Video: US approved large escalation of legal gun sales to Mexico

posted at 12:20 pm on December 6, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

Remember when gun-control activists insisted that loose purchasing regulation of American firearms had led to a massive uptick in arming the drug cartels in Mexico?  Advocates demanded action to curtail gun sales in the US, and the Obama administration responded with new efforts at the ATF and Department of Justice — including Operation Fast and Furious.  Now it seems that the big spike in arms supply to cartels didn’t come from local gun shops at all, but from the US government approving a rapid increase in direct sales from manufacturers to the Mexican government, whose purchases got diverted to the cartels — a fact known to the Obama administration all along.  Sharyl Atkisson continues her excellent investigative reporting for CBS on OF&F with this exposé:

Selling weapons to Mexico – where cartel violence is out of control – is controversial because so many guns fall into the wrong hands due to incompetence and corruption. The Mexican military recently reported nearly 9,000 police weapons “missing.”

Yet the U.S. has approved the sale of more guns to Mexico in recent years than ever before through a program called “direct commercial sales.” It’s a program that some say is worse than the highly-criticized “Fast and Furious” gunrunning scandal, where U.S. agents allowed thousands of weapons to pass from the U.S. to Mexican drug cartels. …

Here’s how it works: A foreign government fills out an application to buy weapons from private gun manufacturers in the U.S. Then the State Department decides whether to approve.

And it did approve 2,476 guns to be sold to Mexico in 2006. In 2009, that number was up nearly 10 times, to 18,709. The State Department has since stopped disclosing numbers of guns it approves, and wouldn’t give CBS News figures for 2010 or 2011. …

The State Department audits only a tiny sample – less than 1 percent of sales – but the results are disturbing: In 2009, more than a quarter (26 percent) of the guns sold to the region that includes Mexico were “diverted” into the wrong hands, or had other “unfavorable” results.

Well, well, well.  This puts OF&F in a completely different light, doesn’t it?  While the ATF allowed two thousand or so guns to “walk” across the border without the ability to track them, the Obama administration was already aware that the direct-sales program had a 26% fail rate — which would have meant almost 4,900 weapons fell into the hands of the cartels based on sales approved by the Obama administration’s State Department in 2009 alone.  That’s more than twice the amount “lost” by the ATF and DoJ in OF&F. And we don’t know how much worse the problem got last year or this year, thanks to the stonewalling of the Obama administration on the  numbers.

This makes OF&F look like a dodge by the Obama administration to support tougher gun laws at home while hiding the actual source of the gun diversions — which is, as it always has been, the Mexican army and police forces that defect to the cartels and take their guns with them when they do.

Throw Obama and his co-miscreants out of office ASAP.

You know…Who really cares anymore?

Nothing is going to come of this before the election.
GOP candidates have no desire to even talk about it on the trail or in debates.
Only CBS talks about it.
It’s just not a national issue nor will it ever be one.

Obama will skate on F&F…hard truth

Fast & furious lies
Justice Dept. must come clean
http://www.nypost.com/p/news/opinion/opedcolumnists/fast_furious_lies_0EAFsSpd9y1RaeAxikkGUN

Again — why? Perhaps the point was to put the onus for the Mexican drug violence on the American “gun lobby.” The newly released e-mails show Dennis Burke, the since-fired US attorney in Arizona who supervised the operation, furiously pushing back against Grassley and his staff, calling them “willing stooges for the Gun Lobby.”

Meanwhile, Holder spins that F&F was merely a continuation of the Bush-era Operation Wide Receiver, which also lost a few weapons. The difference is that Wide Receiver’s mistakes were inadvertent: That gun-tracking program was under tight surveillance and — unlike F&F — was a joint venture between the US and Mexican authorities.

It’s time for the months of lies to end — but don’t hold your breath. The administration recently sealed the court records relating to agent Terry’s murder and — a year later — the one man arrested hasn’t been tried.

So our Noted Constitutional Scholar President has decided that the Second Amendment means that the right of Mexicans to keep and bear our guns against us shall not be infringed?

Mr. Bingley on December 6, 2011 at 12:29 PM

Oh yea, see, this is that UN program to control international small arms sales that appears in the news media from time to time.

So the Obama administration is an international arms trafficker? Who knew?

Not only is the Obama administration moving large amounts of drug money, but we’re selling arms to the drug cartels. What’s not to like? It’s JOBs man! Just think how high the unemployment rate would be if Obama wasn’t doing this?

DOJ cover-up of Fast and Furious coming apart at the seams
http://www.coachisright.com/doj-cover-up-of-fast-and-furious-coming-apart-at-the-seams/

The Department of Justice cover up of Operation Fast and Furious, begun literally hours after the December, 2010 shooting death of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry, is coming apart at the seams. In yet another Friday evening document dump, the Obama Administration provided Congress and an increasingly interested American public “…documents detailing how the [DOJ] gave inaccurate information to a US senator in the controversy surrounding Operation Fast and Furious.”

In short, after spending months in all out deny and obfuscate mode, stonewalling congressional investigators and depending upon nearly universal media silence to make the issue go away, the AG Eric Holder-led Department of Justice has begun to offer up damning, self-incriminating information to its principle antagonists—Senator Charles Grassley and Representative Darrell Issa. And that means just one thing—Holder and the DOJ no longer have a choice!

