Ron Paul now the favorite on InTrade to win Iowa
posted at 6:15 pm on December 19, 2011 by Allahpundit
Via Dave Weigel, I’m torn between hoping it doesn’t happen since that would almost certainly mean Romney will be the nominee and hoping that it does just because blogging the chaos in the aftermath would be so much fun. On the one hand, you’d have the Karl Roves of the world breathing into paper bags, and on the other you’d have Paul fans outraged that the national media has dared start to vet him. Postworthy anger from every corner for days on end.

Naturally, as Paul’s InTrade odds have soared in Iowa, so have Romney’s odds on being the nominee. He’s up to 68.4 percent as I write this while Gingrich has collapsed to 8.3 percent — just one tenth of one percent ahead of, um, Ron Paul thanks to all the terrible polls for him today. The Gallup tracking poll has him down to a two-point lead nationally over Romney after leading by 14 just 10 days ago. And here’s one more Iowa poll, this time from Insider Advantage, that Ed and Tina didn’t get to this morning:

Not only is Perry starting to peel off some of Newt’s votes, Gingrich’s core demographic support — the 65+ crowd — has apparently begun to abandon ship. If that’s true, i.e. Insider Advantage isn’t an outlier, then he’s truly done for. I can’t fathom why he insisted on “staying positive” in Iowa while Paul’s campaign and Romney’s Super PAC were busy tearing him to pieces on the air. Maybe he calculated that he could best ease voters’ worries about the erratic “bad Newt” by showing discipline and training his fire exclusively on Obama and policy critiques. Looks like he crapped out on that bet, and with no more debates scheduled before the caucuses, there’s no opportunity for him to turn the tide. As for Paul, as good as his numbers look right now, I wonder if he’s surging a week too early. Beltway Republicans might not care about him winning Iowa unless and until he threatens Romney in New Hampshire too — which may not be as unlikely as it seems — but the Iowa Republican establishment doesn’t want a batch of “does Iowa still matter?” stories on January 4. There are plenty of undecideds still out there to be swayed; could be that some of the state’s prominent social conservatives will now line up behind Perry instead of, say, Santorum simply because Perry’s got a better chance of heading off a Paul victory.
Here’s the latest archived clip rescued from oblivion by C-SPAN junkie Andy Kaczynski, a 1999 quick take of Newt describing himself as a “Theodore Roosevelt progressive” when it comes to ethics and fighting corruption. Matt Lewis is right that the P-word meant something a little different 12 years ago than it does now, but even the current definition fits Newt a bit better than it should. Read Mark Steyn in NRO on “The Gingrich Gestalt”: “I’d prefer to formulate it this way: Gingrich is a pushover for progressivism who’s succeeded in passing himself off as a hard-line right-wing bastard.” Oh, and be sure to read Philip Klein’s response too to Ron Paul fans who want it both ways when it comes to the media taking their guy seriously but not so seriously that they start looking at those old newsletters again. Exit quotation: “Rick Perry and Mitt Romney have both attacked each other for what was written in their respective books. If either of those books had included a number of overtly racist statements, their candidacies would be over before they started. If they used the Ron Paul defense – that they didn’t write the words themselves, they didn’t know what was in the books and don’t even know who wrote them, it would only make matters worse. They could kiss their political careers goodbye.”

Eh, don’t be. Like the other Vets here I’m one of millions who volunteered to do the job. I just happened to get winged. The experience changes ones perspective on the world and the use of military force. You realize that the ridiculous “isolationist” policies of Ron Paul and his followers would never work for far too many reasons to type out tonight. There is evil in the world and no amount of “being nice” to our enemies and pulling back from the rest of the world will change their desire to kill us. The thought that would ever work is infantile at best. But hey, if thats their Ron Paul dream then let them try it on for size. They remind me of the crazy leftists who tried to go to Iraq to be human shields: delusional, at best.

