Did the DoJ attempt to manipulate Fast & Furious media coverage?

posted at 3:40 pm on November 15, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

Relax, Jim Treacher tells us.  Everyone knows that the Obama administration has been scandal-free, except, y’know … for the scandals.  Hot on the heels of the Washington Post bombshell on Solyndra, the Daily Caller’s Matthew Boyle discovers that the Department of Justice apparently withheld information requested by Senator Charles Grassley on a Bush-era operation involving gun tracking in order to drop it in selected media leaks to make the Operation Fast and Furious investigation look partisan in nature:

Attorney General Eric Holder’s Justice Department sought to manipulate reporters’ coverage of Operation Fast and Furious during the days preceding a November 1 Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, new emails obtained by The Daily Caller indicate.

Emails between senior Justice Department officials and investigators in the office of Iowa Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley show that congressional staffers leading the investigation into Operation Fast and Furious requested information about Operation Wide Receiver — a Bush administration program – and other similar cases, more than a full month before the DOJ leaked information to selected media outlets on October 31.

Grassley had asked Holder for information specific to Wide Receiver, although the excerpts Boyle uses don’t show Grassley using the operation name.  The request itself asked for information on earlier operations in the Bush administration that had resulted in lost guns, specifically due to failure of intended interdiction by Mexican authorities.  That underscored the glaring differences between Wide Receiver and Fast and Furious, differences that Senator John Cornyn forced Holder to acknowledge in testimony last week — that the Bush administration had conducted its operation with the full knowledge and cooperation of the Mexican government and that the Bush administration actually tracked the weapons, unlike the ATF in F&F.

Despite having asked for this data weeks earlier, the DoJ withheld it from Grassley until October 31st — but not before leaking it to friendly media in a manner that obscured those key differences:

Instead, the Justice Department held the information and related documents until the night before Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer was scheduled to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Those documents showed Breuer was at least partially responsible for Fast and Furious. Breuer subsequently issued a statement apologizing for not stopping the ATF agents leading Fast and Furious from implementing the same failed tactics used in Operation Wide Receiver — information he confirmed he had in April 2010.

The DOJ selectively picked which news outlets received the leaked documents, and which documents were released.

Well, it’s no big deal, right?  It’s not as if this is a life-and-death issue.  Oh, wait

Scandal-free, my foot.  If this administration had nothing to hide, it wouldn’t be so desperate to manipulate the media and dodge Congressional oversight.  It’s long past time for Eric Holder to resign.  It might be time for the Senate to block all Obama nominees until he fires Holder.

I found a simple truth to exist when it comes to this administration. If the question occurs to you to ask then the answer is going to be yes.

Obama was right. This is the most transparently corrupt administration ever.

Holder’s a pretty busy guy just reading all his memos. He probably didn’t even know anything about this. Simple miscommunication. Carry on.

Holders not leaving. To fire him is to validate the right’s belief that there is corruption and incompetence running through this administration. As long as he stays they can ignore the whole thing with a wink and a nod toward their friends in the MSM. You know all those people who believe that as long as you hang out with the cool kids how bad can things get?

Did DOJ conspire with the media to manipulate the coverage for partisan political cover? or vice versa? When charges are brought against holder can certain media personalities also be held criminally liable as “accessories to murder after the fact”?

C’mon, the DOJ has much more important issues to deal with than a scandal with a body count:

DOJ: Lying on Match.com needs to be a crime

(CNET)The U.S. Department of Justice is defending computer hacking laws that make it a crime to use a fake name on Facebook or lie about your weight in an online dating profile

It was time to block all Obama nominees starting in January 2009. He doesn’t even know anyone fit to serve in government — and he’s been choosing the worst of that bad lot.

Rememebr who runs the DOJ Public Affairs Office:

Legal eagle Tracy Schmaler, formerly the senior director, global public affairs at Yahoo! Inc, is joining the Justice Department’s Office of Public Affairs as Deputy Director where she will work alongside Director Matt Miller. Previous to working at Yahoo!, Schmaler ran the show at the Senate Judiciary Committee where she was communications director to the Committee for Senator Leahy. During her time on the Committee, Schmaler made life difficult for the Bush Administration’s Supreme Court nominations and her work is both feared and well-respected by both sides of the aisle. At Yahoo!, Schmaler focused on international human rights issues around China and Microsoft’s failed bid for the company.

