Quotes of the day

posted at 10:53 pm on November 18, 2011 by Allahpundit

“Now that our campaign to rebuild the America we love is gaining momentum, those who want to see us fail are on the attack, digging through Newt’s past to try and stop us.

“Newt, Callista and our campaign welcome the opportunity to tell the truth about Newt and set the record straight about Newt’s positions on the issues as well as his record in public life and as a private citizen.

“We’ve set up this page to arm you with answers to the attacks.”

***

“The 68-year-old Georgian told all comers to bring it on.

“‘If I can’t survive a few weeks of the news media, then I definitely can’t survive being the president,” he said. “If we can cheerfully get through this and answer in a way that the American people are satisfied with, then I deserve the nomination.’…

“‘I really see Mitt and I as co-front-runners,’ said Gingrich, adding that the nomination battle is ‘going to come down to Mitt and me.’”

***

“Ann Trimble-Ray, a Republican Central Committee county chairwoman in Iowa who considers herself socially conservative, thinks that Gingrich’s ‘past issues with marital infidelity’ may have ‘kept folks from jumping on a Gingrich bandwagon.’ But as Hawkeye voters have whipped through other candidates, a narrowing field has forced them to reconsider. Furthermore, while social conservatives want a candidate who has promised ‘to vote right’ on the issues they care about, Trimble-Ray says, they also want someone who is ‘best positioned to go up against Barack Obama in the general election.’

“In evangelical stronghold South Carolina, there is similar openness to Gingrich’s being the nominee. Oran P. Smith, president and CEO of the Palmetto Family Council, notes that most evangelicals have at some moment in their lives ‘turned away from their bad ways and moved forward toward a Christian worldview’ and may thus be sympathetic to Gingrich’s journey…

“‘Character counts and it should count, and we want to see leaders who have the right moral compass,’ Concerned Women for America’s Nance reflects, but she notes that there is also ‘room for redemption.’”

***

“Gingrich’s campaign did not respond to a request for an explanation. I suppose he could say that he did not agree with all the policies of his own center or that the mandate envisioned by this proposal would be a state-imposed obligation, not a federally imposed one (such as the ‘Obamacare mandate’ Gingrich so fervently opposes). But a 2007 column he posted on the Center’s website affords him no wiggle room whatsoever. In that article, Gingrich wrote,

“‘In order to make coverage more accessible, Congress must do more, including passing legislation to: establish a national health insurance marketplace by giving individuals the freedom to shop for insurance plans across state lines; provide low-income families with $1,000 in direct contributions to a health savings account, along with a $2,000 advanced tax credit to purchase an HSA-eligible high-deductible health plan; make premiums for these plans tax deductible; provide tax rebates to small businesses that contribute to their employees’ HSAs; extend and expand grant funding to high-risk pools across the country; and require anyone who earns more than $50,000 a year to purchase health insurance or post a bond.’”

***

“When it comes to global warming, Gingrich’s position seems to have changed faster than the climate.

“‘I don’t know if he’s just being opportunistic or of he’s had a real change of heart, but it is a bit disconcerting,’ said Jim DiPeso, the policy director for Republicans for Environmental Protection.

“In the more than 30 years since Gingrich was first elected to the House, he has said there is both sufficient evidence to prove the climate is changing and also that there is no conclusive proof. He supported a cap-and-trade program to limit carbon emissions and then later testified against it before a Congressional committee…

“‘There is no compelling evidence on either side to either rule it out or rule in it,’ Gingrich’s spokesman R.C. Hammond said of the candidate’s position on global warming and the impact of man-made pollution. ‘But at the end of the day he’s somebody who does care about the environment.’”

***

“[I]t’s no surprise that in the endless rounds of American Idol-fied GOP debates this year, Gingrich appears to be running as much for philosopher king as for president—or at least as the world’s most interesting dinner party guest. The Gingrich style mixes apocalyptic fear-mongering with sweeping historical narrative and frequent digressions into high-concept daydreams (‘Why not aspire to build a real Jurassic Park?’ he mused in his 1999 book To Renew America), all delivered in the tone of an elder professor making the rounds on the business consulting circuit…

“Since leaving elected office, however, his approach to Washington has relied heavily on his insider status, which he has used to cash in. Starting just five months after he left Congress, the former House speaker earned his consulting firm between $1.6 and $1.8 million in fees from government-backed mortgage giant Freddie Mac, according to a Bloomberg News report earlier this week. Was he paid for lobbying, like so many ex-legislators? Not at all, he claims. He was merely a policy consultant whose role was to dispense advice in his capacity as a ‘historian.’

