Video: Borderline insane — or totally facetious — meltdown from OWS protester

posted at 5:33 pm on October 14, 2011 by Tina Korbe

Really not sure what to make of this. I have a hard time believing this kid is serious — and his periodic smirk makes me wonder if his rant might not be a — to borrow a word from Rachel Maddow — “genius,” ironic, satiric, mocking, obnoxious, somewhat schizophrenic and absolutely over-the-top parody of the real protesters. Right? Surely?

At the same time that I’m posting this, I’m thinking this is why the Flea Party (h/t Ann Coulter) is still out there protesting. The rest of us can’t tear our eyes away from the wreck, and all the coverage makes them feel important. Maybe it’s time to quit rubbernecking …

He looks exhausted. They all do – which is about what you’d expect from people sleeping outdoors and rampaging around with other nitwits and experiencing an emotional high. They’re on the, er, cutting edge of a revolution, after all. So bottom line, I wonder how much of this hysteria (from him and others) is just a sleep deprived meltdown.

dilettante; a person who takes up an art, activity, or subject merely for amusement, especially in a desultory or superficial way; dabbler.

We live in a culture that takes little, or nothing seriously and everything is approached with the Jon Stewart style of cynicism.

Yup, same guy…

From the NYTimes:

Mr. Hall said that he grew up in New Mexico and that both his parents were politically active lawyers who were thrilled that he was pursuing a socially conscious life and was involved in the Occupy Wall Street protest. Mr. Hall said he attended Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and then transferred to Bard College in upstate New York because of its reputation as a socially conscious school.

He had been renting in Washington Heights for the past two years while attending doctoral classes at Columbia University as a nonmatriculated student. He said that he supported his modest lifestyle on savings he earned working as a teenager and that he also had “a small trust fund” from his grandfather that he had not drawn from yet. For the past four weeks, he has eaten free meals and has slept in the park.

More from the NYTimes article:

One, Edward T. Hall III, 25, was barefoot and dressed in loud, multicolored tights. He wore Native American clothes and New Age jewelry, with a baseball cap pulled sideways over his long hair…

Mr. Hall is a well-educated young man with a privileged upbringing who says he is following a greater calling than getting a job and making money. He sees the current protest as a global movement to help fight poverty and economic inequality. He has spent the past month sleeping in the park and is one of the organizers of the protest.

Isn’t he just doing what Barack Obama encouraged him to do?

Mr. Hall is a well-educated young man with a privileged upbringing who says he is following a greater calling than getting a job and making money. Right? Surely?

You kidding me? He’s absolutely serious! He’s really into it! He feels it! So it’s got to be real! It’s the most emotion he has felt in his life in a long long time! So it’s got to be the most real thing he has ever been apart of… because it feels so right! This is probably the most thrilling thing he has ever been a part of.. he’s making history!

Plus.. you throw in the fact… he’s in a mob! There’s free food! Free place to stay! Free girls! Free or cheap drugs! Media attention! Power! Free girls! Emotion! Fame! Free girls!

There is no place better… no event more important to be a part of today in America if you are a lazy, ignorant, self centered, uneducated college kid with 3 degrees and $50,000. in debt and no job than in that park! You become somebody really important… a part of history that could change the world and all you got to do is show up, lay down and take it off and you become somebody! You are a part of something bigger than your worthless unambitious self and you don’t have to do a blasted thing!
