Brilliant new ad explains why Obama needs to go
posted at 11:35 am on November 7, 2011 by Ed Morrissey
It’s hard to tell whether this is a message from Team Obama or from the Republican National Committee. If we don’t give Obama a second term, we have an opportunity to roll back all of his policies? Sign me up!
Jim Geraghty wonders the same:
One is tempted to ask, what “progress” are they talking about?
The 9 percent unemployment? The $3.43 per gallon gas in November? Freddie Mac needing another bailout?
The fact that 5 million U.S. households are either in foreclosure or delinquent on their mortgage, and 11 million homeowners owe more than their homes are worth? The fact that nearly 49 million Americans, almost 15 percent of the U.S., is currently on food stamps?
The angry young people camping in public parks and fighting with police?
Solyndra? Fast and Furious?
Actually, it looks to me like the ad promises that defeating Obama will put an end to camping in public parks. That’s exactly what happens in the ad — the lights go off and the park is emptied out so that everyone else can use it. Again, I’m totally on board with this outcome.
The ad reveals the core election strategy for Team Obama — fear. “Oooh, without me, America will be scary!“ This strategy comes as no surprise, because after Obama’s record of incompetence and failure, fear is all they have left.

The message is: “Do you really want to concede that you were wrong in 2008? That your adoration was dumb and blind? Or do you want the opportunity to save face on the chance that things go better in a second term?” That’s all he has going for him–the ego and pride of himself and his supporters.

The great historic achievement they speak of in this ad will never be wiped out. Of course, that achievement is the election of a person with specific genetic information. That will never be undone, unless history decides to start calling Obama “white” which is about as true as calling him “black”.
Nothing else that happened in the 2008 election was particularly earth-shattering. Obama has governed as a big-government Democrat, another in a long line of big-government Democrats. Obamacare is a logical next step of the liberal goal of creating a centralized government that rules every aspects of individual life.

Actually, I’ve been kind of assuming of late that Obama will be re-elcted just because the Republican field is so weak. But this ad gives me hope.
I haven’t seen it yet in any of the commentary, but what strikes me about this ad is just how much and after all this time, Obama thinks that all that matters is him.
Just him. That’s the message here. If “we” don’t win, you don’t get any more of my wonderfulness.
No one buys that anymore. No one. Not even his enablers in the media buy that anymore.
If that’s what he’s going to sell, he’s going to lose, to just about anyone.
Typhoon on November 7, 2011 at 12:38 PM
The ad shows nothing but adoring crowds of Obamabots from 2008 who voted for a cult of personality, so I’m assuming that “progress” is the mere fact that The Won was elected based on nothing more than the insipid promise of Hopenchange. Obama is the progress, or something.
RadClown on November 7, 2011 at 12:39 PM
Who created this ad? The republicans or the democrats? If it is a democratic ad it is the stupidest ad I have ever seen as it completely makes barack look like a do-nothing hack. If it is a republican ad it is brilliant as it completely makes barack look like a do-nothing hack.
Either way it is excellent.

Sad to say, but I think this will be effective with all those who voted for him out of pure emotion (which, honestly, was almost EVERYONE who voted for him). He was not elected based on his qualifications as a leader. He was elected because everyone wanted (desperately) something to feel good about. They really thought if they just elected Obama the world would change. He was to be so post-racial, so inspiring, people would willingly give their wealth over to be redistributed…gosh, I’m almost choked up. But then reality hit. The independents who were caught up will be less affected by this than in 2008, but some will peel away from common sense because, hey, it was the coolest thing ever to vote for the first black president. Yes, the race card. I played it. But it’s more than that. People were really tired of petty partisanship (but not all partisanship is petty), the mean-spirited sniping between politicians, the wars (yep, it’s true). America was depressed, in a way, and was looking for some therapy. So Obama promised sweetness and light and just enough people bought it. McCain was dim, Obama bright. And if we could get the “racist history of America” off our backs at the same time, well there you go. Perfect storm. Now that Obama has an actual record, it will be harder to build that same sort of emotional response, but it will work on some. I truly hope it works on significantly less than 50% come next November.

Al-Ozarka on November 7, 2011 at 1:07 PM
There are ad execs across America frothing at the mouth, hoping the phone will ring. How many times do you get to use your opponent’s (competition’s) own ad campaign for your ad campaign.
If the RNC does not pick up this fumble and run it into the end zone, they should be stripped and paraded naked down Broadway (thereby losing any hope of ever winning another election – it would not be a pretty sight).
The “Without Obama” campaign.
It’s a gift that can keep on giving, right through November, 2012.

I don’t buy it for a minute. The true believers you speak of here are camped out in Obamavilles now. So discouraged that they claim they’ll not indulge ever again in electoral politics.
Good for them.
The rest? It was a fad. It was a moment. It can’t be recaptured. And not only that, it wasn’t true. If you compare that day with today, the conclusion has to come that there must be something wrong with that picture…because it’s been three years and none of it came true. That was the party. The past three years have been the hangover.
And yet, to Obama, it’s not about any of that. It’s just about electing him. It’s not about anyone else and their life or their situation, it’s just about how wonderful it was that he was elected.
No one’s going to buy that. No one.
Typhoon on November 7, 2011 at 1:33 PM
