Open letter from Oakland police union: Why is the mayor encouraging city employees to join the “Occupy” movement’s strike?

posted at 8:20 pm on November 1, 2011 by Allahpundit

They say they’re “confused” but they aren’t. This couldn’t be simpler: Jean Quan, the Democratic mayor of a Democratic city, was utterly intimidated by the media backlash after cops followed her orders to clear the plaza in front of city hall and ended up clashing with protesters. So now, to make amends, not only has she given them back the space, she’s giving all city employees the day off tomorrow to join the mass strike against “the establishment” — except of course for the designated scapegoat, the police. If, like the union, you’re wondering whether Quan and those employees aren’t also part of “the establishment” and why she thinks handing out extra sick days for dissent is more important than running the city, clearly you’ve forgotten an important lesson. Namely, any liberal can “speak truth to power” by virtue of being a liberal, no matter how fantastically powerful he or she might be. If this idiot is qualified, Jean Quan certainly is too.

Brutal:

That’s hundreds of City workers encouraged to take off work to participate in the protest against “the establishment.” But aren’t the Mayor and her Administration part of the establishment they are paying City employees to protest? Is it the City’s intention to have City employees on both sides of a skirmish line?

It is all very confusing to us.

Meanwhile, a message has been sent to all police officers: Everyone, including those who have the day off, must show up for work on Wednesday. This is also being paid for by Oakland taxpayers. Last week’s events alone cost Oakland taxpayers over $1 million.

The Mayor and her Administration are beefing up police presence for Wednesday’s work strike they are encouraging and even “staffing,” spending hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars for additional police presence – at a time when the Mayor is also asking Oakland residents to vote on an $80 parcel tax to bail out the City’s failing finances.

All of these mixed messages are confusing.

They should probably ignore her orders and join the protests too, no? They’re part of the 99 percent and OWS hero Michael Moore has been begging them publicly to join forces with the occupiers. Tomorrow would be the perfect time to leave the guns at home and show solidarity. Don’t worry about the security vacuum, either: The occupiers have their own security “working groups” so Oakland should be covered. And even if it isn’t, the movement is all about experimental living arrangements. What living arrangement could be more experimental than an entire police force suddenly disappearing from a major city?

To cleanse the palate, here’s Colbert torturing two OWSers last night. I know he’s a liberal, but give it a chance. You’ll enjoy it.

I ask again, what are the odds that Mayor Quan got a ‘phone call from the Obama White House?

The Republican non-response and silence throughout this national Monty Python skit is even more of a scandal than the squalid scandal itself. But we shouldn’t be stunned. The Left has been cleaning our clock across the culture for the past 20 years. As Boehner mumbles empathy for their “frustrations”.

This is really getting ridiculous. It’s all politics now, with these Dem mayors trying to hold onto support. Got the Christmas season coming up…and these cities aren’t gonna want tent cities all over ruining the shoppers’ good tidings…aka CASH

Because the mayor works for the ‘rats and ‘the cause’.

The police work for ‘law & order’ and ‘public safety’.

Those two aren’t necessarily pulling in the same direction.

From headline comments:

The mayor’s office released a statement that said, “We are not urging businesses to close on Wednesday. Instead, we advise that you use common sense precautions.”

Should they file the serial numbers off of those Common Sense Precautions beforehand? (Answer: no, of course not. But do switch your barrels and firing pins out afterward.)

Bishop on November 1, 2011 at 9:03 PM

We will see more and more of this idiocy and contorted liberal thinking because of the breakdown in enforcing the law. Obama, who is sworn to and is obligated to uphold the laws of the US, is leading: He ignores the law, he ignores court rulings, he rules by waiver. That, of course, is one significant reason our economy will not get going until he is out of office. Further, however, selectively ignoring laws leads to the Oakland type of inconsistency. The police “confusion” is feigned, but the everyday citizen becomes “confused,” at least subconsciously, when the authorities responsible for upholding the law instead disregard it. This is a giant leap for anarchy.

This couldn’t be simpler: Jean Quan, the Democratic mayor of a Democratic city.

This whole response by Jean Quan, reminds me of Kathleen Blanco’s lack of competent leadership, when she was Democrat Governor of Louisiana, during Katrina flooding.

So those two morons are the ones the “Press Working Group” reached consensus would best represent OWS without actually “speaking for” the movement, because no one can do that, because no one has the first bloody notion of what the movement is about besides hatin’ on the “big corporations,” outdoor defecation, chasing real poor and homeless people away from the free food, and ruining the lives of the people and businesses in the neighborhood, with the occasional recreational rape thrown in while the Fun Working Group is trying to reach consensus.

But they won’t, they’re good and honorable people. However, if I was the Chief I’d deploy my officers to handle calls and police the rest of the city as usual, but declare that four square blocks around Frank Ogawa Plaza are a no-go zone for police. No matter what happens the police do not respond there. Let these fools fester in the filth of their own making.
