Evicted OWS protesters not so evicted

posted at 11:45 am on November 29, 2011 by Jazz Shaw

In both Philadelphia and Los Angeles, the city mandated deadlines for the squatters in the OWS encampments passed yesterday without the sites being cleared. In each case, the local government seemed to take a decidedly more “peaceful” approach to dismantling the camps than were observed in other sites such as New York and Oakland. And for at least some of the occupiers, this apparently became a “festive” occasion.

Deadlines for Wall Street protesters to leave their encampments came and went in two cities with no arrests in Philadelphia and a festive, party-like atmosphere as protesters in Los Angeles defied the order clear out early Monday.

Protesters defied the mayor’s deadline to vacate their encampment near City Hall in Los Angeles, with about 1,000 flooding into the area as hundreds of tents remained standing as they have for nearly two months.

A celebratory atmosphere filled the night with protesters milling about the park and streets by City Hall in seeming good spirits. A group on bicycles circled the block, one of them in a cow suit. Organizers led chants with a bull horn.

“The best way to keep a non-violent movement non-violent is to throw a party, and keep it festive and atmospheric,” said Brian Masterson.

I suppose you’ve got reason to feel “festive” if you’re able to defy a lawful order from the authorities and suffer no consequences for your actions. It’s likely not a coincidence that the mayors of Philadelphia and L.A (Michael Nutter and Antonio Villaraigosa respectively) are both individuals who made a point of expressing support for the occupiers in the early days, seeking to draw on their expected populist appeal to bolster their own standing with progressives. (In the case of Villaraigosa, he’s gone so far as to try to buy them off with prime business real estate and farmland.) After that, I suppose you look even worse when you send in the cops with confrontational riot control techniques.

Meanwhile, the dysfunctional tactics of the OWS movement continue to expand and confound reason. According to a press release from organizers, a West Coast Port Shutdown – similar to what was already seen in Oakland, only larger – is being planned for Dec. 12.

As of November 27, 2011, the Occupy movement in every major West Coast port city: Occupy LA, Occupy San Diego, Occupy Portland, Occupy Tacoma, Occupy Seattle have joined Occupy Oakland in calling for and organizing a coordinated West Coast Port Blockade and Shutdown on December 12, 2011. Other West Coast Occupies, including Occupy Anchorage and Vancouver, Canada are planning to join the economic blockade and disruption of the 1% on that date, according to organizers.

“We’re shutting down these ports because of the union busting and attacks on the working class by the 1%: the firing of Port truckers organizing at SSA terminals in LA; the attempt to rupture ILWU union jurisdiction in Longview, WA by EGT. EGT includes Bunge LTD, a company which reported 2.5 billion dollars in profit last year and has economically devasted poor people in Argentina and Brazil. SSA is responsible for inhumane working conditions and gross exploitation of port truckers and is owned by Goldman Sachs. EGT and Goldman Sachs is Wallstreet on the Waterfront” stated Barucha Peller of the West Coast Port Blockade Assembly of Occupy Oakland.

“We are also striking back against the nationally’ coordinated attack on the Occupy movement. In response to the police violence and camp evictions against the Occupy movement- This is our coordinated response against the 1%. On December 12th we will show are collective power through pinpointed economic blockade of the 1%.”

Yet another brilliant strategic ploy, I must say. If you want to stick it to the fat cat 1%ers and their elitist buddies, obviously the first thing you would do is shut down the work opportunities of … people who unload ships at the docks? Oh, and the date is also pure genius in terms of generating even more public support for their cause. I mean, how many of those container ships are carrying supplies of toys, clothes and other items typically found under Christmas trees? Yes, sir! If I wanted to garner support from soccer moms across the nation, I’d shut off the gift supply with only a dozen shopping days left before Santa arrives.

Let’s prepare a big bowl of popcorn, sit back, and see how that works out for them, shall we?

“disruption of the 1%”

These people really are unhinged. It’s not about fairness or the economy. It’s 100% pure hatred and envy.

Red Cloud on November 29, 2011 at 11:51 AM

Actually, Christmas merchandise has been in the states for at least a month.

As for “the work opportunities of … people who unload ships at the docks” you might want to look into the longshoremen’s union and their recent criminal acts. The OWS thugs are just joining up with another group of thugs they know are sympathetic.

Nice try, though. Would help if you were more informed.

Crazy liberal city governments confront crazy liberals and anarchists. Much craziness results.

Yep, the Democrats who support them and the media who support them. And at this point, the cities who have supported them deserve whatever they get too. Have at it OWS. Go tear up some college campuses while you’re at it. They are the ones ripping you off.

They had a big crowd at the deadline. As people go away, LAPD will then move in and clear out the tents. I expect it will be on a weekend so it doesn’t interfere with traffic.

As far as closing down the port, good luck with that.

Igor R. on November 29, 2011 at 12:03 PM

Pathetic.

Meanwhile, the city of Richmond, VA is auditing the Tea Party in response to their request to be reimbursed for the fees they paid for use of same same public areas at which OWS has protested at no charge and occupied.

Union leader endorses OWS.

Igor R. on November 29, 2011 at 12:08 PM

The following message needs to be sent to OWS.

