Rasmussen poll shows Gingrich with double-digit lead in Iowa
posted at 1:23 pm on November 17, 2011 by Ed Morrissey
Rasmussen’s latest poll in Iowa gives Newt Gingrich a big claim to legitimacy in the Republican nomination fight, but it also is pretty good news for Mitt Romney as well. Among likely caucus-goers, Gingrich now leads Romney 32/19, with Herman Cain dropping more than half of his previous support:
The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of Likely Iowa Republican caucus-goers shows Gingrich with 32% followed by former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney at 19%. Georgia businessman Herman Cain, who led in Iowa last month, drops to third with 13% of the vote. Texas Congressman Ron Paul draws 10% of the vote in Iowa, while Texas Governor Rick Perry and Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann each grab six percent (6%).
Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum draws support from five percent (5%) of caucus-goers while former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman picks up two percent (2%). Only one percent (1%) would prefer some other candidate and six percent (6%) more are undecided.
This is the first primary survey conducted entirely after last week’s GOP debate on foreign policy. Cain also recently fumbled a response to the administration’s actions in Libya.
This comes from a sample of 700 respondents, which is larger than the Bloomberg survey released this week showing a four-way tie in Iowa. This survey took place more recently than the Bloomberg poll as well, incorporating the Saturday debate on foreign policy, in which Cain struggled. As far as the Ron Paul surge Bloomberg noted, it seems to have bypassed Rasmussen’s sample. In fact, while Paul continues to hold onto about 10% of the caucus goers in Iowa, he’s not likely to get much more:
Ron Paul, while placing fourth overall, is also the candidate Iowa voters least want to see win the nomination. Eighteen percent (18%) hold name Paul as the least favorite candidate followed closely by Bachmann at 15%. Thirteen percent (13%) don’t want to see Romney or Huntsman grab the nomination, while 11% would like to see Cain miss the nod. Only eight percent (8%) name Gingrich as the candidate they least want to see win.
Essentially, Rasmussen reports that Cain and Gingrich have changed places since their October poll, while Romney and Paul have remained constant. That’s good news for Romney, who isn’t playing for a win in Iowa. A strong second-place finish will suit him well as the primaries roll into New Hampshire, and then Michigan and Nevada. He needs to avoid falling below third place, but even that wouldn’t be a total disaster for Romney in a state he wasn’t expected to win.
In the crosstabs, Gingrich is winning across most of the demos now. He leads Romney by double digits among men and women, wins every age and income demo, and leads both Republicans and independents. Romney only bests Gingrich among ideological “others,” those who do not identify as “very conservative” or “somewhat conservative.” Interestingly, Gingrich leads among Tea Party adherents by a wide margin, 43% to 17% for Cain and only 9% for Romney. Gingrich leads most of the religious demos, too, with 33% of evangelicals (Cain second at 14%), 31% of Protestants (Romney close at 28%), and Catholics (39% to Romney’s 21%). Only among “others” does Gingrich trail, 22%, to 24% for … Ron Paul.
Of course, several candidates have grabbed this kind of momentum in this race, only to come up empty within a few weeks. Can Gingrich maintain this momentum? As the media and other candidates step up their scrutiny of the former Speaker, we will certainly find out. One thing is almost certain: unlike the previous bubble candidates, it won’t be a debate that trips Gingrich.

I am completely astounded how easily commenters on Hot Air chase the lastest new guy in the polls and how easily you are manipulated. For people who won’t be told to vote for by Liberal Media or Liberal Journalists sure don’t mind being led around by the nose by the Right. You just parrot the lastest thing anyone happens to say about any candidate. No thought, no rational thinking, just whatever Rush, Levin, Morrisey, whoever, doesn’t matter. I have never liked Perry but he is really starting to look good, bumbing and all. I am a Romney supporter and we all know you hate him and any supporter but really, this is becoming ridiculous. What happened to Cain, not the women, you didn’t believe that, maybe you found out he was not as clued in as you thought. Now is Newt, the man has said little in the debates that could be called great other than arguing with the moderators and going on and on about what he used to do leaving out the part about being ask to leave the Speakership long long ago for cause. Rush was right – people are sheeple and he is enjoying being one of the pipers leading the uninformed along. I sure you are nice people but quit talking about being not manipulated is silly as you are definately being lead around by the nose.

Mr. g2825m,
Watch this video and understand that what Clinton is rattling off as his accomplishments were really the result of Newt’s work:

and Bachmann, Perry, Cain before that. Dont worry they will flop (again) on Newt in about 3 weeks once they figure out his past (political not personal).

Well – you are a Romney supporter and you’re angry at everyone on HotAir for “flip flopping”?

I just listed ALL Romney’s “track record” as a Governor! So HE HAS A RECORD! Vote for who like but do not be dishonest about Romney’s record after he has said that he has converted on the issues we find opposite of ours.
Unfortunately I cannot see videos over here in AFG on my gov’t computer as they are blocked. I AGREE with you about Gingrich and the whole Contract of America and what was accomplished. I am a conservative and lived through all that… :o)

Not only are you opinionated you are arrogant as well. Did you type that while looking in the mirror Ms Narcissist?

I don’t subscribe to the Republican philosophy of “It’s his turn” but I do have to admit Newt has eaten a lot of s&it sandwiches and come out of it standing up. No doubt the most brilliant bulb in the pack.
Something about him still bothers me though.
Mr. Grump on November 17, 2011 at 3:06 PM
You guys either are dishonest or your reading comprehension is very low level. He was for the impeachment of Clinton but for perjury charges not because of his personal life. You guys are using the democrat argument to argue against Gingrich.
Here’s an idea. Forget about his personal life as he has a long enough political record for you to look at. Please don’t revert to such sleazy tactics as it makes your arguments weak.

