Mrs. Cain to the rescue?
posted at 10:45 am on November 1, 2011 by Ed Morrissey
Herman Cain has often been asked why his wife has not joined him on the campaign trail, and he has consistently replied that the Cains decided that Gloria Cain would maintain the home and family, away from the public spotlight. The reclusive shifts to the exclusive, however, as Cain announced yesterday that Gloria would shortly give an exclusive interview. Is this a coincidence?
Gloria Cain has not been seen on the campaign trail with her husband of 43 years since he announced his presidential candidacy to a cheering crowd in Atlanta in May. But that will soon change.
“You will meet my wife publicly, in an exclusive interview that we are currently planning and anticipating,” Herman Cain said on Fox News on Monday, sounding every bit like a public relations strategist.
“She will be introduced in terms of some limited exposure. But it’s not her style for her to be with me on every campaign stop.”
Gloria Cain’s appearance on the stump could not come at a more awkward and crucial time for the GOP contender, who sits atop some polls, yet seems vulnerable to an implosion after acknowledging that he was accused years ago of inappropriate behavior toward a female employee.
I doubt that this is either coincidental or explicitly tied to the Politico story about vague allegations of sexual harassment. The Cains had to know that if his presidential bid caught fire that Gloria would have to make at least one appearance on the national stage, if only to humanize the candidate and demonstrate that his family backs his bid. Some sort of media appearance would have to be made between now and the end of the year. However, the timing for the interview seems particularly propitious for Cain to get some distance from this story, and for a show of support from his wife at a moment when people are questioning Cain’s behavior more than ten years ago.
Cain also has had some people question the inconsistent responses that have come from his campaign and from Cain himself on this story. Cain started off by saying that he didn’t recall any settlement, and then later last night recalled that the settlement with one woman had been remarkably small. Laura Ingraham asked Cain to explain himself right away in an interview this morning (via The Right Scoop):
As I was telling Scott Hennen this morning, I had to conduct at least two investigations into allegations of sexual harassment about that same period of time, and I can’t recall most of the details today. Cain did have a few days’ notice before this story broke to refresh his memory, but these incidents took place more than a decade ago — and given the details we’ve heard so far, they don’t appear to have been particularly memorable, for Cain or anyone else except the complainants.
As Cain says, he’s expecting plenty of attacks in the next few weeks as his numbers remain high. Cain relates one he’s seen but I hadn’t heard, which is that he got his Burger King executive job as a result of pressure from … Jesse Jackson. I’m pretty sure that one’s not coming from the Obama team.

He’s a black man for crying out loud, off course he is a sexual animal, with no control…of course he isn’t capable of running a country, look at the black man now in charge…of course he doesn’t have any experience, he’s just a black man, how can a black man possibly gain experience unless he is elected to a government office?
This will be repeated over and over and over again…for the next few months, until the weak willed putty brained conservatives start bobbing their heads in unison…it’s already started.
They did it with Perry, they will do it with Cain…it is so easy to manipulate so many of you.

You do know that Mrs. Cain has health issues, right Ed?
Cain — who is expected to formally announce his bid for president Saturday at an Atlanta rally — said she’ll appear “selectively with me at certain times as it relates to this campaign.” He also said she has an implanted heart device, which cuts down on the stamina she may have to stump across the country.
Let’s make sure we have all the facts, ok.

This whole thing is a load of BS. At least Justice Thomas had Anita Hill accusing him, here Herman Cain has “two women” according to a dubious MSM outlet full of anonymous sources who are sooo protective of these women’s privacy. So if these women aren’t the ones bringing this up, who is? Politico? A tipster to Politico? How does Cain confront a phantom accuser? I’ve seen women wrangle bogus sexual harassment payoffs from companies before. It’s common because companies know litigation is costly and federal law is stacked against them.

Its a nonsensical explanation. He knew it was true that he had been accused of sex harassment- don’t tell me had completely suppressed the memory- so it shouldn’t have mattered to him how well sourced that information was. Once Politico started asking him questions, he should have used the 10 days to refresh his memory and get his story straight, so it didn’t change over less than 24 hours, as it did yesterday (that’s assuming it’s true that he actually forgot such an important detail as whether there was a settlement or not, which seems pretty dubious to me).
Jon0815 on November 1, 2011 at 11:31 AM
I am starting to think that Cain’s accuser must be a white woman. They won’t expose her because we could turn it around to be that SHE was racist in her senseless claim of harassment.

