Bill Press: It’s time for Tebow to STFU

posted at 7:40 pm on December 15, 2011 by Allahpundit

Via Radio Equalizer. When the Broncos nip the Packers in the Super Bowl on a miraculous, last-second, 85-yard mad dash from scrimmage by one Mr. Tim Tebow, this guy will be cast straight into the lake of fire. Along with me, of course, because that’s what happens to the atheist Jets fans in the End Times.

I honestly don’t understand why it’s objectionable for Tebow to thank God in his post-game interviews but not for every halfwit at the Grammys to do it when accepting their award. The only obvious difference is that it’s clear from his lifestyle that Tebow really means it whereas with other celebs it often seems like more of a check-the-box thing. Reminds me of the concept of “ceremonial deism” in the Supreme Court’s church-and-state jurisprudence: Sometimes the state can get away with a reference to God — so long as it’s clear that they’re not taking it too seriously. Somehow Press has ended up at a place culturally where the ceremonial deists are acceptable but the sincere believers need to STFU. How come? Agree with him or not, at least you can respect Tebow for meaning what he says.

I’m an atheist and I have no problem with Tebow and his stating of his beliefs, of course as a Florida Gator fan I’ve been hearing and seeing them for 6 years. It it pretty funny to see some so many people get so riled up and accuse him of dishonesty or that he is a hypocrite or only does it because he is in front of a camera or microphone, they obviously know nothing about this young man, he is as honest and sincere as they come. It is really too bad that in a time when so many athletes set a bad an example you have one that is doing things right and so many hope for him to fail!

And like someone else said that a-hole Press, if it upsets you so much don’t listen!!!

lahlon on December 16, 2011 at 7:04 AM

I wonder what Mr Press would say if Mr Tebow was a Muslim? Just wondering is all.

ksmoola1 on December 16, 2011 at 7:09 AM

Most of the people turning Tim Tebow into a symbolic leader are his critics. The rest of us are just laughing at these insecure morons. He’s a football quarterback, playing the game of football. Making him out to be some kind of revolutionary in the world of sports conduct is ridiculous.

That said, I’d prefer the off-field and on-field conduct of Tim Tebow to the on-field and off-field conduct of Michael Vick.

BKennedy on December 16, 2011 at 7:14 AM

I have a couple of points here – and for the interests of full disclosure I was raised in Colorado and I am a Broncos fan.

1. How can you call Tebow a disgrace? Is it because he doesn’t let his gun go off in a club, take drugs, have orgies on yachts or sleep with a bunch of groupies? He’s a good person of good moral character, he tries hard has an infectiously positive attitude and his teammates like him. With him you’ll get 100% of his efforts and he has a strong will to win.

2. I think if Tebow were a devout Muslim there wouldn’t be an issue here with the media. In fact if he were praying five times a day on the field MSNBC would probably be doing a special about him and all of the adversity he faced in his task of becoming an NFL player. I know it a counterfactual statement but I feel it’s true.

Regardless of his faith, he seems to be a genuinely good person and I find it amusing people want to judge him on his moral character or religious faith rather than his merits as an NFL quaterback.

bentman78 on December 16, 2011 at 7:16 AM

Each time Tim Tebow’s knee hits the ground, it revives hope in me. By taking those few seconds to acknowledge and give thanks to his Creator, Lord, and Friend, he reminds me that, no matter how grim things look for America under the lawless and morally squalid Obama regime, Goodness always overcomes Evil. It’s the only way evil will ever be truly overcome.

And in a year filled with scenes of angry, filthy, cursing protesters, demanding countless “rights” and entitlements, it’s inspiring to see this young man, bending down to give thanks. No demands. Just thanks.

May God bless and keep you, Tebow!

Bill Press, you are to be pitied . . . you and your cold, desiccated stone of a heart.

I’m sure the spittle was flying as Press issued his foaming at the mouth rant. Boy, watching the heathens go apoplectic over Tebow is definitely the highlight of this NFL season.

tommyboy on December 16, 2011 at 8:01 AM

BKennedy on December 16, 2011 at 7:14 AM

Vick, like all criminals, has the right to be rehabilitated. But who honestly thinks, if he hadn’t been caught and punished, he wouldn’t still be torturing dogs? He is what he has proven himself to be. All else is for public consumption and to get back on the money train. But he is lionized by the sports press and Tebow is ridiculed and reviled. What a world.

