Video: Occupiers use kids to block DC Convention Center

posted at 9:45 am on November 5, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

Isn’t it great when families get together for quality time? Take a break from TV and game consoles and go out together for a fun evening, like strolling through the park, going to the zoo, or … blocking doors at political events? Stephen Gutowski found the toddler shields deployed at Occupy DC, and wondered what idiot would put two small children in harm’s way.

Meet Mom and a few of her friends:

Stephen reports that only one protester even questioned the decision to put children near the door — and she told Stephen that she probably shouldn’t give an interview. Everyone else insisted in loud and nearly incoherent voices that the AFP conference that took place was victimizing the children, and not Mom and the rest of the protesters that put them in the middle of a security scuffle. According to a later e-mail I got from Stephen, one DC street also started victimizing these same children, so our candidate for Mother of the Year put them in the middle of a blockade of the street.

John Hinderaker and Stacy McCain have more video from the AFP “Defending the American Dream” conference that Occupy DC targeted yesterday that shows the scope of the danger in which these toddlers were placed — danger, it must be noted, that came entirely from the Occupiers themselves.  Ed Frank looks at it from a different perspective in an interview he did with a wheelchair-bound woman who could not exit the convention center because Occupiers were blocking the exit:

The protesters are yelling, “This is what democracy looks like!”, but that’s absurd. There is a very big difference between democracy and mob rule, as the interview subject tells Frank. This is an attempt by a small coterie of radicals to silence free speech and free association through intimidation and threats of violence. Occupiers had every right to picket on the sidewalks; they have no right to block ingress or egress to the building.

And one has to wonder where the fire marshal was when this took place. Blocking egress from a building is a fire hazard, and had the DC Convention Center left construction materials in front of that door even for a short period of time, the facility would have faced fines and no small amount of shaming from the FD.  That made this a matter for the city’s police and fire departments, not for security around the facility.  If a fire had started in the building, there would have been a whole lot of people injured at those exits, including the two toddlers that Mommy Dearest apparently hopes to martyr for the cause.

Why be upset? This is who these people are. They are the same type of folks as those of Pol Pot’s killing fields, or Stalin’s starvation of Ukraine or Mao’s Cultural Revolution. They are willing even to sacrifice their own young children’s lives for “the cause.” Which is why they get along so well with Hamas.

The above video shows in greater detail how chaotic and dangerous it was for small kids. There is even a small dog they are using.

Blake on November 5, 2011 at 9:54 AM

At the beginning, these protesters were crying the blues over not getting enough media coverage. Well, they have it now.

The longer this goes on, the more desperate they’re gonna get to keep their protesting “valid”. If that means using small children, so be it.

Makes me sick.

I’ve never supported the use of machine guns to deal with crowd control, but this might be the exception.

Hening on November 5, 2011 at 9:57 AM

One of the reasons I’ve been unable to get to a TEA Party rally is because they always fall when I don’t have easy access to a sitter. Despite the fact they’re peaceful protests, my kids don’t belong at any political event. THEY’RE CHILDREN.

Which makes me a hell of a lot better as a mother than these people.

englishqueen01 on November 5, 2011 at 10:00 AM

If this isn’t child abuse and child endangerment then those crimes have no real meaning. These children should be taken away from their irresponsible parents and placed in good christian two parent home in suburbia.

Tommy_G on November 5, 2011 at 10:00 AM

Child abuse.

Plain and simple.

Child Protective Services – where the hell are you on this?!?!

KMC1 on November 5, 2011 at 10:01 AM

Those children need to be taken from the mother until she can show she has the ability to keep her children safe. To purposely put them in harms way is cruel. Does she love her ideology more then her own children? If so, she does not deserve to be their mother.

Didn’t Breitbart have an e-mail where it was acknowledged that the OWS protesters put the vulnerable at the front so that if something breaks bad in a confrontation with the authorities, they are right in the middle of it. That way, the d-heads can say “ZOMG, the cops are attacking [children, the elderly, the handicapped, etc.]

These are evil and manipulative people we are dealing with here. Make no mistake, they must be stopped.

Blake on November 5, 2011 at 10:03 AM

Kids – Mommy, can we go back to our warm home and watch cartoons?

Mom – No, you will sit there and like it, this is democracy!!

tommer74 on November 5, 2011 at 10:04 AM

The Left can be so transfixed by their political vision that they’re blinded to what they’re doing in the moment. I think of RFK: “I dream of things that never were, and ask why not?”. Using kids to block entrances. Huh? Why! They have their vision, which is WAY out there, and that’s their focus. Like, achieving social justice. So what if their kids get trampled.

Paul-Cincy on November 5, 2011 at 10:04 AM

If so, brings to mind Mideast terror groups using kids and the mentally retarded as suicide bombers, or of prison hierarchies or organized crime that use underlings to do their dirty work. Hardly Gandhi or MLK here.

Paul-Cincy on November 5, 2011 at 10:08 AM

Someone left the irony on.

Washington, DC IS the 1%. ALL of these protestors are living better than the rest of the country, and at our expense. For them to be protesting anything is downright comical. I’ll bet every one of those idiot parents with those little kids in tow lives in Takoma Park or some other lefty suburb around DC in a $500,000 house with two Priuses in the driveway. This is their idea of assuaging their constant liberal guilt by pretending to be part of “the 99%.”

The DC Convention Center management should have rounded up all the banquet managers, waiters and waitresses, cooks, valets, janitors, etc. and sent them out to tell these morons that every meeting, conference, and dinner held in Washington means JOBS for them!

