Riots erupt in Oakland, Atlanta clears out Occupiers

posted at 8:46 am on October 26, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

Seems like Oakland has finally had enough of the Occupy Movement.  Hours after warning protesters to leave public property, police intercepted them as the demonstrators tried to return.  The mob attacked, and police went into full riot mode:

The police in Oakland dispersed hundreds of protesters using tear gas and flash bombs on Tuesday night as crowds tried to re-enter a plaza outside of City Hall that the authorities had cleared of an encampment earlier in the day. …

By Wednesday morning in downtown Oakland, a dim cloud of gas still hung in the air over Frank Ogawa Plaza, according to images broadcast on CNN. A small number of police in riot gear stood by barricades around the plaza and a handful of protesters held signs nearby.

“It sounded like bombs,” said Joaquin Jutt, 24, a digital animator who was among the protesters on Tuesday night. “There was a stinging and burning in my throat, eyes and nostrils. My eyes burned like there was hot sauce in them.”

Zombie continues his close coverage of Occupy on the West Coast with photos and video at PJ Tatler, and adds this:

After the Occupy Oakland encampment was torn down early Tuesday morning by police, the ousted protesters reconvened outside the Oakland Library on Tuesday afternoon and voted to attempt a re-occupation of the same plaza from which they had just been evicted. Summoned by waves of emergency tweets and emails, fresh recruits joined the evicted Occupiers and early this evening once again marched on downtown Oakland, intending to reclaim Frank Ogawa Plaza.

But the Oakland Police were of course monitoring all this, and along with many other local police departments they were waiting for the protesters’ invasion. After an hours-long standoff at 14th and Broadway, interrupted by several confrontations and arrests, everything started to turn violent some time after 9:30pm.

What happens when you defy the police and try to “reclaim” a public plaza that the city allowed for a single use for weeks? This:

Be sure to check out the video message from an Occupier who promises to come to Oakland to arrest “every single officer involved,” if you want to start your day out with a laugh.

For the record, the Oakland PD denies that they were using flash-bang grenades:

Dozens of police in riot gear and hundreds of protesters in support of the Occupy Wall Street movement engaged in a game of cat-and-mouse in downtown Oakland on Tuesday, with authorities using tear gas to respond to demonstrators’ repeated agitations.

The latest such skirmish came around 11 p.m. as some protesters began throwing bottles among a crowd that had reconvened in front of City Hall, where a haze of chemical smoke still hung in the air following a similar clash at the site about an hour earlier. It was the fourth time police used tear gas in three hours.

Authorities have denied reports that they used flash bang canisters to help break up the crowds, saying the loud noises came from large firecrackers thrown at police by protesters. Police also report being attacked with rocks.

Overhead footage at KTVU suggests otherwise, however.  The video pretty clearly shows the explosions occurring in the middle of the crowd — which turned out to be an effective method of dispersing the rioters.  Police have had to use this strategy repeatedly during the night:

The protesters gathered at a library and marched through downtown Oakland and ultimately were met by police officers in riot gear. Several small skirmishes broke out and officers cleared the area by firing tear gas.

The scene has repeated itself several times since. But each time officers move to disburse the crowd, protesters quickly gather again in assemblies that authorities have declared illegal.

Acting Police Chief Howard Jordan told reporters at a late night news conference that authorities had no other choice, saying the protesters were throwing rocks and bottles at officers.”We had to deploy gas to stop the crowd,” he said.

We may see something similar in Atlanta this morning, where protestors have also worn out their welcome. So far, though, there seems to be little disturbance after 53 arrests were made overnight in clearing Woodruff Park, which has been liberated:

The park remained quiet and empty the morning after Atlanta police arrested 53 Occupy Atlanta protesters after multiple warnings.

Organizers had urged protesters who were not arrested to return to the park at 6 a.m., but there were none in the park at 8:30. About two dozen Atlanta police officers remained on the perimeter of the park, which was surrounded by 4-foot metal barricades.

