Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on November 4, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

Department of Not Grasping The ConceptG-20 Division:

Obama, G-20, G20, gaffe, picture

Nicolas Sarkozy isn’t quite ready to pose in this picture, and Angela Merkel and the president of the UAE are not looking at the camera, but the rest of the leaders are waiting patiently for the photographer — including the unfortunate Manmohan Singh, prime minister of India, who now knows how the president of Mongolia felt last September.

Just in case you’ve forgotten Part I, here’s Brian Williams to explain it:

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

“Turns out he was the president of Mongolia”? Well, it was taken at the UN in a meeting of “world leaders,” so I’m not sure why that should be a surprise. As Williams noted, though, it was a meeting on transparency, which makes the original photo just a little more ironic.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Illustrations by Chris Muir of Day by Day. Be sure to read the adventures of Sam, Zed, Damon, and Jan every day!

You can’t always tell when a person is merely exercising tact, or good breeding, but you sure as hell can tell when that person is not.

443 days to go until we can swear in a real President.

RDE2010 on November 4, 2011 at 8:16 AM

Great–we have the class clown as President. They could put him in the back row, but he’d probably make bunny ears of the head in front of him.

Beaglemom on November 4, 2011 at 8:20 AM

Manmohan Singh is rumored to have said, sotto voce, “I’d say something about this childish behaviour to Obama, but I cannot. Obama is an untouchable, you know.”

coldwarrior on November 4, 2011 at 8:21 AM

You gotta think that Barry would have a hell of a time standing up straight, what with all the stepping on himself he does.

Can we PLEASE have a grown up President now?

CantCureStupid on November 4, 2011 at 8:22 AM

I think we can give Obambi a pass on this one. This is so early in the setup that he guy from the UAE is almost off camera and it looks like they need to get one other VIP’s in the back row moved also so he is not hidden by the guy in front. I worry about the WH giving out these setting up photos, it does not seem professional. You can’t see what is going on outside of the camera that would mitigate some of the more awkward moments, so why publish them? However the President of Mongolia photo still is a case of a US President not ready for Prime Time.

ExpressoBold on November 4, 2011 at 8:35 AM

The obvious solution is to put Obama in the back row next time. Or then would he put two fingers behind someone’s head for the “bunny ears” prank look?

jwolf on November 4, 2011 at 8:36 AM

When you’re Obama and you have this kind of power…….these world leaders should feel lucky to even be in the photo.

India & Mongolia are allies. Like Israel, Poland, & Britain, their leaders must be insulted.
But dictators from anti-US and/or anti-Israeli nations such as Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, & (recently) Turkey get hugs or humble bows.

You know, if I were as ashamed of being a leftist piece of garbage as much as you seem to be, I’d be thinking about a new religion about now. Reducing your pathetic self to complaining that people are mistaking pictures for what’s in the pictures…or something…is, well, pathetic.

Looking at Angela Merkel expression and Sarkozy’s reaction, I’d wager she whispered something to the French leader as “Watch out, the “schwartze” is at it again.”

coldwarrior on November 4, 2011 at 9:04 AM

Cuff him.

“We’ll take these off as soon as the shoot is over, Mr. President.”

MNHawk on November 4, 2011 at 9:14 AM

The obvious solution is to put Obama in the back row next time. Or then would he put two fingers behind someone’s head for the “bunny ears” prank look?
jwolf on November 4, 2011 at 8:36 AM

That’s right. And it’s common practice to put the taller people in back anyway. How did he get in the front row? Also, he’s all for “leading from behind”, and for the US being just another country. Wait – that’ s about the US, while this is about BHO.

Sowell Disciple on November 4, 2011 at 9:26 AM

in all fairness, though, the first example was horrendous, while this just looks like an informal shot someone took before the real shot. The people in the back row aren’t even in focus, and clearly Sarkozy and Merkel weren’t ready.

Sowell Disciple on November 4, 2011 at 9:28 AM

Ed, between this informal shot and your recent unfair Obamateurism about economics now vs. four years ago, you’re damaging the credibility of the Obamateurism brand. That’s a real shame, because the Obamateurisms in general are masterpieces of his dishonesty, incompetence, demagoguery, etc. etc.

Sowell Disciple on November 4, 2011 at 9:31 AM

I just want to know why corporal Klinger is in the picture, wrapped in a sheet?

Oldnuke on November 4, 2011 at 8:24 AM

After all these years, he’s still trying to get that medical discharge by acting like he’s off his rocker.

Dressing like a dame didn’t work, so now he’s hoping the arab outfit will do the trick.

UltimateBob on November 4, 2011 at 9:43 AM

The Saudi king musta just walked in.

Akzed on November 4, 2011 at 9:47 AM

Meh.
It seems to me the photographer, in trying to get smiles from this motley crew, asked “Alright, now who’s the moron that likes to wave in these photos?” Merkel and Sarkozy just found it funnier than most.

warden on November 4, 2011 at 9:48 AM

i see your infantile project to hit back at slate is now forcing you to scrape the absolute bottom of the barrel… the photo is not even showing what you’re implying it is! jeez.

sesquipedalian on November 4, 2011 at 8:29 AM

Yet, if Bush had behaved in this fashion, you’d be here denouncing him, and everyone that works for, and supports him.

I think most realize it’s not the official photo. But considering what so many are going thru, will go thru, and the spiraling decline of our country…a good laugh for vent is much needed. So lighten up. If you don’t like them, go post elsewhere. It doesn’t always have to be to your liking, does it? Clearly this is a conservative site. Go visit some lib sites. Because they’ll lie and distort and do your thinking for you! ;)

capejasmine on November 4, 2011 at 9:49 AM

This wasn’t a well organized photo. One man (below the man wearing a red flower on his lapel) is almost completely off camera, a short man in the back row is almost completely hidden by the man in front of him, the UAE leader looks like he just saw one of his 72 virgins, and Sarkozy looks like he’s cheering on the Ham Hand.

Still, Barack Oh-Show-Me can’t resist waving at a camera. How do you treat the leader of the world’s most populous democracy (India)? Pick his nose in front of a camera?

Steve Z on November 4, 2011 at 9:56 AM

Ok, lay it out for me skippy; why is Obama the ONLY World Leader who can’t figure out how to take a group photo? Even after being mocked for screwing it up last time?

Is it stupidity, indifference, or narcissism (or some mix of the three) that you think explains this? And which one stops this from making Obama look bad?

Or are you claiming that Obama was correct, and the other 19 World Leaders forgot to wave as they were supposed to?
