Brutal: Cain blanks on Libya, supports collective bargaining for public employee unions
posted at 5:29 pm on November 14, 2011 by Allahpundit
You won’t believe me until you click play but this is much worse than Perry’s brain lock at the debate last week. Perry lost his train of thought; Cain doesn’t have a train at all here, to the point where he needs confirmation from the interviewer of what Obama’s position on Libya actually was. Eventually he produces some boilerplate about not supporting the opposition until you’re sure who’s in it and of course not making a decision as president until he has all the information, which is a standard Cain fallback talking point whenever he gets in trouble on a question, but the first two minutes or so are pure agony. The board actually took pity on him, I think, by not following up. Imagine if they’d asked his opinion on Obama’s decision to ignore the War Powers Act. Remember, this is a guy who apparently wants to be considered for secretary of defense.
And that still only barely qualifies as the worst answer he gave today. Here’s what he told them when asked, predictably enough, about Scott Walker’s righteous crusade against public employee unions:
On the issue of collective bargaining, Cain said he supported the right of public employees to bargain collectively.
“But not collective hijacking. What I mean by that, if they have gotten so much for so many years and it’s going to bankrupt the state, I don’t think that’s good. It appears that in some instances, they really don’t care.”…
In an interview with the Journal Sentinel last month, Cain said that he was “right in the corner of Gov. Scott Walker 100%” in Walker’s battle with public employee unions.
Cain also appeared to be unclear on the issue of collective bargaining as it involves federal employees. Asked if he thought federal employees should have the ability to bargain collectively, Cain said: “They already have it, don’t they?”
Told they didn’t, he said, “They have unions.”
His candidacy’s now basically an experiment to see if there’s anything he could say about policy that grassroots conservatives wouldn’t ignore/forgive in the name of nominating a candidate who’s “authentic” instead of some slick RINO Beltway insider phony (many of whom at least oppose collective bargaining for PEUs). Is there anything? Or can any screw-up be dismissed so long as it’s “clarified” a few hours later, knowing full well that undecideds won’t be as forgiving if he pulls something like this in a debate against Obama? How steep is the authenticity grading curve here, exactly?
I was going to give you the clip of Bialek’s ex-boyfriend claiming today that she told him back in 1997 that Cain had done something inappropriate, but most of you will find this more important. (You can watch that vid here.) His polls have already started to slide from the allegations — Doug Schoen’s latest survey finds 53 percent believe the harassment charges are true, with independents splitting 46/27, and Politico’s new battleground poll finds his support among likely Republican voters cut in half in the span of eight days. So maybe none of this much matters anymore, except of course to Newt Gingrich.

And ironically, this will be what does him in.
That’s the way elections are supposed to work, folks. Candidate goes down, not because some Obama-supporting scuzzbag like Allred throws wild accusations, but because the candidate’s policies don’t line up with what the voters want.
Democracy. The worst system in the world, except for all the others.
(apologies to Winston Churchill).
northdallasthirty on November 14, 2011 at 5:34 PM
It’s been obvious since the beginning that Cain doesn’t have the slightest idea what he’s talking about half the time. It’s why he resorts to the same talking points over and over. No depth.
Romney, Gingrich, Santorum..and whether you like them or not..Huntsman and Paul can talk in depth about just about any issues. Bachmann, Perry, Cain resort to talking points a majority of the time.

DUDE. Herm. If you’re gonna offer yourself up as someone to be president of the US, you have got to put the necessary work in. How little effort you give to major issues is darn near offensive.
And yes, I know Obama and Joe Biden are boneheads and the media let them coast, but a.) we don’t have that luxury and b.) it’s not right, even if we did.
Bye, Herm. Thanks for playing.

kevinkristy on November 14, 2011 at 5:38 PM
To be fair, so would I.
However, this is why we have primaries. Cain will fire up the troops at the convention as a prime-time speaker, but it’s doubtful he’ll be the nominee.

I was inclined to dismiss the sex allegations as being SOP for Obama campaigns.
I like Herman but his shallowness on policy is downright painful to see.
I think gaffes like this have as much or more to do with his slide than the allegations,at least among conservatives.
I think he is done. Newt is the natural beneficiary and no one will accuse him of being clueless on policy.
Might be fun to nominate him just to see liberal heads asplode.

Actually, I think anyone would have answered these questions better. This is one reason I have a hard hard time supporting Cain. He is so unprepared, and is completely gaffe-prone.
Just say no to Cain.

