Obama: U.S. has asked Iran to return downed surveillance drone Update: Video added

posted at 2:40 pm on December 12, 2011 by Tina Korbe

According to a tweet from the Associated Press (and a spate of snarky follow-up tweets from conservative pundits), the president announced today that the United States has officially asked Iran to return a downed U.S. surveillance drone.

Iranian officials said just yesterday they have absolutely no intention to return the drone — but I’m sure it’s a different story now that the president has asked nicely for it. As S.E. Cupp tweeted, “Obama on the wayward drone: We’ve asked for it back. I for one feel good about its prompt return.” Yes, yes: No doubt the Iranians will get right on that. Meantime, they’ve already mined it for most of the data they wanted.

Not sure what the president’s line of thinking is on this. He obviously didn’t react to the news of the downed drone quickly enough to reassure anxious Americans. Making the request now just highlights his ineffectuality on this. It would appear that Rick Perry was right at the debate Saturday, when he said the president chose the worst possible response to the news that Iran had a U.S. drone in its possession. As Perry put it, “This president is the problem.”

Update: Here’s the president’s infamous call for Iranian cooperation. “We’ll see how the Iranians respond,” he says. Don’t hold your breath.

Protocol, people, Protocol. Something you wingnuts wouldn’t understand. Before you issue a strongly worded letter, you need to ask nicely first. After that you can get get a strongly worded non binding letter of condemnation from the UN. And then peace.

Stunned by the audacity of The One of having the gall to ask for his spy machine to be returned, the Iranians responded by asking if they could also pay for the shipping.

Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t our government compelled to make an official request EVEN though we know they won’t give it back? You can see on Obama’s face in the video that he doesn’t expect them to.

Word on the street (aka, paranoid blogs I follow) is that those drones do have self destruct capabilities and since the Iranians (and, Chinese) hacked it, it was disabled. However, we still (had) the capability to call an airstrick on it.

sleepingiantsup on December 12, 2011 at 4:07 PM

Reagan allowed high tech computer chips, the kind used in missile tracking, to China, so they could use it for “industrial use”.
He was skewered by the dems, raked over the coals…I remember vividly him being embarrassed, he didn’t ask for them back but probably wanted to..or so it seemed.
Than we attacked Iraq, and lo and behold every Ground to Air missile site was taken out in the first pass…seems the chips that China copied (and apparently sold), also gave out a low frequency signal, and we knew the freq.
Our military is a lot more clever than we give them credit for…let’s hope this is one of those times.

factsonlypls on December 12, 2011 at 4:11 PM

Some devices aren’t worth trying to interfere with. Weapons with a terminal homing mode essentially stop listening when they lock on to a target to prevent just such an occurrence. Patriot is such a short-ranged weapon, you’d have to “be there” to jam it. And if its a Scud that’s incoming, you’d probably want the Patriot to succeed.

“Most things” aren’t “hackable”. But don’t forget, the Taliban and Al Qaeda were watching our drone live video feeds at will. They were not, at that time, scrambled or secure. Just like watching TV.

“Yo, Abdul….move the antenna aa little to the left….that’s it!”

right2bright on December 12, 2011 at 4:17 PM

that sounds a lot like wishful thinking…but it’s better for the moral I suppose to go with that explanation rather than admitting crass incompetence…and we know it’s CIA, and not USAF, that fly these ‘covert’ missions into Iran, so I wouldn’t be surprised if it were another screw up by CIA…how on earth can you lose a top secret drone in enemy territory, and not only that, but it looks like there’s a real possibility that they indeed hacked into the drone’s controls/satellite communications and landed it themselves, possibly with help from our Chinese ‘creditors’ :-)…if this is true, it means they managed to disable its ‘self-destruct’ and ‘return to base’ mechanisms no prob….and it makes sense, if you think how many times it was reported that the Chinese hacked into the defense contractors’s networks this year alone…

jimver on December 12, 2011 at 4:36 PM

It’s possible the RQ is a fake and this was planned. Possible, but not probable.

By the way, electronic jamming of military hardware that has not crossed into sovereign territory is an act of war under Article 51. Now I believe we’ve said it did not cross Iran’s border when it was under our control. But we also said it was not hacked- so that ship has sailed.

Nice work. This is either one of the most masterful masquerade acts in military history or one more feckless action from a President who is clueless on national security issues.

Well, thank goodness this is just a drone with Top Secret technology in it. It could have been worse, it could have been embassy personnel being held by the Iranians.

Same stuff, different president’s name.

Yes, Jimmy Carter also sent a letter nicely asking the Ayatollah to give back our embassy personnel, pretty please. Before the letter, the Ayatollah was scared that he was going to face a massive US attack and was maneuvering to release the embassy hostages. After the letter, he pretty much knew that he had a string with which he could play with the US President.

Democrats, especially the communist ones, never learn.

The only reason I can think of for not destroying the drone, aside from conspiracy theories regarding Obama’s loyalties, is that he still holds out the hope that he can negotiate Iran into giving up its nuclear ambitions.

I’m certain you mean the device should self-destruct. (Not the country. Though if Odumbo wins next November…)

I was wondering about that, too. I would think that any military hardware that has a possibility of falling into enemy hands would be rigged in some way to (at least) make any reverse-engineering impossible.

Purely coincidence?

I do not think he has the intellectual gray matter to conjure up something as Machiavellian as a stray drone Trojan horse.

He just wants his two, not three minutes of time in the sunshine with cameras blazing. Never mind the occasion.

Reagan? Reagan would have kicked several butts over at the Pentagon, then called up “I’m a dinner jacket” and asked very nicely if we could have our drone back. He would have only gone on TV later if things didn’t work out to explain that “glow” on Iranian TV.
