Open thread: Who’s up for a Saturday night GOP debate on foreign policy?
posted at 7:15 pm on November 12, 2011 by Allahpundit
Yes, this is really happening. 8 p.m. ET on CBS. As a concession to how low public interest is likely to be, especially head to head with Oregon/Stanford, CBS won’t carry the whole debate. It’ll run for 90 minutes but they’re cutting out at 9 p.m. for … a re-run of “NCIS.” If you want to watch the last half hour, switch over to CBSNews.com or National Journal. Perfectly fitting treatment for a key policy subject that’s been mostly an afterthought this year.
In lieu of a “Quote of the Day,” here’s your thread to follow along. National Journal’s compiled “dossiers” on each of the candidates’ positions, but realistically, casual viewers are watching this for three reasons — to see if Gingrich challenges Romney, to be there in case Perry or Cain commits another brutal gaffe, and to enjoy the fireworks from the inevitable Ron Paul/Rick Santorum argument over whether Iranian archterrorists with nuclear missiles is something we should worry about. I’m actually less curious about their answers than I am about the priority of the questions. Do you start with Iran tonight or with the Eurozone meltdown? Do you tempt the field to dump on Obama for ordering a pullout from Iraq, knowing that fully 77 percent of the public supports that decision? And how long do you wait before the inevitable softball about The One and Sarkozy badmouthing Netanyahu? Newt, for one, is itching to swing at that pitch.
To get you warmed up, a vignette from the campaign trail earlier this afternoon:
Donning a rhinestone “PERRY 2012″ pin on her sweater, Anita Perry knocked on doors on the tree-lined Fairlane Drive here in South Carolina this morning, pressing residents to consider voting for her husband in this presidential election…
“Maybe he won’t stumble tonight,” [a local] woman told Perry as she walked down the steps of her home.
“I hope not,” Perry answered with a laugh.
“That’s OK, that was quite fun. I think it showed he was human-like,” the woman said.
And how is the human-like candidate himself “preparing”? Here’s a photo. Dude, I’m nervous.

Thank you Gracie. The “Israel” blooper is already all over twitter and the internet. I can’t wait for his further explanation.
And as far as this foreign policy stuff goes……….look at the promises King Barry made during the 2008 campaign i.e. closing Gitmo etc. And look at what has happened after King Barry got to the Oval Office and got to peek under the hood. He is still basically following many of Bush’s policies.
Sometimes I think some of the foreign policy stuff really is on the job training.
Knucklehead on November 12, 2011 at 11:30 PM
Nope… it shows Perry still remains a threat to both party establishments. He is the one they fear.
They were hoping he would ‘die’ already but he is still alive and kicking so their frustration grow.
Now they will like to make a gaffe where there is none and judging by what they tried doing with his “Social Security is a Ponzi scheme” statement, it will end with many agreeing with his statement.

We didn’t go out of our way to arrest them either. American citizens were impressed on British ships in the War of 1812 and they were fired on without hesitation. Tokyo Rose could have been killed in an air raid and nobody would have cared. Citizenship doesn’t protect you from the consequences of belligerency.

Ugly. Actually how many pizza guys who have never held political office would do as well as Herman did tonight? He held his own even if he was smooth as silk. That is not pathetic.Instead of insulting someone who has the guts to be on that stage and go toe to toe with people who have been in politics for decades, why don’t you just say you would never vote for a non-politician for President and leave it at that?
txmomof6 on November 12, 2011 at 11:38 PM
and the funny thing is Perry avoided answering the question that was asked and launched into this “cut foreign aid to 0″ with Romney and Newt lapping it up. Then he had to walk it back when the moderator mentioned Israel. He can’t win for losing…and he also doesn’t know what he’s talking about. None of them do except maybe Huntsman ’cause he’s been on the other side.

Once again, you’re talking about them being killed on the battlefield. Which, once again raises questions of problems associated with declaring war on non-geographic enitites. But put that aside for a second.
Let us say that instead of broadcasting from Tokyo, Aquino had broadcast from Madrid, a neutral country in the war, but one unlikely to arrest her for American treason charges.
Would the US have been justified in issuing a death warrant on her, and carrying it out on Spanish soil? And would the courts and the people have stood still for that?
JohnGalt23 on November 12, 2011 at 11:40 PM
That didn’t take long. From your link..

Schad, it’s not about hating Israel. It’s not about hating Taiwan or South Korea either. It’s about a coherent policy. A rational policy. Making South Korea earn foreign aid by placing them in the same category as Pakistan is just not very rational. Either cut it all permanently or selectively make cuts.

He said Israel would get the aid. He can include all aid receiving nations. Those that support the US and her interests get aid. Those who don’t…won’t! At least that is the way I preceived what he said.
I imagine Israel would play along if it helps defund their enemies.
tmontgomery on November 12, 2011 at 11:45 PM
The “zero aid/Israel” answer wasn’t a blooper: the first time Perry said it, he made it clear that everyone would start at zero and then show why they should receive US $$ in aid; when he was asked about Israel, he answered that they’re special and would get aid — which is what he meant when he said that contries would have to prove that they should receive our $$.

Rick Perry didn’t fall off of the stage.