“Damned if you do and damned if you don’t.”
If Gloria Cain didn’t appear, the storyline by the Lying Stream Media would be it must be true since she won’t defend him. If she appears, then it’s Herman’s desperate attempt to fend off the allegations. No one can win in this environment of vitriol, lies and innuendo.
If Greta and everyone else is so interested in the “settlement”, they should check with the Restaurant Association and its Human Resources Department and/or General Counsel. Of all people, Greta is a lawyer and shouldn’t even be trying to get Herman to disclose this information. I thought the settlements were sealed and not to be spoken of. My guess is Herman Cain should have referred them to the NRA and it’s general counsel. But, then again, it’s damned if you do and damned if you don’t.
Or, maybe the people making the allegations should come forward with all their alleged, juicy details if there are any. I believe everyone has the wrong target, especially the so-called “conservative” media.

Ed-
Don’t you think the fact that Cain clearly implies Romney is behind this deserves comment? This is oh so ironic, as Cain does this in the context of fighting off false allegations lobbed in his direction by Politico. I transcribed the relevant portion of the interview:
Frankly this second theory about the smoking ad is flat out ridiculous and makes him look like a loon. They went after Block because his (terrible, but I digress) ad was successful? Puhlease! I’m trying to remain fair to Cain on this kerfuffle (the 12 day notice from Politico is the most troubling thing imho, and contradicts what he says to Laura about thinking about it “overnight”) but it seems to me that to blame another candidate without any evidence (or better yet, proof) is reckless and irresponsible. If Cain has information that Romney is behind this, anything beyond idle speculation, then he should provide it (just as Politico should hand over the info it is holding back!).

So either they were lying when they signed the agreement or they are lying now? Why on earth would anyone believe a lier? Ohh I know because the person thats involved is a conservative. I dont believe for a minute that this was leaked by Romney or Perry. perhaps I am naive but I see this as all done by the DNC. I see james carville’s hand in this. I have no proof just un-substantiated un-named sources.

Do you two agree or disagree that Cain had 10 days to think about these allegations?
Ha! Some of you don’t seem to have any problem leaping to conclusions that Romney is behind this, but is someone mentions the FACT that Cain was contacted by Politico about this 10 days ago and had all that time to refresh his memory they’re “monkeys at the end of an organ grinders chain”.
Yes, but he still had 10 days to think about it, not “overnight” as he said to Laura. Not to mention all the contradictory statements he has made. Believe me, I take sexual harassment allegations with a pound of salt, and the lack of details in this Politico story stinks, but Cain has not handled this well.
Buy Danish on November 1, 2011 at 12:07 PM
He implicitly, not explicitly, blames Romney. Who do you think “they” is?
Really! Ha! Cain used innuendo to irresponsibly speculate about the source of the Politico story, but because I call him out for doing that I’m the irresponsible one. I’m a lowly commenter, Cain wants to be President of the United States. Don’t you think the onus is on HIM to stick to facts and not speculate? Granted Laura egged him on, but that is no excuse.
Gotta run out folks – will be back later to check in to see what another fun day at Hot Air brings.

katy the mean old lady on November 1, 2011 at 12:20 PM
I didn’t know that. Thanks for the link.
I just always assumed it was only because she was not a politicians wife and at 65 yrs old, she would only become one when necessary, when he had the nomination or close to it.
The other wives have been doing this all their married lives. This will be a big change for Mrs. Cain. God bless her.
From your link from last May:
We know all about Mrs. Romney, Mrs. Gingrich and Mr. Palin. But what about Mrs. Cain?
That would be the wife of Herman Cain, the former Godfathers Pizza executive who is exploring a Republican run for the White House in 2012.
“Don’t expect the traditional amount of exposure you normally get from a campaign wife,” Cain said about his wife, Gloria. “She’s not going to do that.”
Cain, a charismatic orator known for riling up crowds at Tea Party events, said his wife of almost 43 years doesn’t desire to be the center of attention on stage or on TV.
“My wife is one of the most unassuming, not-looking-for-the-limelight-people you’ve ever met,” he said during a phone interview in between campaigning in Nashville. “And I’m going to keep it that way. I’m not going to push her out there to try to do things she doesn’t want to do. That’s not her personality.”
It’s hard to find much of anything about Gloria Cain on the Internet. Her only mention on Herman Cain’s campaign website is in his biography, where he says, “the paramount joys in my life are my wife, Gloria, our children and our grandchildren.”
“She’s very private and classy,” said Martha Zoller, a Georgia-based talk radio host who often talks about Cain, but admitted she’s only met his wife once.