The protesters who were arrested have bond hearings at Atlanta Municipal Court starting at 8 a.m. Two protesters with signs arrived outside the courtroom shortly before the hearings began.

Mayor Kasim Reed told reporters more than 100 officers were involved in the operation to clear the park, adding the protests, which started more than two weeks ago, had cost the city roughly $300,000.

Officers swarmed the park around 12:45 a.m. The arrests were orderly and peaceful, though some of the protesters had to dragged out. By 1:30 a.m. the park had been cleared and by 2 a.m. onlookers and demonstrators who watched from the perimeter had largely dispersed as police maintained a significant presence downtown.

Expect more from other Occupy locations as city government loses patience with the demonstrations and the damage they do.

Update: A comment from Trafalgar deserves a highlight: “Correction needed Ed. The police did not go into full riot mode. The protestors went into full riot mode and Oakland PD responded accordingly.  Retired Oakland PD and proud of my guys!”  Yeah, that’s a fair point, and thank you for your service, Trafalgar.  Also, a couple of commenters questioned whether police actually have flash-bang grenades, and suggest that what we see may be less-powerful ordinance or maybe firecrackers that didn’t get tossed expertly by rioters.  I’ve seen plenty of firecrackers and a few cherry bombs and those look too large to be either (and seem too well placed to be accidental), but it’s a good idea to keep an open mind.

Protesters threw turquoise and red paint at the riot police officers’ faces and helmets. Some led the crowd in chanting, “This is why we call you pigs.”

The mob attacked

Ann Coulter’s book Demonic come to life. It’s like art imitating, life or life imitating art?

The democrats always deploy “”the mob” to do their dirty work. If this isn’t a good reason, to vote for any other political party, but democrat I don’t know what is. The democrats are already a coastal party after the 2010 tsunami, swept them out of office across the country, it looks like they are doubling down on political suicide.

We get that you hate police officers. But as has been pointed out already by many, flash-bangs are not anti-riot gear or effective as anti-riot gear. And why is it lie to say that loud bangs were caused by rioters using fireworks? And there are several posts at this point by people who seem to be able to recognize tear gas canisters. Are they lying?

Having worked with flashbangs extensively in the military, and trained with the police in San Diego and Virginia, they are definitely flashbangs. These are the ones that the State Department uses. We used disposable ones in the Teams so we wouldn’t have to pick up the bodies if we used them on a target. The police do not use firecrackers as far as I know.

Why the police would say they are not using flashbangs is beyond me. The only thing they would do outside like that would be loud. When I trained the State Department DS Agents, we would throw one in an enclosed room with all the students in there (with ear and eye protection) so they could feel the effects if they accidentally “chased” the bang in the room. No one was ever hurt when we used them on the students.

This is our newest generation of the entitlement minded drones. Most likely educated with taxpayer dollars, our own system is miserably flawed, teaching, no indoctrinating these lemmings into a state of mind that there is no such thing as individual responsibility. Instead, we have a President parading around the country breeding class envy and embracing this behavior as a political tool to advance his own selfish ambitions.

And if this administration does not come out immediately with a statement of condemnation of these latest outcomes, the silence alone means they are condoning this behavior that is no longer civil disobedience. Abraham Lincoln knew that national unity was crucial to an American society and hundreds of thousands perished in Lincoln’s resolve to keep this nation united. Barack Obama, and the liberal progressives are spitting in Lincoln’s face by purposely driving the wedge of class warfare and bigotry that will only further tear this nation apart. The words of sedition and treason come to mind.

No, not just anyone can go and buy these over the internet. At least for the CTS flashbangs that the State Department uses, each one has a serial number and it is a one-for-one swap at their armory. Then, the used bodies are sent back to get re-armed and used again. They are monitored by the ATF.

As for the disposable ones, they are strictly military use only.

