Video: “Patriotic millionaires” insist on draft rather than enlistment, or something
posted at 9:49 am on November 17, 2011 by Ed Morrissey
The Daily Caller attended a press conference held by self-described “patriotic millionaires” who demanded that Congress raise taxes in order to address the massive budget deficits the country now faces. Michelle Fields brought along her iPad, poised on the Treasury’s deficit donation page, and asked these “patriots” if they’d like to volunteer their cash right now rather than wait for Congress. Hilarity ensues:
So what’s the lesson here? True patriots won’t volunteer, but insist on being drafted before coming to this nation’s service? That’s certainly a unique view of “patriotism,” isn’t it? That’s because “patriotism” isn’t what drives this message — it’s ideology. It would be equally “patriotic” to demand that the federal government return to a level of spending that we had just a few years ago, when the federal government spent one out of every five dollars rather than one out of every four in the American economy. What makes more involuntary government seizure of private property “patriotic,” especially when — as one of the interviewees admitted in this clip — the wealthy already pay far more of their share in income taxes than any other group?
As far as making no impact on deficits through voluntary contributions, that’s probably true. It’s also true that a tax that raises an average of $70 billion a year, as these proposals claim (using static tax analysis), won’t have any real impact on a $1.3 trillion deficit, either. That’s about 5% of the problem. What would make an impact is to quit spending $3.7 trillion a year in the federal budget, returning us to 2007 levels of $2.7 trillion, or even the FY2001 level of $2 trillion. That’s the actual solution, and the “patriotic millionaires” are simply obfuscating in an attempt to make the actual solution less clear. That doesn’t sound very “patriotic,” either.
You know what was truly patriotic? War bonds in the 1940s. The government sold them in an effort to fund the American military in World War II, voluntarily, and the rich and middle class bought them to support the nation at a time of crisis. If the government wants to do that, and make contributions a voluntary investment, then let Congress authorize that. Insisting on a draft for everyone else while refusing to volunteer yourself is hardly “patriotic.”

That is a magnificent point, Ed.

If they donate, they would count out the middle man and it would have a greater impact.

Bahahahaa… taxes aren’t charity? Well, yeah! So, how about we stop treating it like a substitute to charity?
MeatHeadinCA on November 17, 2011 at 9:54 AM
that was a splendid move, Ms Fields.
ted c on November 17, 2011 at 9:55 AM
And while all of these guys say that if they individually contribute, it won’t make a difference; somehow they believe that if all of the 1%’s taxes are raised, it will make a difference.
MeatHeadinCA on November 17, 2011 at 9:56 AM
the look on that guys face is priceless. It says, “I’ve been had.”
ted c on November 17, 2011 at 9:57 AM
Michelle Fields….I’m sorry for releasing my inner male pig but mmmm hmmmmm, nummy.
She should have asked those fuds to sign a petition which would retroactively tax the money they have safely stashed away, say at about 75%, and see what the reaction would be. Rich people advocating for higher taxes after they’ve already made their millions doesn’t impress me in the least.

Blake on November 17, 2011 at 9:58 AM
Dude; it’s not about making a “difference” at all. The root of the problem is one thing, its revenge. The “1%” need to be taken down a notch, need to feel the pain, need to give their fair share—it’s not about “making a difference” one bit–its about leveling the playing field. These self-righteous folks that want to extract a pound of flesh out of others won’t lift a finger (to Fields’ iPad) to willfully donate theirs.
ted c on November 17, 2011 at 9:59 AM
Good point. History is full of examples to back up your point.
MeatHeadinCA on November 17, 2011 at 10:01 AM
What absolute slime! There’s nothing patriotic about these scumbags. They want everyone else to pay more in taxes, knowing full well the system will be rigged so they’ll never see one extra dime of theirs go to the federal government. They just want the gravy train to keep chugging along.
That’s a great video and it needs to be posted on every single conservative blog and aired in its entirety on every radio talk show along with FoxNews. Unbelievable.

We need more clever reporting like what Michelle Fields did here. It will help much with the youth vote.

They were, and unfortunately, the complete devaluation of our dollar has made many of those bonds, and other types of bonds bought by civic-minded citizens, practically worthless. While it’s a nice, nostalgic idea…who the hell would buy bonds backed by a government $15 trillion in debt?
That video was pure gold, though. There’s something both sickening and satisfying about those narcissistic douchebags sneering that it’s “silly” to do your own part to pay down the debt, rather than forcing everyone else around them to do the same. Cowardly scum.
MadisonConservative on November 17, 2011 at 10:01 AM
By insisting upon a “draft”, these people are demanding that this admin be responsible for today’s problems, not the rich.
If the govt increases taxation upon the rich, and it doesn’t solve any problems – and it wont, then the rich are off the moral hook.
Smart move.

