Gallup: Obama’s job approval the lowest at this point for any modern president except … Carter
posted at 8:00 pm on December 2, 2011 by Allahpundit
In all seriousness, it’s amazing that his numbers are as high as they are. Never in my experience has the country seemed so close to catastrophe in so many ways. Europe could implode in weeks and sink the world into depression; Congress can’t muster the will to slow the growth of debt that’s already soared past $15 trillion and triggered one downgrade; Iran’s seemingly at a point of no return on nuclear weapons; Syria’s ready to explode all over the Middle East; the Arab Spring is turning into the best thing that ever happened to Muslim fundamentalists; and Pakistan is more Pakistan-ish than ever. (I haven’t even mentioned protracted gruesome unemployment.) Not all of it is Obama’s fault, but you know how it is with the presidency: If it happened on your watch, you pay the price politically. That Mayan 2012 prophesy is looking better every day, yet somehow The One’s polls are still just two or three good news cycles away from being above water. Remarkable. If China invaded Hawaii tomorrow, maybe he’d drop to 40 percent.

That Carter spike between November and December looks odd but it’s easily explained: His numbers briefly surged on a tide of patriotism after the Iran embassy takeover before disintegrating the following year. Anyway, I’m trying to imagine a scenario in which America’s position actually looks better 11 months from now instead of worse and … it’s not easy. Maybe the eurozone holds together for the time being and the PIIGS muddle through with austerity measures, but austerity hasn’t solved Greece’s problems and the continent already seems headed for a new recession. Maybe the sabotage program inside Iran will manage to slow their bomb research, but no one thinks it’ll stop them; they’ll advance, just at a more plodding pace. And there’s no realistic chance of rolling back the Islamist tide in northern Africa or, if Assad falls, in Syria, at least in the near term. The only hope for positive change is, of course, a genuine U.S. economic recovery, which becomes less likely as Europe’s economy shrinks, and the possibility that having U.S. troops out of Afghanistan will stabilize Pakistan a bit by reassuring them of their influence over that country. Although even that’s dodgy: Do we want a “more stable” Pakistan? Would a more stable Pakistan be more or less likely to engage in provocations against India?
Exit question: How successful would President Romney or President Gingrich be in reversing any of this? Kickstarting economic growth would be a huge accomplishment, tantamount to deflecting one killer asteroid while it’s still in Earth’s outer orbit. What about the other 20 or so headed our way? Pessimism fee-vah.

Would they have to reverse it? Couldn’t they just blame Obama for doing all the wrong things after blaming Bush for four years?

“In all seriousness, it’s amazing that his numbers are as high as they are.” /// That percentage that still likes him is unfortunatley the (now) gigantic segment of the poulation that is dependent on govt (the “takers”). He won’t sink any lower because its next to impossible to expect these takers to vote against their own self interest. They just won’t. His poll ratings will not sink any lower.

Ben Stein predicted to Cavuto today that he would be easily re-elected because he’s such a talented campaigner and will have megabucks to work with. I had to change the channel – it was so unbearably depressing to listen to.

Repealing Obamacare will jumpstart economic growth. But if Europe collapses before then, its not really going to matter…

Worst case of secret buyer’s remorse ever. That’s why the guy isn’t in the 20s instead. Bunch of people who will die rather than to admit they blew it big time by voting for him. Why, it would be downright racist to criticize him now!

They will wave their hands, say ‘tax cuts’ and ignore the fact that large portions of the federal government must go away and that the American people have to be weaned off of ‘entitlements’ in a very short period of time if we are to have any hope of surviving as a Nation.
And when I say ‘large portions’ there is only what is in the Constitution REMAINING… all of the rest goes save that entitlements get a draw down, block grant out to the States and then final cut-off about 5 years down the road.
Then a tax cut.
That would reverse a large portion of this.
In other words – by voting for a ‘status quo’ big government Republican there will be no stopping this until we crater. And then things get very, very messy. And I bet neither of those fine fellows will campaign on ‘there are hard times ahead, stock up on water, food, guns and ammo’, either, because such harsh medicine just can’t be said openly since it isn’t PC to say how bad our government is. And, yeah, neither of them will do any of that as it is all about party, and who cares about the Nation?

