Occupy Wall Street’s latest brainchild: “First in the Nation Caucus Occupation”
posted at 1:25 pm on November 1, 2011 by Tina Korbe
Members of the Occupy Iowa movement have launched a new operation, the “First in the Nation Caucus Occupation.” It’s exactly what it sounds like: A move to effectively shut down the Iowa caucuses, to bombard the Iowa campaign offices of presidential candidates and to force those who want to win the White House to talk solutions to the overblown problem of income inequality in this country. From Politico:
“You go inside or if they won’t let you in, you shut ‘em down. You sit in front of their doors,” Frank Cordaro of Des Moines, the man credited for the idea of the “First in the Nation Caucus Occupation,” told the Register. “Who knows? It could be a very big deal.”
The plan, Cordaro told CNN, is, “people coming to Iowa, occupying every presidential [candidate’s] office, shutting them down until they start talking real turkey about what’s going on in this country, where the 99 percent of the people who are not benefiting, at the expense of the 1 percent who are getting away with murder.”
Cordaro’s idea was voted on and approved by the Occupy Iowa’s general assembly Monday night, according to the Register.
The vision, then, is not merely for Iowan Occupiers to occupy campaign headquarters, but also to make Iowa a pilgrimage destination for Occupiers of other cities. The call for reinforcements in Iowa might come at just the right time, as cold tests the mettle of East Coast Occupiers and a legal battle threatens Occupy Londoners. It also provides a handy alternate headline to the recent troubling accounts of the sexual harassment and even rape that goes unreported at Occupy sites. Given the probable appetite for something “new” among Occupiers, then, Cordaro very well might be right about one thing: The “First in the Nation Caucus Occupation” could ultimately be a very big deal.
Yet, Iowa Republican Chairman Matt Strawn seems relatively unconcerned about this latest brainchild of “the 99 percent.” He told Politico the idea amounts to “a mere publicity stunt.” He also pointed out the irony of an OWS takeover of “the most grassroots-oriented process in national politics.”
Strawn has a point. Plus, the details of the sit-ins have yet to be determined and Occupiers aren’t exactly known for attention to detail or specificity of demands. Ed Fallon, the organizer of Occupy Iowa, told The Des Moines Register that “the idea is to basically take over until we get response to our satisfaction or we are forcibly removed.” Unless the Iowan Occupiers surprise me and actually define what a satisfactory response from candidates would look and sound like, the latter option seems the more likely outcome to me.

Hey, if it delays the caucus vote and makes it more fair for other Republicans to have a say in the election, I’m for it.
Christian Conservative on November 1, 2011 at 1:30 PM
Honestly, I’m okay with them annoying Iowans for a little while. They are the high and might first in the nation (for some strange reason, and its a caucus for heaven’s sake!). Let them eat it for a while.

Don’t you think it would be better to sit in front of the White House and occupy the current President’s office? Sounds like these people have a lot more faith in the Republican’s getting something done than the current officeholder.
CBP on November 1, 2011 at 1:32 PM
They’re going to camp out in Iowa, in January? Shtoo-pid.
I can’t wait to see what Iowahawk posts about this.

Get these people registered Republican in the state of Iowa, and all of a sudden Ron Paul’s master plan comes together…

Wait, let me see if I understand this correctly.
These guys want to demand answers for people running for President, but they don’t want any answers from the current president or government officials?
Doesn’t that seem a tad bit crazy?

Tina, not sure if you have seen this, but it is worth the watch. These people are so obnoxious, even their kids are obnoxious.

All that will do is push Iowa to the right. Go for it Occupation zombies!

Sounds more exciting than the caucus itself. IIRC, Bachmann had some beefy, aggressive bodyguards at the fair.

A satisfactory response…. really??? Been kind of waiting for the last couple of months for OWS to define what that looks like.
AndrewsDad on November 1, 2011 at 1:36 PM
For a group that supposedly espouses power to the people and all that kind of rot-gut they sure don’t like them to be able to vote.

What about the Democrat candidate?
ctmom on November 1, 2011 at 1:36 PM
So far the rule of law has held out in Iowa. Occupy Des Moines was allowed their 3 day permit, which has always been the limit, then kicked off the capital lawn. Iowa City (the most liberal part of the state) has been a little wobbly. The Occupy Iowa City group started erecting a building in the park in anticipation of a cold winter, which the city halted, then allowed them to build something 10′ x 10′ as long as it could be moved every 3 days until the ground froze.

Occupy Iowa “caucus” winner?
Soros or Obama will be the winner would be my guess.
Can they vote for their first choice candidate though?….MARX.

Personally, I would go occupy Florida in January, but that’s just me.

They’d better not try this sh** in NH. I’m in day 4 of no power and I’m feeling surly. And it wouldn’t take much to make me surly again come January.