MeatHeadinCA on November 1, 2011 at 12:33 PM
What does that mean and which demographic?
MeatHeadinCA on November 1, 2011 at 12:34 PM
I’m not getting the whole “he had 10 days to prepare so he must be incompetent” thing.
How do you know exactly what Politico told him they were reporting? He clearly and consistently from the beginning said that he remembers the woman’s allegations, there was an investigation and the allegations were dismissed and that he NEVER was guilty of sexual harassment to anyone EVER in his life.
He probably thought that was it. The only thing that came out that he couldn’t remember was a sexual harassment “settlement.” You don’t know when Cain was aware of that or if he dismissed it as a lie because he didn’t remember one.
When Politico said they saw documentation of a “settlement” Cain began to try and remember.
Again, Cain didn’t remember a sexual harassment “settlement” because there wasn’t any. A termination agreement for a few months severance pay that she would have gotten anyway and is typical of most employees is not a sexual harassment “settlement.” And those termination agreements typically have nondisclosure agreements because the companies don’t want the former employees badmouthing the company.
Notice what Cain said to Laura. An emphatic “NEVER” when asked if he is the type of man who makes off color jokes around women. The guy has nothing to hide. Something refreshing in a politician.

Oh and Mrs. Cain does look like a lovely woman. More specifically, she looks like she has a happy home life; the type of countenance which Mrs. Obama can’t quite fake.
I contend that most women married to Leftists have unhappy homes. That’s why they all look ugly, no matter how physically attractive or unattractive they are.

Christien on November 1, 2011 at 2:14 PM
It doesn’t matter if it is true or not. Right2Bright is right. Maybe not all of you have bought it, but most of you are nodding your little bobble heads. That’s why the conservatives and republicans lose. The MSM and biased cable will keep repeating the narrative until it becomes truth in enough peoples minds. The liberals always have an advantage over honest and honerable people. The liberal never has to be on the defensive because they have rearranged our language where the honest and honerable can’t fight back.
As an example of how the American people are becoming dumber at an alarming rate – have you noticed the chocolate commercial where the ey are shilling chocolate with air-holes in it as being good? It never dawns on the dumb-bunny American consumer that they are getting less chocolate and lots of air. I think that ad was written for obamatons and RINOS.

Bullhead on November 1, 2011 at 3:28 PM
OCB, I think a lot of the problem is that we are lied to so much by politicians that we are just wary of being suckers again. Remember when Mark Sanford disappeared? Gave him the benefit of the doubt- why wouldn’t I? He just wasn’t the type. Whoops! That’s just one example but there are SO many, on both sides of the aisle, and almost all of them lie until the whole truth comes out. Some are better at it than others.
In my case I’m reserving judgement- not because of the media, but because I’ve seen this happen over and over again with men in positions of power and I honestly don’t think it would surprise me to learn that anyone was guilty of it. I know that sounds cynical but it’s how I’ve come to feel. Still, I hope this is the extent of any revelations about Herman Cain because I truly hope & want to believe he is a good man.

All of a sudden his “sexual overtures”, have disappeared and in it’s place is…”he wasn’t responsive at a whatever level is expected”…
How quickly the haters attach themselves to whatever the media directs them to.
First: Sexual Harassment, that didn’t pan out
Second: He didn’t answer very well
Third: He had several days, why did he have inconsistency’s…as if that matters about something that never happend…
IT NEVER HAPPENED…THE ORIGINAL ATTACK, NEVER HAPPENED…GET IT?
I honestly can’t believe how stupid and how easily people are led…buydanish is a perfect example…
Well seeing as the story changed and you just “run with whatever”, yeah, you are irresponsible…you are just picking up what the MSM is feeding you, the worst of Monday morning quarterbacks…

Jeez, did you have what Perry had, r2b? You seem loopier than usual.
I agree the Politico story is unfair, lacking in details – and probably should not have been published. My comments were about how Cain reacted to the story and what he said today to Laura about why the story ran when it did.
Tonight on Special Report he speculated (and said it was speculation) it could be that liberals were responsible for the story or… it could be someone from the Right who didn’t like the fact that someone who wasn’t part of “the establishment” was doing so well.

Heh. It’s not just the lam. Rove is doing his part just as a concern troll. Heard one caller to talk radio state that because of Rove’s concerns, he was persuaded to write Cain off, facts of the hit piece be damned. The only fact that mattered was that Cain botched the rapid response, ergo, there must be truth to the accusations.
Too many so-called conservatives are too quick to eat their own without due diligence and elitists like Rove are just as anxious to usher them to the feast while running interference for their chosen quisling.

do you know exactly what was said when they contacted Cain ten days ago? For all you know, they could have asked; “is there anything you care to say about a case of sexual harassment back in the 90s?” A negative response would be all they needed to amp this hit piece by expressing a bit of concern that he didn’t come clean when given the chance.
On the flipside, imagine the superlotto euphoria, had they actually flushed a serial harasser to sing like a canary about habitual abuses going all the way back to the ‘janitor hitting on the cute cashier’ days. Go reread all that politico and Cain said/wrote in sequence. Politico was on a fishing expedition and wanted Cain to snag himself on their hook and for that, some are ready to jump off the train. Only question is where will you land?

Rove never said that so take your “ergo” and stuff it in your tinfoil hat:
