Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on December 12, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

We’re in the last week for OOTDs this year, since we’ll start working our way through the year-end polls next Monday to determine the Obamateurism of the Year. Today, we recognize that Presidents have a lot of names to keep straight — but how hard is it to remember one of the nine Supreme Court justices? Yossi Gestetner catches this moment from Barack Obama’s celebration of Hanukkah:

Said Obama while looking around the room: “We are honored to be joined by… one of the Justice of the Supreme Court Ruth.” At this moment the President made a move with his forehead and eyes saying “ah…” and then looked down at his papers and said “Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is here.”

This of course is worse than when Texas Governor Perry who was clearly referring to a specific 8-1 ruling said “eight unelected Justices,” nor is the same as when Perry said “Not Montemayor,” knowing clearly that he does not have the correct name of Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

Well, neither one is good, but Obama wasn’t answering a question extemporaneously. He was introducing someone invited to his own event.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

The difference here is that this is a simple mistake by an Ivy Leaguer who is obviously brilliant and curious too I’m told while gaffes by Republicans are newsworthy because it demonstrates that they are not ready to be a president and are anti-intellectuals who relish the fact that they disregard science with such abandon.

Big difference.

Of course, when Perry flubs the name of a Supreme Court justice, it means he’s a dunce, but when Dear Leader does it, it’s an innocent mistake.

Just like “corpse-men” and his campaigning across all 57 states.

DRayRaven on December 12, 2011 at 8:21 AM

One has to wonder how many more “social gatherings” Obama will hold inviting the liberal justices. Perhaps the mandate is more in jeopardy than most have thought? Will Obama also become the panderer-in-chief with the Supreme Court? Forgetting Bader Ginsburg’s last name surely didn’t score any points.

Tinkering with O’s lineup card

This is from an Opinion piece in the NY Post yesterday. There were a number of topics discussed in the article, but this caught my attention. My head almost exploded!

The latest fantasy among some Democrats for saving President Obama adds a twist to the idea of having Hillary Rodham Clinton and Joe Biden switch jobs. The hurdle to that plan is that Sen. John Kerry, the party’s 2004 presidential nominee, is said to want to replace Clinton as secretary of state.

So Plan B reportedly involves an emissary urging Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who at 78 has had two bouts of cancer, to retire now. Biden would be nominated to replace her and set the game of musical chairs in motion. Once he’s confirmed, Clinton becomes vice president, instantly giving the Obama re-election ticket a boost, and Kerry goes to State.

It sounds crazy, but desperate times . . .

The horrible reality is that there will continue to be a stream of rubbish read on teleprompters by Barack Obama long after he’s kicked out of the White House in January 2013.

We will need a plan to counteract his ongoing “awesome speeches” that he can’t pronounce unless he has a script in front of him for another epoch, unfortunately.

I would think that kind of staff would be career public servants not hand pick groupies but I can’t believe they don’t produce an outline of the event and honored guests and go over tough name pronunciations such as corpsman and Justices Ginsberg.

John Traitor Kerry will.never.be Secretary of State and Joe Biden couldn’t find the door to the Supreme Court chambers if he had a map drawn on his sleeve — the idea of Biden being affirmed as a S.C. justice is like something from a SOUTH PARK script: I’d only believe it was possible if I saw it in cartoon rendition.

I could understand Hillary Clinton switching to V.P. candidate with Obama for his pitiful re-election effort, but, it’d only add fuel to the fire of the demise of any success of such a campaign. I think The First Screacher has seen her peak and it’s past.

Something not lost on me as to the latest stab in the heart of our nation by the Ridiculously Fey Duo in the White House this Christmas:

they’ve decorated the White House as the nation’s Dog House. Dog statues, dog imitations, dogs, dogs, dogs everywhere. At Christmas. During Hanekkah.

It’s not a thoughtless, random decision, that. They’re really shoveling the mud in the face of America, and especially, Judeo Christian America.

Canines are among my favored companion animals but I don’t consider the birth of Christ to be celebrated with any respect in a “Official Dog House”.

The wife gave a laughing speech to children the other day visiting the White House, err, the Dog House, who were touring the, uhh, “Christmas” decorations, to “find all the dogs”.

Lourdes on December 12, 2011 at 9:11 AM

Hanukkah isn’t until the 20th. Why is Obama out there “celebrating” the holiday now? I guess actually honoring a Jewish holiday would interfere with the family vacation (at taxpayer expense) to Hawaii. Couldn’t have that! After all the man has logged a solid 40 hours of work each week for several months now. He must be pooped!

tommy-t on December 12, 2011 at 9:14 AM

I don’t think the message is veiled.

The wife announced, “the most important member of our family, Bo” and then, laughing, smiling, told all the dutiful children to ‘go find all the dogs’ in the White House — where they’d gathered to view the nation’s Christmas decorations.

It seems that the wife and her husband have an ongoing need to present the U.S. Presidency as the most profane, wretched ‘thing’ they can. I think their entire imaging and message has been all about denigrating the U.S. Presidency, everything associated with it, the bowing, the refusal to observe protocols, insults to Allies, ghastly abuses of taste and standards, right down to the refusal to (and flaunting of) a daily work ethic that anyone else can recognize with any respect.

Well, we don’t ignore the malapropisms, forgotten names, botched facts and openly mock them for pretending Obama is so smart and that he doesn’t say dumb things. It’s even funnier when they do try to spin for him.

herm2416 on December 12, 2011 at 9:51 AM

You’ll have to pardon Barry. If it’s not HIS name being mentioned, he’s really not interested.

GarandFan on December 12, 2011 at 10:00 AM

The best I can hope for is a scandal so big that even the media won’t touch him and I can’t even think what that would be. He’s too big to fail!!!

Cindy Munford on December 12, 2011 at 9:00 AM

Unfortunately Cindy, I don’t even think a direct memo from Obama telling Holder to NOT IMPLICATE HIM in any of the Fast and Furious plot (to make U.S. gun laws stiffer), would make a dent in his armor as long as the media has his back. As for “a big scandal”, maybe Rezko, Blago, or Corzine might decide that the bus wheels are a bit heavy and come forward with something. Wishful thinking.

Rovin on December 12, 2011 at 9:35 AM

The Left, the ones responsible for Obama’s presence in the White House (media, particularly), are impervious to scandal. If what’s already been exposed as to scandals and scandalous associations regarding Obama has not deterred them, nothing will. Fast and Furious would be more than enough to prove ruin as to anyone’s character, particularly a President’s, but the Left seems to gloat on scandals, as does Obama.

Thanks for the link, hadn’t seen it, no air marshal’s and there is a big problem. I don’t get why people think that’s the least bit funny.

Bmore on December 12, 2011 at 10:01 AM

Have any of you ever heard from the news of a ROP having a panic attack on a flight? http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=46efKolCJ44

Fortunately there were Air Marshall(s) on board, but what if the ROp was a decoy to distract the AMs for cohorts to ID and neutralize before taking down the plane. Maybe the AMs need to start carrying tranquilizers

Bmore on December 12, 2011 at 10:01 AM

I don’t find that the least bit funny, either…

And I agree that it’s certainly worth considering whether or not that fellow in the video was a decoy or “distraction” … or certainly could have been (such behavior could be such, if not then, then at other times).

About Air Marshalls’s (“AMs”) carrying tranquilizers, seems there’s a whole range of potential problems that that’d deliver, especially of the medical sort (no way to know before administering one to someone whether or not they were already under the influence and thus, to induce greater harm to them with use of a tranquilizer, among other issues).

But, I agree, when someone acts that irrationally on a plane (or in other mass transit), it does pose a big problem as to overall safety for all passengers. No telling just what people that irrational will do, or will incite in others.

I think the guy on the other side (away from camera) might be an air marshall, because you don’t see stewards hovering and the haji has plasti-cuffs on with that guy restraining him.

Wow, I think they actually handled that pretty well but that would have to be the worst trip ever.

Cindy Munford on December 12, 2011 at 10:31 AM

At first, I gave zer0 some benefit of the doubt for the gaffes, errors, misponunciations, etc., and attributed them to nervousness, not to general lack of intelligence. Now I’m leaning toward the “zer0 isn’t so smart” camp because the frequency and nature of the errors don’t lessen over time.

They let him have notes?

Great point. Ever since we have had to start worrying about this kinda thing, I have tried to think about how to react to it. In this case and I want to be frank here, he gets taken down hard and quick, trust me I would have no trouble doing that. My concern is do I then get prosecuted for trying to be a good samaritan, not really a worry if the guy is ROP. ,but what if he’s not?

Bmore on December 12, 2011 at 10:56 AM

You sure that wasn’t Ruth Chris Steakhouse?

Steve Z on December 12, 2011 at 11:27 AM

C’mon. This is a minor speaking flub of no matter whatsoever.

Even the author of the piece describing the flub made his own mistake (emphasis added):

“We are honored to be joined by… one of the Justice of the Supreme Court Ruth.”

Obama clearly said “Justices,” not “Justice.” I think Yossi Gestetner’s typo, which he had a chance to review and catch, but did not, without anyone seeing him, is worse than Obama’s momentary verbal lapse.

Ira on December 12, 2011 at 11:48 AM

blah blah blah … Obama’s momentary verbal lapse.

Ira on December 12, 2011 at 11:48 AM

.
You know who was really good at luring the media into covering his “verbal” gaffes and mistakes? Dubya was. Why, he could say nook-a-lar and the media would go nuts, just reminding the whole world that President Bush was as ignorant as an Appalachian hillbilly (white only, of course!).
.
I remember the first time that he let us in on his strategery of the Bush doctrine! Wow! NYT and WaPoo almost fell apart! Strategery! How droll!
.
Yeah, times have changed since Dubya left the White House! The media is a lot more forgiving now, since it realized being hypercritical was good for neither the public perception of the president nor worldwide respect for the Office of The President of the United States. It was real fortunate that the left-driven media came to this realization just as a Democrat (and a black one, at that) became president.

I agree. Even if the tranquilzer causes medical complications, so be it. I was kinda nervous seeing the other Mid-Easterner hovering behind the AM. If it was a terror operation, the guy could have jumped the AM. Most likely the other guy was sitting next to the freaker and had to get up to allow the AM to act. But what if?

Anyhoo, didn’t meant to go OT on Oboobi’s gaffe, just that when that video ended, YouTube served several ROP videos up as being related videos – passing strange. Orrrr, if you’ve watched the new TV series “Person of Interest”, the YouTube/Google algorithm machine thingy might be trying to tell us something? ;)

AH_C on December 12, 2011 at 12:06 PM

D’oh, does it matter?

In Libs’ universe, Obama rules America, Supremes are just his underlings, why bother to remember the names?

Sir Napsalot on December 12, 2011 at 12:19 PM

So, let me get this straight. If Rick Perry gets the name of one of the Supreme Court justices wrong (or counts them wrong), it’s horrible, just horrible! But if POTUS gets it wrong – with a script in front of him, no less – it’s just another day at the office.

I hate the Left more than I can say.

And thanks again for giving me another place to vent.