This pretty much sounds like the typical “we’re just here to disrupt and, hopefully, shut down your event” type of protest which has actually become pretty standard fare at large Republican political events over the past few years. Mostly they just want to create a scene and get arrested. The media then expresses faux “horror” at the brutality of law enforcement. Lib politics 101 – its in the handbook.

Based on this, it sounds like the Occupiers will stand a better chance of suppressing the liberal voters. Bring. It. On.

Anyone who has any doubts about whether OWS is part and parcel of Obama and the Democrats 2012 campaign is a complete idiot.
One of the main tenets of any effective propaganda campaign is to not have every single person who joins it to know what the true goal of the campaign is. To let them think that they’re fighting for some lofty ideal, when they’re really being herded to fight for some narrow interest.
In order for OWS to have an air of authenticity, they have to allow the protesters to let it all hang out and bang on drums, smoke weed, have girls dancing topless, etc. They have to turn it into a “happening” that’s fun and exciting, like some sort of Renaissance fair. If they were to pass out flyers that say “our purpose is to get Obama re-elected”, with a list of do’s and don’ts in order to make a positive impression on the average American, a lot of protesters would not want to be involved.
So any embarrassing behavior that the protesters engage in gives the Democrats the opportunity to distance themselves from the protesters’ excesses, while still supporting their overall theme. Meanwhile, the MSM does it’s best to mainstream the catch phrase “the 99% vs. the 1%”, as Obama and other Democrats demonize millionaires and billionaires.
I’ve seen plenty of articles speculating about how risky it will be for the Democrats to throw their support behind OWS. These articles that are written by Liberals are written for the sole purpose of convincing people that there’s no collusion going on between the Democrats and OWS. These articles that are written by Conservatives are being written by Conservative fools.
Of course it’s risky for the Democrats to associate themselves with this filthy lot. But when unemployment is 9% and you’ve lost most Independent voters, then guess what? YOU TAKE RISKS!

OWS……Part of the CHICAGO 1968 Strategy by Obama?
Imagine when they picket “OCCUPY” the GOP Convention city and they try to storm the Convention and the police have to use tear gas or such.
Voila……….KENT STATE MOMENT.

Excellent video, bloggless!
Who will be the first Reporter to ask for New York Mayor Bloomberg’s response to this OWS disruption of a public meeting?
It is time to start holding Mayor Bloomberg accountable for making sure the rights of NYC parents are not trampled upon by these childish Occupiers.

Ummm….technically, isn’t Iowa (or ANY state, for that matter) actually part of the 2 percent?
I say go for it – NOBODY ELSE wants to be outside in Iowa in the dead of winter, so I doubt their message is going to be heard by very many people….

Heh, looks like the perennial Edwards supporter/organizer finally found himself a new job.
Note to you Ivy League Poli Sci types thinking of Occupying Iowa. It’s cold there. Colder than New York City. Now go get em! Nothing will get the typical Iowegian switching from Cain to a Marxist faster than some smelly Poli Sci retard showing up in their farmhouse, on a cold January caucus night.

How do they have the authority to have people go away from a public park?

The Constitution guarantess the right of peaceful assembly … it does not give any such protection to mobs whose sole intent is to disrupt and create chaos.
I’m all for beating the living crap out of each one of the OWS commies. If Governor Branstad had any cojones he’d issue a statement declaring that any disruption of political activities will be met with crushing, unrelenting force.

Just remember that – according to them – they aren’t commies.
They may foster the same basic Marxist ideology and the same belief system, but they aren’t commies (or National Socialists/Marxists/Collectivists/Leninists/Fascists/….)
Now, they wouldn’t lie about a little thing like that, would they?

So much for “Every vote counts”
These wannabe dictators won’t even let you organize for your own campaigns but claim they are peacefully using their 1st amendment rights.
Impeding the fair political process of free people once had a name in this country and that name was “Sedition.”

Be nice to know more about Frank Cordaro of Des Moines, Iowa. You say ‘Progressive Activist’ and I say ‘Dem Op’. Disrupting GOP primaries would be a good way for the Dems to harness some of this pointless energy to their own purposes, which is what Democratic Party leadership has been trying to do since this ‘Occupy’ business started.

My wife drove past the Occupy “crowd” in Cedar Rapids a week ago and counted about 5 of them. But it was cold day.
They’re gonna be awful busy in January…
karl9000 on November 1, 2011 at 3:04 PM
Do they want to attend the caucuses? If so, the numbers are a bit formidable. There will be 1784 separate caucuses occurring at the same time.

If the occupiers descend upon IA, then this helps Herman Cain whose supporters are more enthused than Rom-nut’s and therefore more willing to wade through the human refuse.

If they can use RICO laws against pro-life protesters for blocking access to abortion clinics, surely they can use RICO laws against OWS protesters for blocking access to political offices.

Trespassing, extortion, and harassment… great plan.
Fortunately all of those are just as legal as theft, assaulting police officers, unrestricted drug use, and rape that the protests have already engaged in, so they’re not likely to have any problems at all.
Good idea guys. Have fun.
