Messiah College crowd pushes back on Frances Fox Piven’s accusations of Tea Party racism

posted at 5:57 pm on October 13, 2011 by Tina Korbe

Kudos to the crowd on this one. No surprise that Frances Fox Piven would repeat the typical, brain-dead, rooted-in-unreality accusation that the Tea Party is racist — but rather a surprise that a little push-back inspired her to stop clutching her talking points quite so tightly.

Early in her lecture on American democracy at the private Christian college in Pennsylvania earlier this week, Piven spouts the usual drivel, suggesting Tea Partiers aren’t comfortable with Barack Obama as president because he’s black. The comment drew displeased expressions and a few boos. Piven looks at the audience with an intrigued expression and asks, “Are you all Tea Partiers?” Undeterred, she continues. One Tea Partier in the crowd spoke up further. “As long as he follows the Constitution, we don’t care what color he is,” the protester says audibly. His rebuttal draws cheers from the crowd.

But later, she tries again: The Tea Party, she says, convinces itself it’s less racist than it is by propping up a candidate like Herman Cain. The students aren’t convinced. Eventually, it’s Piven who’s forced to concede: She clarifies that she doesn’t think the entire Tea Party is motivated by racism or that racism is the only motivation. The Tea Party, she says, is an “authentic” movement. My, how gracious!

Seriously, how did we arrive at this point? Piven’s backtracking wasn’t particularly open-minded, her amended quotes not particularly accurate. Whatever she said appears to have come as much from genuine surprise at encountering any kind of an opposing view as from a true reconsideration of her assumptions. Yet, this has to be considered some kind of crowd victory because the unfounded insults levied at a group of ordinary men and women concerned about the growth of government have only escalated since the first cries of racism surfaced. What will it take to reclaim the image of the Tea Party from the mischaracterizations of the left? Simple statements like that made by the man in this crowd are a start, but Tea Partiers will have to be as relentless in the rebuttals as opponents are in their attacks.

Below, the relevant portions of Piven’s speech (h/t Media Research Center):

We all need to follow the lead of these students and push back on every false accusation of Tea Party people being racist.

Liberals need to be taught that being prejudiced against Tea Party people is not acceptable.

The hag should be sent free of charge to a hike along the Iraq / Iran border.

We should be so lucky they tag and bag her for a few years.

Iran and Iraq would both move their borders to avoid getting that close to her.

I’m shocked that Messiah College would even have this Marxist witch on their campus. I know a couple of kids who go there and I’ll bet they were in that crowd booing, and I’ll bet their parents are none too happy to have their tuition dollars paying this hag.

*chuckle* First part of clip 1, she talks about propoganda and how we get bombarded by it. Later, others take issue to her comment and fight back against her propoganda. Her response? Shadddap.

You see, propogandists don’t like being challanged.

You understand, of course, that you’re a racist for objecting to the charge of racism. What could be more obvious proof?

These are the same people that coined the term McCarthyism and built a cottage industry of grievance based on dozens of accusations of communism against… dozens of communists.

This is an audacity of moral distortion and hypocrisy on a scale not seen in human history. They are presumptively and capriciously slandering millions of Americans with the worst charge you can make in our culture with absolutely zero evidence — and sometimes with falsified evidence. This is McCarthyism on criminal steroids, aided and abetted by society’s supposed protectors of individual rights, the media.

Why was she even invited to speak there? Hopefully, it wasn’t due to a sympathizer booking her, rather as an object lesson in critical thinking for students to hear moonbat marxists speak.

LASue on October 13, 2011 at 8:28 PM

Here’s what NOT to do: provide contrary evidence (it can be very hard to prove a negative) or answer the accuser’s further questions.

THERE IS ONLY ONE THING that should be done about these accusations:

Tell the accuser to PROVE IT!

Tell the accuser to PROVIDE HARD EVIDENCE!

It’s the accuser’s statement. THE BURDEN OF PROOF IS ON THE ACCUSER. THE ACCUSER MUST PROVE IT. TELL THAT TO THE ACCUSER.

Any other response is defensiveness and takes the burden on the responder. The accuser can then poke holes in the response.

This is like judo, karate, or other martial arts. The accuser is trying to provoke a response that can be used against the responder. Don’t respond. STATE THAT THE ACCUSER MUST PROVIDE THE PROOF OF THEIR STATEMENT.

Exactly right. I wonder if this came up in the Q&A. I’d like to think a student had the presence of mind to ask her for proof. Has she been to a tea party rally? Does she have transcripts of interviews, photographic evidence? Proof?! A quaint concept. It’s so much easier to smear millions of Americans through the prerogatives of superior and enlightened intellect!

rrpjr on October 13, 2011 at 8:45 PM

It is inappropriate and ungentlemanly to attack or mock a woman for her appearance. Be bigger than that. Mock her all you want for her inane ideas.

