“Recall Walker” effort starting strong, with 300,000 signatures in 12 days
posted at 9:25 am on December 1, 2011 by Tina Korbe
In case you missed it, United Wisconsin announced earlier this week that its members collected more than 300,000 signatures in support of a Scott Walker recall election in just 12 days. That’s not necessarily surprising — single-issue activists are notoriously focused and motivated people — but it’s still impressive, translating into more than 1,040 signatures an hour.
That’s also more than half the number needed. To trigger an election, the group has to collect at least 540,208 signatures. It seems safe to say they’ll reach that goal, especially with dedicated volunteers like blogger BattiestGrrl, who has made it a personal goal to collect 1,000 signatures herself and has challenged friends to do the same. Presumably, they’re even closer today to the necessary number than they were Monday, but I’m not sure how much closer. I put in a request for the updated number of signatures, but haven’t heard back yet. As soon as they do hit their target, officials will determine the election date, which could possibly be as early as March 27.
It’s important to keep in mind, though, that a signature to allow the recall election to go forward is still very different than a vote to actually recall the governor. I still think he’ll withstand the opposition’s best effort. The removal of a governor before the expiration of his term is no easily accomplished feat. In fact, just two gubernatorial recall elections in history have been successful — the efforts to recall California Gov. Gray Davis in 2003 and North Dakota Gov. Lynn Frazier in 1921.
Furthermore, while the latest reports of Walker’s approval rating reveal he’s not exactly popular (just 38 percent strongly approve), they also reveal he’s not exactly universally hated either (just 38 percent strongly disapprove). His recall will depend on highly incensed voters — and there might not be quite enough of those to oust him from office.
And, as I’ve written before, Scott Walker stands to succeed where people expect him to fail for a simple, old-fashioned reason: He’s a man of principle.
It’ll be a battle from start to finish — as every installment of this serial story has been. Both sides will be active and engaged in the fight. Since the recall effort began Nov. 15, Walker’s team has released a couple ads to downplay the recall attempt, for example, and, today, Wisconsin Democratic State Rep. Brett Hulsey released an ad against Walker. But, at this point, after two expensive attempts to rid Wisconsin of the court justice and state legislators who enabled Walker’s law to go forward in the first place, Walker opponents stand to lose far more than Walker supporters.
With every step — even with a successful signature drive — they look more foolish. What has been — and continues to be — most bizarre to me about the animosity toward Walker is that he wasn’t elected on false pretenses; he said his goal would be to balance the budget by virtually whatever means necessary and he has steadfastly pursued that goal. But according to his opponents, “Wisconsin can’t wait” for the normal election process. Hasn’t anybody ever told these people “patience is a virtue” or “wait your turn”? Wisconsin kindergarten teachers, at least, should know better.

Just because his son turned out to be a sword fighter, shouldnt mean he changes his position on homosexual marriage. You personal issues should not have bearing on what you supposedly believed. Either homosexual marriage is a threat to traditional marriage and is wrong or it isnt, to you. If your son turns out to be someone who likes incest, would that change your beliefs on incest?

Why would there be a gap? The 50-64 were there for the sexual revolution. They taught the rest of the age group on down. It’s only recently that the “free love” crowd is starting to the effects of what they hath wrought.

Hey Allah how about you link how Portman was actually treated by the gay community when he changed his postion. How about you link the wonderful reception he actually got. That wouldn’t fit in your narrative though that Repubs would be beloved if we all suddenly changed our position though would it?

He’s a sitting senator from Ohio who lied to his constituents into thinking he was a conservative.
He also will be losing his seat in the fall of 2016 as Ohio will complete the process of turning deep blue (Gov. Kasich’s assured loss to Ed Fitzgerald next November will only start that process).

I’ve looked at the Autopsy Report.
I have lingering questions. 1. Is this the final straw that will break the R party and thus ending it? 2. Why do the RNC blame their members for their own failures?…Have they ever taken a course in Marketing? (hint: No)…3. Precisely how do you rise in politics without any political skills? (this is an especially important question for Rs since they routinely demonstrate poor media/political skills.
They have Zero ability to finesse a situation…to provide nuance. You are either for Comprehensive Immigration Reform that we draft…or you are a nativist/racist. You are either Pro SSM, or a bigoted homophobe out of touch with modernity
More importantly, i have a Theory.
The R elites have no understanding of their base. They actually adopt the caricature of the ‘conservative’ vote that the Left provides them.
Second, our guys are not the brightest bulbs…and have poor speaking skills and poor media skills.
Mitt’s comment about ‘self-deportation’ was viewed harshly by hispanics. Wow, and how much did they spend to find that out. Mitt is not stupid, but he is not a skilled speaker…he was not good at talking under pressure. Mitt Failed.
The GOP failed by not vetting Akin….and not training Akin. Claire new exactly what she wanted in an R candidate..and she made damn sure she got it. Now how stupid is the GOP?

