Video: Newt’s first TV spot in Iowa

posted at 9:50 am on December 5, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

Newt Gingrich begins his home-stretch campaign in the nation’s first caucus state today with a new 60-second spot for Iowa television — the kind of warm, positive commercial that candidates usually use as their first introduction to voters. According to the Des Moines Register, Team Gingrich will spend $250,000 on this spot in Iowa statewide in an attempt to bolster Gingrich’s already-impressive numbers — and probably to avoid the kind of collapse that plagued the other boomlet candidates in this race:

Iowa frontrunner Newt Gingrich’s first TV advertisement will begin airing in Iowa on Monday – and it’s just the beginning of a series of ads that will run before the Iowa caucuses, his spokesman said tonight.

The Gingrich campaign is spending $250,000 for the statewide ad buy on cable and network television stations. …

In the ad, Gingrich says: “Some people say the America we know and love is a thing of the past. I don’t believe that. Because working together, I know we can rebuild America. We can revive our economy and create jobs, shrink government and the regulations that strangle our businesses.”

The ad is called: “Is The America We Love A Thing Of the Past? Newt Says No.”

The introductory nature of the ad is rather interesting, considering that Gingrich has always been one of the most well-known of the presidential hopefuls this cycle.  This is, though, Newt 2.0 — not the consummate Beltway insider who engineered the first GOP Congressional majority in 40 years and who forced a Democratic President to accept welfare reform and reductions in spending, and not the man whose leadership fizzled out shortly thereafter and whose “revolution” got derailed later by “compassionate conservatism” and big-spending Republicans.  Gingrich’s entire campaign has been a reboot, in which he has successfully presented himself as the glue that binds together Republicans while focusing attacks on Barack Obama and the national media.

The ad itself is well-produced, and captures some of that elusive Reaganian “Morning in America” quality, very obviously the intent of his campaign team.  The music choice is also interesting.  Perhaps I’m the only Notre Dame fan that will notice this, but the ad uses one of the gentle passages from the theme to Rudy, a film that celebrated a triumph of will over seemingly insurmountable obstacles on the way to allowing Daniel “Rudy” Reuttiger to take the field for two plays for the Fighting Irish football team.  This theme gets borrowed often by many people for their background music (including early trailers, occasionally, for other films), but it seems perhaps fitting for Gingrich’s team at this point in time.

Sorta miss the reason we need to rebuild America -the centralized government that ignores the constitution, thwarts our freedoms, buys special interest groups votes with our taxes – gives us mandates – propagandizes our children, steal our businesses and refuses to face our transparent enemy as what it is.

Good ad nonetheless.

A turd sandwich dressed up in any form is still a turd sandwich.

I am seriously going to enjoy next year, should Newt become the nominee, when conservatives awake to the monster they’ve created.

Newt will be a godsend to Obama – the epitome of the DC corrupt culture masquerading as a Washington “outsider”? Heh.

Contrast the angry white old man with the charismatic half-black young man.

Some say Newt will own Obama in the debates. Maybe for you political junkies. The media will see otherwise and will devote pages and pages to how Obama won every debate. All he needs to do is show up and wink.

Ha. O/T, but that reminds me of this. My apologies if anyone has already seen this, but if not you may find it funny (I’ve heard it a few places, so I’m not sure who to give credit to):

To My Liberal Friends:
Please accept with no obligation, implied or explicit, my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low-stress, non-addictive, gender-neutral celebration of the winter solstice holiday, practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, or secular practices of your choice, with respect for the religious/secular persuasion and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all. I also wish you a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2011 but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make America great. Not to imply that America is necessarily greater than any other country nor the only America in the Western Hemisphere . Also, this wish is made without regard to the race, creed, color, age, physical ability, religious faith or sexual preference of the wishes.

I can’t see the ad at work(damn Youtube!), but as a film score buff, I would’ve spotted that one in no time. One of Goldsmith’s best efforts of the 90′s. In fact, Palin came out to that music when McCain introduced her as his VP pick, and she continued to use it afterwards at rallies and speeches.

Doughboy on December 5, 2011 at 10:27 AM

It would take more than a great Ad for me to forget all that Newt has done. It would take a massive blow to the head from a large heavy blunt object. Once I had a nice case of total amnesia, I could vote for him.

In the meantime. I’d rather slam my hand in a car door for an hour or two. Newt is the final nail in the coffin that is the Republican Party of late.

Snake307 on December 5, 2011 at 10:32 AM

Fast forward to June 2012:

The media is trumpeting stories of an economy that is beginning to rebound – never mind the internals and whether it is really true or not. Think it won’t happen? See how they greeted news of unemployment falling to 8.6%?