Leaving aside running for office, I’m beginning to wonder whether Cain should be entitled to vote.
Who talked this guy in to running? Did he lose a bar bet or did Mark Block triple-dog-dare Cain into running?
When Perry initially imploded, I drifted to Cain, but I soon realized that he’s a mirage too.
Who picks up his support?
BuckeyeSam on November 14, 2011 at 5:43 PM
A gaffe is a gaffe. They all do them. I didn’t pile on Perry for his, which WAS worse, due to when it happened. Won’t pile on this one either. Sorry AP, you are wrong on that.
That said, I am a Cain supporter, but I have to admit my faith has been shaken bit by bit. I am definitely feeling the movement to Gingrich. Baggage or no, he at least he can articulate of clear message. And that may be all it takes this election to win. Gingrich/Cain 2012?
tottoritodd on November 14, 2011 at 5:43 PM
Good point. I think even Mr. Sean “I Parrot Talking Points” Hannity could answer that question better.
terryannonline on November 14, 2011 at 5:43 PM
I’d disagree about Bachmann’s ability to discuss issues. She does get sidetracked into impedimenta like the Gardasil nonsense, but as she demonstrated the other night, when given the chance she provided excellent responses to Qs on the GWOT, the ‘stans, and Iraq.I don’t believe she’s POTUS material at this time, but I’d trust her in the cabinet or as a WH high level staffer.
xkaydet65 on November 14, 2011 at 5:43 PM
Yeah, yikes. I like Cain, and was hopeful that he’d prove to be the real deal, but week after week he continues to look….. weak.

jimver on November 14, 2011 at 5:45 PM
Unfortunately, that’s the rub. A good number of HA commenters could field these questions better than Cain. If there is a most likeable guy contest somewhere, let’s nominate him. But for potus? No way.
Kataklysmic on November 14, 2011 at 5:45 PM
Done
Perry or newt now.
blatantblue on November 14, 2011 at 5:45 PM
Yes, as one of those most-likely former supporters this is that issue where his support will evaporate. His gaffe was worse than Perry’s, but not for the reasons you’re implying – Perry was in the single-digits when he made his gaffe, so in relative terms he lost little, a poor man made a bit more poor, whereas Cain’s gaffe is anchor that will take him from the mountaintop to the depths of the ocean, numbers wise.
On a happier note, at least he revealed this now instead of during a debate with the POTUS.

If Cain collapses, Newt rises. But watch Perry, because Newt’s positions in the past have been rather centrist. I’m thinking in January we’re going to have a Romney / Gingrich / Perry horserace.

I would nominate Lynn Swann before this guy if you just had to have a minority which we don’t. let’s pick someone who can beat BO. Frankly I don’t know who that is but it isn’t Cain. Put a gun to my head and it’s Newt over any of the others at this point.

I am not piling on, the campaign trail is grueling, it’s the media that wants them all to perform like trained circus seals. Human beings are not robots.
People can critique them to spin it into something. I don’t have to spin a man who has to use dueling teleprompters to give a speech. It’s is what it is.
Dr Evil on November 14, 2011 at 5:48 PM
How is that a gaffe? If some of them weren’t bankrupting the state, Walker wouldn’t have a problem with the ones that didn’t.
And as far as Libya, does anyone know what Obama’s stance on them is. It probably depends on who he is talking to.
Sorry, but you are letting the leftists win by allowing their character assassination of Cain to influence how you see him. Unless you are really just a hard supporter of one of the other candidates and want Cain to lose. But I think he could take the White House, if people wouldn’t let the smears influence them. I mean, look at the guy in the White House now. He couldn’t even speak without all the words being on a teleprompter, and you are going to let someone with some integrity fall because he is not a spit and polished politician, who knows all the right things to say, but, as we know, doesn’t always do them?!

If Cain’s not talented and knowledgeable for POTUS he shouldn’t be eligible for VPOTUS. True most aren’t ready, save Cheney and Bush 41 in recent times, but even dumb Joe knows the govt and how it works. Mr. Cain,it appears, has no clue beyond his mantras and his web page. There are many quotes there that seem spot on, but I’ve not heard any impromptu or even planned public appearances that demonstrate that the policies on his page weren’t written by someone else for internet consumption.

Hoe could you have a talk show for so many years yet still be ignorant willfully or otherwise about foreign affairs? On public employee unions perhaps Cain is being more reticent because of what just happened in Ohio. But that is giving him a huge leap of faith.

Cain simply doesn’t know what he’s talking about on a wide sweep of issues, and the loyalty of his supporters doesn’t alter that basic fact. I have no idea how he can be so ignorant given that this is his second run for president and he ran for senator in Georgia in 2004. He clearly chooses not to know what most people on Hotair do know.