Colbyjack on December 6, 2011 at 12:29 PM

Against the drug cartels, we just don’t know how to play the game! We have some first class idiots (DOJ, ATF, State Department, DHS – ad infinitum) dreaming up ways to track guns, track cash, etc. and being entirely outwitted by the cartels. Border security would have put a big dent in it but losing the Hispanic vote trumped that! We look the biggest suckers and losers ever! The war on drugs has been a complete joke. An we have some here in the good ol’ USA buying the drugs — and that is 100% percent of the problem!

Bob in VA on December 6, 2011 at 12:30 PM

Well, well, well indeed! Great work Sharyl, keep safe girl! How will holder explain this? Will he lie again? I hope Issa and Grassley has this information! bho, team, and yes holder are crooked as a snake!

So when obama said “we’ll bring a gun” he meant it literally?

the_nile on December 6, 2011 at 12:35 PM

So this is why we never learned about any coordination between the State Department (Hillary Clinton) and Mexican officials on OF&F. The Dept. of State was already hip deep in another failed gun running program twice as bad as OF&F. I think we should be looking into what Clinton knew and when she knew it as well as Holder.

Heh, did you know that Mexico has strict gun control – their version of the Second Amendment has tight controls on who can have a gun.

I wonder how that’s working out for them?

We have a completely corrupt government. No body is going to go to jail,,,,endless hearings and hand slaps if anything. All kabuke theater. What is going on in this country,,what is happening to this country makes me puke. All these so called civil servants have no core principles or values except how to stay in power and get line their pockets. Even our military is being severely compromised at all levels. Check out militarycorruption.com. The Founding Fathers are crying in their graves.

JohnGalt23 on December 6, 2011 at 12:38 PM

This looks like a whole lotta winking and nodding going on here- the Obama Administration arms both sides of the battle with US weapons. Wide Receiver, on the other hand, tracked the weapons as a way of both identifying the cartels and illegal sellers in the US.

Pure and simple, our president is creating a crisis that didn’t exist in an effort to force legislation of an ideological nature.

Once again “news” is not “news” until the MSM declares it to be so.

This information has been out there, and noted on the same blogs that have repeatedly first reported on F&F. Some of us have made reference to the problem on these very pages.

I would also remind folks that these weapons are military grade, and the rifles are select-fire. That means machine guns, fully automatic or burst-fire capable M-16 derivatives, vastly superior as weapons to the semi-auto AKS civilian versions of the AK-47.

retiredeagle on December 6, 2011 at 12:58 PM

How can this not be that Obama and Hillary and the gun control Dems wanted Mexico to spin out of control so that they could clamp down on gun sales in the US?

They had to know that with our porous border that those weapons are coming across and are on our streets. I wonder if our police departments are tracking the serial numbers or if they have been told not to do so?

Just softening up the public for the UN Small Arms Treaty.

Forbes.com: U.N. Agreement Should Have All Gun Owners Up In Arms

It may not come as surprising news to many of you that the United Nations doesn’t approve of our Second Amendment. Not one bit. And they very much hope to do something about it with help from some powerful American friends. Under the guise of a proposed global “Small Arms Treaty” premised to fight “terrorism”, “insurgency” and “international crime syndicates” you can be quite certain that an even more insidious threat is being targeted – our Constitutional right for law-abiding citizens to own and bear arms.

What, exactly, does the intended agreement entail?

While the terms have yet to be made public, if passed by the U.N. and ratified by our Senate, it will almost certainly force the U.S. to:

1. Enact tougher licensing requirements, creating additional bureaucratic red tape for legal firearms ownership.
2. Confiscate and destroy all “unauthorized” civilian firearms (exempting those owned by our government of course).
3. Ban the trade, sale and private ownership of all semi-automatic weapons (any that have magazines even though they still operate in the same one trigger pull – one single “bang” manner as revolvers, a simple fact the ant-gun media never seem to grasp).
4. Create an international gun registry, clearly setting the stage for full-scale gun confiscation.
5. In short, overriding our national sovereignty, and in the process, providing license for the federal government to assert preemptive powers over state regulatory powers guaranteed by the Tenth Amendment in addition to our Second Amendment rights.

Worth repeating – The Fast and Furious attack on gun ownership is exhibit A in the case of the Socialist National Media being the virtual propaganda arm of the DNC.

The big problem for the media is that despite their censorship efforts, word of this is leaking out and they are having to be dragged kicking and screaming into covering it.

After all, it’ll really look bad for them when Obama is impeached and they haven’t covered why it happened.

“The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has acknowledged an Indiana dealer’s cooperation in conducting straw purchases at the direction of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Exclusive documents obtained by Gun Rights Examiner show the dealer cooperated with ATF by selling guns to straw purchasers, and that bureau management later asserted these guns were being traced to crimes.”

And where else…? Eventually someone’s gonna sing to save his own scalp, and it won’t be a pretty song.

Selling so many guns like that to the Mexican drug cartels was essentially an act of war against Mexico. And we are supposed to believe Holder and Obama were never apprised of this activity?

Obviously it was Obama’s idea which is why so many top administrators involved were either given promotions or transfers – not fired – and the whistle blowers were punished.

Obama should be impeached on this criminal fiasco alone if the democrats in congress had any decency – decency? Ha!
