Holder to call for tighter gun control in Fast & Furious testimony tomorrow

posted at 9:58 pm on November 7, 2011 by Allahpundit

Why not? We pay for having a terrible federal government every day. Why should this be any different just because it involves lost rights instead of lost money?

Seriously, though, having Obama’s AG mumble about more gun regulation in front of a mic will accomplish two things. One: It’s bound to worry all sorts of swing-state gun owners in Pennsylvania and Ohio once word of his testimony gets around, which is all to the good for election day next year. Two: The more gun owners perk up about Holder’s testimony, the more public interest there’s bound to be in Fast & Furious. And hey — there actually is room for a smart new gun law here if Congress is willing to take it up. I call it the “DOJ Shouldn’t Walk Guns to Psychotic Mexican Drug Cartels Act of 2011.” The text reads, in full, “The DOJ shouldn’t walk guns to psychotic Mexican drug cartels.”

I’m thinking that would be a party-line vote in the House.

“Today, I would like to correct some of the inaccurate — and irresponsible — accusations surrounding Fast and Furious,” Holder’s prepared testimony reads. “Some of the overheated rhetoric might lead you to believe that this local, Arizona-based operation was somehow the cause of the epidemic of gun violence in Mexico. In fact, Fast and Furious was a flawed response to, not the cause of, the flow of illegal guns from the United States into Mexico.”

In his testimony, Holder also advocates for new gun-control laws that he says would have halted, or at least prevented, Operation Fast and Furious. Holder echoes California Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s comments from last week, when she argued that stricter gun laws would have stopped law enforcement agents from facilitating the sale of guns to Mexican drug cartels.

“Unfortunately, earlier this year the House of Representatives actually voted to keep law enforcement in the dark when individuals purchase multiple semi-automatic rifles and shotguns in Southwest border gun shops,” Holder’s written testimony declares. “Providing law enforcement with the tools to detect and disrupt illegal gun trafficking is entirely consistent with the constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens and it is critical to addressing the public safety crisis on the Southwest border.”

The idea that we need to regulate the wider population more tightly in order to prevent catastrophically moronic operations by the feds gives me a warm glow deep in my libertarian heart. And I do mean catastrophic: Watch this new clip from ace CBS reporter Sharyl Atkisson updating the death toll from gunwalking. It’s not just Brian Terry.

One of the senators should float all those terms that holder loves so much, accessory to murder, conspiracy to export firearms and treasonous acts and find out if he really knows what they mean.

tim c on November 8, 2011 at 7:18 AM

See there? It was a gun control ploy all along. Maybe not exclusively, but softening up the ground for gun control legislation was a key part of it.

Holder needs jail time.

Just because the whole Fast and Furious program kind of blew up in their face is no reason to scrap the endgame….. Come out strong for gun control and hope the media carries the ball for you.

Koa on November 7, 2011 at 10:07 PM

Exactly.

petefrt on November 8, 2011 at 7:28 AM

Waiting for someone to say to Holder, “You set up a secret program to kill people in order that you could push your political agenda. Mr. Holder, tell me why you shouldn’t be in jail for that?”

albill on November 8, 2011 at 7:42 AM

If Holder means to say in his testimony that Fast and Furious proves the government cannot be trusted with guns then I’m cool with that.

MTF on November 8, 2011 at 7:46 AM

Attorney General?

This guy can’t even qualify as an attorney corporal.

albill on November 8, 2011 at 7:42 AM

Excellent question.

And I am sure that Holder did this all on his own and Obama at no time was ever privy to it nor had any idea of what his attorney general was doing. Right?

Both should be facing federal criminal charges.

Murder is murder. Knowing about it and doing nothing is accessory to murder. Planning it and going along is conspiracy to commit murder.

OK, House of Representatives…let’s fulfill your Constitutional duties.

Now!

coldwarrior on November 8, 2011 at 7:51 AM

attorney corporal….heh! good one cw

ted c on November 8, 2011 at 7:56 AM

Oh, I fully agree that the country needs tighter gun control, and given the criminal histories, no-one from the DOJ, DEA, ATF or FBI should ever have access to a firearm again.

Siddhartha Vicious on November 8, 2011 at 7:56 AM

Holder is so friggin’ stupid and corrupt that it really is hard to believe sometimes.

AZCoyote on November 8, 2011 at 7:58 AM

Yes, more gun restrictions are called for….federal agents’ access to firearms should be severely curtailed.

curved space on November 8, 2011 at 8:04 AM

HOLDER wants tighter, more strict gun laws?! 1st, I believe he is just trying to distract people from the fact that he is a completely incompetent ‘toady’ who should already be in jail himself for PERJURY before Congress and out of a job at the very least! 2ndly, just like a Liberal, Holder seeks to impose new laws rather than enforcing the existing ones! Start off by arresting Holder for perjury. Follow that up by firing him and Nepolitano for being completely incompetent idiots. While declaring the US border was more secure than any time before WHILE knowint the Federal government had just given Drug Cartels 2,000 guns and that 2 of her own agents had been killed by them, Nepolitano did NOT commit perjury. Yeah, she lied her butt off but did not committ perjury. If we fired people for lying, we would have to fire Obama for declaring the Border Fence was almost complete! Again, enforce the laws we have, fire the incompetent, lying boobs we have in office that are more concerned with appeasing illegals and covering their own backsides rather than the American people. And tthe next time the government wants to give/sell guns to Mexican Drug Cartel members, in the immortal words of Nancy Reagan, “Just say ‘No’!”

