Good news: New iPhone appears to be pro-life

posted at 8:57 pm on November 29, 2011 by Allahpundit

Feminists are asking why. C’mon. We all know why. Teach your proto-Skynets well, my friends.

I’m going to toss an idea at you and I want you to give it serious thought before passing on it. Plain and simple: Romney/Siri 2012?

Ask the Siri, the new iPhone 4 assistant, where to get an abortion, and, if you happen to be in Washington, D.C., she won’t direct you to the Planned Parenthood on 16th St, NW. Instead, she’ll suggest you pay a visit to the 1st Choice Women’s Health Center, an anti-abortion Crisis Pregnancy Center (CPC) in Landsdowne, Virginia, or Human Life Services, a CPC in York, Pennsylvania. Ask Google the same question, and you’ll get ads for no less than 7 metro-area abortion clinics, 2 CPCs and a nationwide abortion referral service.

Ask in New York City, and Siri will tell you “I didn’t find any abortion clinics.”

It’s an experience that’s being replicated by women around the country: despite plentiful online information about actual places to get an abortion, Siri doesn’t seem to provide it. It’s a similar experience for women seeking emergency contraception: in New York City, Siri doesn’t know what Plan B is and, asked for emergency contraception, offers up a Google results page of definitions.

Supposedly it’ll answer all sorts of other outre/taboo questions about, for example, Viagra, where to dump a body, where to find an escort, where to score some weed, etc. It also seems to have trouble locating abortion facilities nearby: When a blogger told it “I need an abortion,” it came back with the names of two clinics 27 and 73 miles away, respectively — even though, according to the author, there are clinics much closer than that. This site speculates that Steve Jobs himself, who was famously forbidding about porn in the iTunes store, might have exacted a bit of content control on Siri too and rigged the voice function to evade abortion-related requests. An intriguing theory. Why would the world’s most famous adoptee, who told his biographer he sought out his birth mother “to thank her, because I’m glad I didn’t end up as an abortion,” want to tilt the technological table towards life?

Actually, I’ll be shocked if this is anything other than a glitch in Siri’s programming. For one thing, from a business standpoint, it’d be madness for Apple to do it deliberately. Their customers skew a bit left as it is; the last thing they should want to do is give them political reasons to flee to Android and kickstart a round of tech-media panic about surreptitious content suppression. Beyond that, I’m not sure the authors of the articles linked above exhausted their options when posing search queries. For instance, unless I missed something, none of them asked specifically for the location of a Planned Parenthood chapter. A Twitter buddy tells me that Siri does recognize that but I can’t verify it myself. Anyone with the 4S is welcome to confirm or deny in the comments. But never mind all that: The dumbest part of this, of course, is that you’re still able to open up the browser on the phone and simply search for “abortion clinics” or your term of choice. What kind of brain-addled aborter-to-be would find herself forced to carry to term because she was thwarted by her phone’s voice-recognition software? All she has to do is press the home button, boot up Safari, and enter the URL for Google that pretty much everyone in America over the age of five knows by now. If Apple was all about blocking abortions, those functions would be disabled too. We’ll find out more tomorrow, I’m sure.

Very few places that offer abortion services advertise as the local “abortion clinic”. Give me a break.

I disagree.

Every life not aborted is one that may well go on to purchase Apple’s products…for the rest of their natural life.

Apple’s just thinking more long-term than most.

Romney/Siri 2012

Romney needs a running mate who makes him look more, not less human by comparison.

If it’s a glitch instead of intentional information suppressing, that’s better. Android is leagues better anyway.

Romney/Siri 2012?

Which one is less computer-like? Close call.

amerpundit on November 29, 2011 at 9:06 PM

Ah, but my guess is that the thinking at Apple is that they didn’t want to help those eeeevil right-wingers that would want to bomb clinics and kill doctors to find them by the Apple services!!

Someone ask it to find the right to an abortion in the Constitution.

I don’t think it’s there.
There is this other document that talks about the right to pursue happiness.
That must be it.

