Ben Bradlee on the Cain accusations: “I think he’s got it coming to him, doesn’t he?”

posted at 9:10 pm on November 4, 2011 by Allahpundit

Via the Daily Caller, I watched this early this morning and still can’t figure out why he’d say it. Is he … joking? Mistaking Cain for someone who has a proven track record of harassment? Simply wishing ill upon the Republican demon du jour? Or is there another explanation?

On the one hand, he’s 90. On the other hand, he seems perfectly lucid. On the other hand, he’s 90. Seriously, what’s this supposed to mean?

Y’all know what runaway slaves get. He shouldn’t have left the plantation.

I watched this early this morning and still can’t figure out why he’d say it.

Really?

It’s obvious.

Cain is a conservative black – he’s off the liberal plantation, and whatever sleaze folks want to throw at him as a result… he has it coming to him, see?

Midas on November 4, 2011 at 9:14 PM

First off he’s nearly 40 years past the “who is this guy” stage…

2ndly, this whole Cain thing has me rooting for Herman.

Now that this gal thinks she’s not going to have to go public? They already know where she lives. Her phone is ringing off the wall. She’s probably waiting for a 7 figure offer to tell her “story”.

Go Herman Go!!!!

I watched this early this morning and still can’t figure out why he’d say it.

Two possibles.

1. Bradlee believes that Cain is a Republican so he deserves anything he gets in the way of grief.

2. Or this kind of behavior is common in DC, and is assuming Cain is guilty based on that.

sharrukin on November 4, 2011 at 9:19 PM

They are both obviously drunk. It is funny that Bradly says Cain had the sexual harassment charged “coming” as he (Bradley) is hanging all over an attractive young woman he doesn’t even know.

Liberals; do as I say, not as I do.

BuckNutty on November 4, 2011 at 9:19 PM

“Run for the roundhouse” has negative racial connotations in American history. Ben made a Freudian slip.

onlineanalyst on November 4, 2011 at 9:19 PM

I know this wasn’t the question, but didn’t he just repeatedly sexually harrass that reporter? He should keep his hands to himself. It would be quite funny if she filed a complaint.

Now, he likes Chris Matthews and a Kennedy? He’s just wishing ill on.

Benjamin Crowninshield Bradlee (born August 26, 1921) is a vice president at-large of The Washington Post. As executive editor of the Post from 1968 to 1991,

I then posted it on facebook and my “progressive” friends went bonkers.
2:08 into the clip bradlee (evidently drunk) starts his comments.
At 2:28 he makes the comment that Mr. Cain should “run for the roundhouse”..a direct reference to the place (the roundhouse) in Harpers Ferry that runaway slaves “ran” to in escaping their masters wrath during the abolishionist movement.

Holy crap. He’s raking it in. Yesterday, I figured he might break $1m by the time this is over. But he’s got a shot at 1.5 or even 2.

Frankly, I thought he was cooked a couple of days ago, given how poorly he handled the accusations. But he seems to have weathered the storm. If he takes this as a lesson learned and starts getting ahead of the conversation, then I think he’ll have a real shot at the nomination. It’ll show he’s learning on the fly and able to adapt, which is critical in my mind. If he keeps stumbling through new crap, though, and keeps uttering gaffes and stupidities, then I don’t think he’s worth the time.

We’ll see. He needs to show he can play the outsider, and still be savvy to the BS that happens in a campaign. ‘Cause this ain’t nothin’ compared to the insanity of day-to-day presidentin’.

Run to the Roundhouse, Nellie

Nellie is a good hand with a locomotive, but not much at catching the eye of her true love, rancher Sterling Worth. But Sterling is having his problems because villainous Hugo Swindle has discovered oil on the ranch and is attempting to take over the property. Nellie learns of the truth, but Hugo will stop at nothing to achieve his evil goal! He pursues Nellie, who tries to escape (to the roundhouse, of course), but Hugo captures her, and she is tied to the railroad tracks. Just as a train comes thundering down on helpless Nell, Sterling appears, defeats the villain and saves the day. Our hero then sees Nellie’s true beauty for the first time, and they join in a warm embrace.