This is just more of Obama’s leftist charade . . . protesting street scum mixed with “patriotic” millionaires equals absolute rancid “BS”.
rplat on November 17, 2011 at 10:09 AM
The encapsulation of the leftist brain. Leftist are less charitable as a rule because they rely on a “benevolent” government to do their charitable thinking and donating for them. Just look at Europe. When a disaster happens in the world European governments promise large sums of money (which they never actually come through with) and the people donate very little of their own time or money. The US government promises a modest sum and our people bend over backwards donating time and money. And then dishonest analysis is done to prove how stingy the US is when in reality we crush all other nations in terms of charity.
The idiots in this video want to be relieved of the burden of compassion and charity through government nannyism.
NotCoach on November 17, 2011 at 10:13 AM
Excellent punking! The Daily Caller should import this video to YouTube to reach a wider audience, I expect it would go viral.

It’s Groundhog Day all over again.
An NPR show last night spent 20 minutes interviewing the author of a new book about statistics showing that the wealthiest 500 or so people in the USA now pay less in taxes than the wealthiest used to pay…Quelle Horreure!
Not one moment of that envy enraging diatribe ever mentioned the simple pointthat if the USA simply confiscated all those folks money at 100% it would not make a dent in the Federal Spending Budgets.
It is as always a Grounhog Day cover story to push raising taxes on the 100K to 950K income levels where 95% of government money has to come from since that group is 50 million strong compared to that oh so evil 500.
They think we are stupid enough to shoot ourselves in hopes of hitting an “evil enemy of the people group” with the same shot.

I’m a huge fan of old movies, and I often see the “Buy War Bonds” message at the beginning and end of movies. I have often wondered why we didn’t do that for Afghanistan. If any war had the potential to stir patriotic fervor that could have translated into citizens buying war bonds, it would have been the invasion of Afghanistan after 9/11. We were there to avenge the crimes perpetrated on thousands of innocent Americans, but at the same time we also rescued the oppressed populace, freeing them from the cruel iron grip of al Qaeda. We had the moral high ground on that one, and if capitalizing on patriotism is wrong well, then, so was FDR.

That was the most genius thing ever. Great job, Daily Caller.
Even if each one thought their own contribution wouldn’t make a difference there were what-12? of them there. Together they could have paid the equivalent of probably 100s of middle class families.

So how many of these concerned millionaires have been involved in pay for play with the federal government? Because that’s the only reason they are sticking their heads up -Self Interest.
I would be making a list of who they are and who they have that lobby our government on their behalf by industry, and by specific company.
These millionaires are participating in some you scratch my back, I will scratch yours. They create this spectacle to give political cover to Obama’s class warfare strategy. What do they get in return? The Democrat party is awash in crony capitalism, it’s not exactly a secret.

I’m confused. I thought rich people were the problem in this country. So why should we be listening to anything these people say we should be doing? They’re the enemy, the 1%, the scum sucking leeches who’ve controlled the wealth of this country for far too long.
If you’re truly rich, and that’s definitely a moving target, what that word means anymore, but if you’ve got enough money to be willing to suggest that more of it should go to the federal government, you’re not really all that concerned about any of this anyway. You’ll still have enough to do what you want in life. Unlike the rest of us, where a single dollar bill is still worth the effort it takes to stoop over and pick it up off the ground.
Ah, well. A million here, a billion there. Sooner or later it adds up to real money.

How many times can it be written, “Liberalism is a mental disorder.”
Because Liberalism is a mental disorder.
Something about splitting a point to infinity that makes nothing mean nothing and everything mean nothing, too. They dissect-times-infinity common sense and direct solutions, reducing everything and nothing at the same time to some absurd point of argument based upon meaninglessness.

She asked each of them to donate a few thousand dollars.
Now even if it was a trap, what is a few thousand dollars to a millionaire?
It’s not like she said 50k dollars?
To a millionaire, who really believed they should be paying more, what is a few thousand dollars to prove you are serious?
If she had called me out like that, i would have filled it out right then and there.
/If i believed in it.
Thune on November 17, 2011 at 11:16 AM
What I find most irritating about these hypocrites is that they quickly perceive that their own personal contribution would be just “symbolic” because it would make barely a dent in the fiscal problem.
Fair enough. But they’re especially hypocritical to make this argument because their whole event was symbolic. No serious person believes you can fix our fiscal problem by taxing the top 1%.
Funny how their impatience with symbolic gestures only arises when it costs them real money.

