Cain to make major announcement about campaign tomorrow
posted at 4:47 pm on December 2, 2011 by Allahpundit
No word yet on what the announcement will be, but he’s down to 0.5 percent on InTrade as I write this. To put that in perspective, Trump’s at 0.4 percent.
Look on the bright side: With him and Huckabee back to back, Fox News’s new Saturday night line-up will be dynamite.
One supporter who has been summoned to the private session said he believes that Cain is likely to announce he is ending his candidacy.
Another who has been invited to the morning meeting says attendees have been told he has made no decision, but wanted to meet with some of the supporters to express his gratitude.
Several sources indicated that Cain is likely to announce his plans publicly at a news conference after the meeting. Cain had already scheduled an event on Saturday — the grand opening of his national headquarters in his hometown of Atlanta, as well as the announcement of his campaign’s freshly minted senior leadership team for the state of Georgia.
Newsweek published a gossipy piece this morning claiming that Cain’s wife wants him out of the race. I sent the article to a friend who used to work for him and she scoffed at the whole thing, especially the sketchiness of the sourcing. Could be, of course, that the piece is nonsense but that Cain’s getting out anyway just because the cost/benefit calculus of staying in has shifted so dramatically. I imagine that’d be an awfully wrenching decision, though, for a guy whose can-do attitude has brought him so much success. He’s a millionaire, a former CEO, and the owner of a high enough self-regard that he’s prone to referring to himself in the third person. (His Twitter handle is “THEHermanCain,” for cripes sake.) Not the type of personality who’s prone to quit and slink off under suspicion, even if defeat is inevitable. But we’ll see.
Exit question: If he’s on his way out, what’s with the brand new “Women for Cain” section on his website?

I predict the big announcement will be an accusation against someone for giving those women money to come forth, and that he will stay in the race.

Static21 on December 2, 2011 at 4:55 PM
Cain’s problems aren’t women, they are lack of any deep knowledge on anything but 999. He’s lost on foreign policy. That’s scary.
kerrhome on December 2, 2011 at 4:55 PM
The man is unqualified for the job of President and revels in his ignorance of foreign policy. It’s not these women that have killed his campaign – it’s a guy named Herman Cain (okay, well – and Mark Block) who did it.
They have no one but themselves to blame.
HondaV65 on December 2, 2011 at 4:55 PM
Exactly! It’s all this stuff “twirlin’ around” in his head that’s killing his campaign.
But … look at it this way. Cain never thought he go as far as he did – he was only in this to sell books.
Mission Accomplished.

Herman Cain loves Numerology.
Tomorrow is 12-3.

Did I just blow your mind?

I think he is out. He will make a speech, stating his innocence with Gloria by his side, and he will sail off into the sunset.
If the accusations were true, shame on him…he should have known better than to drag his party through this.
If the accusations are false, his life has been ruined and the media and the liars are to blame.
Either way, I think he loses.
HornetSting on December 2, 2011 at 4:58 PM
No doubt. I bailed off the Cain Train before the allegations came up. But at least he should’ve had the chance to compete in the early primaries based on the strength, or lack thereof, of his ideas.
John the Libertarian on December 2, 2011 at 4:59 PM
If he were a Democrat, he would be defended feverishly by an outraged left stating he was brought down by racist, lying white women.
Sharpton, Cornell West and his rich, white liberal media stars like Maddow Bashir, Moore, etc., would be renting their clothes and screaming at the top of their lungs.

Can we conduct the lessons learned now to pass on to future GOP wannabes?
1. Check to see if you have any longstanding personal relationships with women your wife doesn’t know.
2. Actually take the time to study foreign policy and other important aspects of the job.
3. Don’t play the race card.
4. Don’t brag about your ignorance.
5. Do like Herman did and come up with an easily understood plan that is memorable and branding for your campaign.
Did I miss anything?

a capella on December 2, 2011 at 5:19 PM
Cain can be the world’s worst bigamist for all I care. The man is still orders of magnitude more qualified to be chief executive than the unmitigated disaster infesting the Whitehouse now. Every minute wasted on media led scandal mongering is a minute wasted ridding the Republic of Obama and his far left radical cabal. That is the only issue that matters.
RobertE on December 2, 2011 at 5:20 PM
I think that Herman gets the message that his oppo’s are sending and that he’s likely to pack it up tomorrow with a wave and a smile. I don’t know if the accusations made against him are true or not but I also think that where theres smoke there’s fire. A married man has no business communicating with a “friend” in the wee hours of the AM/PM if their relationship is purely plutonic.
At any rate, he stands no chance of getting the nomination now anyway so it wouldn’t be a stretch I guess for him to stay in just for shats and giggles until after Iowa. I also think that this was outed by someone on our side that knew the truth and didn’t want Herman to get the nomination only to have him (and the election) destroyed a month before the big day.
volnation on December 2, 2011 at 5:24 PM
So do I, but he ran a horrible campaign, just a novice.
And there is the problem, Cain hid his “problems” and tried to excuse them, people do not like “surprises”.
We are a forgiving people, but not if we think we are being scammed…and Cain tried too many times to hide some of these skeletons.
And after admitting that his wife didn’t know about “payments”, we can see why he wasn’t straightforward.

