Pelosi: Heck yeah, the government should shut down that scab plant in South Carolina

posted at 9:25 am on November 1, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

Heritage finds a nice catch in this CNBC interview with Nancy Pelosi last week, as Maria Bartiromo queries Barack Obama’s favorite House Speaker on the role of government in business expansion. Should agencies like the NLRB have the authority to shut down private-sector plants simply for not being unionized? Pelosi barely waits for the question to conclude before blurting out her “yes”:

In an interview late last week, House Minority Leaeder Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) told CNBC that Boeing should either unionize its production facilities in South Carolina, or shut them down entirely.

“Do you think it’s right that Boeing has to close down that plant in South Carolina because it’s non union?” asked host Maria Bartiromo. Pelosi’s reply: “Yes.”

The minority leader quickly added that she would rather it simply unionize and stay open. But barring unionization, by Pelosi’s reasoning, it should simply shut down.

Lachlan Markay wonders when Pelosi and the Democrats became so anti-jobs, anti-worker, and … anti-democracy:

Pelosi may or may not know that workers at the South Carolina plant in question voted resoundingly (199-68) to decertify their union two years ago. Government policies that would close the plant for being a non-union shop would simply be punishing those workers for exercising their right to determine union representation for themselves.

Government should have no interest in whether a particular plant is unionized or not, let alone assert authority in this area.  Government exists to uniformly enforce the law without bias.  Agencies like the NLRB want to use the color of authority to favor unions because they see that as a preferred social-engineering outcome — whether or not workers themselves want union representation or not.

We have come far from the legitimate exercise of government in this and many other areas.  It’s time to demand a return of government to its proper boundaries, and perhaps eliminating altogether those agencies that have arrogated to themselves the power to impose their preferred social prescriptions through the abuse of agency authority.  That would include the NLRB, the EPA, and a number of other federal entities.

Once again Pelosi reinforces that liberalism is a progressive mental disorder and she is in the latter stages of insanity. Obama stating she is the most important Speaker of the House in history proves Obama is not far behind. Our country is being destroyed from within by a mental illness.

I’ve never been one to jump on her for using non-union labor for her vineyard. After all, she can’t force them or even ask them to join a labor union if they don’t want to. Now, that attack makes sense. By her own logic, the NLRB should shut down her non-union vineyard. Doesn’t matter that her workers aren’t interested in unionization. Shut it down!

The Better People of the federal government should rightly be allowed to interfere in private business as much as they wish, why, because their business acumen is far superior to those who actually run the companies.

In fact I think America needs a centrally-planned economy in which a select group of people, preferably liberal, direct everything. We could call that group…oh I don’t know…the Politburo or something like that.

Are the Democrats so beholden to the unions that they don’t even realize that 85% of voters are not in any union?

In addition, they continue to harrangue against the Tea Party.

What they don’t seem to realize is that actual Tea Party membership is represented by a minority of only 15-20% of those who espouse the principles of the Tea Party. In other words, most don’t actually belong to any particular group. That minority is only the tip of the iceberg that the left sees. They don’t see the part that’s submerged and waiting to sink the liberal, progressive ship of fools.

My guess is there are a lot of law-abiding citizens out there seething and just waiting for the opportunity to do their protesting at the ballot box. So when the Lying Stream Media disses the Tea Party, they’re actually dissing a whole lot of people who sympathize with the Tea Party’s goals. That’s not a very good way to win friends.

The good people of South Carolina are steamed about the issue of the Boeing plant. Both those on the right and left. It is like Steve Jobs told Obama that it is a lot easier doing business in China than the United States. Perhaps Boeing should move its production plants to China, too……………….And, in my opinion public sector unions should not be allowed to exist, at all.

Unions are not just social engineering. They are a power center unelected by the general citizenry and capable of siphoning off huge amounts of money to Party control.

The Democratic Party has become this country’s number one criminal enterprise.

njcommuter on November 1, 2011 at 11:27 AM

She’s a Democrat!

The problem is that in our new law-free environment, the opinion of a bureaucrat or a former Speaker of the House have the authority of law. They think the plant ought to close, so the plant’s gotta close.

The notion that the power of government should be limited so that every whim of the ruling class is not immediately acted upon is so foriegn to our betters in Washington that it simply does not occur to them to ask.

I’d like to talk to you tonight about a minority group of people (union bosses) who have no mental or physical handicaps and, who, through no fault of their own, have never been deprived, and consequently are forced to live in conditions of extreme luxury. This often ignored minority, is very rarely brought to the attention of the general public. The average man in the street scarcely gives a second thought to these extremely well-off people. He, quite simply, fails to appreciate the pressures vast quantities of money just do not bring. Have you at home, ever had to cope with this problem… (cut to a rich young yachting type surrounded by girls in bikinis) or this… (cut to a rich woman loading her chauffeur with all kinds of expensive parcels) or even this… (cut to a still of Centre Point) I know it’s only human to say, ‘Oh this will never happen to me’, and of course, it won’t. In addition to the small number of votes they Unions provide, Unions also provide campaign donations, volunteers and protesters who will arrive to stamp their feet and shout about how oppressed they are, whenever necessary.

It is long past time for Members of Unions to wake up and demand that their Union Leadership stop giving their dues to Democrats.

If the Union Members do not start to speak up soon, the rest of us will be left to assume that the Union Members are as anti-American as their Union Leadership is. People are judged by the company they keep.
