Video: Holiday commercial sparks warm, fuzzy feelings about — not puppies — guns

posted at 7:10 pm on December 12, 2011 by Tina Korbe

Listen to this advertisement and you’ll reasonably assume that what’s for sale is something forlorn, lonely, cute and cuddly … a stray puppy, perhaps.

“They’ve been mistreated and misunderstood for generations,” the ad begins. “Abusive owners have done severe damage and given these beautiful creatures a bad reputation.”

That’s how it’s supposed to sound. The owner of PRK Arms in Fresno, Calif., brainstormed this brilliant way to sell guns — and, so far, it’s worked. According to a news report from Fresno’s CBS 47 news, the gun shop has seen more business this holiday season than ever before. Among the many new customers are a surprising number of women, who are buying guns in record numbers, according to gun store owners.

No surprise there, really. What woman could resist this pitch?

“You can make a difference by giving a gun a loving home,” the ad says. “These guns want nothing more than to adore and protect you. So, please, have a heart. … PRK Arms has the kinds of guns that need a loving home more than anything else — like AK-47s, Glocks and the biggest selection of AR-15s in Fresno.”

Not surprisingly, the ad has stirred controversy, with some anti-gun activists objecting to the ad’s supposedly misleading nature. But I’d argue that what the ad states is true: Guns are designed as much for defensive protection as for offensive harm. And I agree, too, with what one woman says in the video: Learn how to use one and the scary factor fades.

Obviously, the potential for mishap exists, and gun safety should always be the first priority of a gun owner. But that doesn’t mean guns have no place on a holiday shopping list. The “peace of mind” that comes from a security system — whether a motion-triggered alarm or a well-stocked gun cabinet — is surely a welcome present.

Excellent commercial… tuned just right for the potential target audience.

We don’t need ads like that around here… most of the ads I hear are for safes.

There’s at least two major gun shows a month within 100 miles of home.

Do need more ammo though…

I noticed she disappeared right around the time the stories on Fast & Furious started getting more airtime at CBS.

Even though she said it was a “fake scandal with a cool name”, maybe she realized there was some things about this administration even she couldn’t defend.

Although I never thought I would say it but for the cost of the ammo and sure joy of watching falling plates my S&W MP15-22 has turned into my favorite toy (it did require a bit of modification to add a high quality competition trigger and new bolt springs to fix the FTF issues).

Frankly my S&W MP40 is just plain expensive to use (but oh so fun) and the 300WSM at near $2.50 a shot has been in the closet almost a year without any love.

It isn’t the ad. It’s where this country is headed, which has gun sales soaring again. FBI reported 169,000 (139?) uses of the NICS on Black Friday. A huge surge that outstrips even that experienced commencing the weekend prior to Obama’s election and all thru the fall-winter of ’08-’09.
People know we are headed for violence and turmoil and possibly even civil war, should Obama and his politburo get re-elected. They’re arming up.

Took my wife to the local gun club once to show her how safe and easy it was to learn. When she said it looked complicated I handed my Ruger to my 10 year old son and said, “Honey it’s so easy a child could do it.” He cranked off ten carefully placed rounds and right then and there she knew my boys were being brought up understanding and appreciating guns and learning safe handling. We are a firearms friendly family and proud of it. Training is the key.
Now, if only my wife had been so understanding when my son made his first tandem free fall jump from 12,000 feet at 15..hahaha..that one caused silence in my house for a week. Now he’s a Major with the 101st.
Great add! Great concept and great news coverage getting the real word out.

Check out Rock Island Armory 1911s. They’re superb, I’d say better than Kimbers which cost twice as much.

On that note, all I want for Christmas is a Glock 19…

Kimber has QC issues; and their customer service motto is, We’re Kimber. You suck. Go away.

For a truly reasonably-priced .45, check out American Tactical Imports. Especially the enhanced Commander-type. Under $400 with the bells and whistles that most people want. And their quality is superb. George Hill (the Ogre) reviewed them on We The Armed quite favorably. [http://wethearmed.com/index.php?PHPSESSID=d1cc8f73207c272afd15102afadf0432&]

They have had ads like this for Harleys in my area for quite some time – they term them “shelter hogs” in the ads. Nice to see the idea drift into something else unPC.

That has to be one of the creepiest Beatles’ songs ever. /shudder/

I don’t think you really want her to have “her own pole”. (Stuff like that is *so* going to get me banned…..)

As far as bestest? Not the ones I have. /sigh/ I need to go look at adopting a new one……..

The only problem I had with this video was the footage of the newschick shooting the pistol. It should have been in slow motion and from a side angle.

This video reminds me that I need to look into getting a home defense weapon. I’m in Kansas City now after living in Springfield, MO for a long time. I just didn’t think about getting a weapon down there. Now, I think it’s a requirement.

These kinds of stories make me envious.

Why, in the great country of England the only ‘offensive’ weapon I have at hand if I’m burgled in the night is mighty dragon breath…

I pity the fool.

My dad always said you should have a gun and a dog. The gun to shoot any prowler and the dog to drag them in the house in case they should fall outside instead of inside.

I’ve been shopping for a new competition pistol for my youngest…. so many choices, maybe we should get more than one.

Browning Buckmark, it’s a 22 cal. thats well built and a total blast to shoot.

I’ve found reloading a great way to not only make shooting more affordable, I’ve learned a lot about ballistics and terminal performance of ammo.

Guns are totally unnecessary in the twenty-first century. Only those who live in fear of the boogyman waste their money on such things.

cozmo on December 12, 2011 at 7:36 PM

I guess it’s a good thing I live in defiance of the boogyman, then.

You’ve raised a fine man. I applaud you, sir. I can only hope to do the same if I ever have sons.

I live in the Fresno area’s radio audience and i’ve got to admit, every time their ad comes on the radio (about 2-3 times an hour at least) it makes me happy inside…

Funniest damn ad i’ve heard in a while.