“Gingrich would have us believe that the mortgage backer paid seven figures for his wide-ranging erudition and the pleasure of his company. Yet given how long the media have happily lapped up this self-appointed philosopher king’s antics, is it any surprise that he fully expects us to buy this idea? It may be that no one believes in Newt Gingrich’s inevitability more than Newt Gingrich himself.”

***

“Gingrich may not follow the Bachmann-Perry-Cain trajectory of rapid rise and rapid fall. He is a far more experienced national politician than they. He’s a familiar figure. It’s not as if, like Bachmann, he’s making a favorable first impression that will then be qualified, or, like Perry, that the idea of the candidate will be very different from the reality, or that, like Herman Cain, he seems a breath of fresh air. Voters who have warmed to Gingrich in the last few months could of course still have second thoughts, and his rise may stall and reverse. It would indeed be surprising if he doesn’t now hit some bumps in the road. But he could be formidable…

And even if Gingrich fades, let’s not assume it’s over. Bachmann and Santorum could still have a run in Iowa. If they continue to trail badly, it’s not out of the question that someone else could still present himself in mid-December to the citizens of Iowa (Hi there, Mike Huckabee! Hello, Sarah Palin!). Or, if Iowa (January 3), New Hampshire (January 10) and South Carolina (January 21) produce fragmented results, and the state of the race is disheartening to Republicans, a late January entry by another candidate isn’t out of the question, either. Couldn’t Jeb Bush or Marco Rubio win the January 31 Florida primary as a write-in candidate in such circumstances?

“With a splintered field in a turbulent time in an Internet age, there are more possible outcomes in today’s politics than are dreamt of in the philosophy of inevitability.”

That still gives Newt a leg up over Romney; at least Newt is honest about his dishonesty, while Romney is dishonest about his dishonesty.

Having said that, I support Ron Paul and Bachmann.

Romney didn’t have to sell himself nearly as much. He owes far fewer favors. I would also take a chance on his technocratic amoral “management style” rather than 300 boondoggles Newt’s creative mind will come up with, all paid for by the taxpayers.

This make him worse than Dodd and Obama. This make him part of the problem with Washington. He’s not going to clean it up. He’s one of the reasons Washington is as dirty as it is. He’s a hypocrite whose making the GOP look more stupid by the day.

What doesn’t? That a government-esque might hire a private sector consulting firm for strategic planning and outside the box ideas to meet whatever challenges they face? Yeah that never happens.

As for your question, I already answered this as have others. As a consultant, he was asked to help solve whatever the different items they went to him for. He used his knowledge of the system and his understanding of history to formulate solutions for them.

He was not a lobbyist.

You’ve decided that he’s guilty regardless. So far, I don’t see evidence of it other than from wishcasters such as yourself.

If something comes out that proves him a liar, we’ll deal with it then. But I don’t do the guilty until proven innocent schtick. Sorry. I’m more of a Trust but Verify person myself.

Some of you dullards actually believe Freddie Mac paid Newt $1.8 million for his knowledge? That’s cute.

What, they don’t have Google at Freddie Mac? Expensive history lesson!

I don’t keep track, but I suspect that at least some of y’all are the same folks who swore Palin was getting in, thought Trump was cool, believed Bachmann really could pray the gay away, assumed Perry was the hero the advance PR men said he was, thought Cain could run a “different sort of campaign,” and now conveniently forget what Newt has said of conservatives over and over again over the years when it suited his purposes – most recently when endorsing Dede Scuzzyfuzzy in NY-23.

It wasn’t enough to endorse the liberal Republican, he couldn’t resist denigrating the conservatives who supported Doug Hoffman. We were idiots, fringe nuts, couldn’t see the big picture. Then Dede endorsed the Democrat and Newt had to walk it back.

Then Paul Ryan’s budget which passed the House with a CBO projection of $5.4 trillion in deficit reduction over the ten year window (Super Committee can’t even get $1.2 tril done), which would have actually been a good first step to fiscal sanity, was derided by Gingrich as “right wing social engineering.” Then he walked that back.