“We are the 43% versus the 23% who oppose your occupation. We are your fathers, mothers, co-workers, neighbors who say, stop stinking up our parks and public places. Stop shouting silly mantras. Get a job. Abandon your safe from sexual predator zones. Listen to the cops, they know whats better for you than your commie friends.

You are not getting a Christmas present until you finally come home, take a bath, sit on a chair, be quiet and be a good boy/girl.”

Anyone living in the greater LA area is not surprised by the weak response from the mayor. Let’s face it, he’s one of them. This is what he did before he found more money in politics. Kinda like our dear leader.

dirtseller on November 29, 2011 at 12:15 PM

In Tampa today, the Occupy Tampa louts are reportedly applying to the mayor for the creation of a more permanent “home” for their protests, complete with areas for food production, medical treatment and a library.

A local TV station did their own little investigation of these losers’ voting records and found them to be a bunch of hypocrites.

Nutter is a big Democratic p*ssy. Why set an eviction deadline if you’re not going to follow through with it? It’s like telling a child he’ll be punished if he doesn’t clean his room today, then not punishing him once the day is over. It makes the parent look like an *ss, and the child learns that he can get away with more.

diditagain on November 29, 2011 at 12:33 PM

It won’t be a very diverse crowd out in cali if they’re doing this on Dia de la Virgen de Guadalupe, that’s also on the twelfth. Not that Hispanics and Filipinos made up a large part of “the movement”.

abobo on November 29, 2011 at 12:37 PM

There was not much of a camp for the cops to clear out here in Los Angeles as the video shows you. The cops could have done so if the mayor had not chickened out. The media presence alone had to be close to that of the left over Occupy crowd.

Blue Collar Todd on November 29, 2011 at 12:39 PM

diditagain on November 29, 2011 at 12:33 PM

All humans respond the same way to unfulfilled threats. Anyone with any kind of sense should know they must be prepared to actually execute the threat before making the threat. Yet Nutter will probably be surprised when things get much worse because he failed to follow through on earlier threats.

Occupy American Airlines next, for trying to survive under the weight of unions but ultimately having to file for bankruptcy?

tomg51 on November 29, 2011 at 12:59 PM

Thanks for the long-range heads up. The 1% will reschedule their shipments to avoid being tied up in port on that date and minimize risk of damage/theft of their cargo. Minor inconvenience to Apple, and other goods merchants while the kiddies vent.

AH_C on November 29, 2011 at 1:01 PM

Actually, Christmas merchandise has been in the states for at least a month.

Yeah, so all those ships that pull into LA/Long Beach loaded with containers are delivering caviar and limousines for the 1%? A one day port shutdown will impact 100′s of thousands of people – jobs, income, expenses, inconvenience, missed opportunities.

As for “the work opportunities of … people who unload ships at the docks” you might want to look into the longshoremen’s union and their recent criminal acts. The OWS thugs are just joining up with another group of thugs they know are sympathetic.

Crawford on November 29, 2011 at 11:52 AM

Correct, but that doesn’t lessen the negative impact of a shutdown on hundreds of thousands of working class truckers, warehousemen, customer service reps, clerks, etc., as well as thousands of small businesses and millions of consumers and end users.

The idiots in LA gave them a four-day notice.

Daryl Gates is spinning in his grave. He’d have fed them to the Scoopers.

JammieWearingFool on November 29, 2011 at 1:31 PM

The Tea Party has been marked by an orderly and effective grassroots mobilization. OWS has been marked by chaos and violence. This contrast is due to the fact that the Tea Partiers have a firm understanding of what caused the recession and how to fix it, while OWS is clueless about both.

The Tea Partiers understand that the recession was intitiated by the Community Reinvestment Act, and compounded by average Americans and Wall St. taking advantage of a (artificial) boom housing market. They also know that Obama has tried to use the recession as an excuse to ram through Liberal big government policies.

Meanwhile, the OWS protestors bought the media spin that the recession was caused by de-regulation and Capitalism run amok. They may be disappointed in Obama, but it’s certainly not because they think he’s used the recession as an excuse to go hard Left on fiscal policy.

I’m sure that there’s plenty of OWS who are hurting financially, lots of young college grads who can’t find jobs. They ought to be blaming Obama’s failed policies, but these are people who can never bring themselves to believe that being too far to the Left is a bad thing. Nor can they believe that moving to the Right is a good thing.

So they’re flailing about, deluding themselves into thinking that they’re starting some sort of revolution. But all they’re doing is showing that while they know there’s a problem, they don’t know what the problem is, or how to fix it.

Like spoiled teenagers mad as hell at their parents to think they should be responsible, clean their rooms, mow the lawn, pick up after themselves and help around the house doing a few chores all the while being fed and clothed and educated by their parents. I too was angry with my parents and hated my tough teachers at school but as I matured threw my teen years I thanked my toughest teachers and also thanked my parents for holding me to the line. We tax payers are the hated ones now by the ones that do not pay their taxes but want just about everything free.

So then we should assume that those who were left wanted to be arrested. They should have been granted their wish. Now the next deadline will probably be laughed at.

Blue Collar Todd on November 29, 2011 at 2:33 PM

Sounds to me like this “movement” is no longer a cute little college thing–the union goons have taken over. The intimidation in the next year will grow worse. Allies like Al-Lay’s Tony Villar will continue to give their tacit permission.

All in a day’s work for the Alinsky Kid in the WH.
