New Herman Cain ad: The smoking man

posted at 9:22 pm on October 24, 2011 by Allahpundit

Lots of buzz about this among political junkies on Twitter tonight, mostly of the so-bad-it’s-good variety. Is the image of this guy taking a soothing drag on camera after 40 seconds of ad-tastic exertion really that strange and transgressive? Cain’s campaign is all about unapologetic populist authenticity, and there’s nothing more unapologetically, authentically populist than defiantly lighting one up when the mood strikes, politesse be damned. As the man says, “We’ve run a campaign like nobody’s ever seen.” If you’ve got a problem with casual smoking during presidential spots, well, that only proves what an uptight establishment RINO you really are.

In the next spot, Block should have a smoke in one hand and a can of Schlitz in the other. And as the camera pulls back, there’s Cain next to him, eating a slice of Godfather’s and giving a big thumbs-up.

Ok. Im sorry, but his campaign has officially turned into an SNL Sketch. The music…the Cain smile in the end. Good lord.

In yo face.

Honkie for Herman.

$10 says the smoke was put in there to get free media attention. And it worked.

amerpundit on October 24, 2011 at 9:26 PM

Cain’s next endorser: Marlboro

Good ad, imho.

Smokin’!

Rational Thought on October 24, 2011 at 9:27 PM

I smoke so I don’t have a problem with smoking. If he smoked thru the whole thing it would be less jarring. Here it looks like he’s lighting up after sex or something. The music is the worst part to me. “Our Hero” * we need to “heal”? Didn’t we do this crap with Obam already? No thanks. I may vote for Cain but not because he’s a magic negro.

Either way, NO. I have had enough of Hope and Change.

It’s a by-link only video. So someone has to send it to you to get to it. It’s not listed in his general video listings.

dforston on October 24, 2011 at 9:36 PM

There was something inspiring about that ad. And I always have to grin when I see Herman grinning at the end of his ads.

Why the fuss over the smoking? It’s not like Cain smokes. We wouldn’t want a President who smokes in the Oval Office. . . . oh, wait, never mind.

Elisa on October 24, 2011 at 9:36 PM

Block should have a smoke in one hand and a can of Schlitz in the other. And as the camera pulls back, there’s Cain next to him, eating a slice of Godfather’s and giving a big thumbs-up.

Do they still make Schlitz? It got so bad there at the end the stuff was undrinkable. How about an Abita instead, may I suggest their Turbodog.

cozmo on October 24, 2011 at 9:36 PM

Is Herman pandering to the to a certain community with this ad? The music, Mr. Block’s handle-bar mustache and come hither drag on the cigarette, and Cain’s dopey “awww yeaaah” look at the end? Hmm?

(Save us, Newt!)

Punchenko on October 24, 2011 at 9:37 PM

Cain breaking into that smile on the last couple seconds was the icing on the cake.

Kataklysmic on October 24, 2011 at 9:40 PM

Only thing that would have made it better would be for him to take a big bite out of a greasy pork rib, smothered in barbecue sauce, and wash it down with a Red Bull.

carbon_footprint on October 24, 2011 at 9:40 PM

Shades of the Marlboro Man.

BobMbx on October 24, 2011 at 9:40 PM

Actually…

If the plan is to have Block do a series of these videos, giving campaign updates David Plouffe-style, to the public, the smoking works great as a visual signature and mark-of-authenticity. Sort of like Columbo fumbling with his pockets.

If they drop it, then it was just dumb.

The real problematic part of the video is Cain’s creepster smile at the end. I seriously doubt that tested well with women voters.

Robert_Paulson on October 24, 2011 at 9:40 PM

1. “Herman Cain: Not a politician”

I think that message can win. Everybody, every freakin body is sick of politicians. The beltway has underestimated how powerful the TEA Party is and they cannot understand that we are ready to do the unthinkable to let them know we mean business.

(Karl Rove still thinks we have use for him AND he thinks he is smart enough to coopt/use us for his own ends. How I long to stick a TEA Party finger in his eye.)

2. My friends mom never voted for a, not Democrat in her life and is now going off about voting independent, voting independent! (unprompted mind you, she gets her information from TV, no blogs) She is part of the 90 of the 90/10 black voting split and she does not want to vote for Obama…

Yeah, I know. I cannot believe they put out a product worse than Budweiser and expected to stay in business. It took me quite a while to find a replacement. My uncles and I are still kinda’ PO’ed about that. And the company that finally bought them out (Stroh’s) wasn’t it. When Sears got so bad that K-mart bought them, it reminded me of the whole sordid tale.

I don’t think Mr. Block is working for $10 bucks. I don’t think Mr. Cain’s staff who is advising him to put this out is working for $10 bucks, either. You would think with the money he is raising he would hire folks to make an ad that talks about his record, his story, etc. etc. This ad just makes Cain look… bizarre.

Not that I’m complaining, mind you. I don’t want Cain to get the nomination, lose, and have us all endure another four years of Obama. More creepy low-production ads that make Cain look bad (while giving me a laugh) is a win-win for Team Gingrich/Perry.