This is the woman who screamed at Sheryl Atkisson of CBS News. Clearly she is running a fulltime operation to cover up and divert attention from F&F.

When the media know exactly what it’s doing, and they are willing, it’s not manipulation. It’s collusion.

MMfA Propaganda Watch: Media Matters Attacks ‘Fast and Furious’ Critic
http://bigjournalism.com/rb/2011/11/05/mmfa-propaganda-watch-media-matters-attacks-fast-and-furious-critic/
Apparently, Vanderboegh’s book was cited by one of four men who were arrested in Georgia as “inspiration” for a plot to attack federal employees and civilians. If you’ve learned anything by now, it’s that you should do some research into the things over which Media Matters gets breathless. The four men are loons. If you read this report from ABCNews.com, you can see that the book didn’t turn previously normal individuals into murderous terrorists. They were allegedly part of a militia group known to authorities which was apparently infiltrated by an undercover agent who learned of the plot and built the case against them. The four men are also senior citizens who had trouble hearing the judge at the preliminary hearing. They’ve been into this stuff long before this book came out. Speaking of which, does Media Matters really want to go down that road? Books that might lead to violence? Thought crimes, etc?

Brietbart’s Big Journalism nails it.
http://sipseystreetirregulars.blogspot.com/2011/11/brietbarts-big-journalism-nails-it.html

A disappointed Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer reads his morning Washington Post and ponders the failure of the indictment of the Georgia Geriatric Morons to adequately aid in the Gunwalker Cover-up. “Damn! Soros is just not getting his money’s worth from Media Matters.”

wildly theorized that it was very likely the subject of gun-walking came up in the Mukasey briefing — even though both Schumer and Holder conceded that they did not really know what was discussed at the briefing or even who was present at it (details you might figure Holder would be up on if it actually showed that this whole Fast & Furious fiasco was a Bush creation).

So Holder is sooooooooooooo incompetent that he can’t even copy some other operation even when it is spelled out to him?

DSchoen on November 15, 2011 at 5:31 PM

Don’t know about post-Issa manipulation, but when they were pushing the fake ’90% of all guns…’ nonsense last year, it sure looked like manipulation. WaPo pushed the story initially, and it was picked up by other papers and tv news including Fox. It was debunked mostly in the conservative media and the story appeared dead. Then a couple of months later WaPo revived the story exactly as it was presented previously, for no apparent reason other than to push propaganda. It was then picked up again by other media outlets including Fox.

I’d like to see the emails in WaPo’s office, ie ‘why are we reprising this story?’, and at Fox News, -’didn’t we debunk this once already?’.

Via The Ulsterman Report:
BREAKING: Entire Case File On Brian Terry Killing Missing
by Ulsterman on November 15, 2011
.
In what seems almost an unbelievable development even for the inept and non-cooperative Obama Department of Justice, reports are now breaking of the entire case file of the killers responsible for slain U.S. Border Agent Brian Terry have disappeared - possibly sealed for an as yet unknown reason by a federal judge.
The news first broke today via The Arizona Daily Star’s Tim Stellar, who gives the following details:
.
In May, federal prosecutors won an indictment against Manuel Osorio-Arellanes and others, and they announced it with a press release. Only Osorio-Arellanes’ name was visible in the indictment, but there were blacked-out words where other defendants’ names go.
Osorio-Arellanes was charged with second-degree murder and was not considered the likely shooter. He had been wounded during the gunfight that left Terry dead.
.
But in the ensuing months, the case disappeared from court records.
Why? Nobody is saying.
.
Asked about the case, Debra Hartman, spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in San Diego, which is prosecuting the case, said via email: “Yes, our office is handling the case and can’t comment further.”

Did the DoJ attempt to manipulate Fast & Furious media coverage?

Why would they have to do that? The media is totally in the tank for the Obama administration and fully supports abrogation of second amendment rights and the disarming of the US citizenry. No manipulation was necessary. These leaks simply served as grist for what the media was planning to spin anyway.