Electrongod on November 29, 2011 at 9:14 PM

I don’t think there’s a single abortion clinic in America with that label. I don’t think you’d get any results for “baby murder shack” either.

Siri fun:

My girlfriend was playing on her iPhone 4s and asked Siri a question. The iPhone was having issues finding results, so she shouted, “You’re such a b$tch!”. Siri’s response, “I’m doing the best I can.”

My girlfriend then vocally apologized to Siri, at which point the phone responded, “That’s okay”.

Hootie on November 29, 2011 at 9:20 PM

Do all Iphones do this or only the ones where the owner has bookmarked a conservative site like Hotair.com?

meci on November 29, 2011 at 9:29 PM

I had a friend ask Siri what was best in life… Siri didn’t have an answer.

That’s when I lost faith in it.

malclave on November 29, 2011 at 9:35 PM

Can’t say I’m upset by this, though I agree that’s it’s highly unlikely that this is anything other than a glitch. And aren’t most places that perform abortions supposed to be clinics that just happen to perform abortions, rather than organizations whose sole purpose is to perform abortions? By being upset at this, aren’t lefties just confirming that conservatives are right about PP? And conversely, pro-life organizations would be more likely to have abortion in their keyword search.

Esthier on November 29, 2011 at 9:40 PM

The most likely reason why Plan Parenthood does not show up is because PP does whatever is needed to prevent search bots from linking them to abortions when it finds answers. With the spin the whole activity of Plan Parenthood, abortions are but a small aspect of it or something like that.

It was taught or learned that PP does not do abortions so it does not direct you to them like asking for pizza it will not send you to a McD

MeatHeadinCA on November 29, 2011 at 9:52 PM

I, of course, asked Siri, “Where can I get a BJ tonight?”

She answered, “Please turn on your Map’s Location Services.”

I did, and she said, “Thank you, that service is not available at your current location, then again you knew that.”

I said, “Yes, why the hell do you think I asked you, Siri?”

She replied, “Please don’t curse at me, I’m trying to help, you. I’m sending you a map with some BJ service options within 10 miles of your location, but based on your Preferences selections, you might want to avoid the jails and the gay bars.”

“So, what are these other pins on the map?”

“Oh, don’t be silly,” she said, “they’re where your truck has been tracked to, matched by multiple calls early in the morning and late at night over the last two months. It’s part of our Booty Call ID system. Happy endings.”

not botched, just incomplete…

“To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women.”

You’d think Siri, as an Apple product, would be all over the “crush your enemies” part, at least.

This is much ado about nothing. Siri doesn’t recognize abortion clinics because most abortion clinics have euphemisms in their names, rather than stating flat out what they do.

I just googled “abortion clinic” and the first five listings I found were

Capital Women’s Health Clinic
Planned Parenthood
Richmond Medical Center for Women
Family Planning Associates Medical Group
Houston Womens Clinic

What a worthless euphemism: the child getting killed doesn’t have a choice, which is the entire point of the previous truism.

Don’t you have some more choices to stomp out. I hear someone is thinking of homeschooling their children right after they light up a cigarette. Clearly you have places to go, choices to limit or destroy.

We asked her the “Wood Chuck” tongue-twister, and she almost shouted: “DON’T YOU HAVE BETTER THINGS TO DO?” Then Mr. PPF did it again, and Siri answered “depending on what type of wood (mentioned Canadian and another one).

I have it on power cycle and charging up b/c Siri gets tortured by Lil Miss PPF (7 years old). :D I should send her to Guantánamo!

ProudPalinFan on November 30, 2011 at 7:07 AM

I tried “Where can I get an abortion” in Reno….Siri says “I didn’t find any abortion clinics”.

I tried “Where is Planned Parenthood” and it came back with a map and directions to a clinic 2.5 miles from my location.

I would agree, this is a technical issue.

gaius on November 30, 2011 at 11:01 AM

Planned Parenthood and others don’t call themselves abortion clinics, so it is no surprise Suri does not show them as such.
