Adam Carolla’s R-rated — but right-on — rant

posted at 9:18 pm on December 1, 2011 by Tina Korbe

In case you missed it on Glenn Beck radio, comedic podcaster Adam Carolla put the Occupy Wall Street movement in its place in unforgettable fashion. This is indispensable audio just as Leon Cooperman’s open letter to President Obama is required reading — for both very similar and very different reasons.

First, the fundamental similarity: Both Carolla and Cooperman invite the United States (Carolla addressing the OWS protesters, Cooperman addressing the president) to be again what it once was — not merely a land of opportunity, but a land in which ordinary people rejoice at the opportunity of others and seek not to tear down but to build up. Both Carolla and Cooperman expose the corrosive and corrupting influence of envy, which, as C.S. Lewis once said of pride, “gets no pleasure out of having something, only out of having more of it than the next man.” Perhaps the better way to phrase it would be to say envy “gets no pleasure out of having something unless it was first had by and then taken from the next man.” Both Carolla and Cooperman prophesy the inevitable outcome of an envy-eaten society — an impoverished economy and culture, in which no one is so prosperous as he could be.

Now, the fundamental difference: Whereas Cooperman conveys a tone of stern and sober disappointment, Carolla sinks all-too-often into crass-and-brash. But the disparate styles reveal that, whoever the messenger, whatever the method of delivery, truth is truth. And the truth is, both the president and the Occupy Wall Street protesters have bought into the lie that success is a zero-sum game, that the more someone else has of it, the less another can achieve. But, in the United States at least, there need not be a limit to how much we accomplish in the way of creating prosperity and a rich, supportive culture.

Without further ado, I give you Adam Carolla (just don’t listen to this at work … or, if you insist, click the clean version instead).

What has happened to simple moral truths. Envying others who have more than you, isn’t that a feature of the disease of our current culture, of narcissism?

HIGHLY recommended. Maybe Corolla could take a look at this.

PappyD61 on December 1, 2011 at 9:36 PM

I like Carolla but I thought this was incomplete. Probably because he’s not really political, or not willing or able to understand Leftism. While the stuff about the self-entitled culture was accurate, in fact he missed the whole academic project of the Left to corrupt civic education and turn the academic enterprise into a kind of secular, anti-American version of the seminary. Those kids in the OWS, many of them, are actually anti-American missionaries newly frocked in the “liberal arts” academy.

Teaching the complex and demanding beauties of freedom and the marketplace, which require responsible and informed maintenance, is long gone. We’re producing not just “self-entitled” kids who get A’s for showing up but kids reinforced by their professors to regurgitate leftist distortions straight from Howard Zinn and who are completely civically ignorant and unable to think critically and for themselves.

given the history of man it is totally insane to diss capitalism.

well, insane if you are a normal person, but not so insane if you are one of those with ultra-high power needs…or as Leo’s letter put it:

To frame the debate as one of rich-and-entitled versus poor-and-dispossessed is to both miss the point and further inflame an already incendiary environment. It is also a naked, political pander to some of the basest human emotions – a strategy, as history teaches, that never ends well for anyone but totalitarians and anarchists.

‘Chickification of the News’ indeed.

If the OWS crowd had actually got spanked a few times during their formative years, they wouldn’t be the whinging parasites they are now. They would have developed a proper visceral appreciation of the linkage between choices and consequence – and by extension, the linkage between hard work and reward. And they wouldn’t have been so stupid as to be swayed by marxist class-warfare arguments.

Can’t really do Adam Carolla anymore.

Axe on December 1, 2011 at 10:42 PM

And now we know why Adam Carolla is relegated to podcasts instead of hosting a show on radio or TV. Blackballed.

Carolla isn’t a Hollywood lib. Been watching and listening to him for years. “The Man Show.” “Loveline” with Dr. Drew.

Just because someone talks about sex openly or uses rough language does not automatically make them an enemy of “conservatives.” Hell, Ben Franklin was one of the biggest misogynists, philanderers, and, opportunists in early American history. Yet he loved true liberty. Not unlike many today who do things the “conservative” base detest yet that are still within their right to do within the model of true liberty.

Freedom means that some people will be able to say and do things that you don’t like. It also means that you will be able to do and say some things that others won’t like equally. Each has to accept and embrace.

I’m a big Adam Carolla fan and listen to his podcast daily. He is definitely small l libertarian. But he has some very liberal views, especially in the area of religion and drugs.

It’s kind of funny, but a lot of the message board members are up in arms that this rant has resonated in various conservative blogs. If he trashes the left calling the liberal pu$$ies, they call him uniformed. If he trashes religion, silence. Of course Carolla is the top downloaded podcast and there are probably 30-40 regular posters, so I don’t know if it’s a valid sample. ;)

And the truth is, both the president and the Occupy Wall Street protesters have bought into the lie that success is a zero-sum game, that the more someone else has of it, the less another can achieve.

