Romney: Allegations against Cain must be “addressed seriously”
posted at 2:30 pm on November 8, 2011 by Ed Morrissey
Was it wise for Mitt Romney to offer any opinion on Herman Cain’s campaign crisis? Romney tells George Stephanopoulos in an interview today that he finds the allegations “serious” and particularly disturbing,” although Romney declines to answer whether they are disqualifying if true. All he says in that regard is that Cain has to address the allegations directly:
Mitt Romney today for the first time characterized sexual harassment allegations facing fellow GOP candidate Herman Cain as “particularly disturbing.”
“These are serious allegations, George,” said Romney in an exclusive interview with George Stephanopoulos that aired on ABC News and Yahoo. ”And they’re going to have to be addressed seriously. I don’t have any counsel for Herman Cain or for his campaign, they have to take their own counsel on this.”
“Any time there is an accuser that comes forward with charges of this nature you recognize this is a very serious matter and it should be taken seriously,” said Romney.
There is a strategic concept that argues against getting in the way of an opponent’s collapse, and for good reason. Let’s say Cain’s campaign survives these allegations and goes on to contend in Iowa. Will Romney’s commentary help him convince Republican voters to peel away from Cain? Almost certainly not; he’ll be seen as opportunist, and his comments an unnecessary shot while Cain was trying to defend himself. If the allegations end up sinking Cain, it won’t be because Romney spoke out, either, and it makes Romney less likely to convince former Cain supporters to support Romney instead. Granted, that’s not a terribly likely outcome, but that’s what Romney is supposedly campaigning to achieve, right?
Sometimes the best move one can make is to stay out of an argument, especially when one has no direct connection to the issue involved. All Romney needed to say here was, “I’m concentrating on my own campaign, and you should direct those questions to Mr. Cain.” Or to paraphrase one elder statesman a few years back, Romney missed a good opportunity to shut up.

Mitt has enough relatives to win a couple primary states.

What a spineless contemptible sniveling weasel. I don’t think this main stream media collaborator deserves a vote for the general let alone the republican nomination.
This idiot doesn’t even understand one of the main rules of politics, if you opponent is collapsing stay out of the way.
If he’s our nominee I may just stay home. How disgusting. Here’s hoping for a third party.
drewmesq on November 8, 2011 at 5:31 PM
Good gravy Ed! Romney simply pointed out it was serious and had to be addressed. Do you think they aren’t serious and shouldn’t be addressed?
And your advice that Romney should just shut up would suggest that what he thinks is the truth would be damaging to him. He even said he made no judgment either way.

Newt gave a statement saying the same exact thing.
Wonder if there will be a front page blog?

For a candidate who has himself failed to address ANYTHING seriously, Romney seems to be full of advice for others.
Go run in the Democrat primary against Obama, Mitt…it’s where you belong.

And if he had said THAT there would be people on here criticizing him for those words and trying to spin it into something negative for Romney. The only difference between the above phrase and what he actually said is semantics.
But, I guess when you are looking for any reason to harp on Romney… why wait for a real one.

What a spineless schweinhund. The last thing we need is a liberal republican sell out in the white house.

I think what Mitt said was reasonable.
It wouldn’t be a good idea from the perspective of Cain as a rival. It would be better to go easy on Cain as he collapses, in order to pick up more of his supporters later.
But I don’t think Mitt is thinking of Cain anymore as a real rival. Cain is not organized to win and he won’t be the nominee.
Therefore Mitt will be seeing this as a sexual harassment case that requires him to show an awareness of women’s sensitivities. Thus he makes an appropriate noise. This will cover him if more allegations come out and prove credible. Mitt wasn’t coldly silent. That’s all he wants to establish.

AttilaTheHun: “I’m a Romney guy, but this was stupid. Ridiculous. He’d have done himself a favor by hammering the media for this very poorly sourced smear job on Cain.”
For winning the nomination? Yes. For winning the general? I don’t think so, and evidently Mitt doesn’t think so either.

I just posted a ton of links on Romney’s policies and Hot Air must not either allow that or they are reviewing them and will post them later…hmmmm….

Romney has addressed more policy than ANY candidate on the campaign and many of you fail to go read it. So I guess you can continue to THINK Romney has no principles. I challenge you all to read each of these links and tell me they are NOT conservative positions.
g2825m on November 9, 2011 at 1:15 AM
True True. Romney should stay quiet.
He certainly has handled it better than Cain has, and Perry for that matter. Both Cain and Perry foolishly started blaming others and a host of other amateur reactions.

It’s serious and should be addressed, except here at Hot Air where it’s never addressed. Oh wait!

Any time there is an accuser that comes forward with charges of this nature you recognize this is a very serious matter and it should be taken seriously,” said Romney.
Yep, another liberal position – what if the person is a crack addicted lying whore like in the Duke case?
No, such charges should not always be taken seriously.
The proper response was “I do not know any more about these allegations than is published in the papers. Next question.”
Mitt will never be President. He may be a nominee, but he and his supporters need to recognize that he cannot win in the general because the liberals already vote Democratic and Mitt will drive the conservatives away. So he’s left with the moderate conservatives and some independents who decide not to vote Obama again. Not a winner.

Yup Mitt, if I was in your position polling behind Cain, I would also be front and center spouting off those RINO talking points too. Herman is the recipient of a high tech lynching and the Republican leadership and others who like what they are witnessing are going to watch Herman get strung up and do what they can, without getting blamed, to help the Dems destroy Herman because they know, that Herman knows, he can win the nomination and the presidency without the establishment Republican support. I am a supporter of Herman Cain and I have stayed quiet while I observed the actions of the players in this planned destruction and read the reports. And the more this farce goes on, the more my resolve hardens around Cain. The establishment on BOTH SIDES has a lot to lose in a Cain victory and trumped up sexual harassment allegations is their weapon of choice to bring this “who does he think he is” and “has never held an elective office” novice coming into our HOUSE and taking charge.
Cain’s opponents think they are going to cause Cain to lose the lead he was enjoying before these allegations became public and thus, the primary but, in truth, it is us who are the real losers in all these tawdry allegations. Our system of governance is diminished when there is so much to be discussed concerning the very large issues of the day (never in my life have I witnessed so many national and international crisis taking place simultaneously) and here we are being dragged through the muck by sleazy, which is the norm, journalism. And when these allegations are proven false, Herman and others who are falsely accused still lose – because perception is reality for far too many people. And the accusers use their fifteen minutes of fame for – KA CHING $$$