MelonCollie on December 19, 2011 at 11:15 PM
There is evil in the world and you have to be extremely selective when deciding to engage an enemy. You can’t compulsively fight every form of evil around the world. I say we start fighting the evil here at home and then if it is necessary to confront external threats so be it. We have it ASS backwards!!! The country is rotting from the inside out and we have the best military men in the world chasing proverbial windmills in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Beginning in 1978, Rep. Ron Paul’s (R-TX) name graced newsletters that were released on a seemingly monthly basis: Ron Paul’s Freedom Report, Ron Paul Political Report, The Ron Paul Survival Report. “The Freedom Report’s online archives only go back to 1999,” but The New Republic’s Jamie Kirchick recently tracked down physical copies of many of the pre-1999 reports.
According to Kirchick, they’re peppered with a “decades worth of obsession with conspiracies, sympathy for the right-wing militia movement, and deeply held bigotry against blacks, Jews, and gays.” Here are a few examples:
On David Duke: “Our priority should be to take the anti-government, anti-tax, anti-crime, anti-welfare loafers, anti-race privilege, anti-foreign meddling message of Duke, and enclose it in a more consistent package of freedom.”
On Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: “A comsymp, if not an actual party member, and the man who replaced the evil of forced segregation with the evil of forced integration.”
On African-Americans: “I’ve urged everyone in my family to know how to use a gun in self defense. For the animals are coming.”
On Gays: “Homosexuals, not to speak of the rest of society, were far better off when social pressure forced them to hide their activities.”

I mean, he against the drug war, and i’m not going to kid myself and believe that white people don’t do more drugs than minorities. Yet 60% of people sent to jail for drug are minorities. That in itself is a serious WTF.
Then people complain about him being an anti-Semite for his stands on Israel, yet he has avowed not to sell weapons that could harm Israeli supremacy in the region, nor would he block an Israeli nuclear strike on Iranian nuke facilities. eliminate $13 billion in aid to Israel’s enemies which Obama provides, at the cost of $3 billion to Israel(sounds like a more than fair trade to me).
If this is all we have to complain about Ron Paul, I’m sure he will be the nominee. Ron has never even been taped saying these things, it isn’t an effective attack on him in this age unless their is video of him.
If you want footage of a Republican candidate spouting racist remarks, look up Newt Gingrich at the KU Dole Institute of Politics in 2009. That is bigotry at its finest.

I don’t know, but somethign tells me if Romney couldn’t win the nomination in 2008 with McCain and Huckabee as his opponents, he’s not going to get it done this year either as RomneyCare is a bigger issue now.
I would have thought he would have locked this thing up with the implosion of Perry but he hasn’t.
What’s odd about Romney is he didn’ seek reelection in Mass, so why did he feel the need to go with the liberal flow? He should have pushed the state to the right and he would be getting credit for doing that. It’s not just a matter of having executive experience, it’s what you do with it while you have the power.

You need to know something about these markets like InTrade. Their predictive value is related to similar issues on the stock market. When there is high volume on an issue, you can expect the pricing reflects the best estimate based upon current knowledge. The more people participating in pricing decisions, the more accurate the price.
So click on Paul’s picture and then “view all open contracts” or whatever they are calling it these days, which lists all of the bids and offers outstanding. You’ll see there are very few of either. Therefore, it is not a reliable predictor, and the price should not be viewed with confidence.
During the general election, the Presidential race will have tens of thousands of contracts at stake, perhaps hundreds of thousands. What a couple hundred on the primary tell you isn’t worth knowing.