Why would we ban Churches from performing gay marriage and weddings? Freedom of association is a real thing. There are churches in this country and religious people can argue whether or not they are actually Christian who do acknowledge gay marriage and weddings. That is not the problem. The problem is that this has never been just about gay marriage. It has never been about live and let live. It has been about using gay marriage as a gateway to bludgeon traditional marriage. We want freedom of association and freedom from association. It is homosexuals who are against that. See lawsuits against businesses and courts case rulings against parents in Massachusetts.

New CNN #poll has SSM support at 53/44% which is down slightly from last yr. The 2012 exits, which tend to over report young and minority opinion showed support for gay marriage at 49/46. It barely passed in Maryland but yet we have heard nothing but gay marriage pandering from the GOP since November.
Maybe they should concentrate on convincing voters they have the answers to the issues voters rate as most important and skip alienating voters who make up a huge portion of R voter base. In 2012 Obama won supporters of gay marriage by 73%-25%. Romney won opponents 74%-25%. It’s delusional to believe supporters of gay marriage will suddenly start voting GOP but you can bet the ranch if you give social conservatives no reason to show up they won’t show up.

Pork-Chop on March 18, 2013 at 8:32 PM
My condolences.
1. Unless a miracle happens, this will be the suicide pill that the GOP will ingest. Conservatives and libertarians will walk out. There is no other course.
2. Because they cannot accept their own failings. Plus they think that by beating up on conservatives, they will “look cool” in the eyes of the left.
3. Money talks. A lot of people (Rove, Reince) bought their way in. Others have been in the system forever and have no other life to speak of (McCant, McConnell, Bohenor, Barbour) and have seen the game pass them by. Others (Grahamnesty, Murkowski, Collins) are pure scumbags.
They act out the elephant mascot quite well. See a mouse, they pull an Al Roker and cower in fear.
It also doesn’t help that they view Socialists as “my friends” (for lack of a better term). Hell, McCant has always been seen as the R who would stop at nothing to get along with Dems. And look what that got him on Election Night 2012.
The GOP made sure that Mitt was the ‘inevitable’ nominee. For years they were crowing him the “presumptive” GOP nominee – months and even YEARS before a single primary vote was cast or caucus conducted. They went head over heels to blast away at Sarah Palin, calling her “unelectable” over and over and over again.
In the end, the unelectable candidate was Mitt.
It was also the fault of the state GOP for not kicking him out of the race when he kept seeing windmills to jab at with a sword. He should have been DQed immediately.
The sky’s the limit on that one.

Let’s be honest about the situation: the problem is not Priebus nor the GOP. The country has become an idiocracy, and the party brass is just trying to salvage votes. It’s cynical and perhaps useless, but I can’t totally blame them. We were outnumbered by idiots last Nov, and they’re desperate to bring some of them into our camp if we’re to win another election. I don’t buy that conservatives stayed home when they had the opportunity to vote this a-hole out. I just don’t. The electorate has been dumbed down, and we’re now outnumbered.
I cannot explain why for Gen-X & Gen-Y-ers gay marriage is the preeminent issue while Obama is spending the country into oblivion. People have their priorities out of wack – that’s what happens to countries in decline.

You can be evangelical and still bail from practicing the faith. You can be evangelical and still be thrice divorced with no kids. Does the name Limbaugh ring a bell?
budfox on March 18, 2013 at 8:44 PM
As LibFree said in another thread – which was a true statement – the RNC is behind Portman on this because…
Gay Americans have been a cash cow for certain industries
Why?
Because they are predominantly single and childless.
I don’t expect most of you to know the inner workings of the entertainment industry, but one of the dirty little secrets is to either sell yourself as either gay-friendly/supportive or even coy about your sexuality.
Why? To build an LGB fanbase.
Why? Because dollars have become so fractured over the past thirty years, we no longer have majorities.
Majorities do not watch television shows outside of major, major events now.
Majorities do not go to movies outside of really big summer releases.
Majorities no longer buy magazines or newspapers.
The culture splinters into even narrower pieces with each decade.
…and that splintering finally caught up with the GOP, because as a party of ideology, they’re reliant on a blanket message.
But the Dems are a balkan party, already made up of fractures.
So the Dems naturally fit the current culture because it’s how we communicate. The MSM refers to it as “identity politics” but it’s now. It’s market-focus.
The GOP in its current form cannot compete in narrowcasting because the power structure refuses to delegate authority.
This is why Rand and Rubio are the top dogs. They’re on the verge of defining individual sectors who lean on the right side of the spectrum.
This is exactly what guys like Limbaugh do not want to happen, because command-n-control moves out of the normal sphere. Away from the Bushes and power brokers and into the leaders of a new coalition.
But there is no other way until the current communication structure changes.
budfox on March 18, 2013 at 8:44 PM
They didn’t spend a dime. Their democrat friends who support amnesty told them that’s what happened, and republicans accepted it as the truth. I mean, why wouldn’t they? Democrats are only trying to help our side win.

