Video: Pelosi rejects Perry’s debate invite, goofs on him for good measure

posted at 8:55 pm on November 17, 2011 by Allahpundit

So proud was she of this gag that someone on her staff tweeted it out this morning to double the fun. It makes me cringe — not because the joke is lame but because it’s sad to think Perry has been reduced to such desperate straits that he’s now trying to bait the right’s hate objects into confrontation just to get some positive buzz going again. (See also his needling of Obama on Hannity last night for having grown up “in a privileged way.”) How long before he challenges Michael Moore to an arm-wrestling match?

Then again, maybe it’s time to think outside the box:

Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s campaign fundraising has gone into a tailspin as a result of poor debate performances and plunging poll numbers, jeopardizing his position as the best-funded Republican presidential candidate of 2012…

Perry’s loyal backers are running into resistance from Republican donors. One Perry fundraiser, who asked not to be named, said he received 15 RSVPs for a recent event from potential donors saying they might attend. But after a gaffe-marred Perry debate performance, none showed up.

“The debates have taken a toll,” the fundraiser said. “The national numbers have taken a toll. People see the campaign on a negative trajectory.”…

Another Perry fundraiser said he expects the Texas governor to raise between $3 million and $5 million in the final three months of 2012 — less than one-third of what he generated in the first six weeks of his candidacy.

How bad is it? Bad enough that some of those staffers who bailed on Gingrich over the summer to go work for Perry (or technically, for Perry’s supporters) are now bailing on Perry so that they can go back to working for Gingrich. Under different circumstances, if Perry were still neck and neck with Romney, taunting Obama and Pelosi would have looked like a flourish of confidence in the fact that he’d be the eventual nominee. As it is, with Pelosi swatting him away and snickering, he looks hapless. If they were smart, they’d take the bait and try to build him up in time for Iowa, as he’s probably their only chance of knocking off Romney in the primary and setting themselves up for an easier general election. Maybe they’re saving that strategy for December?

Update: I missed it on Twitter earlier but Team Perry had a nice comeback to Pelosi’s putdown: “Perhaps the third activity that you have forgotten is the ongoing insider trading?”

Geez. Politics is a very cold business, though if I were Gingrich I wouldn’t take them back.

AllahP, this is the second time in as many threads that you are saying this.

But you know what?

I double dare the Dems to go for that ploy and help push Perry over the finish line (he doesn’t need their help to do that though). Unfortunately, they won’t do it and you know why.

Perry stands a better chance in the general than Romney no matter how they spin it. He, at least, can count on the base turning out in droves to vote for him. Romney? Not so much.

And no! So-called “independents” do not decide elections. Most self-identified independents are either right-leaning or left-leaning already, they just do not want to adopt party labels.

The wicked witch actually handled that well. I think possibly that Perry may have dodged a bullet with that, because if he lost the debate with Pelosi there would be absolutely no hope. As it stands there is the faint hope that with the Cain Train derailment, Newt might flame out and give Perry a second chance.

Oh come on, you think Perry thought that up on his own? He has a team. Someone on the team thought it’d be a good idea, or maybe he did. A campaign is a team effort. They are all to blame for this fiasco, but I, as a Perry supporter, would put more blame on Perry as the leader of the team.

I dont think a lot of Hot Air commenters can handle this type of honest commentary. We’re supposed to live in an imaginary bubble where every single poll over the alst six months showing Romney running the strongest against Obama never happened.

It doesn’t, but it’s interesting the narrative that AP’s had lately. Keep only the truly negative about Perry and post none of the positive. Thus no a post on HA for Perry’s initiatives that came out early in the week. AP’s agenda is clear and it is not going to be remotely positive for Perry.

TheRightMan on November 17, 2011 at 9:00 PM

You can assert this all you like. It doesn’t make it true. Obviously you didn’t read Cost’s article in the Standard.

3. The swing vote is decisive. Most of the soft partisans and independents mentioned under the second point usually back one side or the other, but a good portion of them are true swing voters. And they tend to be numerous enough to constitute a decisive portion of the electorate. In other words, the side that wins these people wins the election…

Only a handful of elections –1948, 1956, 1988, and 2004 – have a small number of these swing voters. The remaining contests usually see the swing vote exceed 15 percent of the electorate. Considering how evenly split the parties have been historically, these voters are the prime movers in changes in the partisan makeup of the government.

Sure you did, but your post ends

I’m still trying to accept Perry as an “okay, whatever” option for the nomination after his big fizzle. When he entered the race, he was a knight on a horse come to slay the RINO dragon; after two a half months of debates, he’s become the guy we might be forced to circle back to after flirting with Cain, Gingrich, and who knows who else over the next six weeks. Maybe he is, in spite of everything, still the best Romney alternative in the field, but there’s just no getting excited about him at this point. Perry as nominee? Eh, okay. Whatever.

Perry fires back at Pelosi via Twitter

Perry responded on Thursday to Pelosi with a couple tweets. In the first, he asked Pelosi if she had forgotten ongoing insider trading – referring to a 60 Minutes story alleging she made money on insider Congressional information. Forty minutes later, he tweeted again wondering if she’d like to forget passing a 2,000 page health care reform without reading it.

It appears only a few news article referenced Perry’s response.

I also saw one of the tweets on Perry’s twitter page:

Something @NancyPelosi would like to forget: passing a 2k-page gov takeover of healthcare without reading it. American ppl haven’t forgotten

kerrhome on November 17, 2011 at 9:37 PM

I missed round 1 of this and was too late to comment then.

But I simply don’t understand what a Presidential candidate is doing challenging the minority leader in the House of Representatives to a debate is trying to accomplish. Especially Pelosi.

I watched Pelosi say on the Jon Stewart video saying that Democrats didn’t try to pass a budget because the “Repuplican’s would have fillibustered it”. I won’t bother explaining to the highly informed HA readers what a bold faced lie that was.

It’s just an example that the truth matters not one little bit to Pelosi.

What can be gained by debating such a person, especially when most of the MSM won’t report what happened?

Hog Wild on November 17, 2011 at 9:39 PM

I remain a strong Perry supporter.

However, I must confess that I saw his challenging Pelosi to a debate as one of those head-scratching moments.

I believe he did it to raise public awareness of his proposed plan to overhaul Congress and saw Pelosi as one of the ‘boogeywomen’ and face of the Dem party in Congress.

The problem, though, is that his proposed plan will face opposition not only from Dems but the dinosaur Republicans as well.

Can you see McConnell agreeing to a proposal to make Congress part-time? Murkowski? McCain?

LOL…

But this is a proposal that is certainly long overdue.

How many times does Perry get finished, easyt65? Is he a vampire or something? LOL… TheRightMan

TRM, again, WHAT was Perry thinking? Who the heck is advising him? SERIOUS Presidential candidates don’t challnge FAILED, EX-Speakers of the House to a debate! After a poor debate performance, trying to make up for it by challenging Nancy Pelosi to a dabate (if that is what he did) is like a pro boxer losing a bout then attempting to silence his critics by challenging a high school student to fight!

Winning a debate with Pelosi nets you NOTHING because you supposedly want to be President, not Speaker of the House. LOSING that debate ends your campaign because if you can’t even beat a failed EX-Speaker of the House then you can’t hack it as the Commander and Chief. Challenging Pelosi and allowing her to grab press by ‘swatting away’ the challenge…and making fun of it…hurts your campaign. The whole thuing was just an amateurish, NOT well-thought-out move. I like a lot of the guys ideas, but this one was stupid.
