Obama to abandon white working class?

posted at 8:45 am on November 29, 2011 by Karl

Not quite. Slate’s resident JournoLister, Dave Weigel, apparently thinks it’s raaaacist of FoxNation to highlight the most provocative part of an NYT post by Thomas Edsall making the claim. Weigel is particularly taken by a photo of “Obama gritting his teeth and waving ‘see ya,’ while flanked by his wife and an unidentified black guy. Others might figure the photo was selected for the first part, not the second, but others don’t have a history of secretly trying to shape media coverage of Obamacare while pretending to be covering the right from the inside. At least Weigel is imputing bad motive openly now.

The sad part is that Weigel kinda gets the real story right. Here’s Edsall’s hot-button lede:

For decades, Democrats have suffered continuous and increasingly severe losses among white voters. But preparations by Democratic operatives for the 2012 election make it clear for the first time that the party will explicitly abandon the white working class.

The blogosphere is mostly focused on the second sentence. Before casually flinging the race card, Weigel correctly emphasizes the first: “The funny thing here is that ‘abandoning’ the white working class means ‘continuing to lose voters who have been voting Republican since 1966.’ ” It’s not clear whether Weigel is implicitly flinging the race card again by selecting 1966 as his benchmark, but between 1960 and 2004, Democrats lost 12 percent of the non-Southern white men and 17 percent of white men in the South.

Nevertheless, it is fair to note the drop was particularly acute (.pdf) among the white working class during the period colloquially known as the Sixties — 55% of whites without a four year college degree voted for Dems in 1960-64, dropping to 35% in 1968-72. Some of this was racial, but arguably had more to do with the ascendancy of the New Left within the party, at the expense of organized labor. The hippie/Yippie-ization of the Democrats, which allowed the GOP to characterize the 1972 platform as “amnesty, abortion and acid” had as much to do with the migration of whites to the GOP as Selma or Watts.

Edsall’s column doesn’t really support his claim that Team Obama is “explicitly” abandoning that demographic now. Edsall is correct that the Obama campaign seems to be favoring:

a center-left coalition made up, on the one hand, of voters who have gotten ahead on the basis of educational attainment — professors, artists, designers, editors, human resources managers, lawyers, librarians, social workers, teachers and therapists — and a second, substantial constituency of lower-income voters who are disproportionately African-American and Hispanic.

Edsall then accurately traces the history of the “Emerging Democratic Majority” theory, and even gets this much right:

While demographic trends suggest the continued growth of pro-Democratic constituencies and the continued decline of core Republican voters, particularly married white Christians, there is no guarantee that demography is destiny.

Edsall just cannot bring himself to explain why, beyond a vague reference to GOP efforts to fracture the Democrat coalition. The reason is the slow death of the progressive blue model under the weight of our expanding national debt. That’s why the first part of the coalition Edsall describes identifies with the Occupy mob. Tax reform that will likely be adopted to stave off the debt bomb will also hit the upper-middle class in Blue states harder than most. The collapse of big government (and public sector pensions) will hit middle-class minorities hard as well.

In short, the white working class has been abandoning the Democrats long before Obama came on the scene. They are just among the first off the sinking ship of progressivism. Obama could end up above water in 2012, but the longer-term trend remains bleak, as progressivism ends up with less and less to offer the remains of its coalition.

Obama’s racist?

Washington Nearsider on November 29, 2011 at 8:49 AM

I think this hints at but doesn’t state the fact that conservatives see clearly: The problem is not the messenger, it’s the message. Liberalism is failing – spectacularly. (see: Europe, fall of.)

Until someone mainstream is willing to say that out loud (that this isn’t just an Obama problem, but an ideology problem) we’re going to be in this mess longer rather than shorter.

They took our jobs.

coldwarrior on November 29, 2011 at 8:54 AM

The reason is the slow death of the progressive blue model under the weight of our expanding national debt.

AMR, parent company of American Airlines files Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Every industry where union labor achieves dominance is driven into bankruptcy;big steel, big auto, big transportation. Every state where unions dominate with close shop laws requiring membership in unions if you want to work is in or approaching bankruptcy.

When a company goes bankrupt, employees lose their job, their status their retirement. What happens when a Nation goes bankrupt? Remember that unions now dominate government where government employees must join unions.

Imagine that, the Democrat party abandoning the white, middle class. Maybe it’s the other way around, the white, middle class is abandoning the hijacked (by the far left) Democrat Party.

It was several years ago that the Democrat Party abandoned God and became the immoral, homosexual promoting, baby-killing party of the left.

Pretty soon all that will be left are the blacks still on the Democrat plantation, the illegal aliens living in this country, and Muslims.

How is this not the most evil of use of patriarchy as described by libersls when invoking the worst possible sense of the word? Sounds like the Democrats are using the old plantation model, again.

BINGO – Obama’s core voters are the bums, welfare cheats, communists, and in general, the parasites that live off the hard work and largese of this country.

Obama relies on these worthless braindead bums and poverty pimps.

I’ve long believed argued that Obama was just another one of the Godless anti-America (constitution)radicals that the left supports fully (they actually are irate because he isn’t going Stalin on us fast enough)
The next leftist will be the same with a moderate skin made from a Trojan Horse -after the election – more destruction, only now the machine has stopped pretending, they are taking us down. That is the goal, and any means to an end is the process, including crisis dejour, anarchy, violence, rigged elections, bypassing congress, creating law from fiat, commiting crimes with impudence by owning the justice system and the ability to not investigate or prosecute their own.