In a word, yes.

Anyone who intentionally puts their children in harms way loves something — an ideology or otherwise — more than those children.

The protesters are yelling, “This is what democracy looks like!”, but that’s absurd. There is a very big difference between democracy and mob rule, as the interview subject tells Frank.

That depends on how exactly you are using the word “democracy”. Strictly speaking, democracy looks a lot like mob rule. It’s that there is a big difference between a democratic republic and democracy: namely, the rule of law.

Wander on November 5, 2011 at 10:16 AM

So let me get this straight….

Apparently, they set up a 501c3 CORPORATION to take in donations (yet they hate corporations)

Those donations added up to half a million bucks just in the first month (placing them well into the top 1%)

The corporation was set up in such a way as to not pay any taxes at all on their top 1% income (’nuff said)

I believe those donations have to go to a bank account (!!!)

Given their immediate proximity to wall street, could that bank account be in a wall street bank? (horrors!!!)

They insist on policing themselves, and the worst offenders amongst them (rapists and child abusers) get nothing more than a slap on the wrist, if that (think insider trading for the analogy)

When they find out they have competition (homeless people who are hungry or thieves) they demand the govt (cops) bail them out by limiting access to the park (that they don’t even own…kinda sounds like cronyism)

The competition “forces” them to stop serving italian baloney and instead “forces” them to serve everyone brown rice (saving the guys at the top tons of money)

And yet they hate corporations….hmmmmmmm

Jet they are evil

CW on November 5, 2011 at 10:19 AM

They’re not evil, they are tragically misled by professional agitators and organizers who have been at this a long time. Those people really don’t have any goals, they just jump from issue to issue and maintain their careers as professional agitators. We’ve seen them incarnated over the last 10 years as an “anti-globalization” movement, an “anti-war” movement, and now as an “Occupy” movement. Same sh!t, different day.

Now their footsoldiers are young people who have been tragically miseducated and brainwashed by the liberal professoriate in our colleges and universities, to believe that AmeriKKKa is a racist country run by plutocrats.

I don’t hate these kids, I feel sorry for them. They don’t even know what they don’t know. And they especially don’t know how badly they are being used by the cadre of professional organizers who could care less about them, or about inequality or anything else.

rockmom on November 5, 2011 at 10:27 AM

I took my 11 year old daughter to the DC Tea Party Rally on 20 MAR 2010 that was the day prior to the healthcare vote. I was a little concerned about the crowd, tension etc, but it was very civil and there were a lot of children there. Moreover, we werent there to confront some assembly like this where I would’ve put her in a risky position.

ted c on November 5, 2011 at 10:47 AM

“Where’s the Fire Marshal”? How about: “Where’s Child Protective Services?” Have them come down and take the child into protective custody and schedule a hearing on the mother’s fitness after she deliberately put her child in harm’s way.

Schedule it for January.

Yes. And will. The opportunities handed to republicans over the past few months are a feast — an utter embarrassment — of riches. The increasing vulgarity, idiocy, hypocricy, incoherence, violence and brazen social sedition of the Left — and the media’s nakedly obvious collusion — not only represent political opportunities for conservatives but call for a passionate defense of America and free-market capitalism. Where is it? The comments from our leading candidates for president range from vague admonitions to mealy empathy for the protestors. Where is the GOP? We’re being failed by EVERYBODY.

Because individual human beings aren’t precious and valuable to them (radical leftists, that is, not *all* liberals) – not even their own children. Where the “ends” are concerned, individuals are merely “means”.

It’s really as simple as that. HIstory bears that out and here it is on display yet again.

The smarter protesters left the field early on when they looked around and recognized that they were camping out with a bunch of criminals organized by ACORN and the unions. What we are left with is a crew of deeply disturbed individuals who show up for a per diem, free food and nookie in the tents. The protests have devolved into criminal activity and should be treated as such by authorities. We are losing control of the rule of law. Rack it.

Could it be that the Republican leadership believes that it will lose the public debate because Obama supports the OWS operation and the media supports Obama? Thanks. I’m going to try switching to my husband’s MAC and see if that works. I’ve had gazillions of annoying Windows Updates load today and despite restarts PC is acting kaflooey.

She’s still worried about your US Military memebers turning into violent terrorists.

The headlines write themselves, but I haven’t read any that have connected the dots. I mean OWS is based on the Arab Spring after all.

I was reading the Daily Caller article on this, and someone wanted to know, where all these intellectual protesters are coming from.

Another missing headline in the blogsphere. Where are these protesters coming from?

Craig’s list ads placed by ACORN. ACORN that Obama used to organize for. The same Obama that has received 1/3 of all Wall Street campaign donations to date.

The bloggers think that this is common knowledge, it’s just a given that people know. I would be repeating- saturating the ACORN connection, and Janet Napolitano’s description of man made terrorist, and the new left progressive’s 3rd world vision for the last super power. Is this the democrat’s vision for America, rabble rousing in the street? Is this what Americans deserve from their government? Their government is turning the mob lose on them, and have stopped enforcing the laws to protect the American public, and tax paper – their employer.

This didn’t work when Nixon was running for reelection he won in a landslide, and it looks like history is getting ready to repeat itself in 2012. I don’t know anyone in the middle class that is signing up for mob rule 101. These scenes at these so called protest are repellent to say the least.

Every time a allow Java to update it messes up my adblock on Firefox. I don’t need Java enough to put up with that.

Yeah, that whole sanctity of life thing is really confusing, isn’t it? Ask your candidate.