So why don’t you Ron Paul true believers stop fooling around and write and say what you actually believe: that a global conspiracy orchestrated by a cabal of (Jewish) international bankers headed by the (Jewish) Rothschild family manipulates whole countries into fighting interminable wars for purposes of profit, the US included–actually, the US especially. The reason why Ron Paul claims the Iranian mullahs are justified in seeking nuclear weapons is because he views their country as a victim of this ‘Zionist’ conspiracy, targeted because Iran poses a threat to Israel. And of course, US foreign policy is completely under the influence of the insidious Zionist lobby. In short, Ron Paul’s worldview is not so different from the conspiratorial drivel outlined in The Protocols of the Elders of Zion. Your fearless leader Dr. Ron Paul is an ideological cousin to the late Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi–or another dictator I could name but won’t for fear of invoking Godwin’s Law–and more pernicious than either, since Paul claims to be an American patriot.
Put it all on the table, you disingenuous twits. Show us what you’re really all about. And here’s a newsflash: those things in which you so fervently believe are emphatically not conservative beliefs, and have the additional downside of being glaringly untrue. You are not conservatives and you are not Republicans and you don’t have the right to call yourselves either.
So what are you afraid of, Ron Paul lovers? Think we can’t handle the truth; rather, The Truth? Tell us all about the Zionists and the Neocons and the Bilderburgers and the Illuminati. Don’t hold back.

I don’t want to police the world, but I think we all must recognize that America has a legitimate role in the world in maintaining order. Sticking our head in the sand is just not realistic and neither is Ron Paul on this issue.

could be that some of the state’s prominent social conservatives will now line up behind Perry instead of, say, Santorum
NOPE! Santorums pandering for the last year in Iowa has paid off for him and will make Iowa the laughing stock!
As much as it hurts me to say this the Evangelicals of western Ia seem to be all aligned behind him. One big one yet to come in in the next hour is the family values group, the group behind the ouster of the three judges who found a right to gay marriage in the IA constitution.
I have no doubt they will line up behind Santorum.
this will mean a Mitt Romney or Ron Paul winner unless Newt can hang on or improve, the Mitt and Paul attack ads are brutal. relentless and mostly fabrications but the same sheeple that throw their support to a 3% Santorum are influenced by them.
A sad day in politics as I feel newt would be the best .
For you Perry fans he is going no-where here. There are only so many of the mobilized evangelicals and his pandering started way late for that head in the sand group.
IMHO opinion as an Iowan

Alright.
That’s enough!
Logboy lost his arm and part of his other hand protecting you and this country!
You’re comment is purely inflammatory not to mention repulsive.
This thread has had it all. Thinly veiled anti-semitism, outright Trutherism, abject conspiracist revisionism, now we have an disabled combat vet being personally insulted and denigrated.
Hot Air admin, hello?
catmman on December 20, 2011 at 10:13 AM
C’man man…..
Did everyone in the Mainstream Media forget about his racist rantings in his old newsletters until just today? Did the Republican establishment forget about his racist rantings until just today? Did the Paulites forget that Paul’s racist rantings would make him un-electable?
Paul is only around to split the vote while he’s useful. As soon as he’s not useful (today) he’ll be buried by his past.
And people rant and rave about Newt’s past?
C’mon man…..
Is the majority of Republican voters this stupid?
oldroy on December 20, 2011 at 10:14 AM
The racist comments in Ron Paul’s newsletters from a few years ago will be a huge factor if he gets the nomination (Lord, I hope he can be dispensed with soon)…
Paul has said that if he’s not the nominee then he won’t support the GOP candidate against Obama. He won’t rule out a third party run. He has a history of racism and antisemitism. What a nauseating character.

Conflict generates hits. Something had to make up for the Palin fade.
In return for the largesse, I’d like the people running this show–Allahpundit, Ed, Tina–to call out Congressman Ron Paul and his glassy-eyed, cult-like pack of conspiracy theorists and bigots for what they are. That fringe lunatic and his true believers have been treated with deference and respect by just about everyone–I’m guessing partly out of fear Paul will go for a Ross Perot-like third party split. Of the GOP primary candidates, only Bachmann, so far, has had the guts to go after that weaselly, antisemitic, America Firster fraud. Of the bloggers, Ace of Ace of Spades HQ has showcased the good Doctor’s more outrageous ideas and associations.
Your turn, Hot Air. Time to speak out. Otherwise, this influx of Ron Paul acolytes and Stormfront trolls during open registration is just a snake-and-mongoose exercise in cynical manipulation.
troyriser_gopftw on December 20, 2011 at 10:35 AM
I join with other faithful Hot Air posters in calling for a culling of the herd regarding the Paulnut Invasion which happened during the last two Open Registrations.
kingsjester on December 20, 2011 at 10:39 AM
oldroy, I didn’t know about Paul’s racist backstory until just yesterday, and I do try to keep up with the political scene. I’m sure most conservative voters are in the same boat on that score.
During the Bush years the media used Paul as a kind of ‘republican voice of conscience’ to trash W’s efforts. Now the media is likely to use Paul – the front running racist – to try to tarnish the whole GOP. He seems to be making a career out of being the MSM’s useful idiot.