Actually, I wrote Newt off last summer. He has since won my vote back with his ideas, vision, track record in the ’90s, and his commitment to take on the Democrats and their media allies. I also don’t cringe when he talks about policy, our nation’s history, or the role of government.
Punchenko on November 17, 2011 at 3:18 PM
This is fun! I’m still waiting to see whom the MSM finally chooses for the Republican Presidential nominee.
Everyone’s piled on to the top candidate so hard no one can stand the attacks. Bachmann clearly was stuffed in the CBS debate.
Now even moderate or conservative commentators have bought the where-there’s-smoke-there’s-fire thinking of the MSM propaganda and have expanded it in their thinking to “sexual assault” charges — and thus can be seen the head of the smear monster rising happily to a cause.
While Repubs vetting Republican candidates is a must, I’m thinking this is more an MSM shell game.
Answer: a brokered Paul/Huntsman ticket?
Yes we… probably Cain!

Romney has a lot of good points but in the biz when your first record flops you stay on the shelf. The again there’s Nixon, but that didn’t work out so well either.

I can get excited at the New Newt. Not all of the old Newt was bad either. The big question is can the peons get over the obsession against the old fat white grey republican, which I prefer to Benedict Baynor and Juan McCain.

Nice argument, but there were plenty of people calling for a second look long before Newt surpassed 8% in the polls. Also notice, that we Hot Air people are also voters, shocking I know, but it is true. I was very much against him, until I started looking for someone to support on top of Bachmann since she does not look to be able to recapture the fire. So, it is not just following the polls, it is likely many were leading the polls by some margin. Newt is surging for two reasons. Anyone but Romney and he is performing way above par in the debates and in interviews.

Are you all just clueless “sheeple” whom the media can dictate to?
Then why assume all your fellow Republicans are?
Our process is the most democratic nominating process in the world. Even the Democrats reserve 20% of their convention delegate seats for elected official, party activists, union bosses, and former Politburo members. Republican delegates are almost all elected via primary or caucus or open process.
CNN doesn’t get to vote in any of them. Neither does the NYT or WaPo or Politico. WE do.
I’ve been participating in primaries since we began them. Not a single time has any “Party Establishment” figure or “Elitist” told me how I could or should vote. Never.
The primary process is a vetting process. Everyone gets attacked by opponents and/or media and/or Democrats. That’s how we find out if they can take it or not, and if their skeletons amount to anything to be concerned about.
It’s rough enough without imagining dark and controlling conspiracies zapping your brains. Just tell the voices in your heads to STFU.

Get ready for 4 more yrs. We can’t stand up to the media. Everything they say we some how run with it like it is the gospel. Shameful.

Forget about Newt’s debating skills versus Obama. There will be only two presidential debates. Both on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon in October. If the NFL games, College football games or baseball playoffs don’t overshadow them, the MSM will simply declare a draw. Repeat that conclusion 24/7 for 6 weeks and what will Newt have accomplished?
Yes, Newt is brilliant and a good debater, but he’s also a loose cannon. By next Fall he’ll have come up with at least 6 new great ideas. And if we are very lucky 2 of them might even be conservative. Sort of.
Remember health insurance mandates, AGW, DeDe and local Amnesty boards?
Fred 2 on November 17, 2011 at 6:40 PM
This is a push poll. I’ve seen Fox and Ramussen tag team like this before to influence the electorate when it came to Palin. Seeing how gullible the conservative electorate is, I wouldn’t blame them for doing this. We’ll see if Iowans are really enamored with the Speaker on the ground their. Can’t wait until the vote the 4th of Jan.

So, basically then, you’re a hypocrite, considering you’ve given pretty much the same reason for supporting Romney that Newt gave for supporting Scozzafava.
If we want liberal talking points, we’ll go to the professionals. No one went after Clinton for having an affair while having an affair of their own. Congress went after Clinton because he committed a felony.
xblade on November 17, 2011 at 7:46 PM
Maybe so. But I also think that it’s no more right to let the MSM vet Repub candidates than to let Abbas and Ahmadinejad vet candidates in Israeli elections.
The “vetting” that the MSM has done so far revolved around name-calling, ridiculing flubs and diggin up poorly arguable background stuff. Nothing that really helps us differentiate between the candidates’ positions and Presidential capabilities.
We, as conservatives, should vet our own candidates according to our own standards and intentions and not be blown about by the MSM winds of polling and commentary.
The debates so far have pretty much been designed for showmanship and profit for the news organizations that host them. I would for once, like to see substantive debates, where each candidate gets to set a policy position on a variety of presidential subjects. That would be helpful, not playing the who-looks-most-”Presidential” and who-never-misspeaks crap.
Let the Republican Party hold the debates, and let all the networks that want to show up broadcast it.

Oh, and by we, I mean other people than myself.

I think that there is a good chance that by the beginning of January, Newt may go down a bit in the polls and Perry might have a comeback.
I will support Newt, but I think he may wear thin in the general election on voters. Although that may not matter in the general. People are sick to death of Obama and Newt’s drawbacks and attitude may not matter. I hope.
Perry has been very good lately in the last couple debates (minus that one brain freeze) and good in interviews. He still has alot of cash and connections. Plus he came off as liable and good natured in joking about the brain freese.
If Perry keeps going like he as these past couple weeks, he may resurge. (is that a word? lol)
