OWS sympathizer threatens to murder Nikki Haley
posted at 9:45 am on November 26, 2011 by Jazz Shaw
Ah, free speech is grand, isn’t it? Well… yes. But with certain limits. Verum Serum takes note of one couragious first amendment (and, apparently Occupy Wall Street) supporter who chose to explore those limits in a rather ill fated and short lived way. Seeing that South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley had “allowed” police to arrest some members of Occupy Columbia, he did what any rational, concerned citizen would do. He jumped on his Facebook page and threatened to murder her.
COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) – A South Carolina man is accused of threatening the life of Gov. Nikki Haley on Facebook, but he claims he was only making a point about free speech.
When 26-year-old Nathan Shafer heard about the arrests of 19 Occupy Columbia members outside the State House last Wednesday, he did what lots of people do when they get angry — he vented about it on the Internet. He saw Gov. Haley’s Facebook post about the arrests and Haley’s comment that she “appreciate[s] freedom of speech,” and that’s when authorities say Shafer crossed the line.“I hope someone murders you before I do,” Shafer said he commented on the post. “How’s that for freedom of speech?”
The next day, Shafer says two State Law Enforcement Division agents visited him in Charlotte to discuss the comment. Shafer says he retracted and deleted his statement, promised he wasn’t serious and apologized to the Haley family.
Verum Serum has the clip of Mr. Shafer’s arrest at the link above, for your heartwarming, holiday video needs. What happens to him next, though, is still up in the air.
As the KLTV reporter notes, another person once similarly threatened President Obama in a similar fashion and wound up not being convicted. (Need a reference on that. UPDATE: Here’s the link to that story, hat tip to Moe Lane.) Either way, there have always been limits on free speech. Mr. Shafer’s claims that this was “an exercise” in his first amendment rights will very likely fall on deaf ears. If he’d been a bit more obtuse in referencing possible violence and focused more on complaining about the governor’s policies, he’d likely stand a fairly good chance of walking. But hoping, “somebody murders you before I do” is a significant jump over any lines or gray areas.
So many villages. So many idiots. So little time.
(Edit: Speaking of village idiots, it would be nice if I’d spelled the title correctly. sympathizer. Huh. Must get more coffee.)

This certified schmuck is obviously unfamiliar with the general common sense concept of why you don’t yell “FIRE!” in a crowded theater!
Take note of the emphasis on common sense. It’s obvious this goof is lacking that trait big time!

Del Dolemonte on November 26, 2011 at 10:08 AM
The liberals and their propaganda machine – known as the MSM – spent much of the previous two years falsely condemning the Tea Party as a potentially violent, hate-filled mob. Then, a violent hate-filled OWS mob actually showed up… and the liberals, along their propaganda machine, embraced it.
But there is no media bias.

Just for fun, go to The State dot com, South Carolina’s paper of record and try to find this story. Currently featured there: the upcoming football game, the rising cost of college, why we need to protect the salamander and post offices and how Haley’s husband wants a wine chiller.
Can’t find “The Republican Governor threatened by an OWS-sympathizer”? Click on the News link, go past the Haley-chef scandal, past the story about Haley ignoring the Senate … wait, it’s not there at all. It was buried days ago. Which is why the paper is dying, typical liberal mouthpiece in the middle of a deep red state.
BTW, the perp is from North Carolina (Charlotte).

Now if that Communi…er, Occupier had decided to come to Wisconsin, nothing would be done. One can threaten to kill the (Republican) governor and as long as one does it in Dane County, the (Democrat) district attorney won’t charge you.
If you’re wondering about Katherine Windels, the unhinged teacher who threatened the Republican state senators via e-mail back in March, she’s going to get a jury trial (in Dane County) on 2 felony counts of bomb scares and 2 misdemeanor counts of e-mailing a threat of bodily harm in the middle of January. Prediction – she walks on all 4.

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2011/07/online-call-to-shoot-obama-was-free-speech-not-a-crime-appeals-court-rules.html
What the judges stated was that while he called for Obama to be shot he personally didn’t say he was going to do it, so it is not an accurate comparison because this guy said he would do so himself is someone else didn’t.

Yeah, this story received approximately 30 seconds on one of the local television stations. This dude’s sound bite was nearly incoherent, which precisely mirrors the whole movement. I drove past the capitol Wednesday and there were MAYBE 10 “occupiers” in attendance. It’s a sad, sad little group.
ceegardave on November 26, 2011 at 10:25 AM
I live in SC and it was covered quite a bit here. The rest of the country could care less about our Governor. I guess just like I could care less about the Governor of California or Ohio.

In a freak of nature, the entire Occupy contingent arrests itself:
You are under arrest
“MIC CHECK”
“YOU ARE UNDER ARREST”
You have the right to remain silent.
“YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO REMAIN SILENT”
Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law
“ANYTHING YOU SAY CAN AND WILL BE USED AGAINST YOU IN A COURT OF LAW”

So, when there’s class warfare and people are going after the top 1%, what makes liberals believe their 1% will be left out of it? Not only are the Michael Moore’s of this world likely to get it, but most of the Hollywood crowd are eligible.
It seems to me I read that there are more millionaire Democrats in Congress than Republicans, or at least Democrats have more money there. You sort of have to be careful about that glass house thing, eh?
bflat879 on November 26, 2011 at 10:38 AM
Nope, not the “they’re both the same” this time cliche, FS. Bush had much, much more visuals depicting harm coming to his than any other president in my lifetime.

Actually I found both sets of searches useful and providing a ray of hope.
Mostly in the number of occurrences of the word “arrest” in the first page of both searches.
Go to jail, go directly to jail, do not pass go, do not allow this to continue undeterred to allow other nutjobs to go further in their psychotic violent fantasies.
I’m good with that outcome and hope it continues.
gekkobear on November 26, 2011 at 5:05 PM
OK, point of logic here. If I am the member of a “movement” which has open membership, the behavior of other members does not make me a hypocrite.
For example, many members of the civil rights movement advocated non-violence. Others were violent in support of civil rights. Is that hypocrisy? Of course not. Look it up.

VIOLENT Occupy Carolina Sympathizer Threatens to Kill SC Governor Nikki Haley
Added: 5 hours ago Occurred On: Nov-25-2011

South Carolina’s libertarian/Tea Party Republican Governor Nikki Haley has just had her life threatened by an Occupy activist.
**************************************************************
On her Facebook page, Governor Haley posted a comment that she fully supported the right to free speech of Occupy protesters. Though, citing safety concerns she recently ordered Occupy protesters off the state grounds of the capitol.
In response to recent arrests, 26-year-old bearded, pony-tail Nathan Shafer of Charlotte, NC posted to Haley’s Facebook comments section. KLTV reports:
“I hope someone murders you before I do,” Shafer said he commented on the post. “How’s that for freedom of speech?”

I used to think something like this about Phil Donohue, the talk show host, and we all know how liberal he is.
I think the point that fastestslug isn’t getting is that the have no real examples of violence at the tea parties, except that which was committed by leftists in the midst… They don’t get that we have been watching democrat and liberal media hypocrisy for years, and it isn’t getting any better.
They have nothing at all but to behave worse than a 12 year old.