Defender of Jerusalem Award
Fri, 08/14/2009 – 12:42pm
****************************
This week Governor Perry traveled to Jerusalem where he received the Defender of Jerusalem Award. Created in 2008 by Guma Aguiar, head of the Lillian Jean Kaplan Foundation, the award tributes dignitaries from around the world who have demonstrated strong support for the people of Israel.
“I have long supported the right of a Jewish state to exist in the Middle East, ” said Gov. Perry. “After visiting several sacred and historic sites, meeting with business, civic and government leaders and seeing the day-to-day lives of the people on my trips to Israel, I am even more convinced that a safe, secure Israel is an essential part of stability in this part of the world.”
Texas, Israel’s fourth-largest American trading partner, has built a strong
economic relationship with Israel, especially within the agriculture and natural resource industries. During a visit in 2007, Gov. Perry helped launch the Texas-Israel Chamber of Commerce was created to help launch future commercial interests and solidify the strong business and cultural connections between the two states.

Brad Huntsman may deserve all your witty snark. But his three daughters, appearing on Hannity earlier this week and on Geraldo tonight, are attractive, funny and charming.
Perry was smart in answering the same questions given to the perceived top tier, thus fighting the MSM’s attempt to render him irrelevant. Americans love to root for the underdog who succeeds in improving. That is the original premise of contests like American Idol and the reason Clay Aiken and Elliott Yamin became so popular during their seasons. Perry may benefit from the same phenonenom if he continues to perform competently and display his self-effacing humor balanced by assertive replies to debate questions.

Perry receives award in Israel
Economic Development Campaign Update
August 13, 2009
*******************
Associated Press
AUSTIN, Texas — Gov. Rick Perry has accepted the Defender of Jerusalem Award, given to public figures who have demonstrated support for the state of Israel.
Perry, whose office said he was still in Israel on Thursday, also met with President Shimon Peres, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and business and academic leaders during his trip.
He traveled to Israel Sunday and is scheduled to return to Texas on Saturday.
Doheny Global Group, an investment company, is paying for the trip, Perry’s office said Thursday.
The Defender of Jerusalem Award was created in 2008 by Guma Aguiar, head of the Lillian Jean Kaplan Foundation.
Perry has made previous trips to Israel. He emphasizes business connections between Israel and Texas through the Texas-Israel Chamber of Commerce, his office said.

Exactly. Plus, Perry is the BIGGEST friend of Israel up on that stage. This will give him a chance to show off his credentials, like his “Defender of Jerusalem” award from ’09 and how he met with Peres and Netanyahu when he accepted it. Perry stood with Bob Turner and the orthodox that day not too long ago for a press conference. American Zionists know this about him.
Aslans Girl on November 13, 2011 at 12:08 AM
You two are lacking in logic. Perry is completely pro Israel. You are bashing him on what is not one of his fleas. Only the left do such. I’m very sorry for you because I like you a lot. Don’t feel sorry for me. And I never claimed Perry isn’t pro-Israel. As I keep pointing out, his idea is an illogical one. You don’t place Israel in the same category as Pakistan and make her “earn” the aid.
Either get rid of foreign aid or make an executive decision and start cutting aid to the nations that shouldn’t get it.
Exactly. Stealing a line from Knucklehead, he shot from the hip. Sounds good. Yeah, Perry is against giving foreign aid to the slime balls! But when you sort of sit down and think about it, it becomes a convoluted mess.
Who is really going to make Israel, Taiwan, South Korea, and others prove their worth? On top of that, you’d have to be in Ron Paul territory to completely cut off Pakistan (a nuclear power). This is just not prudent for someone wishing to maintain a strong US presence around the world.

I was thinking more like they could show how many bucks they sent into the system to somehow earn the subsidy. It seems pretty straight forward, no?

Except for the hoops required to be here legally. Really, stop while you are ahead. Perry had a good night, don’t remind people why they have a problem with him. Let him bask in the glow for a little while.

Currently not living behind enemy lines (Ugh… time to change residency).
But I can say from experience, being a hardcore conservative in a solid blue state makes you really think about things. It’s so easy to just take that blue pill and not wake up.

To employ a Cainism, Perry is just not thinking clearly about apples and oranges.

That’s quite a nice thing to hear coming from you. You’ve long been one of my favorite posters.

I didn’t bring it up. Meaty did and presented it completely dishonestly by calling it “aid”, which it’s not.
Aslans Girl on November 13, 2011 at 12:31 AM
That would be a nightmare for Perry.
BTW, to sort of change the topic. Perry is supposed to be the one going after Mitt; though, in my opinion, he isn’t up to the task.
Are we going to hear him go after Mitt’s bit about China stealing our jobs? Mitt’s veiled threats at a trade war? I mean, aren’t Perry and Mitt both disciples of Friedman?

Knucklehead has become that which she feared and derided the most – a cultist akin to some of the most rabid Palinistas and Paulnuts that Hot Air has ever seen.
She was one of those that used to lambast the most extreme Palinistas for their inability to see reason and their blind devotion to Palin.
Alas it only took one man – Cain – to get her to drop her reason and become a cultist. It’s official – Knucklehead is no longer a Cainiac but a Cainista.
LOL…

Until you can prove otherwise it’s a subsidy. If it’s not a subsidy, you’re paying for someone else’s subsidy. That’s how socialism works.

Careful there. Not all of us can attain True Believer status on the interwebz.

I know he did, but it was just a little snark. Chill. We should all be in this together to defeat the One.

I agree with your assessment-but I’m not laughing.
It makes me sad.

And, may I add, get a reasonably conservative guy/gal nominated. Someone that knows the issues and can defend/promote them.
