Happy Thanksgiving

posted at 9:00 am on November 24, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth.
 Worship the LORD with gladness;
   come before him with joyful songs.
Know that the LORD is God.
   It is he who made us, and we are his;
   we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving
   and his courts with praise;
   give thanks to him and praise his name.

For the LORD is good and his love endures forever;
   his faithfulness continues through all generations. — Psalm 100

From all of us here at Hot Air, Townhall, and Salem Communications — may you have a blessed and joyous day of giving thanks and spending time with your friends and family.

Well done, Ed!
The first Thanksgiving wasn’t about the Pilgrims thanking the Indians, even though that’s what they teach (or at least imply) in school nowadays. It was about giving thanks to God. And the Thanksgiving proclamations by Presidents George Washington & Abraham Lincoln were about giving thanks to God. So Ed, you’ve continued this tradition well today by setting aside time to express gratitude to our Creator.

We have a small patch on our vests in BACA (aka B.ikers A.gainst C.hild A.buse) that says it ALL:

“It AINT about YOU It AINT about ME It’s ALL about the KIDS”

Which can easily be morphed to apply this DAY:

“It AINT about the Feast It AINT about the football It’s ALLLLLLL about what we
ALL have to be THANKFUL FOR!”

Respectfully,

Katfish
Vice President
Brazos Valley BACA

“I won’t give up, shut up, or let up, until I have stayed up, stored up, prayed up, paid up, and showed up for all wounded children. I must go until I drop, ride until I give out, and work till He stops me.”

Happy Thanksgiving, Ed and fellow Hot Air pilgrims!

A tradition we started years ago when the kids were little, and we weren’t going to one of the grandparents’ houses for the first time, is making a little “turkey” for everyone. I’ll be making Cornish hens with all the traditional Thanksgiving trimmings. One of the benefits of the little birds is they don’t take as long to roast, so I’ll be taking them out of the brine later.

The pies and desserts are all made, soon the breakfast pizza will be in the oven for the brunch stragglers. The dogs are on high alert for company because I was cleaning furiously yesterday, lol. They know something is up. We are so grateful to have family and extended family here (and on the way.) We are truly blessed.

I’m thankful that we’re in Texas-we were in Chicago a year ago, that I have a job that I’m working today-that I didn’t have a year ago…and that the coworker who supports both Ron Paul AND the occupy movement and who’s admitted that he’s trying to harass me in to quitting WON’T be there today!
Being thankful for my family, friend-I mean friends- cats, and HA goes w/out saying.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of my Hot Air friends!

Here is a link to George Washington’s Thanksgiving Proclamation from 1789, in case you want to share it with the children at your Thanksgiving dinner.

Since it is highly unlikely that public schools are teaching the kids about Washington’s proclamation (shhh…it’s like religious or sumpthin), it is up to families to fill in the gaps.

If you click on the “Page image” link you can see the proclamation in George Washington’s own handwriting, which I think is pretty cool.

SlaveDog on November 24, 2011 at 1:52 PM

I was born into a bubble in time. A pause from the war, disease, starvation, slavery & ignorance which has, for the last 10,000 years, defined the history of man. Historically & geographically speaking I live on an island of freedom & plenty in a sea of oppression & want.
In another time or place my wife would have died while giving birth to my first son, who would have died with her. My son’s asthma quite possilbly would have killed him by now. My other son’s legal blindness would left him with no chance at a successful future. I would have died at 22 of appendicitis.
For my life, my security, my family, my freedom, my daily bread, the roof over my head, my salvation and so much more, I thank my God.

Happy Thanksgiving all! And don’t forget to give God thanks for his wonderful blessings to all of us. Even the poorest among us are among the richest on earth. Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord. Pray it stays that way.

Speaking of prayer and Thanksgiving, here’s President George Washington’s proclamation of Thanksgiving. Lincoln may have made it an annual holiday, but Washington made this proclamation:

WHEREAS it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favour; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me “to recommend to the people of the United States a DAY OF PUBLIC THANKSGIVING and PRAYER, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:”
NOW THEREFORE, I do recommend and assign THURSDAY, the TWENTY-SIXTH DAY of NOVEMBER next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed;– for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enable to establish Constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted;– for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge;– and, in general, for all the great and various favours which He has been pleased to confer upon us.
And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to pardon our national and other transgressions — to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually — to render our national government a blessing to all the people, by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed — to protect and guide all Sovereigns and Nations (especially such as have shewn [sic] kindness onto us) and to bless them with good government, peace, and concord — To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the encrease [sic] of science among them and us — and generally to grant unto all Mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best.
Given under my hand at the City of New York
the third day of October in the year of our Lord 1789.

I’m trying something new with the turkey, 400 degrees but you flip it, 45 minutes breast down, 15 minutes for each wing and then breast up until it reaches 160 degrees. Hopefully while it “breathes” for 30 minutes I can put the rest of the stuff that goes into the oven to cook. Knowing my history, I am not hopeful.

My husband got impatient with the turkey not browning fast enough, and turned him on to broil at the end. He just doesn’t understand there is the art aspect to Turkeys. I like to get them to that just right stage of golden brown. I take a photo of the turkey every year.

Happy thanksgiving everyone– lots to be thankful for this year.

Gabby Giffords made it to Davis Monthan AFB in Tucson to dish out a dinner for the troops there– good for her!

But the article made me scratch my head. (emphasis mine)

Giffords was shot on January 8 at an event for constituents at a Tucson supermarket. College dropout Jared Loughner has been charged in the shooting spree that killed six people and wounded 13, including Giffords.

College dropout? As if he had stayed in college he wouldn’t have gone on a killing spree? How about “Raving Lunatic Jared Loughner” or “Dangerously Delusional Schizophrenic Jared Loughner”? Why “College dropout”?
