Cain: I wouldn’t be Romney’s VP — but I’d consider being his secretary of defense

posted at 10:02 pm on November 11, 2011 by Allahpundit

Via Mediaite, what do you think? You think the famously cautious Romney would be willing to start his term with a nasty confirmation hearing featuring lots of mud-slinging by Democrats about sexual harassment? You think a President Perry or President Gingrich would be any more eager for that? (Newt seems more inclined towards a John Bolton type, which would present problems of a different sort.) Ironically, Cain’s a better prospect for VP now than he is for a cabinet position precisely because that’s the only path to power left for him that would avoid the need for congressional approval.

Here’s a list of Romney’s foreign policy and national security advisors, incidentally. Chertoff, Hayden, Cofer Black: All respect to Cain for his Navy work, but somehow I don’t see President Mitt installing an establishment outsider atop the defense pyramid when he has a stable like that. Given his economic focus and personal charm, Cain would be better off with an ambassadorship. What about Ubeki-beki-beki-beki-stan-stan? (Yes, I know, ambassadors need to be confirmed too.)

Herman Cain Sexual Harassment Scandal: What Hollywood Is Saying
***************************************************************

GOP Presidential candidate Herman Cain came under fire once again on Monday when attorney Gloria Allred held a press conference introducing a fourth woman accusing Cain of sexual harassment.

Hollywood spoke out on Twitter about the fourth accuser coming forward.

- ““Next Godfather’s Pizza promotion: if Herman Cain doesn’t harass you within 30 minutes, your pizza is free” – Joy Behar

- “Things are getting pretty rough for Presidential candidate Herman Cain. A new poll found that Herman Cain’s approval has dipped five points since the news of the sexual harassment scandal broke. Even worse, as soon as Cain promised to get it back up, he was slapped with another sexual harassment suit” – Jimmy Fallon

- “Big announcement from Herman Cain today. He’s leaving the Tea Party and joining the T and A party” – Jay leno

- “If I have this correctly, I believe what Herman Cain is saying is ‘no means no….I know what you’re gonna say … you’re gonna say look at how Herman Cain is dressed, with that suit, surrounded by all those microphones, he’s asking for it. ‘It,’ of course, being heightened media scrutiny.” – Jon Stewart

- “NOBODY is happier than Herman Cain that the #conradmurray trial verdict is in…time to get his story tight. How do u think he will respond?” – Holly Robinson Peete

- “Just realized that Herman Cain is an anagram for Reachin’ man.” – Steve Martin

- “With all this negative attention on Herman Cain right now, I’ll bet Little Caesar is grabbing boobs like there’s no tomorrow.” – Conan O’Brien

Alright, I wrote this earlier today and I’m going to re-post it since Cain has confirmed all of my suspicions with this interview:

I just don’t get the impression that Cain is nearly as committed to making sure Romney is not the nominee as I am. He is not willing to do what it takes to stop Romney, but Romney will do what it takes to stop Cain. Cain has turned the other cheek to Romney’s repeated jabs at him and attacked single-digit Rick Perry instead. Its like he is already auditioning for VP or a cabinet position in a Romney administration. I trust Gingrich to fight for the win.

nickj116 on November 11, 2011 at 10:06 PM

Maybe he meant to say Energy, but couldn’t remember.

On a slightly more serious note, it makes sense why he wouldn’t wanna be either Mittens or Perry’s VP. Dude will be 66 come Inauguration Day 2013. So considering he obviously wouldn’t be the GOP nominee in 2016 if a Republican is President, and he won’t run at age 74 in 2020, what would be the point of sitting around doing nothing as VP(barring anything bad happening to Romney of course)?

He’d be much better served as a member of the cabinet, although Defense is the last place he’ll be.

I’d consider Bolton, Petraeus, or even Rice before Cain as SecDef, no matter who wins the top spot. Cain is more a SecTreas type. But this exercise does prove Cain is not the Anti-Romney folks might think he is. How hard are you gonna go after Romney if you want to be in his Cabinet?

The way all candidates are melting away except Romney, makes one wonder if he is the Anti-Christ. Please, say it ain’t so, any Republican except Romney.