Don’t you know he will stab us in the back again as soon as it suits him? Don’t you remember why Republicans forced him out as Speaker?

Do you hate Romney so much you will run to a known liar and turncoat opportunist?

I would just think that if I am “hiring” an employee (POTUS) for my company (USA) for a specific need my company requires (fix economy) I would look at every applicants resume and see which had the MOST experience to fill my specific need (fix economy). There is not another persons resume I would need to look at after reading and interviewing Romney. He is the ONLY qualified candidate for the job I need accomplished having fulfilled my need in PAST employments. All the other applicants are good people but they do not fill my specific need and they are just distractions to what I need fixed at my company.

This is what I believe MOST people outside of HotAir posters are looking for…

g2825m on November 19, 2011 at 1:52 AM

I can understand why Romney supporters would prefer to avoid discussing his past.

FloatingRock on November 19, 2011 at 1:51 AM

I am fine with going over Romney’s record. Since he made a internal switch in approx 2005 on certain issues and others he has ALWAYS believed, which issues do you want to go over that he has not been conservative on AND BACKED UP BY SIGNED LEGISLATION? and has not wavered on since?

Romney’s record:
Cut taxes in MA – Check

Closed loopholes and raised fees as Reagan did – Check

Voted pro-life bills as GOV – Check

Voted and eased 2nd Amendment bills in MA – Check

Against illegal immigration – Check

Signed bill against Illegal Immigration Recv tuition breaks – Check

Build the complete fence along the border – Check

For Defense of Marriage Act – Check

For Cut, Cap, and Balance – Check

Pro expansion of the military and keeping GITMO open – Check

Drilling in ANWR – Check

Investing in new technologies for oil – Check

Develop energy technology like nuclear or liquefied coal – Check

Do you hate Romney so much you will run to a known liar and turncoat opportunist?

Adjoran on November 19, 2011 at 1:46 AM

Your double entendre backfired on you.

FloatingRock on November 19, 2011 at 1:59 AM

Well didn’t Newt strap his first dying wife on top of HIS car and then took her first to the local notary to sign a will leaving everything to Newt and then to his second wedding so that would be the last thing she saw?

Igor R. on November 19, 2011 at 1:05 AM

Hey Ignoramus, Newt’s EX IS NOT DEAD. I’m sick of your self righteous BS. Talk to his daughter you putrid ass. This is why nobody runs. They don’t want their a** holes examined by Sh*ts like U.

jollybird on November 19, 2011 at 2:02 AM

Some of you dullards actually believe Freddie Mac paid Newt $1.8 million for his knowledge? That’s cute.

Adjoran on November 19, 2011 at 1:46 AM

Until you have proof otherwise, shut your pie hole.

clancy_wiggum on November 19, 2011 at 2:31 AM

I prefer Ron Paul over Gary Johnson, he’s more conservative.

If Marxists are on the far left and corporatists are on the far right, Ron Paul is center right while Gary Johnson is center left.

It is with regret and unflinching moral certainty that I announce that Barnhardt Capital Management has ceased operations

Everything changed just a few short weeks ago. A firm, led by a crony of the Obama regime, stole all of the non-margined cash held by customers of his firm. Let’s not sugar-coat this or make this crime seem “complex” and “abstract” by drowning ourselves in six-dollar words and uber-technical jargon. Jon Corzine STOLE the customer cash at MF Global. Knowing Jon Corzine, and knowing the abject lawlessness and contempt for humanity of the Marxist Obama regime and its cronies, this is not really a surprise. What was a surprise was the reaction of the exchanges and regulators. Their reaction has been to take a bad situation and make it orders of magnitude worse. Specifically, they froze customers out of their accounts WHILE THE MARKETS CONTINUED TO TRADE, refusing to even allow them to liquidate. This is unfathomable. The risk exposure precedent that has been set is completely intolerable and has destroyed the entire industry paradigm. No informed person can continue to engage these markets, and no moral person can continue to broker or facilitate customer engagement in what is now a massive game of Russian Roulette.