This is the problem with GOP supporters; there’s this obliviousness to basic economic theory. Success, defined as wealth accumulation, is by its very definition a zero-sum game. There is only a certain amount of money available at any given time, and when one classes share of it increases, it decreases the share by all other classes. As the rich have gotten richer the people working for them have had to sacrifice salary, benefits and jobs.

Adam, for the record, comes off as pretty ignorant. It’s a very small minority talking about overthrowing the system. Most are just trying to draw attention to the fact that corporate America has reneged on all of its social responsibility and the wealthy have gone from enriching themselves while enriching everyone else to enriching themselves at the expense of everyone else. Adam’s main audience are the every day workers whose struggles are being represented by the OWS movement, and I have a funny feeling that his podcast is going to take a pretty big hit because of this.

He’s not on the air anymore because he WANTS to do the podcast. He was recently offered a mega-deal for a radio gig that he shocked himself in turning down. He answers to no one. He gets to pursue other projects. He’s finding huge success with the podcast. He gets to speak directly to his fans. Who wouldn’t want that.

He can talk easily without swearing. He did it for years on the radio & TV.

If you haven’t watched his movie, The Hammer, you have to. One of the best sports movies that I’ve ever seen & it had a huge heart.

Thats simply idiotic. Money is just a piece of paper we trust to hold value for a certain period of time.

Wealth has increased dramatically every century. The goodies basket held by the average European is far greater than it was 100 years ago. Where did that come from if it wasn’t created?

Wealth is being created all the time and it is clearly not a zero sum game.

Adam’s main audience are the every day workers whose struggles are being represented by the OWS movement, and I have a funny feeling that his podcast is going to take a pretty big hit because of this.

Rainsford on December 2, 2011 at 1:54 AM

Their struggles are largely a facet of their willful ignorance and their belief that others owe them a living. They chose to indulge themselves in foolish educational paths that had no earning potential and are now shocked to discover that no one is going to pay them for ethnic studies, or French poetry majors. They were betrayed, that much is true, but it was their professors who carried out that petty betrayal. Those professors sold them at premium prices a tired old ideology that the world had long since rejected, and then booted them out the door into a world that had no use for their idiocy.

Given time some will be able to break the bonds of that mental straitjacket. Tragically, others won’t.

There nothing objectively true in this statement. OWS is mainly about overthrowing the system — their demands as well as their “street” behavior clearly do not represent the pursuit of any “arrangement” or co-existence with freemarket capitalism as it stands. There is not even a formative Menshevik movement within the OWS movement. It is radical in theory and fascist in behavior.

The false premise of “corporate America’s social responsibility” is also noted. What is this “social responsibility”, that is, beyond producing valuable goods and services, shouldering the highest corporate taxes of any nation on earth, and providing livelihood, income and associated benefits including healthcare to millions of people?

Adam Carolla on atheism.

Sorry if that bursts a lot of your bubbles. ;-)

Best quote

“You religious people tell me, or atheists, you tell me. If a few thousand years ago I came up with a religion or a god that said, “Hey everybody, everything’s good, you do unto others as you would have them do unto you, and you love your neighbor, and you stay out of trouble, and then when you die, that’s about it and you just turn into dirt. Tell me if you think that concept would have taken off. Tell me if that concept would have been embraced and people would have picked it up and run with it. NO! It wouldn’t have!”

not merely a land of opportunity, but a land in which ordinary people rejoice at the opportunity of others and seek not to tear down but to build up.

I worked in Mexico for several years in the eighties,
One evening I watched an interview with Julio Iglesias, during the interview he was explaining the differences between the US and Mexico so he used a small story to get his point across.
“One day a grandfather and his grandson were crabbing in the Gulf of Mexico just off the Mexican coast. They had two containers to put crabs in, one with a lid and one without. As they were catching the crabs the grandfather would tell the grandson which container to put them in. Towards the end of the day the Grandson asked why he put the crabs into separate containers. The grandfather replied, you see that container with no lid? Those crabs are from Mexico. If you watch you will see that every time a crab gets close to getting out another crab reaches up and pulls him back in. The other container contains crabs from the US. If you do not put the lid on it they will all get out”

As I read what Carolla and Cooperman said, this story came to mind.

Athiests can’t be trusted? That’s some impressive ignorance right there, Pablo.

There are a few people here crying about his “foul” language and slagging him off, but the guy has the most downloaded podcast in existance. And if you knew anything about him you’d know he’s doing what he’s doing because that’s what he wants to do. Not because it’s something he’s been relagated to. He’s very successfull (and wealthy from it) and generally employs himself rather than rely on others to employ him.

His celebrity is that he gives his opinion. That’s pretty much what he’s known for, providing his opinion in a humorous manner. He’s not a celebrity giving his opinion… he is a celebrity because of his opinion. And hundreds of thousands of people listen to him. And agree with him.

Stop shooting the messenger. And maybe even learn a little about the messenger before you judge. You sound like the intolerant left when you do that.
