice policies that work to ensure generational poverty. The rest of y’all are in lockstep with Democrats on continuing the prosecute the drug war, in denying student aid to anyone with a misdemeanor drug arrest, to making it nearly impossible for released felons to get a job/education in order to better themselves and avoid falling back into criminal activity. To suggest that only Democrats endorse these anti-liberty policies is unfair, indeed it is why Ron Paul isn’t doing better in the GOP primary.

libfreeordie on December 19, 2011 at 5:49 PM

But however stupid, foolish, and ill conceived the law is, its stated goal, of stopping the cartels access to weapons, emerges from the failed war on drugs.

libfreeordie on December 19, 2011 at 5:23 PM

HA has already exposed the real aim of F & F: to advocate tougher Gun Control Laws. See this HA thread from 12/7

As soon as amnesty for illegals is announced by Obama,
laraza and Calderon will re-appear in the media for their victory dance .
Its not like living latinos and mexicans care about their own people dying..in mexico .

burrata on December 19, 2011 at 5:51 PM

Thank you from the bottom of my heart Rep. West. I would be ever so proud to vote for you as president(not who we now have in the wh) or VP. Keep it up, you are getting to those who don’t like you? BTW, I would have done the same for Cain.

Am I the only one wondering if Obama and Holder have the same view on this subject. Professor Gates keeps coming to mind.

LOL! Steadman. I like it!

Wait…You mean that Holder guy is not Oprah’s boyfriend??

Ladysmith CulchaVulcha on December 19, 2011 at 5:32 PM

Most sources credit Dennis Miller for first noting the resemblance.

Del Dolemonte on December 19, 2011 at 5:53 PM

Its praising Obama to agree with Col West that its bullsh*t for Holder to claim “racism” on a legit scandal? Whose brain is broken again?

You’re not agreeing with West, and you’re sitting here spinning for Holder by trying to claim the “war on drugs” made him do it.

Leftist pig? Intense. But you’re right, I only became critical of the War on Drugs after Obama became President, because I hate Bush. Under Bush I liked the War on Drugs because it made Bush look bad. But when I say the War on Drugs produces failed policies like Fast and Furious that’s an endorsement of Obama, am I following you?

libfreeordie on December 19, 2011 at 5:43 PM

Yup, because you are blaming the war on drugs, NOT the Obama administration, for Fast and Furious.

You are spinning to protect Obama and Holder.

northdallasthirty on December 19, 2011 at 5:54 PM

But perhaps it is a bit of karma.

libfreeordie on December 19, 2011 at 5:01 PM

What a strange way to refer to the deaths of a bunch of people, most of whom had nothing to do with the anti-narco effort.

Nom de Boom on December 19, 2011 at 5:55 PM

man this libfree girl is dumber than most isn’t she?

Drugs are illegal so someone declared a war on them and it has had mixed results. About as effective as the war on poverty I’d say.

Guns are legal, libs want to restrict them so they dreamed up the idea of flooding them into hands of criminals to declare guns are out of control and must be regulated.

Exactly the same libfree. No difference.

libfreeordie on December 19, 2011 at 5:49 PM

Oh, come on now, I don’t give a damn about your “drug war” crap. My comment was about you Socialists and how you desire to make minorities generationally dependent on the State.

That should’ve been clear to even … you. You just keep patting them on the head, confiscating my money and handing it to them. You just keep making them dependent on the State. He who becomes dependent on the State, is controlled by the State.

Dependence on the State is Socialism … by definition.

Or, put differently, I don’t believe the police and law enforcement are as racist as you scream they are.

Isn’t that your excuse? The only reason black people could possibly be incarcerated more is due to racism?