The executioner is supposed to hang the guy behind a curtain, and instead, something else happens, and there’s a lot of commotion behind the curtain. Matthews explains, with a huge, s***-eating grin on his face, laughing, smiling, about to burst with excitment and glee … Matthews explains, “he strangled the bast*rd”. And I had to wonder, Nazi or not, what kind of sick guy would have such a reaction to such a story. Matthews in this lather, this frenzy of bloodlust. It was macabre. Bradlee is the scum that has taken this country to the depths of hell. Screw this irrational piece of garbage. When you think of the Washington Post, leftwing nut jobs like Milbanks, Robinson and Cohen are certified bigots who have no conscious. Bradlee is their daddy. Those more leftwing insane were made to branch off and form Politico. They are all a part of the movement to destroy this nation.

It’s in the book, “run to John Brown’s Fort, run to the roundhouse”

I love a good history book that’s written like fiction.

I just finished this one and am now reading “Lusitana”

Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of a President

Dang, I didn’t know the doctors killed James Garfield. Duh!

Bet he went to some “good’ party’s with JFK. Lot of pretty girls around don’t you think?

Hummer53 on November 4, 2011 at 10:36 PM

I wonder when Mr. Bradlee thinks it’s proper to bring up Barack Obama’s race. When people criticize him, perhaps?

I wrote Ben Bradlee off when I learned he knew everything that was going on in the Kennedy WH and decided the people had no right to know news that, in his opinion, wasn’t fit to print. And that he would elevate a hack like Sally Quinn to journalism’s hierarchy because she was sleeping her way to the top. With him.

JFK: “Where’s the women?”

So that’s Ben Bradlee – don’t believe I’ve ever seen him live (assuming that he is here).

One thing I never knew about him – per Wikipedia:

“In 1952 Bradlee joined the staff of the Office of U.S. Information and Educational Exchange (USIE), the embassy’s propaganda unit. USIE produced films, magazines, research, speeches, and news items for use by the CIA throughout Europe. USIE (later known as USIA) also controlled the Voice of America, a means of disseminating pro-American “cultural information” worldwide. ”

Funny that.

Yikes!

Ben Bradlee throwing darts at Cain for sexual advances? Bradlee was “dating” Sally Quinn who worked for him at the Washington Post. And he was doing it while still married to his second wife. They used to sneak off together to unknown locations. My paper, the Washington Star, used to report on their escapades, calling the two the “Fun Couple” in our tasteful gossip column called The Ear. It was must reading for Post staffers and the newstands near the Post would run out of Stars when we revealed another weekend jaunt together.

Bradlee must be getting senile. He seems to forget his own dalliances. He most certainly has forgotten he had to return a Pulitzer Prize won by fraudulent reporter Janet Cook. He vouched for her phony story when neither he nor her direct editor Bob Woodward validated her sources.

But liberals are never judged by their actions.

Generous interpretation of “he’s got it coming”:

1. The accusations are real; they exist
2. There was a settlement over the accusations
3. Herman Cain is running for president
4. Presidential candidates do, and must, get properly vetted by the media (except for you-know-who, of course)

Non-so-generous interpretation:

1. He’s a Republican and must be punished

Damn, I can’t believe Allah missed the Daily Caller’s link title and missed the delicious irony of it all:

Never heard of this dude before this thread. Who cares what an old fool says?

karenhasfreedom on November 5, 2011 at 2:24 AM

Bradlee has always hated Republicans. Why do you think the Post went after Nixon instead of the more corrupt LBJ?

WannabeAnglican on November 5, 2011 at 3:59 AM

“I think he’s got it coming to him, doesn’t he?”

Seriously, what’s this supposed to mean?

Bradlee would have been 20 years old in 1941. He grew up (?? did he ??) in an era of America that was segregated and if you were a white boy it was ‘sport’ for some to dis on black men and lust on black women. To Bardlee’s old mind he thinks Cain is ‘upity’ and the quote in his mind was: “I think the ni**er needs to know his place, don’t yall?”

The sad thing is the fact this creep has had so much power and infulence over the last forty years and probably has screwed over many black and white people from his glass tower. People like him are one reason I believe in heaven and hell.