It doesn’t matter- with one federal agency after another skewing every measurable datapoint in his favor and the media playing them up as though they’re tangible and foretelling, his numbers are bound to go way up in the next 12 months.

Exit question: How successful would President Romney or President Gingrich be in reversing any of this?
Not very. None of this is within the dictates of a president, or even the control of the US. A president can’t dictate his party, his party can’t dictate the country, and the country can’t dictate what happens in the world.
In a way it’s better that everything goes into the toilet under democrat leadership. It puts the stain on them in the history books just as Carter and his ilk were maligned for everything that went wrong between 77-80. If that’s any consolation. Had Reagan been in power then, Three Mile Island, the Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan, and Hervé Villechaize would have happened anyway.

Not so amazing when you realize that he has a built-in base of support from a certain diversity group that votes at least 90% democrat and even more so when it is a black candidate.
Take that component out and he realistically is around 25 to 30%

I understand that people can be photographed under bad circumstances and that it might not reflect their usual persona.
In the case of the photo you run on Obama it so shows just what a nasty, petty, wannabe dictator he is. As much as I disliked LBJ, Carter, and Clinton I never felt actual hatred and fear that I feel with Obama.

Too much spiking the ball on the 5 yardline.
The GOP either wins big (54% PV ) or they lose.
And I don’t see a landslide in the making for ANY of the present candidates.

I imagine the Obama’s annual boondoggle to Hawaii will improve his poll numbers. Nothing like the entitled First Family spending 3 weeks in a posh, 1%-ish vacation pad while the rest of the country suffers through snow storms, exchanging Dollar Store bargains as gifts, and eating SPAM for Christmas dinner. Hope! Change!

Someone help me out with the meaning of 99 Red Balloons.
Was the band claiming that Germany (with US help) shouldn’t be defending itself from the Soviets because it was possible that Germany would initiate attacks against the Soviet Union because it could somehow mistake 99 helium balloons, traveling at the speed of the wind, for a jet aircraft or missile attack??

angryed: “78% approval for Eisenhower 3 years into his term. Wow. That’s something we will probably never see again.”
We will definitely never see that again. It’s impossible because the demographics have changed.
Demographics provide Obama with a very high floor of support, which he is already at. It’s not just the slowly growing portion of the population that would be in line for lifetime free everything as reparations for slavery; it’s also that other, larger and rapidly growing demographic that Obama urged to “punish” its “enemies”. (Jeremiah Wright used to preach all the time about these enemies, God damn them, and Barack Obama attended that church for years and never heard an unacceptable message from the pulpit.)
Just as this kind of block voting provides Barack Obama with a high floor of support, it would a impose a low ceiling of approval on a leader like Dwight Eisenhower.
The idea of a very competent leader who has wide approval because he tries to stand for everybody and is accepted by nearly everybody as “our kind of guy” is no good any more. Standing for “everybody” means standing for nothing.
The country is deeply divided, and getting more so all the time.

All it will take is the economy to tick up a bit and his ratings will zoom up.
But then just announcing he is taking a 17 Christmas vacation in Hawaii does not help…
albill on December 3, 2011 at 8:41 AM
Yep. No way that Obama could win except that we are dealing with the current Republican party and they have a recent pattern of being able to screw up just about anything. They certainly did the last presidential election. I have seen no proof at all that they are going to run on any platform other than the “Obama sucks”.
With the exception of a couple of the crazies that are running, I don’t believe any of the more serious contenders would do anything to get us back on track after taking the WH.
We’re doooooooooooomed, we’re all DOOOOOOOOOOOMED.
Just kidding, but I’m still stocking up on gold, canned goods and ammo. Just in case.