BKennedy on December 16, 2011 at 7:14 AM

Exactly! I haven’t watched the NFL for over 10 years, now. I would have never heard of Tebow (outside of the college game) if not for the Bill Press’ and the rest of the dumbest group of people on the planet, sports journalists.

And it is because of nothing more then those same journalists being insecure. I myself am glad there are people on this planet who devote themselves to something bigger than they are, and walk the walk. The world (and especially the Philippines with their new hospital) is a better place for it. Only insecure leftist morons could possible object.

MNHawk on December 16, 2011 at 8:26 AM

What Tebow is lacking is a half a dozen pit bulls, and some hookers…than no one would dare speak ill of him…

One has a positive influence on many; the other, not so much on anyone.
Go away Mr. Press

I get it. Spawns of Satan don’t like anything remotely spiritual to come across their field of vision or within range of their hearing. They prefer and condone any forms of immoral decadence/depravity and fight for it’s right to exist. These individuals can usually be found supporting Progressive’s/Democrats. Much to Scoop Jackson’s dismay I’m sure.

angryed on December 16, 2011 at 9:05 AM

I’m conflicted about Tim Tebow. On the one hand, as a red-meat loving, liberal-baiting, unabashed evangelical, two-time University of Florida grad, I couldn’t be happier for him or prouder of him.

On the other hand, I’ll never forgive him for taking the top spot in my (then 6 year old) son’s pantheon of heroes five years ago, and moving me down to second on the “people I want to grow up to be just like” list. Although, in fairness, my kid’s got the order right if maybe not the relative positions!

mikec3 on December 16, 2011 at 9:11 AM

The media has been decrying the lack of a moral role model for the kids. When they get one what happens? They start calling him a disgrace and need to stfu. Tebow is a leader and winner. He was that way for the Gators and will be that way for the Broncos. He left the field after the last game to visit a boy who’s sick and is being helped by the Tebow Foundation and Make A Wish. How many other athletes are so committed. Screwyoupress.

Kissmygrits on December 16, 2011 at 9:17 AM

Pray without ceasing. In everything give thanks.

Oh and I guess get your riot gear together so you can be ready for the Bronco’s Super Bowl win. /s

The next time I hear anyone…anyone…say anything even vaguely critical of a Christian, whether it’s true or not, I am going to hold my breath til my face is beet red and that big vein in my forehead pulsates. Then I’m going to leap to my feet, point my finger at the offender and scream, “You Christophobe, BIGOTTED CHRISTOPHOBE.”

Then I might call the ACLU and my local newspaper and weep and wail some more.

It’s only fair.

Right?

Bill Press, you idiot. You need to take your own advice and …

TerryW on December 16, 2011 at 9:59 AM

“The concept of diversity encompasses acceptance and respect.
It means understanding that each individual is unique,
and recognizing our individual differences. These can be along
the dimensions of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs,
political beliefs, or other ideologies.”

You can hear the hate and anger in Mr. Press’s voice, it seems he needes to take a 6 week course in Tolerance, Diveristy and Sensitivity Training.

Oh wait, Mr Tebow is a Christain, who’s hobby is helping poor sick children and Mr. Press is a Liberal member of the media, who’s hobby is rubbing elbows with other Liberal elites at Washington & NYC cocktail parties.

How dare Mr. Tebow selfishly make Liberal elites feel that he is more deserving of the nonexistent God’s Love. How intolerate and insensitive on Mr. Tebow’s part.

Wallythedog on December 16, 2011 at 10:42 AM

Say… isn’t Colorado in play in 2012???

Collect all the anti-Tebow, anti religion tripe from the left – then play a loop over and over and over from Sept-Nov 2012.

You will peel off 20-30% of the latino vote from Dems on religion alone.

Odie1941 on December 16, 2011 at 10:47 AM

Why does it matter to you what he says. If you do not like it turn down the sound or change the channel. I am so tired of this biggoted hatred coming from the left.

huskerthom on December 16, 2011 at 10:54 AM

I applaud Tim Tebow for his stand for Christ. With all that’s going on in our country and our world, we need the Lord more than ever.

1ConcernedMom on December 16, 2011 at 11:11 AM

Tim Tebow’s PR team is world-beating. Whoever the Republicans nominate needs to use them.

He is being deliberately controversial, getting acres of news coverage, massively boosting his profile and also his earning power. Genius.