I have learned over the last week that MF Global is almost certainly the mere tip of the iceberg. There is massive industry-wide exposure to European sovereign junk debt. While other firms may not be as heavily leveraged as Corzine had MFG leveraged, and it is now thought that MFG’s leverage may have been in excess of 100:1, they are still suicidally leveraged and will likely stand massive, unmeetable collateral calls in the coming days and weeks as Europe inevitably collapses. I now suspect that the reason the Chicago Mercantile Exchange did not immediately step in to backstop the MFG implosion was because they knew and know that if they backstopped MFG, they would then be expected to backstop all of the other firms in the system when the failures began to cascade – and there simply isn’t that much money in the entire system. In short, the problem is a SYSTEMIC problem, not merely isolated to one firm.

And so, to the very unpleasant crux of the matter. The futures and options markets are no longer viable. It is my recommendation that ALL customers withdraw from all of the markets as soon as possible so that they have the best chance of protecting themselves and their equity. The system is no longer functioning with integrity and is suicidally risk-laden. The rule of law is non-existent, instead replaced with godless, criminal political cronyism.

InkyBinkyBarleyBoo on November 19, 2011 at 6:16 AM

Didn’t one of Newt’s books specifically deal with how the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor and whether it was all over at that point?

Igor R. on November 18, 2011 at 11:32 PM

I think so. It makes sense because the Japanese were busy at the time invading Poland.

Oh, just so you’ll know, $1.8 mill for a consultant is considerably on the low side for a consultant fee, and is considered spit in a bucket to a corporation like Freddie.

stenwin77 on November 19, 2011 at 8:01 AM

And it makes sense that you support Romney.

FloatingRock on November 19, 2011 at 12:47 AM

Sure, he can win and neither Paul nor Bachmann can.

csdeven on November 19, 2011 at 8:22 AM

The MSM is desperate to have Romney as the Republican nominee

because just like McCain,

they know Romney has almost no chance of beating Obama

because a nomination of Romney would mean

defeat to the conservatives

and the conservative base will not turn out.

What is surprising that so many conservatives a falling for the ruse put forth by Obama and the MSM…

georgealbert on November 19, 2011 at 8:36 AM

Part of the rub on Newt is the rebellion of the Republican Party under his Speakership. Well let’s analyze what happened, they helped balance the budget and cut spending, got welfare reform and tax reform. Let’s look at what happened once they got rid of him, no balanced budgets, spending out of control and lose control of the House and the Senate so Democrats can spend us into a deep hole. I doubt this would have happened, had Newt remained Speaker, but I do know we’d be in much better shape, as a country, had Newt remained as Speaker.

bflat879 on November 19, 2011 at 8:45 AM

Mitt quit in ’08, rolled over for McCain who got trounced in the general.

Hey, do y’all need anything over there that we can send you?

Cindy Munford on November 19, 2011 at 8:49 AM

I have to comment about a Romney and Obama race. I believe any Republican can beat Obama. What the MSM won’t tell you, about Obama’s negatives, are how many people believe he’s in over his head and want anyone else with experience to take over. Everyone knows Obama was never vetted and, if he’s not vetted this time people will make assumptions based on the vetting of Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh, either way Obama is in tough shape.

Since everyone knows the preferred candidate by the media is Obama, they aren’t going to believe many of the attacks coming from the media, which is why Newt will be given a chance at redemption for his past sins. If we are, in fact, a Judeo/Christian nation, redemption is a great part of that tradition and forgiveness is certainly a possibility.

No doubt about it, Romney can beat Obama, and we will be better off. I just believe we’ll be way better off with Newt than Romney.

bflat879 on November 19, 2011 at 8:52 AM

Rush is so smart.

Are you this stupid? This was an obvious joke that nobody with even casual interest in the subject would mistake to be a real story. Just like Newt’s book on the Germans bombing Pearl Harbor which is based on Animal House that was mentioned in the previous post. Get a little more jolly, bird.

Igor R. on November 19, 2011 at 10:47 AM

georgealbert on November 19, 2011 at 8:36 AM

Exactly how long are you going to keep repeating that stupid comment? The polling proves you to be wrong. And your comment also reveals you to be a narcissist that rivals even Obama!

You, my obtuse friend, are not the GOP base. You are a fringe element of the smallest iota of a minority. So much so that you aren’t even worthy of creating a statistic for.