MadisonConservative on December 2, 2011 at 5:26 PM
Team Obama would have loved to face Herm Cain in the general. He was very beatable. It benefited them not at all to drum him out of the race. Don’t you think they’d be more interested in dispatching Mitt Romney to open the field for someone like Cain?
Cain was not hurt by the initial Gloria Allred press conference. Remember, his audience is conservatives, who don’t much trust things like that. It was his foreign policy expertise that did him in with primary voters.

triple on December 2, 2011 at 5:32 PM
It would be better if he had tangible evidence of such and then asked the media (in Gingrich fashion) why they were shlling for the “O”, Trying to Crucify Herman and generally not doing their job!!!
RedLizard64 on December 2, 2011 at 5:34 PM
Cain is probably out, and it’s probably best both for himself, his family, and our chances of throwing Barack Obama out of office.
Whether or not the women’s allegations are true, Cain was still a flawed candidate. His 9-9-9 plan was a novel idea, but the 9% sales tax would hurt so many people that most middle-income people would vote against him. A man doesn’t have to know foreign policy to run a pizza company, but a US President DOES, and this would seriously hurt Cain if he had won the nomination.
This is a common problem for businessmen who try to go into politics. Republicans have a knack for nominating businessmen to run for Senate seats, because they can be “self-financing” in campaigns, but they usually lose, because they’re often not familiar with non-economic issues that are important to voters. Where are Senators Carly Fiorina and Linda McMahon? Oh, wait a minute, they lost. On the Democrat side, Jon Corzine bought a Senate seat in New Jersey, but is now in disgrace…
If the women accusing Cain were Democrat “plants”, why aren’t there women accusing Romney of sexual harrassment, since Romney polls better against Obama than Cain does? Maybe it’s simply because Romney controls himself, and Cain doesn’t?
Steve Z on December 2, 2011 at 5:34 PM

If Herm didn’t ACT like a bastard maybe his campaign wouldn’t be tanking.
annoyinglittletwerp on December 2, 2011 at 5:34 PM
Maybe if we find a kid now and train him over the next 50 years. Then he can run for president with absolutely no past no matter how small and insignificance that the media can use to destroy him without even one vote being cast.
tjexcite on December 2, 2011 at 5:35 PM
Cain has a stronger grasp of foreign policy certainly than Mitt Romney or Newt Gingrich. Mitt Romney speaks in soundbites and platitudes, whereas Newt Gingrich will probably get a lot of brilliant and completely infeasible ideas that he will rush to implement, just like Barack Obama.
Cain is willing to identify our allies and enemies and explain our roles with each. He’s certainly made gaffes before, but please… an eleven second PAUSE compared with Mitt Romney whining about Brett Baier and Newt Gingrich being on top of the polls for 3 days and declaring himself inevitable?
Give me a break. My bet is, tomorrow Cain announces he’s not only staying in the race, but he’s rolling out additional policy proposals.
BKennedy on December 2, 2011 at 5:36 PM

John the Libertarian on December 2, 2011 at 5:48 PM
Newt will face a lot of scrutiny about his past affairs. But if he has honestly cleaned up his life since then, and nothing RECENT turns up, most voters will probably give him a pass, and focus on his stands on political issues versus those of Obama.
If Gingrich has honestly converted to Catholicism, and is determined to live the rest of his life honestly before God, he might make a strong and trustworthy President after a life-changing experience.
We have seen this, on a different issue, with George W. Bush, who had a serious drinking problem until he was 40 years old, when Laura told him to either give up alcohol or his marriage. Bush became a teetotaler from then on, and was later elected President twice, although a DUI arrest from 1986 was revealed a few days before the 2000 election.
It is possible to be redeemed from past sins, but Gingrich needs a long track record of faithfulness to be forgiven by the voters.

For Herman Cain to leave because of unfounded accusations, suppositions, assumptions, and vitriol is just wrong.
It would be one thing if he was not a nominee because of policy issues or even on his lack of knowledge in an area, but to go because of what a Democrat is found guilty of all the time is pathetic.

Who knows, maybe Herman will stay in the race. He will fight an uphill battle against the allegations, and I doubt he can win. Who has a 13-year relationship in which he gives a woman money seemingly for the heck of it (so he says)? This is questionable behavior even if no extramarital shenanigans were involved. And his wife found out from the media? Uh-oh.

Okay, that’s it.
You have a habit of getting personal and insulting with people who are just talking about the candidates. You’ve done it with me a number of times, when I’ve offered my opinion of Cain or his campaign.
It’s that sort of thing that is wrong with this place now. We all have someone we support, and none of us enjoy seeing our candidate maligned or criticized – but it’s a discussion about public figures.
Get some thicker skin, FGS.
capitalist piglet on December 2, 2011 at 6:29 PM
I think Cain has played his supporters. It’s unlikely that a man would repeatedly give cash to a woman his wife has no knowledge of if there was nothing there.
People love him enough they would probably forgive him his personal failings, but I’d be surprised if they’d forgive him for fundraising through these scandals if it turns out there’s something to them – and it sure smells like there is.

If no one comes forward that can absolutely PROVE that something nefarious was going on between her and Gingrich since Gingrich married Calista, I suspect that his past will be overlooked since he supposedly converted to Catholicism and “saw the light” of his bad behavior.
However, we do know that the press will make stuff up. Palin said last night she is still dealing with made up stuff about affairs that she and Todd have supposedly had, and dealing with the Trig Truthers. She is pretty fed up with the baseless smears and lies.
However, she made it really clear she despises dirtbags who cheat on their wifes.