Sadly, nearly half of this nation is of the parisite class and they badly want failed socialism, guilt free abortion, sexually perverted culture, the theft of parenthood, and the perverted morality of making a sacrament of envy and success. Religion,(other than eco-worship) will be controlled by them, as in all totalitarian nations, will be the glorified cover for the evil they do -except for the martyrs that will soon join the 53 million slaughter humans by the abortion gods.

We have hit the bottom of the slippery slope.

Don L on November 29, 2011 at 9:18 AM

What the heck is the “white working class”? There are no classes in America, the most fluid society in the history of mankind.

And what does “working class” mean? I am really tired of people (even Rush, who should know better) using the phrase “working class” to exclude ‘white-collar’ people (who could be salesmen, computer programmers, insurance agents, clerks, teachers, managers, investment brokers, etc., etc., etc.), as if those people don’t work, too. What do we do, clip coupons?

What they really mean is the tax-payers.

The Dems intend to concentrate on those who will reflexively vote for them, i.e. government workers, academics, and the vast bulk of people who pay no federal income tax. Unfortunately, the latter amount to half the adult population.

The dems need the minorities BAD. That’s why the dems and MSM are all over Cain. Cain on the ticket could really bring them down.

I know if you are reading hotair, likely you hardly believe Cain is a formidable opponet against Obama. But, the truth is, he could certainly get a portion of the minority vote, that many of the other candidates could not get.

Nonetheless, if Cain isn’t the nominee, then the veep of the GOP nominee needs to have some ethnicity. Romney or Gingrich without some ethnic diversity on the ticket…that dog won’t hunt.

The folks who are getting the free stuff, don’t like the folks who are paying for the free stuff, because the folks who are paying for the free stuff can no longer afford to pay for both the free stuff and their own stuff.

The folks who are paying for the free stuff want the free stuff to stop, and the folks who are getting the free stuff want even more free stuff on top of the free stuff they are already getting!

Now… The people who are forcing the people who pay for the free stuff have told the people who are RECEIVING the free stuff, that the people who are PAYING for the free stuff, are being mean, prejudiced, and racist.

So… The people who are GETTING the free stuff have been convinced they need to hate the people who are paying for the free stuff by the people who are forcing some people to pay for their free stuff, and giving them the free stuff in the first place.

We have let the free stuff giving go on for so long that there are now more people getting free stuff than paying for the free stuff.

Now understand this. All great democracies have committed financial suicide somewhere between 200 and 250 years after being founded. The reason? The voters figured out they could vote themselves money from the treasury by electing people who promised to give them money from the treasury in exchange for electing them.

The United States officially became a Republic in 1776, 235 years ago. The number of people now getting free stuff outnumbers the people paying for the free stuff. We have one chance to change that. In 2012. Failure to change that spells the end of the United States as we know it.

Well, there’s a surprise. With manufacturing jobs all but gone, the backbone labor portion that used to reside there is leaving the Democrat label. Labor now means getting illegals signed up in service jobs to keep the dues flowing. Makes sense that Obama would focus on that constituency.

David Blue on November 29, 2011 at 11:00 AM

Education reform is extremely likely in the near future, as the academic bubble begins to pop. An unforeseen consequence of OWS is the amount of farking useless degrees now unemployed people have majored in over the years.

More and more, people are saying to themselves, “We’re paying for this?” Wiegel puts college-educated people in the D column in the future under the assumption that the bubble won’t pop, and colleges won’t be forced by changes in funding and policy to offer more practical, cheaper degrees and less underwater basketweaving.

As for Hispanics—they are swing voters, not automatic Democrats. I think once polls are read in states with Voter ID laws, the media will be shocked at how Hispanic citizens actually vote. The other day, someone was talking about a Univision poll. Ummm, most Hispanics I know who can follow enough English to do so watch American TV unless it’s a specific telenovela that Abuela went and hooked them on, or futbol. Simply because they don’t have white skin, it does not mean that they have not made serious inroads into the productive class, and might not also be sick of paying while others party.

I appreciate the candor.

As I have repeatedly told my former Comrades on the Left, my change came not so much because I left the Movement, but because the Movement left me.

Growing up in a “working class” family, my Dad was laid off, our house sold and life was downsized. A couple years later, he had a new job and we had a new house.

I don’t remember any handouts from the Guvmint, but some helpful church ladies come to mind.

The DFL party I grew up in was a strong supporter of economic growth and worker self-sufficiency.

That was 50 years ago.

It’s not my Father’s DFL anymore. It belongs to the elite college eggheads, the happily dependent constituents and the monied, tree-hugging cultural aristocrats.

I appreciate the clarity Obama’s strategery provides.

An inelegant truth accidentally spoken.

Works for me.

That’s the ugly truth that the Left is hoping you NEVER realize… the ‘old’ labels and images that they conceal themselves behind are merely a cloak to hide their true aspect.

Ignorance of their true intentions is what has kept them in the running, election-wise.

Any American, with a shred of their native character left within them, would recoil in disgust at their ‘dreams’ and desires for their ‘version’ of America.

Hence the growing number of people walking away from them.

It’s worse than that. In the original list there was not one occupation that creates wealth. I was in Russia this year and a couple of them indicated that we need a good Gulag movie with Hollywood pathos. I don’t know what happened to the recently released film “The Long Walk”.

There may be a wait for negative representations of left stuff. It took Hollywood 70 years to discover that the Soviets were dictators.

Don’t Play With Cancer. Rip it out. We need a major racism film!

Maybe NBC could work with the NYT on a film on AMERICAN RACISM post 2008. It would be wonderful. A great comedy to everyone but themselves. I’ll wear my tinfoil hat to see it.

This could highlight the abilities of the MSNBC staff and if insanity and emotion fuels the best art, the nitrogen paranoia mix in those tanks will give us a landmark hit that will resound through the ages.
