Gingrich admits Romney would be on his short list for VP
posted at 6:50 pm on December 8, 2011 by Tina Korbe
Very magnanimous of the former Speaker, especially given Mitt Romney’s recent stepped-up attacks against him:
But why did he take the bait at all? He could just as easily have remained indifferent, have answered with a simple, “I’d have to give it thought.” He won’t win over Romney supporters — and he significantly owes his own surge to the appetite for an anti-Romney. To praise Romney as “competent” and “serious” might be true as far as it goes — but it also reminds voters that, in some ways, Romney and Gingrich are very much alike. They’re both ambitious, intelligent and susceptible to switching positions.
Too much to take away from a polite reply to a polite question? Maybe. But, while Newt has done well with his magnanimous shtick and while I wholeheartedly wish all the candidates would refrain from tearing each other down, he needn’t sing the praises of his rivals, either. Plus, I’m just really not sure what Romney would add to Gingrich’s ticket, except more ammunition for accusations of inconstancy from the DNC. At this point, that works the other way around, too: Given how deeply Gingrich’s conservative credentials have been called into question under the new scrutiny of his frontrunner status, I’m not sure he’d add much conservative reassurance to a Romney ticket, either.

I suspect you are wrong as to whether he has learned anything. What you tend to think has no logical foundation. We need a leader who is a proven and committed capitalist with proven and terrific management skills. Unfortunately, Gingrich didn’t learn the lessons of Freddie Mac until September 2008 which means that he’s not any brighter on this issue than McCain. If you can forgive Gingrich for promoting the Freddie Mac socialist housing scheme – and then lying about it – you have no standards. What treachery is next with this narcissist? He made his fortune as a lobbyist. He would be a disaster if elected. And he’s not electable. And nether is Bachmann as much as she would be a better president than Gingrich.

I agree I’d like to see more passion (I think it’s hard for him – not because he’s a wimp, but because it’s just not his nature or training to go negative). But just as important, he needs to stop the generalities and talk with far more specificity. He shouldn’t just say things like “Obama’s regulatory zeal has cost us jobs”, he should cite exactly what jobs Obama’s policies have cost us and name the companies – the coal plants which have closed, jobs lost in Gulf Coast because they ignored judges orders and endlessly stalled, medical device companies which shut down, and so forth. And he needs to be more specific about how his own business experience. How did he create jobs? What jobs did he create or lay the groundwork for so they could be created? He should also talk more about his work as a consultant – how he not only invested in new companies, and came in to turn around failing enterprises, with sound advice.
His ability to attract Indys and Dems was always going to be there whether he played to the middle or not, not because he’s a “RINO” but because he’s a very tolerant guy and is not threatening to people who are willing to vote for Republicans and are drawn to fiscal conservativism, but who are themselves social liberals and don’t want what they see as a “right wing extremist”. Social issues override fiscal issues for this group, just as some social cons put social issues first.
Make up your mind. First you say that we all know there are social liberals who are fiscal cons, and then you demand I name them. And what the hell is a “pone spouting”? And blah blah blah with the “political expediency” talking point. We’ve heard it a million times already. Try coming up with something new and different and original.

If you want a prime example of abusing a forum, look at the comments you and your ‘virtual friends’ have been making since you got your noses out of joint. Does any of this have to do with the Republican primary? Newt Gingrich? Conservatism? You seemed incapable of remaining focused on the topic at hand even before registration was opened.
You’ve got a lot of nerve inferring that new posters to this forum should act as your guests and acting as though you have any ownership over this forum. Everyone who is signed on has a right to post here and they have the right, by virtue of the admonition of the hosts of HOTAIR against trolling,to expect to be able to do that without being harassed. Obviously there was a dire need for some new posters on this site.I can understand why HOTAIR decided to open registration.

Schadenfreude,
I’m new that an example was the best way to illustrate my point.
Rudeness requires no talent and very little intellect. It requires only an innate nastiness of spirit and a willingness to indulge it. Keeping one’s darker nature in check requires restraint. Something that seems to be sadly lacking in many on this forum.
thatsafactjack on December 9, 2011 at 12:08 AM
x-blade: if you have a problem with the figures, I’d suggest that you take it up with “The Weekly Standard” since those figures were quoted in an article in that publication. As I indicated, all of those issues that I wish to hear GINGRICH discuss came from articles in various conservative publication that I read over the course of the last week. Your defense does nothing to convince me, particularly as you sited NO SOURCE for your comment. I’m interested in seeing and hearing GINGRICH discuss these issues. I did make that clear in my post. I’m neither attacking nor defending him. I do, however, wish to witness him addressing them so that I can make up my own mind about them.

I’ll extend you a very friendly ‘hand’, or an e-hand, so to write…I agree with you, on the topic of rudeness.
However, right and well intended, even darker-side restrained as you may be, your approach of telling the commenters here on “how it is or is going to be, now that you are here” is not a way to win friends or influence others, or even get others to read and contemplate what you say.
You’ll find that I suffer a lot of nonsense, much of it I disagree with. I just don’t suffer arrogance and foolishness, especially not from our side.
Also, the ‘rules’ of the forum are such that at night, when the moderators go to sleep and kind of leave the bar open, the topics are whatever the turn into.
In any event, I’m trying to say – you’re ok, they’re ok, let it be. Just get rid of Obama next year. It’s all I ask for.

Sharukkin,
My post was meant to let others know that there are questions that remain unanswered. Questions that have been posed in publications this week. If I have questions, it is likely that there are others who have the same questions. It is also likely that others may have missed some of those articles and would like to know that well regarded conservative writers are asking these questions, too, and may wish to check those publications for the information they would find in those articles. Its all part of the vetting process. As I said, I like to hear from the candidates on debates or live interviews where I can actually see them as they address the issues.I also like to read the articles relating to the candidates myself and makeup my own mind. I encourage everyone to do the same and not to apologize for thoroughly vetting the candidates. In so far as I don’t have to justify my post to you any more than you need to justify yours to me, that should hold you.