easyt65 on November 8, 2011 at 8:09 AM

We live in scary times. First Obama blasts the Israeli PM over a live mic that he claims he did not know was live. Insanity. Now Holder, the most corrupt and incompetent attorney general in our history, wants stricter gun control because of a debacle under his watch that resulted in murders of innocent victims. This is a nightmare that we may not wake up from.

volsense on November 8, 2011 at 8:19 AM

Yes, more gun restrictions are called for….federal agents’ access to firearms should be severely curtailed.

curved space on November 8, 2011 at 8:04 AM

Close. Any Federal Agency that is suspected of allowing guns to be purchased against current laws should be immediately suspended until the investigation is concluded by a Special Prosecutor. It should be considered criminal conspiracy and include Cabinet and Presidential penalties. (ie Holder and Obama should be impeached and go to jail for it.)

barnone on November 8, 2011 at 8:20 AM

So if you would just pass the strict gun control laws we want, we wouldn’t be forced to carry out these insane operations intended to put automatic weapons in the hands of psychotic Mexican drug cartels.

mbs on November 8, 2011 at 8:57 AM

But you forced border state gun dealers to sell to straw dealers and then you let the gun walk to narco-terrorists without surveillance, but what we need is tougher gun laws? This is beyond Orwellian!! Holder deserves all the contempt, ridicule that he will receive today and more.

mwbri on November 8, 2011 at 9:02 AM

Maybe we should do away with free speech, because Bill Clinton’s little bagboy was caught soliciting bribe money.

MNHawk on November 8, 2011 at 9:03 AM

straw dealer should be straw buyers.

mwbri on November 8, 2011 at 9:04 AM

The gun trade is going to remain out of control while Holder is in charge of the DOJ, if past is prelude. I doubt the gun shipments have stopped. Cui bono?

listens2glenn on November 8, 2011 at 9:18 AM

Lost rights? That phrase even belittles the reality that they are going to take away our guns if we allow them. What will they do to us without guns if they act like flagrant dictators while we have them? This man allowed or caused the murder of many innocent people with his gun runner set up and ought to be prosecuted for it -instead, we get the daring confidence of a 1930′s German official – having taken power and is ready to use it.

The GOP is either a collective group of cowards or they are acquiescing to this as part of the same ruling class. In either case, we are on the precipice to totalitarianism here in America and we will be the first democracy(republic) in history that willingly gave freedom away for a control state.

To this day, not one major GOP leader has attacked Obama for his comment about a civilian army equal to the military -never mind what should have happened then -impeachment.
Those who think a mild puppet like Romney can or will even try to stop this are living in fantasyland.

Don L on November 8, 2011 at 9:21 AM

So, essentially, Holder and Feinstein are saying, “See what you made us do?”

RebeccaH on November 8, 2011 at 9:28 AM

Now Holder, the most corrupt and incompetent attorney general in our history…

Agreed. And that’s no trivial achievement for a history that includes the likes of John Mitchell, Ramsey Clark and Janet Reno.

Barnestormer on November 8, 2011 at 9:43 AM

Sharyl Atkisson deserves a Pulitzer for her investigative work on this story.

Abby Adams on November 8, 2011 at 9:51 AM

Do it, Holder! Attack the 2nd Amendment and see how that plays out for the Dems in November 2012!!!

Bob in VA on November 8, 2011 at 10:09 AM

They tried floating the Bush started it with Op Wide Receiver, but that little piggie just didn’t seem to sprout wings for them. Now they’ve come up with gosh darn it, we just needed stricter gun laws to prevent this? How would stricter laws have prevented the all powerful govt from doing what it wanted to do? They run rough shod over us every day and are now promising to reform entitlements but need to raise taxes to do it. How ’bout stop spending money we don’t have, guys. Add Chu to the list of corrupt leaders and we’ll have a more complete list. I’m sure it will be added to at some point.

Kissmygrits on November 8, 2011 at 10:20 AM

“Providing law enforcement with the tools to detect and disrupt illegal gun trafficking is entirely consistent with the constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens

What this really means is that abridging the 2nd amendment is perfectly constitutional, because criminals are engaging in criminal activity.

I beg to differ.

Atkisson hasn’t broken a single important development.

The real work has been done by David Codrea, Mike Vanderboegh, Bob Owens, and Robert Farago. But they are just bloggers, so it is ok to steal their work.

Howzabout we cut to the chase and get some tighter DOJ control?

tom on November 8, 2011 at 12:38 PM

I think Holder and Nepolitano should be forced to patrol the SWern Border, tasked with recovering all 2,000 guns lost to the Mexican Drug Cartels, until all of those weapons have been recovered. Now THAT would be ‘justice’!
