They need just enough Republicans to join them to deflect the blame or they know they will get killed in the elections.

It should be pretty obvious that the Democrats polled this and found they were losing on the pipeline so they're working out a deal. If the Republicans were smart, they'd insist on the pipeline and get people working.
Does it bother anyone else that they always talk about "paying" for tax cuts? Tax cuts are not an expense and tax rate increases don't always raise revenue. In fact government revenue will dwindle as tax rates increase and more of the "evil rich" take steps to keep more of their money.

Jettisoning the tax could also require Democrats to agree to politically painful savings elsewhere in the budget to replace the estimated $140 billion the tax would have raised over a decade.
The so-called 'Math' they use in these taxes/cuts negotiations drives me crazy! They never take into account a change in people's behavior. Raise taxes and people take steps to avoid paying it, so revenue is never as much as 'estimated'. They talk about tax cuts needing to be "paid for", but when taxes are lower people have more of their own money to spend and invest, so revenues often go UP. And of course, everyone knows this, even the Dems, but they go through the act anyway.

There was a moment on MTP Sunday when brokeback buddy Linda Graham actually took our side.
He dared to ask DNC Dave how much tax on the rich was enough. He glared at DNC Dave and asked:
How much is enough Dave.
Of course Dave had to change the topic.
It got traction for the moment. Will it be long lasting?
Nahhhhhha....

We would like to apologize for the way in which politicians are represented in this programme. It was never our intention to imply that politicians are weak-kneed, political time-servers who are more concerned with their personal vendettas and private power struggles than the problems of government. Nor to suggest at any point that they sacrifice their credibility by denying free debate on vital matters in the mistaken impression that party unity comes before the well-being of the people they supposedly represent. Nor to imply at any stage that they are squabbling little toadies without an ounce of concern for the vital social problems of today. Nor indeed do we intend that viewers should consider them as crabby, ulcerous, little self-seeking vermin with furry legs and an excessive addiction to alcohol and certain explicit sexual practices which some people might find offensive. We are sorry if this impression has come across.