Troy, whoa. You’re going off on a tangent. First off let me correct you because you like conflating things for dramatic effect. The Protocols of the Elders of Zion has already been exposed as a hoax. Sorry to take the wind out of your sails.
Now regarding this meme that the Rothschilds run the entire world, that is incorrect. Yes, there are large banking and merchant families of inconceivable wealth (DuPont, Astor, etc.) which date back to the middle ages that throw their weight around their globe but I wouldn’t say there is one dominant family. And this obsession with claiming that those who point out this fact are somehow anti-Semitic is another accusation which falls on deaf ears. Yes, there are elements who despise the jews and use this fact as an excuse to discriminate them as well as their state, but that’s besides the point. The irrefutable fact is that the citizens aren’t in the steering wheel and it’s been that way for quite some time.
To be Conservative is to be vigilant and suspicious of centralized power. There are no sacred cows. Why do you think Kirk and Jefferson placed such a stress on a rural society because they were keenly aware of the potential corruption which were to be birthed in cities? Right now the Sodom and Gomorrah on this planet are New York City and Washington D.C.
Troy, unlike you I will not denounce that you’re not a conservative. On the contrary actually. You are a misguided conservative being manipulated by your emotions because you cannot rationalize the fact that the people that deployed you are duplicitous vermin. I understand that you love your country and wish to defend her from evil, but you need to examine the big picture. So implore you to read the works of deceased historian Anthony Sutton to understand what I am talking about. I really wish it was US versus THEM but it isn’t. There is no US.

It looks like Bachmann can’t make up much ground…so GO RON PAUL!

With all due respect to the folks asking to have this commenter banned because of comments to Logboy, reconsider. These anti-military rants are important insights to the psyche of Ron Paul supporters. Most are polite and only stab around at their hatred of the folks in the service with innuendo. These latest ones lay it all out there for the most part and their comments are instructive to say the least.
It pains me too to read these hateful comments to a guy that’s given as much as that kid has, but this is important to hear. And Logboy knows it too.
Let them keep talking.
hawkdriver on December 20, 2011 at 11:32 AM
If Ron Paul wins the nomination, I am staying home…I can’t vote for him. Statements like “I think this fence business is designed and may well be used against us and keep us in”. Wow, talk about conspiracy theories no thanks. Supporting Cynthia McKinney in 2008 enough said there. I will never vote for him, even if I like his fiscal stance. The Presidency is about the entire package. We already tried one that was only partially filled and that didn’t work out so great.
Asianeyes704 on December 20, 2011 at 12:42 PM
Ah, and here you are proving Coulter’s point regarding the left’s infallibility of victimhood. He isn’t being mocked or criticized for what happened to him; his positions are being discussed and refuted. Keep up with your appeal to emotion, the infallibility of victims, and your host of other logical fallacies – anything to avoid discussing content of opinions.

You might be a crank if …
You might be a crank if you can quote the melting point of steel from memory
You might be a crank if you’ve committed to memory the secret combination to the box that holds the scepter in National Treasure
You might be a crank if you consider changing from an Art Bell devotee to Alex Jones devotee a step up.
Fact: Alex Jones is allied with the likes of Dennis Kucinich and Ron Paul.
Fact: Ron Paul is a racist nutjob crank.
Fact: The media intentionally holds it’s fire on Paul because he helps Obama.
This country is so overrun with liberalism, it’s just disheartening. It’s like it’s time to figure out how to get to New Zealand.
