Obama’s not-so-secret weapon

posted at 4:45 pm on November 27, 2011 by Karl

According to the AP’s Julie Pace, it might just be the Sheriff:

A year from Election Day, Democrats are crafting a campaign strategy for Vice President Joe Biden that targets the big three political battlegrounds: Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Florida, states where Biden might be more of an asset to President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign than the president himself.

Doug Powers goes right to the Biden Blooper Reel; I’ll simply note that last month, the AP’s Julie Pace was reporting that Michelle Obama might be her husband’s not-so-secret weapon. I don’t mean to pick on Ms. Pace in particular. After all, the Tribune Co. and New York Times were writing similar pieces before the 2010 midterms — and we know how well that turned out. TIME did the Michelle O story in 2010; NBC’s Andrea Mitchell joined Pace for 2011.

The obvious cheap shot would be that Obama’s not-so-secret weapon is the esatblishment media. But it’s not just bias, it’s laziness, as evidenced by all the stories written about Laura Bush as a secret weapon, despite a similar lack of evidence.

It may be more useful to read the Biden spin in light of the larger debate on the left between analysts like William Galston, who thinks Obama’s path to victory still runs through the Rust Belt, and those like Ruy Teixeira, who argues that demographics make Virginia, Colorado and North Carolina more appealing targets for Obama. Alec MacGillis thinks Obama is adopting the latter strategy, but sees it as a false choice. But maybe it just looks like Obama is focusing on the latter group of states because the best Obama can do in the Rust Belt right now is to send Joe Biden.

How many people will Biden lock in a closet in order to spin a story of his “success”?

onlineanalyst on November 27, 2011 at 4:53 PM

He can connect with the bad hair community.

NoDonkey on November 27, 2011 at 4:57 PM

I suppose that Biden’s appearances are supposed to be a “big F’n deal,” according to these strategists. “Man, it is storybook, I tell ya.”

Obama’s secret weapon could end up being GOP primary voters.

Mark1971 on November 27, 2011 at 5:03 PM

Biden is Obama’s secret weapon? You’re pulling my leg. On the other hand, Biden will probably ask voters in swing states to pull his finger.

radjah shelduck on November 27, 2011 at 5:04 PM

Not even his village wants this idiot back.

You can’t tell me secret service doesn’t have a bell around his neck just to keep track of him.

Biden, the face of smart power.

Hey pal, I’ve been campaigning on TV since ’29! Now there’s only one word for that: vast experience.–Joe Biden

Drat, you beat me to it. ;-)

Seriously, if Joe the Mouth is The One’s secret weapon for here in Ohio, He’s likely to get smacked down even more thoroughly than our most recent ex-Governor, Ted Strickland.

Who, I might remind you all, promised that if he were re-elected last year, he was going to spend all of ’11 and ’12 doing “everything within (his) power” to ensure that The One carried Ohio.

Well, that isn’t going to happen, short of a palace coup in Columbus. Governor Kasich isn’t exactly a fan of Himself, His minions, or His grand plans (or version of reality).

Sending Joe here is sort of like sending Charlie McCarthy to Cambridge to explain the Theory of Relativity.

Minus Edgar Bergen.

/I.e., almost too asinine to be really funny

cheers

Just think, the same political organization that’s telling Obama it’s time to campaign instead of govern, picked Joe Biden for Vice-President. Obama was a shoe-in when he ran last time. No record, young, articulate black guy, and an adoring press. The reason the press got after Sarah Palin so much was they thought she could ruin the plan of electing Obama.

Now Obama, quite simply, has to run on his record. He’s still trying to vote present, but the difference is that he can vote present all he wants, he’s still responsible. Joe Biden wasn’t a political liability, to a guy that was a shoe-in, he may, however, not be an asset for someone with the record Obama has.

bflat879 on November 27, 2011 at 10:35 PM

Joe Biden has always been a joke. He’s arrogant like Obama, but with less reticence to brag about how high his IQ supposedly is. And yet, every time in his life when something important was on the line like getting a law degree or running for President, he has chosen to plagiarize the words of others instead of relying on his big ol’ brain.

In 1988 he ran for President as one of the mob of Democrats even the mainstream press derided as “the Seven Dwarfs.” In his first major speech, he not only plagiarized the exact text of a speech by far-Left British Labor MP Neal Kinnock, he even stole the biographical paragraphs including Kinnock’s touching description of his father’s hardships as a coal miner. Naturally, it was quickly noticed that the life story wasn’t Biden’s, and the incident killed his candidacy before it really got going.

Had Biden gotten away with the theft, whose speeches would he have stolen later to top it?

It has come to it that in order to be a dedicated Democrat, one must first be a liar, a thief, and a fool.

Adjoran on November 27, 2011 at 10:57 PM

Why don’t they make a Lego Book of Biden, too?

bloggless on November 27, 2011 at 11:05 PM

Unfortunately here in PA there are people who actually admire Biden. I’ve overheard them, and heard them talk about it directly. What must their lives be like to go about the world with minds so shriveled up and bereft of the minimum critical faculties? You’d almost feel sorry for them…if they weren’t allowed to vote and assist in bringing the country down around our ears. And they’re Democrats which means they’ll get to vote three, four, five times if they manage to show up for the shuttle bus. They’ll have incentive. They’ll get free cigarettes too.