The GOP has nominated either Romney or Gingrich.

- Romney will be painted as a candidate without a core flip-flopping with the wind. He is also the face of Wall Street greed, which led to the economic collapse – a fable the media will continually trumpet as fact.

- Gingrich will be the face of the broken and corrupt culture in DC. Obama will run against Congress and Gingrich will be painted as the Beltway insider, who will be so partisan and divisive that he will only damage the fragile and recovering economy. Any attacks Gingrich launches against Obama will feed into the meme that he is a bitter and divisive leader.

Many think debates will define the general election as they have defined the GOP primaries – something that was planned by Romney/GOP Establishment as a means of highlighting Perry’s weakness.

I beg to differ.

TheRightMan on December 5, 2011 at 10:34 AM

I’d like to know what’s NOT to like in this add…

We have ONE SHOT at saving this nation.

I truly believe that, and a man who KNOWS how to work the legislature is vital. I’ll vote for Newt without 2nd thoughts. Perry as well. Though I don’t think he’s ready for the big leagues, he’s a good man and on OUR side.

Newt HAS to pick a good VP and let it be known who it would be.

Mitt should go into business or retire. IF he is forced on me I will have to vote for him and PRAY, but I don’t trust him.

Kind of lame. But that will not prevent me from voting for the man. He is a man of history, and I am sure he knows the America I love will never be again, but an America we can once again love that way again can be. I certainly love America today, but I do not love it in the way I did 20 or 30 years ago. It like a car you were handed down from your grandfather, that was in great shape, although it had a few issues that kept it from being perfect. In the time you have owned it though, people have dinged the doors, bumped the bumpers, and smoked inside of it. You yourself have driven it hard, not replaced the oil as often as you should have, maybe not replaced the tires. You still love that car, but in a different way, more of a mourning way, are you going to send it to the junk pile and buy a different car, hoping it can give you that old love feeling again or are you going to take it to the shop and have the engine rebuilt, the exterior repainted and the interior reupulstered so it is much more like it was when your grandfather owned it?

sandee on December 5, 2011 at 10:42 AM

So far the entire primary has gone along one of two mutually exclusive paths:

a) [Insert candidate name here] is too conservative to win, inexperienced and terribly naive about how national elections are won.

b) [insert candidate name here] has no principles and his/her long experience in government is proof of corruption.

As long as we do this to our political candidates, we will have terrible candidates.

I think he did it to himself. If he had run as a conservative the way he did in 2008 I think he would have it sewn up. Trying to copy the McCain playbook in hopes of winning the nomination the way McCain did hasn’t done him any favors with the base. You can’t run a general campaign in the primary unless your conservative bona fides are beyond reproach which his aren’t.

That said, I’ll still gladly support him if he gets the nod.

Kataklysmic on December 5, 2011 at 11:10 AM

Newt Gingrich is right it’s going to take everyone together. For instance in California a teacher is threatening children’s grades if they say God Bless You.

How is he still employed, and being paid with tax payer money?

For some reason these people are allowed into public sector jobs, and they feel they have the right to impose their point of view on our children. It’s why we have Fall, Winter and Spring Festivals at Public Schools in a country that is 90% Christian why don’t we have Halloween, Christmas “federal holiday” and Easter parties in our public schools anymore? Tradition is the glue that holds societies together. The United States is a Christian country how about we have a renaissance in our public school system and go back to our standards.

The public sector needs to be cleaned out it needs a scouring. We have lefties setting their agendas and everyone who pays them out of their pockets “Tax Payers” humoring and indulging them. Glenn Beck was right we surround them.

We are not ever going to get back the America we know and love, until those people with a secular leftist agenda have been flushed out of public sector positions. If they want to stay they better keep their f’n point of view and opinions to themselves. Unemployment is high in this country, there is no reason not to replace people like the one above who is punishing Children’s speech using their grades as a club. I would hope that the Principal and the School Board Superintendent and the School Board are all getting an earful over this bully’s tactics in the Public Class room. Why would this intolerant bullying behavior toward our children be tolerated in America EVER?

I hope Newt’s got a plan, because words aren’t going to be enough.

I will undo the damage done to businesses and farmers by the EPA and Departments of Interior and Agriculture. I will put free back into free market economy, encouraging all that want to compete in an open and honest marketplace, while severely punishing those who act unfairly or illegally.

I am excited to see the what you in Iowa do when the weight of government is removed from your backs and free enterprise is free again. The days of government owned are over.

Indeed it is not. It showed the pettiness and jealousies of a number of lesser men, including our current Speaker, Boehner. They threw 84 accusations at him and got only one to stick and that was about a college course he taught. The IRS later found nothing wrong with that 84th accusation.