BobMbx on October 26, 2011 at 10:16 AM

The State Department uses the disposable ones, as I stated in my initial post. I used the disposable ones in the military because that is what we used. I hadn’t encountered reusable ones until I worked for State. The reason we used one-use only in the Teams is becuase if we are on a target/ship, and need to use one, we wouldn’t have to pick it up and bring back the body. And no, they are not lethal when used properly. Just like cars are not lethal when used properly. Can they cause harm, of course that is possible, as with any explosive. But in the situation as in Atlanta and Oakland being outside, extremely low probability. Firecrackers can harm too, you know. Are you afraid of those, too?

If you’re afraid they might hurt you, don’t be at an OWS gathering.

That’s what the OWS people wanted, right?? They’ve been hyperventilating themselves into riot mode from the start — so why should anyone be surprised when they riot?? Now they all get that “1960s Street Action” after glow and self-righteous “street warrior” buzz to sustain themselves. Look! I stood up to THE MAN! I’m a real street warrior now!!

EasyEight on October 26, 2011 at 10:56 AM

The “Flash Bangs” are actually shotgun rounds that “flash and bang” in mid air, but they are not the flash bang grenades that are meant stun and disorient. They don’t have enough shock power to do that, but as you can see it sure stimulates the imagination and gets people moving. They are commonly used to disperse birds from crops and runways.

Hochmeister on October 26, 2011 at 10:58 AM

At least for the CTS flashbangs that the State Department uses, each one has a serial number and it is a one-for-one swap at their armory. Then, the used bodies are sent back to get re-armed and used again. They are monitored by the ATF.

Patriot Vet on October 26, 2011 at 10:52 AM

Hey, that makes me feel good. Let’s see. The ATF is under the DOJ and has been known to circumvent federal law.

Now you went and did it. The price for these things is going to skyrocket at the next gun show.

Kind of like the way Glazers did in the 80′s after some memorable stories.

…the man who OccupiesTheWhiteHouse…

That’s a great line.

Speaking of ol’ SCOAMF, everyone remember how Allan Lichtman said Obama was certain to be reelected, in part because there hadn’t been any major social unrest? This OWS nonsense shows why Lichtman’s model is garbage. If Obama wins, then it means the model works perfectly, because there was no major social unrest. If Obama loses, then, mirabile dictu, it means the model works perfectly, because of the major social unrest caused by OWS. It’s the global warming of political forecasting.

Fabozz on October 26, 2011 at 11:10 AM

Overhead footage at KTVU suggests otherwise, however. The video pretty clearly shows the explosions occurring in the middle of the crowd — which turned out to be an effective method of dispersing the rioters.

It looks to me like the explosions are from the tear gas canisters being tossed in by the cops. I don’t see any explosions that don’t result in at least some sort of smoke being dispensed. And I’m assuming that smoke is tear gas.

The cops may be truthful in saying they weren’t throwing flash-bangs. And they are simply misunderstanding what the appearances are. There may also have been m60s or m80s being thrown at the cops at other times, which would only heighten the confusion over who did what.

Not trying to make excuses for the cops. But I don’t see any evidence to suggest they are lying about the flash-bangs, at least.

cozmo on October 26, 2011 at 11:11 AM

Except they didn’t just say, “No.” They claimed it was fireworks thrown by the crowd at the police which is clearly BS. The bangs, whatever device they came from, were made by whatever the cops used to disperse the crowds. Again I’m forced to ask, why lie? Why is it that when a cop opens his mouth I know BS is going to spew out of it? It’s from years and years of videos showing them doing exactly that. I’m sure there are good, honest, decent cops around but the last one I met was over 20 years ago.

Benaiah on October 26, 2011 at 9:48 AM

I may be giving them too much credit, but I would chalk this up to a misunderstanding. A cop understands the difference between a Flash/Bang Grenade and a Tear Gas Canister, so they are not going to understand how anybody could confuse the two. So when somebody else asks them about the Flash/Bangs, they are going to know that they did not deploy any such thing, and assume it must be something from the other side.

Haiku Guy on October 26, 2011 at 11:12 AM

Is it any surprise that when the real violence starts, it starts in Oakland?

