CNN poll: 59% believe Obama’s policies will fail

posted at 10:05 am on October 18, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

It’s hard to know what to make of this release from the latest CNN poll.  Barack Obama continues to run underwater on overall job approval in the CNN poll, improving slightly since early September’s 43/55 to 46/50 today.  However, American confidence in his policies hit a new low — well below his approval rating:

CNN/ORC International Poll released Monday indicates that 46% of the public approves of the job the president is doing in the White House, basically unchanged from September, with 50% saying they disapprove of how he is handling his duties. …

According to the survey, 36% say they think the president’s policies will succeed, with 59% saying Obama’s policies will fail, up 12 points from last year and nearly double the 32% who said in 2009 that the president’s policies will fail. Most Democrats and independent voters say they hope Obama’s policies will succeed. But a majority of Republicans say they hope Obama’s policies will fail.

“A record high level of pessimism that may not be surprising when six in ten predict the economy will be bad shape a year from now,” says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. “Only 13% say the economy is in good shape now; only 39% believe it will be in good shape next October.”

The report mixes hope and believe in such a way as to confuse readers about which way the question was asked.  It was actually asked both ways.  Only 25% of voters “hope” Obama’s policies will fail, but 59% think they will fail.  That’s the first time in the series that this gets a majority response.

Regardless of what people “hope,” they react to what they believe, and majorities in nearly all demographics believe Obama’s policies are losers.  That includes almost 2-1 among independents at 34/61 and 35/57 among self-professed moderates.  Majorities in every regional demographic believe Obama’s policies will fail, including a shocking 43/52 among urban voters.  Likewise, majorities in every age demographic believe that Obama’s policies will fail, starting with a 43/53 among the youngest voters and peaking at 30/64 among 50-64YOs.  Those earning under or over $50K reject Obama’s policies (42/53 and 29/66, respectively).

So who believes Obama’s policies will succeed?  Only Democrats (60/34), self-professed liberals (55/39), and non-white voters (54/42).  Not only are those support numbers in demos that traditionally go all-in for Obama looking pretty weak, it’s a demonstration of just how little these demos impact the general electoral opinion any longer.

If that’s the case, then why do 46% still approve of Obama’s job performance if 59% think his policies will fail?  That’s probably due to Obama’s personal likeability, but that’s not going to win him a second term.  This poll took place five weeks after Obama’s jobs and deficit-reduction plans got rolled out, and it’s clear that they haven’t impressed anyone except Obama’s core voters — and not enough of them to provide a game-changer.

Its the OWS mentality. They dont think Obama will succeed but they are going to grab all the freebies they can as long as Obama offers them.

Its not about Obama its about looting the treasury.

Ed, Kool Aid drinkers convince themselves that ebil Rethuglicans are out to sabotage the president. Thus they apporve while believing at the same time his policies will fail, but not by his own hand.

That’s probably due to Obama’s personal likeability, but that’s not going to win him a second term

IlikedAUH2O on October 18, 2011 at 10:17 AM

Personal approval? Personal appeal? High numbers?

It is racism that drives these personal approval numbers, nothing less.

Racist that one must vote and approve of the Black candidate/President if one is Black.

Racist that one must approve of the Black candidate/President if one is White and does not want to be seen as being a racist.

If Obama were non-Black he would have never been elected; and if he had been elected, and was doing this much damage, he’d have been pilloried well over a year ago by the MSM and the public at large, and his numbers would be in the teens.

Racism.

coldwarrior on October 18, 2011 at 10:18 AM

From a pure research standpoint, what the surveys are saying — scientifically speaking — is:

1) “Nice guy.”

2) “But I woudn’t trust him to walk my dog.”

VastRightWingConspirator on October 18, 2011 at 10:18 AM

I hope Obama loses. I know his policies will fail. We’ve seen this policy before and it failed and so will junior. That’s his problem, Stimulus Sr. wasn’t even popular why would he think he’d get traction from Stimulus jr.?
When Rush Limbaugh famously said he hoped Obama would fail, he was talking about hoping Obama would fail to get his socialist policies enacted, not that he wanted America to fail under Obama.

it’s also llikely due to the dislike of Bush. Afterall they are comparing him to the last President.

The more likely reason is that many people are reluctant to tell a pollster that they disapprove of a black president, not because they actually find him personally likeable. I’d wager that his real approval numbers are half of what any of these polls are saying.

I do believe Republicans will win the next election cycle by large margins, as people put their hope and faith in the only other choice available. The bad news is that the GOP still has several progressive Liberals within their ranks and are still to this day influenced by the old media in ways that take them away from the will of the vast majority of citizens. We have much work to do and few options left; we will have to work overtime to get Republicans elected and overtime to get them to listen to us rather than the old media.

..no, Ed, it’s probably due to the questions asked:

(1) “Will the economic policies of President Obama — The Light-Bringer from Shoulder Town — be successful or will the racist, bigoted, reactionary Republicans in Congress remain intractable and sit on the sidelines with their arms crossed?”

(2) “Do you believe President Obama still beats his wife and keeps the dog locked in the basement of the White House?”

I’m still waiting for someone to tell me what’s truly “personally likable” about Obama. He is a cold, spoiled, petulant narcissist who sees only his own reflection and is in love with it. Everything else is a media creation being swallowed by people who still, to this day, refuse to recognize the gruesome visage beneath the mask. In short, they like something that doesn’t exist.

No, it’s not just racial guilt. If racial guilt were so powerful, Obama would have swept and still enamored the South – the one part of the country where nobody seems to like him. (Is Cain’s popularity there guilt motivated?) Plenty of people simply despise Republicans. Even some people on this site despise Republicans. Would you believe it?

So your response to a poll is to make up numbers and call them real?

I guess when reality doesn’t give you the results you want, you just fabricate new facts and pretend they’re reality… good enough. Working with reality is hard, simply imagining things you’d prefer them to be is easier.

I can understand you wanting easier answers. Real work is hard.

gekkobear on October 19, 2011 at 12:22 AM

Please list the successes that Obama can verify. Show me some proof verses here say. His record is a pitiful mess yet the polls say 40% favor his agenda? Where are these polls taken? Maybe in the White House. The MSM lies so much that they cannot be trusted and rooting through the internet turns up stories that are buried with the trash of the MSM. The cameras at these protests show the intelligence of toads with degrees, no less, that confirm my suspicions of the public wisdom.