Bill Press claims to be a person of faith. Geez. Why do I see people of faith being critical of Tim Tebow (usually out of ignorance) and see many agnostics & atheists who support him? Exhibit #2 – that crazy rabbi who posted an idiotic blog earlier this week.

I am a follower of Jesus and sometimes I am embarrassed at the lazy ignorance, or perhaps outright hatred, spouted out so many of my peers.

22044 on December 16, 2011 at 11:54 AM

It’s a prayer of gratitude. I say one every morning as I am pulling out of the driveway on my way to work. Most people say one before eating a meal. Why are people having such a problem with this?

lea on December 16, 2011 at 12:29 PM

Here’s the thing… Its not ok for EITHER of them to “thank God” because God really does not give a rat’s behind who wins NFL football games OR Grammy Awards. To suggest God has a direct hand in either case is insulting and offensive.

deadrody on December 16, 2011 at 12:32 PM

Once again, Mr. Tebow has made no attempt to grandstand his faith. When he chooses to pray during a game, it’s not in anybody’s face, not in the way, not in the open. He goes to the sidelines behind a bench and takes a knee. He doesn’t take one second of time away from the game, unlike the egomaniacs who do a 15-second dance session every time they score, as if they’ve never scored before.

That this unobtrusive, humble, non-threatening behavior angers some says volumes about them, but nothing about Mr. Tebow.

God bless you, Tim. You won’t make me into a Bronco’s fan, but please keep doing exactly what you’re doing. The rubes hate it when someone steps away from the “formula” and succeeds, they fear what they do not understand.

I love how the very same people that would respond to a complaint about the objectionable content of a TV show with, “If you don’t like it then change the channel” are the same ones getting so riled up over Tebow mentioning Jesus every chance he gets.

If he wasn’t winning games for Denver his new found stardom and the resulting hate-fest would be amusing to watch.

burserker on December 16, 2011 at 3:42 PM

I applaud Tebow for his faith, and surely he knows how this is going over in some quarters. There is a Scripture that says believers have a fragrant aroma to other believers, but the stench of death to those who do not believe.

Obviously, Mr. Press is convicted by his own lifestyle and dare I say it sin, and has to launch a vicious diatribe against Tebow, because Tebow’s outspoken faith makes him so uncomfortable.

May all who profess a sincere faith in Christ show the same boldness or even greater boldness to a lost and dying world.

MJScanlonOH on December 16, 2011 at 6:00 PM

“I don’t care about Tebow’s religion. I don’t hate him. He does seem cocky to me, not in a loud in your face way, but cocky is cocky. Reasonable people can disagree about that.”

Being quietly confident is not the same as being cocky.

I want all the liberal haters of Tim Tebow to just shut up.

I firmly believe that God keeps blessing Tim Tebow because of his powerful witness while the Tebow haters just keep spewing their hate. Tebow always conducts himself with class and dignity even while the haters are mocking him. He is such a great example of living the life that Jesus wants us to live as Christians.

sherrimae on December 16, 2011 at 11:26 PM

falsecast,

A very good point, but here’s the thing. Reggie White had proven his bona fides as a top-notch football player before anybody cared to notice his “religiosity”. Add in that he was a gigantic individual specimen, and spice it with he’s a black athlete, and you get a pass.

Tebow, on the other hand, has the nerve to succeed where he has no business succeeding. He wasn’t supposed to do any good as a high-school QB; he was supposed to stink as a college QB; he was never going to be a respected starting QB in the NFL. The haters have always hated that he didn’t fall down when they said he would. Then there’s the Superbowl commercial for Focus on the Family.

I’m the first to admit that he lacks some of the skillset that top-tier playcallers need to run a steadily successful offense in the NFL. He isn’t very successful in a majority of quarters of each game. But the scoreboard tally when the clock hits zero is the final judge of success, and he has been having it.

I almost feel bad for the Patriots. If they win on Sunday, it was only what should have happened, since the Bronco’s recent run has been a fluke, and no biggie. If they lose, it will be all about Tebow did it again, and “is God against the Patriots?”, and fool stuff like that.

That seems to be the NFL’s problem–not Tebow’s. I don’t think that he has intended for the dialogue to be all about him. I wonder if people dislike Tebow more because he is talented or because he is humble. I don’t understand all of the fuss except that there seems to be a huge faction of mal contents out to attack anyone who is successful. And so far this kid is leading a successful life. It is unreal how many people are wishing for his failure. Hate the game, not the player.