Portman and Priebus fall into the same entitled category as Jumpin’ Jim Jeffords and Snarlin’ Arlen Specter before both finally quit faking as GOP and jumped over to the opposition. Both suggest a willingness pretend to represent a party platform to get the campaign money but do the opposite once the mood hits.
In representative government Portman’s duty is to represent those whom have sent him to Washington not his particular whims, fancies and principles for a given day. Portman, more or less, is practicing nepotism as representative more so of his son than of his constituents. That constitutes bad government in a representative republic.

One of the problems with primary campaigns is the class of candidates willing to challenge an incumbent. They tend to be scarier to the middle than the typical candidate. The ones competent enough to win primaries include Richard Mourdoch in Indiana, and Joe Miller in Alaska.
So, the RNC as reason not to support anyone planning a bid against Portman. They also wouldn’t want someone who feels so passionately about an issue that seems to be less popular by the day on the ballot in a major swing state at the same time as a presidential election.

You bet he’s chipper. Just like Eric Cantor is chipper about moving toward the left. To these people, power is intoxicating, the music from the lyre, but principles are the hard work of practice and performance. They see the power Obama has arrogated with his audacious leftism and the media love it engenders and they think they can get a piece of that high by imitation. They simply can’t comprehend that the media will ALWAYS hate them, that conservatives will become increasingly disgusted with them, that the electorate will never settle for imitators when it can get the real thing. Conservative principles and confronting the Left and media — that’s unthinkable at this point. It’s simply beyond their strength and character.
I was in the audience when Andrew Breitbart told us he wasn’t sure who he had more contempt for, the Left or the GOP establishment that refused to fight the Left. I’m now sure. The Left is at least true to itself. The GOP has become everything I despise about politics and people.

Do the Republicans really think, by sniffing Gay or Hispanic bicycle seats, they are going to increase their vote from these minorities? Do the Republicans really think that by throwing money (but not quite as fast as the Democrats) at problems or minorities they will increase their vote totals? Why vote for an imitation Socialist when you can have the real one at the same price? Give the Democrats time and they will choke on their own spit–let’s not fight the enemy by becoming one of them.

I recall when Todd Akin said something stupid and then apologized, Priebus pulled financial support along with Rove. I guess a homosexual “marriage” politician is better than a Conservative in favor of Marriage in Priebus’s eyes.
Glad to know he stands where I always thot he did.
Wonder what would happen if ALL Conservatives stayed home?

This must be what it felt like to be a conservative in the aftermath of the 1964 elections.

Need to get rid of Priebus. Really, what positives does this guy bring to the table? Lousy communicator, not quick on his feet, elitist name ( I know he can’t help that), no enthusiasm…on & on…….C’mon, there has to be a lot better alternatives than this chump.

The RNC is merely going in the exactly precisely wrong direction. You thought Mitt was bad. See what they serve up next!
All that soul searching and all they do is decide to if you can’t beat ‘em join ‘em?
That thinking sure helped Embalm me Romney in the last two debate debacles!

You people are rude and vile. You simply cannot have an intelligent discussion with people who talk this way about other people. No wonder you will continue to lose elections. Again and again. Until you catch your tone, get used to losing.

I suppose you lean Democratic, but the real problem the GOP faces is that even their own consevative politically kids agree with you. I know gay kids in their 20′s and they want to be Republicans, but for this type of talk.
The way I look at this conversation is that it can’t do much damage politically for the GOP when the election is so far away, but I just hope for some discretion during election season. Discretion is a Conservative value–just a reminder.

Actually I do not lean Democractic at all. My family is Reagan Democrats and I have voted GOP every election I have been eligible to vote it. I love the economic policy, personal responsibility and empowerment that conservatives espouse. And limited government. I am gay. Not rabid crazy gay activist gay, either.
I like reading the news here and have been reading since college. I worked on Jindal’s 1st campaign as gov, his successful Congressional run, Bush 2004, and numerous elections in Colorado (Allard, Owens, Beauprez). But I get so miffed when I come here and I get compared to a pedophile, pervert, some devious person, etc. I am not trying to ruin your society or stop you from practicing your religion.
I will NEVER vote Democrat. But I don’t feel comfortable voting GOP knowing that there are people like the above in its ranks. Oh well LOL….

Oops…I mean Reagan Republicans…OMG…I still need another cup of coffee, my mom and aunt would gag that I called them Democrats LOL

Remind me again why we kicked Michael Steele to the curb…?
At least he had some good ideas to try and attract young voters (I didn’t scoff at the “Hip Hop Republicans” bit). And he was at the helm of the 2010 resurgence.
