Breaking: Police officer shot on Virginia Tech campus

posted at 1:20 pm on December 8, 2011 by Tina Korbe

One second, my Twitter feed was filled with quotes from Eric Holder at the Fast and Furious hearing. The next second, it was filled with prayers for #vatech.

According to breaking news reports, a police officer has been shot on the Virginia Tech campus.

The suspect has been described as a white male in gray sweat pants, a gray hat with neon green brim, maroon hoodie and backpack, and he is supposedly still moving about the campus. The school has suspended transit services and has warned anyone on campus to seek shelter.

As Michelle Malkin tweeted, this underscores why VT students have pushed — to no avail — for concealed carry on campus.

Update I: The parking lot in which the shooting occurred — the Coliseum Parking Lot — has been roped off and the police officer has died. His body has been covered.

Update II: A second victim was shot and killed, as well. This is truly heartbreaking. My prayers are definitely with the victims, their families and the entire VT community!

Georgia Tech students have asked for concealed carry on the sidewalks of campus but not the buildings. Some fool liberal said it could lead to more suicides or someone shooting up the place. Like it couldn’t happen anyway!!

Of course. We can’t let the sheep be able to defend themselves. They might prove a danger to killers.

It’s almost like criminals don’t obey the law or something….

VT all over again.

Free fire zones. God bless the officer and let’s hope the shooter doesn’t take anyone else down.

We need stricter laws! /sarcasm off

More grist for the anti-2nd Ammendment clowns (Hank Johnson and Sheila Jackson, that’s you) on the pro-Holder side of the House Judiciary Committe. Look for them to work it into the hearing today.

EternalMalachi on December 8, 2011 at 1:30 PM

The bad guys already have concealed carry, and they don’t need no stinkin’ permits either.

The good guys obey the law and don’t carry illegally because of the big potential downside – loss of freedom, criminal record, etc.

The bad guys? Not so much.

What the hell? Doesn’t this guy know there’s no guns on campus? He’s breaking the rules!

What a tragedy. My prayers go out for the fallen officer. I hope this perpetrator is caught–and caught quickly.

Traffic stops, like domestic violence calls, are among the most dangerous calls police officers have to respond to. They’re dangerous primarily because they’re unpredictable. (This is also why cops grab their tasers at the first sign of trouble.)

gun control is a political wedge issue used to great effect by conservatives for decades, as you know very well. bringing it up at the first opportunity in order to apportion some blame for the tragedy to those who favor stricter gun laws is just another example of malkin’s odiousness.

It’s kinda nuts. I’m sealed in my apt (about 2 miles north main street from campus) and don’t really want to go anywhere to bother the police.

I have a CCP (but had to pawn my firearm) and really wish we could carry on campus. The officer who was shot was hit near Cassel Coliseum on Washington Street. I will provide a link to a map.

SgtSVJones on December 8, 2011 at 2:07 PM

Statement from Virginia Tech: Shortly after noon today, a Virginia Tech police officer stopped a vehicle on campus during a routine traffic stop in the Coliseum parking lot near McComas Hall.

During the traffic stop, the officer was shot and killed. There were witnesses to this shooting.

Witnesses reported to police the shooter fled on foot heading toward the Cage, a parking lot near Duck Pond Drive. At that parking lot, a second person was found. That person is also deceased.

Several law enforcement agencies have responded to assist. Virginia State Police has been requested to take lead in the investigation

The status of the shooter is unknown. The campus community should continue to shelter in place and visitors should not come to campus.

For some reason, gunman seem to avoid areas where they think guns might be pointed back at them. They like to think they are playing their game in ‘god-mode’ and can kill anything that moves. The idea that some civilian could end their party isn’t very appealing to them. There are more calculations involved then you care to admit.

The last shooting at this school didn’t end until the kid heard someone with a gun outside of the building, but that’s all it took, just the sound of another gun and the coward took his own life rather than continue to shoot at unarmed students and teachers.

What you’re describing has never happened even in areas with a large number of weapons, because it doesn’t even take someone else’s bullet to stop cowards like this.

No, this isn’t Obama’s fault, but you’re the one who’s living in some fantasy world where all guns are just like the Matrix, and everyone who owns one will just fire blindly, spraying bullets everywhere.