She could have said that here is your opportunity to raise your taxes by giving whatever you think would be fair to the US Treasury. How much more do you think you should pay?
When they refused she could have asked them if they were saying that they would only pay more taxes if everone else did and why.
The problem is that libs think everyone else is stupid.

“I’m rich. I mean, I’m wealthy as an oil sheik and I want DEPERATELY to pay MY FAIR SHARE of taxes. But I only want to pay MY FAIR SHARE at the point of a gun. It just wouldn’t be right if MY FAIR SHARE of taxes wasn’t pried out of my bank account by force of law and the threat of prison. I mean, DON’T ask me to pay MY FAIR SHARE VOLUNTARILY…..(horrors!), because……uh…geeez…because if you don’t FORCE me to pay what I really, really WANT to pay, well…THAT would be a JOKE. “

It’s this simple!
Gang-of-One on November 17, 2011 at 11:44 AM
Exactly. I suspect something other than altruistic motivations when the rich start spouting populist sentiments and demanding that more wealth and power be concentrated in the State.
If these “patriotic millionaires” truly spared a thought for those not as fortunate, they would busy themselves with directly identifying and funding opportunities. (Not mere table scraps, but endeavors and initiatives that affirm the dignity and worth of every man, women and child.) There is no shortage of ways (and reputable non-profit organizations) in which they can match their considerable resources to the considerable needs in impoverished and underserved communities. Their regard for those in need should not begin and end with a tax bracket.
But as is so often the way with the rich who do not give freely and liberally, they call for government coercion. And no wonder, such is the privilege of the state-connected wealthy that those who call for government coercion are the ones who are able escape its impact.
Threshing Flora on November 17, 2011 at 11:46 AM
Exactly what I expected from the D-bags! They don’t want to pay higher taxes anymore than I do. They want to keep their deductions and tax dodges so that I can pay higher taxes. If they were really interested in paying higher taxes, they just won’t take any deductions.

These guys are the top 1% of the top 1% and aren’t going to pay one more dime if tax rates are raised. The top 1% is anyone making over around $350,000 and most of them don’t have the ability to hide income like these guys can. And I’ll bet real money that most of these lying cowards depend on crony capitalism, tax complexity and other corrupt government policies for a lot of their wealth. All they’re doing is ingratiating themselves with the statists they rely on while selling everyone else down the river.
RadClown on November 17, 2011 at 1:49 PM
What these hypocrites never seem to get is that the government is insatiably greedy. Not only would higher taxes on the wealthy not make a dent in the deficit, the government would rapidly spend the extra revenue and then demand more. There is no end to the problems and needs that liberals are eager to solve at someone else’s expense.
NNtrancer on November 17, 2011 at 2:00 PM
Lesson learned: the rich don’t tip either.
Little Nell on November 17, 2011 at 2:41 PM
The reason why you can find millionaires and billionaires willingly asking to have their taxes raised in the first place is because they are trying to use the tax system to limited the potential number of competitors in the future. A young entrepreneur who’s full of ambition, may have a better idea, and is trying to capture market share from the established players is always a constant threat to the status quo. If you look at the tax increase proposals they all include tax increases on individuals making $200,000 or more a year. In other words, people who are just starting out in the market place of ideas with a personally owned small business or innovative investment plan. Regardless of the fact that someone making 5 times less money is somehow considered to be part of the fat cat “millionaires and billionaires” club. A tax hike on a two-hundred thousandaire is gonna have a larger negative impact on their bottom line than compared to a millionaire or billionaire. Not only that but the millionaire and billionaire can afford a small army of lawyers and accountants to circumvent the increased rates in the end anyways. Instead of calling themselves “Patriotic millionaires demanding higher taxes” they ought to honestly describe themselves as “Crony-capitalists gaming the system to gain an unfair advantage” or in other words, business as usual.

You know, I’ve been considering volunteering some of my time to a homeless shelter to help out the less fortunate.
Sadly I’ve not been arrested for anything where I could plead for the government to force me into this to satisfy a community service requirement.
What? You think I’m going to just go donate my time when the government isn’t forcing me to go? Why would anyone do that? That’s just crazy talk there… you’re being silly; nobody would ever do that.
I’ll just keep committing small inoffensive crimes and hope someday the government catches me so I can do my part to help.
Too bad, I really want to help too; just not enough to do anything about it without being forced with the threat of jailtime.
