Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on November 25, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

One way in which Barack Obama attempted to demonstrate that he would do a better job than his predecessor was to reinstate the American Bar Association to rate judicial appointments, which meant that those getting an “unqualified” rating would not advance. George W. Bush ended the decades-old practice, claiming that the ABA abused its prerogative to make political attacks on conservative jurists; the ABA continued to publish ratings on nominees, while the White House simply ignored them.  Obama insinuated that Bush made that decision to push unqualified judges onto the federal bench, and promised that his appointments would pass muster.

How’s that working out?  Er …

The American Bar Association has secretly declared a significant number of President Obama’s potential judicial nominees “not qualified,” slowing White House efforts to fill vacant judgeships — and nearly all of the prospects given poor ratings were women or members of a minority group, according to interviews.

The White House has chosen not to nominate any person the bar association deemed unqualified, so their identities and negative ratings have not been made public. But the association’s judicial vetting committee has opposed 14 of the roughly 185 potential nominees the administration asked it to evaluate, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The number of Obama prospects deemed “not qualified” already exceeds the total number opposed by the group during the eight-year administrations of Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush; the rejection rate is more than three and a half times as high as it was under either of the previous two presidencies, documents and interviews show.

Hey, this presidenting isn’t as easy as it looks, huh?  Looks like the most “unqualified” person in this loop is the one in the Oval Office.

Note: I will be going on vacation this weekend, so the OOTD feature will take a hiatus until December 5th.  Be sure to keep sending me tips, though!

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

I’m surprised he even bothered to give one, considering Thanksgiving is not a Muslim holiday. But even so, he managed to leave God out of it, which no doubt proves what a devout Christian he is (as his defenders in the MSM are always telling us).

I will starting on Sunday. I’m going out of the country on a cruise, so it will be impossible for me to “plug in” during the week anyway — which is one of the reasons I decided to go on one. Otherwise, the temptation would be too strong.

Hey Ed, most cruise ships have the Internet. However, it costs about 40 cents a minute if you buy a 250 minute package.

karenhasfreedom on November 25, 2011 at 9:19 AM

Why is this considered an Obama goof? It’s brilliant on his part and the masses of idiot voters will have no idea that the ABA is a leftist pocket pal kneejerk acronym. The media will excoriate any who dissapprove of any leftist judicial candidate using the “objectivity” rating of the ABA as the weapon to bludgeon the happless GOP -who really won’t fight hard anyway.

Please -let’s stop calling the man inept. It is not his stupidity that is destroying America -it is his clear, well considered, and well aimed destruction. Hardky the mark of an idiot!

Well, obviously the ABA has devolved into a bunch of racist, homophobic misogynists. A constitutional scholar like our president would surely nominate only the most highly qualified wise Latinas and softball-savvy justices to render socially-progressive judgement beyond the comprehension of ossified white men, no?

You confuse the lack of verbal intelligence with his ability to acheive his goal of destroying America – while pretending to want to save her. He has shown brilliance in deflecting his evil -desguising it as ineptness.

Add up his destruction – his succcess at his mission of dismantling captitalism/family/destroying medical care/conning worship from the Catholic left at Notre Dame/ignoring law (healthcare mandates, with abortion/illegal immigration/gathering e-mail names for his enemy’s list/sidestepping congress(out loud) while he’s still believed to have messiah-like qualities by half the nation.

Don’t call the man an idiot -he is in position to finish the havoc in a second term and the inept/fearful GOP refuses to attack him and take him down.

The biggest mistake one can make is to underestimate the ability of your enemy. Folks who think he’s stupid do just that.

Don L on November 25, 2011 at 9:46 AM

I’ll likely not vote for this one when the time comes. As I read it, he hasn’t overridden the ABA… just tried to push his liberal cronies through.

Kudo’s to the ABA for nixing 14 of them.

toenail on November 25, 2011 at 9:48 AM

Joe Pags, substituting today for Glenn Beck, is deconstructing Øbama’s Thanksgiving address, comparing it to George Washington’s, to show how far at variance with America Øbama actually is. Good work, Joe Pags!

Hey Barry, don’t community organize me, bro.

Obama is not deliberately trying to destroy the US. The fool thinks that he is saving it. The problem is that the entire paradigm that he is using to evaluate his actions was created by people who intended it to destroy the US.
The guy is probably just as intelligent as our previous presidents, but that doesn’t completely protect one from ultimately playing the fool.

I loathe obaka…

ladyingray on November 25, 2011 at 10:48 AM

Something’s not adding up here. If the ABA is just a leftist front, why is the “unqualified” rate higher for the Obama Administration’s proposed appointees? It appears that they might be doing their job, and that affirmative action alumni are finally being evaluated without that advantage. As to the administration, I don’t think you can call this an “Obamateurism” just because they have a high rejection rate. It might be possible that they have a sincere interest in screening out unqualified judges, and not just a political motive.

Of course, there’s the whole history of this administration appointing political hacks, from Holder on down, arguing against my rosy theory. But, of itself, this doesn’t seem to be a fair Obamateurism. If we have to rely on his tainted history to provide the context, then everything he does should be considered an Obamateurism.

I know that’s tempting . . . .

Zero will declare that his plan is to go around the Bar Assn. much as he like to go around Congress since the Bar doesn’t want to get things done.

Kissmygrits on November 25, 2011 at 3:09 PM

Ed, the “official” Thanksgiving Proclamation from the Oval Office this year does not in any way mitigate the Resident’s lack of humility nor offer any acknowledgement of God on his part. It would seem that he honors God, but a close reading shows that all he does is recognize such honors rendered by past Presidents:

When President George Washington proclaimed our country’s first Thanksgiving, he praised a generous and knowing God for shepherding our young Republic through its uncertain beginnings. Decades later, President Abraham Lincoln looked to the divine to protect those who had known the worst of civil war, and to restore the Nation “to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility, and union.”

Nowhere in his proclamation, nor in his prepared Saturday radio address text, does he speficially cite God as the source of any reason for gratitude on our parts. It is the same weak tea always employed by the Godless when attempting to appease the “clingers”.

He is a sham of a man, a sham of a politician, and a horrible sham of a leader. It is a shame that we have allowed him to attain this position, and will be a greater shame if we allow it to continue.

Ed, the “official” Thanksgiving Proclamation from the Oval Office this year …

Freelancer on November 25, 2011 at 3:14 PM

Our community-organizer-in-chief said the first Thanksgiving was a “celebration of community”.

That is pure Marxist bullsh*t, pure community-organizer-speak. The first Thanksgiving was to give thanks to the Creator for blessings bestowed. “Celebration of community” had nothing to do with it.

Hey Barry, you lie.