If Romney is the nominee, I guarantee Obama’s re-election. Good-bye our beloved America. :0(

purgatory on November 11, 2011 at 10:40 PM

And of all the cabinet positions, Cain picked Secretary of Defense? *Face palm…

TheRightMan on November 11, 2011 at 10:41 PM

Exactly how is he qualified to be Secretary of Defense? This is the same guy who doesn’t know China has nukes?

ButterflyDragon on November 11, 2011 at 10:20 PM

Well he has actually worked for the Defense Dept. before. Try listening to the audio.

txmomof6 on November 11, 2011 at 10:23 PM

Oh don’t be silly! You might actually understand what was said by Cain and the question he was asked! That’s not as fun as listening to the alternate universe posts like “He’s not in it to win”, or “Cain is Romney’s BFF” or “Why would Cain choose Secetary of Defense when he is a front runner- he must know he can’t win.”

Showing your arse again? Trying listening before bloviating with your same old tired crap. It makes you look more foolish than you already are.

Allapundit you are irrelevant. You’re hit post won’t stop the Cain Train. You reveal your impotence in having to distort a radio interviewer’s hypothetical question. And for those in this comment section who somehow hate Herman Cain, I feel sorry for you all. How could anyone who is conservative hate Herman Cain? Seriously.

OK, I took the aboves’ advice. I listened to the clip. Gotta say, Allah is kinda laying an egg over something tiny.

1) Cain is not really qualified for DoD. I have no doubt he could manage, but any reasonable president would pick someone else.

2) But, Cain’s points seem to be twofold. First, he supports DoD and he’s pointing out his (imo) limited background with DoD. Secondly, he’s trying to appear stronger on foreign policy – which is fine.

3) As to the point about him rejecting a Romney VP, he made a great point. Why work directly under Romney trying to pimp out Romney’s economic plan (which Cain disagrees with)? I’m glad to see Cain separate himself from Romney.

I still probably wouldn’t have gone with DoD … but Cain didn’t step in it here.

MeatHeadinCA on November 11, 2011 at 10:43 PM

Cain didn’t step in it here.

MeatHeadinCA on November 11, 2011 at 10:43 PM

But I kind of did.

MeatHeadinCA on November 11, 2011 at 10:44 PM

Like I sez, your average Friday night in DC. Or Chicagoland. Or Motown.

It’s safer to live in Afganistan than the above places I think.

The Cain campaign continues onward……

That’s ok, Meathead, get on the train, already.

balkanmom on November 11, 2011 at 10:45 PM

When Cain said that he would not have any Muslims in his administration (although he did walk back that some when under withering fire) he showed, by that one act alone, and beyond shadow of doubt, that his knowledge of foreign policy is far superior to that of Bush, Rice, Obama, Clinton, Petraeus, Casey and the whole G-d damned Pentagon combined. Cain may not know that much about foreign policy but at least what he does know is not all wrong and anti-American and he is not spending American Blood and Treasure to support and suck up to Islam and I doubt that he ever would.

InkyBinkyBarleyBoo on November 11, 2011 at 10:45 PM

Cain will drop out and endorse Slippers Mittens.

Connie on November 11, 2011 at 10:46 PM

Why did he feel pressed to announce this?

TheRightMan on November 11, 2011 at 10:36 PM

He was asked a hypothetical question and gave a straight answer. Personally, I think he was trying to use it as a way to beef up his foreign policy cred, but he didn’t really announce anything.

MeatHeadinCA on November 11, 2011 at 10:46 PM

Why would they do that? It just so much more fun to pile on Cain by making idiotic statements without even listening. I heard him talking somewhat about this on Cavuto this afternoon.

Which happened to be a very good interview especially when he explained the “Politico warned him for 10 days” and why Cain didn’t respond.

Knucklehead on November 11, 2011 at 10:30 PM

+1

balkanmom on November 11, 2011 at 10:45 PM

I gotta say, I’m sorta on the Newt train right now; but Cain actually gave a strong interview. I’m a little surprised AP is making a fuss over this. You couldn’t get a bad sound clip out of this.

MeatHeadinCA on November 11, 2011 at 10:47 PM

I still probably wouldn’t have gone with DoD … but Cain didn’t step in it here.

way he talks and handles himself, with Perry/Mittens
the MSM will have endless material to work with!:)