Of course, the real reason they are upset is the spanking my Chiefs gave them Sunday :)

Wolftech on October 26, 2011 at 11:12 AM

Watch media coverage of “Occupy” drop sharply, now that we start seeing what types make up the occupiers…

Nah, a little creative editing can make any police action look totally unprovoked. I believe in the Michael Moore school of film it’s called “a different version of the truth” (a/k/a lies)

Give me the right editor and I can make it look like Greedo shot first. Wait…what?!

RDuke on October 26, 2011 at 11:15 AM

This is what OWS wanted. Flash and bang. So they got it.

Urban Infidel on October 26, 2011 at 11:20 AM

But it’s the Tea Party that’s the danger, right? If anything EVER defined the right of peaceable assembly to redress grievances, it was those demonstrations that sprang up across this country.

Looks as though it will be a race to find a martyr for OWS before the weather mercifully ends this charade. Someone, somewhere, will inevitably become one, by accident or, more likely, by design.

Laugh at that, but it IS gonna be a reality before long.

So they assume it’s something from the other side and just claim that fireworks are being thrown by the protesters?

Don’t get me wrong, I get what you’re saying about the misunderstanding because it wasn’t actually flashbangs they were using. I just don’t understand the need to embellish the story to try and make it look like the protestors were lobbing fireworks at the cops.

You know what would really do the trick? Self immolation like the Tunisian dude that kicked off the whole Arab Spring movement. Just requires a volunteer or two and a really, really firm commitment to the cause. A drum circle playing during the festivities would add to the drama.

a capella on October 26, 2011 at 11:31 AM

These videos remind me of the end of Ann Coulter’s latest book. She tells us that the only way to deal with a mob is stand firm against it. The Oakland Police are doing the right thing. “Demonic” is an excellent read to truly understand Occupy Wall Street. And it is fun also!

Some people are best ignored. You’re one of them. Next time you’re getting beaten, raped, or robbed, or you need any kind of emergency help, try calling a hippie. See how that works for ya.

Trafalgar

Next time a cop violates your 2nd Amendment rights by claiming you don’t have the right to open carry a gun, violates your 1st Amendment rights by telling you you can’t carry a flag on a pole (as just happened in Atlanta recently). or sets you up for a drug arrest you had nothing to do with (recent story out of NYC), see how loving cops works out for ya.

If cops want me to start trusting them again then stop protecting the corrupt douche bags that abuse the power of their badges.

The War Planner on October 26, 2011 at 11:38 AM

We get that you hate police officers. But as has been pointed out already by many, flash-bangs are not anti-riot gear or effective as anti-riot gear. And why is it lie to say that loud bangs were caused by rioters using fireworks? And there are several posts at this point by people who seem to be able to recognize tear gas canisters. Are they lying?

NotCoach

Are they lying about them not being flashbangs? No, I don’t think so. Had you paid attention to my initial post I even expressed doubt that they were actual flashbangs.

Where the cops are lying is when, instead of explaining the flashes and bangs were from the tear gas canisters, they tried to blame the flashes and bangs on the crowd throwing fireworks. Clearly they were full of it and trying to make the crowd seem more hostile than they were.

I worked the Raiders riot after they lost to the Bucaneers in the Super Bowl in 2003 and there is a difference. The Raiders rioters took the butt-whuppin’ we put on them like men and went home and we never heard from them again. These entitled, elitist protestors will run whining to mummy & daddy and the ACLU and other “progressive” ambulance chasers and it’ll take the City of Oakland forever to get the petty lawsuits dismissed.

I’ll confess to being the clueless one here.

What exactly to these “protesters” want to happen?

At least in the Vietnam era, there was a goal: Stop the War.

So, what do the OWS people want (by the way, the name itself it a sham, they’ve yet to occupy anything close to Wall Street)?

Do they want to stop bank and financial firm bail-outs? Then Cain was right; they need to go march on the White House.

Do they want the vast riches they claim are inside the banks and financial firms?

Then they’re going to need to get up early, get out of the park, get a job and get to work. They’re going to need to pound the pavement rather than pound a drum. Pounding a drum just doesn’t pay all that well.