Kataklysmic on December 5, 2011 at 12:23 PM

Knowing what I know about Gingrich, the background theme should be more Bow Chicka Bow Bow , less Morning In America, I think.

I can’t believe conservative Republicans are embracing this guy. Putting aside his execrable personal life and the lack of character it represents, his iconoclastic, all-over-the-map political ideology can’t by any measure be considered conservative. And if you thought the parade of women coming forward on national television to speak out against Herman Cain was embarrassing to Republicans everywhere, just wait. Cain has nothing on Gingrich when it comes to moral lapses, lack of impulse control, or clouded judgement.

troyriser_gopftw on December 5, 2011 at 12:30 PM

There are considerations for selecting a president far more important that debate skills alone. We should look for the nominee that has shown the best judgment, not the worst.

FloatingRock on December 5, 2011 at 12:37 PM

The last time Ron Paul ran for President he predicted what was about to happen to the economy just a few months later, and the other establishment candidates all scoffed at him, and they still do even after they were proven wrong.

Then there’s Bachmann, which is not in the same category, who understood the factors underlying the Arab Spring and made the right call on Libya, unlike Newt. McCain got it wrong too, who shamefully allied himself with Al Qaeda and other Islamists. I’d bet Romney fell for it too, but of course he remained silent about most things over the past number of years, while Bachmann and Paul where trying to take measures to improve our lot.

FloatingRock on December 5, 2011 at 12:45 PM

Bachman was asked how, logistically, she would deport 11 million people….she had no idea how to answer the question

Ron Paul….really, have you heard him speak, to say he is ignorant would be increasing his credibility….he is dumb as a rock, he is Mr. Platitude with no means of getting anything done

Romney is the Crony Capitalist king, which if he were the Repub nominee, Axelrod would be sure to let America know about in spades..all the layoffs, looting companies equity…no way

Santorum, who I like before he ran for pres, has turned out to be so far in left field when it comes to big government control of personal liberties I don’t see how any true conservative could support him

Bachman was asked how, logistically, she would deport 11 million people….she had no idea how to answer the question

georgealbert on December 5, 2011 at 12:52 PM

There doesn’t really need to be an answer to that question because most of them will self deport. Not much would change, we wouldn’t have to bust down doors and frog march people like all the fear mongers say, you just enforce the laws on the books, which will be easier and more effective once most of them have self deported when the magnets have been turned off.

Bachman was asked how, logistically, she would deport 11 million people….

Answer: One at a time. The same way we prosecute all other crimes.

You say it will take a great deal of manpower? Put 50% of the TSA and DHS employees to work on it. Maybe some of them will “self-layoff” as a result. win-win.

You say it will take too long? Better get started now, then.

Love it!

More detailed way of saying “Government isn’t the solution to the problem, Government IS the problem.”

What other candidates can stir the same emotions that Newt does in this ad? I think Perry can. I’m not sure about Romney… he’s missing something in his delivery and I think he’d be doing much better if he could improve in that way.

We don’t need ‘ad emotions’, we need a president with sound principles and judgment.

FloatingRock on December 5, 2011 at 2:25 PM

Agreed, but if you are to be a leader, people have to want to follow you. That begins in the heart.

sleepingiantsup on December 5, 2011 at 2:32 PM

The most convincing ‘ad emotions’ aren’t from the heart, they’re an art.

Man, have you ever tried Zantac for that indigestion you always seem to have? Good God, you make me tired with your constant vitriol, harranging and wringing of hands…Take a deep breath, sit it out for just once, and stop acting so desparate. Good grief…

lovingmyUSA on December 6, 2011 at 2:46 AM

For those that don’t remember the Gingrich years, I suggest you read why he was ousted by his own party.

TxAnn56 on December 5, 2011 at 10:49 AM

I was there, and you ARE talking about the “party” right? Like we should worry that someone didnt get along with “the party”? Do you remember what “that party” became….right?

Yep, nice touch for us Iowans…

Sorta miss the reason we need to rebuild America -the centralized government that ignores the constitution, thwarts our freedoms, buys special interest groups votes with our taxes – gives us mandates – propagandizes our children, steal our businesses and refuses to face our transparent enemy as what it is.

Good ad nonetheless.

Don L on December 5, 2011 at 10:06 AM

I don’t think he missed it. The ugliness of “what is” is abundantly clear to most. This message is about “what can be again”. I like that he focused on that. If he gets the nomination, there will lots of opportunity to pinpoint every major failure, misstep, stumble and idiocy of the Obama regime.