(The same goes for comments sometimes made here about Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama, Rachel Maddow, etc.)

acasilaco on October 13, 2011 at 7:25 PM

But these people are physically ugly. Their appearances are unusually ugly. So others comment about that, being somewhat jolted by an unusually unattractive person who has captured national media attention with unusually unattractive ideas.

Criticizing their ideas comes first. Then you view a picture of the source and go, “eegads, ugly”. People comment when they’re shocked as to physical attributes, not out of boredom or for lack of criticism for policies or ideas authored by who they later discover to be really ugly.

Nancy Pelosi is STILL trying to keep her pathetic lie alive, that “the Tea Party spit on Representative…[a black guy, the same one the DirtBaggers in Atlanta chanted-down recently].”

Media on the Right spent a lot of time and resources trying to locate ANY evidence of ANYone “spitting” on ANY Congressperson (of any color, size or shape) and no evidence of such could ever be located. But still Pelosi has maintained this lie.

Even first-hand witnesses were asked, people in and not in the Tea Party protests, if they’d EVER seen such an act (spitting on a Congressperson), and NO ONE ever saw any such thing. No tape of such an act has ever surfaced, although a tape of that particular Congressguy was shown as he pushed through the Tea Partiers and no “spitting” by any of them (or anyone else) was to be seen. Yet Pelosi maintains her lie.

Pelosi was just on national news a few days ago repeating that lie. Along with in earlier weeks building up to the Occupy thing, the Congressional Black Caucus members claiming such indignities that never occurred (mainly, that the Tea Party was “racist”, despite NO evidence of such nationwide).

It’s these announcements by the crazed, lying Left that impacts just enough among the Left that gets them agitated (think, the Van Jones and Valerie Jarrett method) and they start repeating this deceit even when there is nothing in reality to support what they allege.

Think about the severity of this: those responsible for repeating these wretched lies are in our government (Pelosi, Jarrett, Congressional Black Caucus, etc.). And, equally impactful, these lies are intentionally unfurled and repeated for…what appears to be very bleak, very, very corrupt purposes.

Lourdes on October 13, 2011 at 8:56 PM

It would have been nice if she’d have worn a bra. Gross.

sheesh on October 13, 2011 at 9:13 PM

Think about the severity of this..
Lourdes on October 13, 2011 at 8:56 PM

I do. One has to grapple with the idea of society run behind a complete and impermeable edifice of lies — or of people without even a trace of moral compunction not to lie. Have we reached that point? The question is, how effective is the growing conservative and alternative media, how aware are people of the lies, and what are the consequences of the lies?

That Pelosi is blithely repeating a lie which Andrew Breitbart demolished about as rigorously and broadly as possible for conservative media is beyond disturbing, and suggests the elite within their edifice have no fear or concern for the conservative media. They are completely confident that the MSM is an overpowering Pravda. They have good reason: the media will not or cannot even ask Pelosi about the failure of proof in her lies, and moreover of Breitbart’s comprehensive disproof? And think about a roster of presidential candidates seeimingly uninterested in this machinery of lies, and who submit themselves to this same media in a way that concedes to it an authority and respect it shouldn’t have and does not deserve.

In politics, white people often prefer the politics of one white person over another’s. But they’re racist when they prefer the politics of one black man over another’s.

Conservatives rejecting the politics of the once-named “most liberal Senator” is racist , for which we only make up for it by promoting the politics of a conservative black man.

Any country that buys that narrative is just screaming uncle in the face of a deluge from the liberal narrative factory.

Axeman on October 14, 2011 at 8:04 AM

MYounger on October 13, 2011 at 6:37 PM

I think you’re both wrong. The mealy-mouthers that tend to rise to the top of the Republican party seem unable to attack any spin of the press. Birtherism isn’t what made Trump appear attractive to conservatives at first blush–he knew how to fight back. The GOP just gives us media punching bags. Reagan didn’t bubble up through the ranks of the GOP, he overtook them. Bush Sr. was their guy and will forever be remembered as the lesser president.

Axeman on October 14, 2011 at 8:18 AM

Tea Partiers will have to be as relentless in the rebuttals as opponents are in their attacks.

Nope. They should never address it ever.

Once Lyndon Johnson told an aid to start a rumor that a rival candidate was caught having, um, relations with a horse. The aid protested, “No one’s gonna believe that!” Johnson said, “I don’t care, I just want him to have to deny it on TV.”

If you don’t get it, there’s no point in explaining it.
